- 1. INTRODUCTION                                                             -
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is my first FAQ so please be gentle with me. I decided to write it when I
was trying to complete the Custom Series Championship and was unable to find a
definitive list of what remained to be unlocked. Since then I've beaten Burnout
2 into submission and won all the Gold medals, so thought I'd document my
findings; it may not be the most detailed of FAQs but I do believe it to be
both accurate and complete.

Taking up the mantle of Namco's Ridge Racer series, the Burnout games have (for
me at least) redefined the arcade racer. The first, released towards the end of
2001, was highly enjoyable but flawed in places; when constructing its sequel
Criterion have listened to the critics and produced a truly remarkable game.
Nothing else quite manages to convey such a sense of speed, as you Boost down
the wrong side of the road, squinting at a few horizontal scanlines trying to
make out the oncoming traffic. It's easier than the original, of that I have no
doubt, but the improved graphics and slightly more forgiving collision
detection have created the best arcade racing experience available on any
console. IMHO of course... ;)

- Basic Gameplay --------------------------------------------------------------

Burnout 2 is a racing game. You hit the accelerator - you leave the brake
well alone - you win the race! What more do you want to know?

Central to the Burnout concept is the Boost meter. When full this can unleash
a nitrous-fuelled burst of speed that will leave your opponents choking on
dust. You fill the meter by driving offensively and if you can continue to do
so while Boosting, you'll chain another Boost, and another, and another...

The main section of the game comprises two championships; win Grand Prix
composed of between three and seven races to progress through the game,
collecting bonus cars along the way. There's also the usual Single Race and
Time Trial modes plus an NFS-style Pursuit mode, but the unique selling point
of this game has always been its crashes and Burnout 2 introduces a dedicated
Crash mode that promises carnage a-plenty.

- Hints and Tips --------------------------------------------------------------

+ Master the Boost Start; you'll be at a disadvantage from the off if you
can't get away from the line quickly. Hold the accelerator button then tap
the brake to get your tyres smoking. Keep on the accelerator and then
release it midway between the counts of '1' and 'GO'. Whoosh...

+ You should be aiming to get Gold medals in all the individual Grand Prix
races if you're trying to beat Burnout 2 and unlock evrything that's
available. If you fail to win a race you can reset the console before it
AutoSaves and then select 'Continue' from the championship menu to try
   again.

+ The best way to secure a win is to get ahead and stay ahead. While this may
seem pretty obvious, on the later races if you let a car get past you it
will pull away and catching it will be nigh on impossible. It seems that
the CPU cars can race almost perfectly if they're in the lead whereas if
they're behind you, the disturbances you leave in the traffic pattern can
   catch them out.

+ The Supercar (unlocked by beating Face Off 4) is probably the best car to
use in the later Grand Prix as it has maximum statistics in both handling
and top speed. Many people enthuse about the Custom Roadster which has
better acceleration (and a similar top speed despite the stats), but it's
handling is much more ferocious and can easily catch you out.

+ Avoid using Boost on the Pursuit challenges; your opponent seems to be able
to match your speed and you'll just end up reaching the 'getaway' distance
quicker. (It has been suggested that avoiding Boosting during the
Championship races also makes winning easier but hey, where's the fun in
   that?)

+ On 'Pursuit 6' you can ram your opponent into the bus that appears on the
first right hand bend, instantly winning the challenge. I'm not sure
whether this should be considered a bug or a feature but it certainly
makes beating this difficult Pursuit race a whole lot simpler.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 2. BURNOUT 2 - POINT OF IMPACT                                              -
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Burnout 2 offers several different game modes as detailed below.

- Offensive Driving 101 -------------------------------------------------------

When you load up Burnout 2 for the first time, your only option is to sign up
for lessons in Offensive Driving. The course consists of six simple lessons
which teach you how to earn Boost; completing them all with any degree of
success will open up the main game modes, including the first Championship.

If you manage to win a Gold medal on each of the tests, you'll unlock your
first bonus car - the Driver's Ed.

   1. Oncoming Traffic:

The first and most useful method for earning Boost involves simply driving
your car on the wrong side of the road, avoiding the oncoming traffic. If
you head immediately over onto the other carriageway and sit on either of
the dotted white lines, you should have no problem getting a Gold on this
   test.

   - Gold:    1900'
   - Silver:  1500'
   - Bronze:  800'

   2. Near Misses:

When you pass close to another car at speed you gain a little Boost; pass
close to more than one and a multiplier increases the amount you earn. To
get the Gold on this test, Boost Start from the line and immediately head
towards the opposite carriageway. You should be able to get Near Misses off
each of the four pairs of taxis, leaving you to swerve close to a couple of
the remaining cars for the Gold.

   - Gold:    10
   - Silver:  5
   - Bronze:  3

   3. Drifting:

Drifting not only earns you Boost but will help you take tight corners with
greater speed - it is essential that you master this skill if you want to
do well in Burnout 2. As you turn into a bend, tap the brake button and
immediately get back on the accelerator to force the back end to drift
wide. Getting a Gold can be a little tricky on this lesson; you'll need to
force the car into a Drift on even the slightest bend.

   - Gold:    1980'
   - Silver:  510'
   - Bronze:  200'

   4. Getting Air:

The final method for gaining Boost involves getting all four wheels off the
ground. This is a very straightforward test (although getting the Gold can
be tricky) so just drive over the humps as fast as possible; try to keep
the car straight when you land.

   - Gold:    300'
   - Silver:  260'
   - Bronze:  230'

   5. Boost Meter:

The Boost meter starts off about a third full and your task is to fill it
in the shortest possible time using the four methods described in the
previous lessons. You should have no problems getting Gold on this very
simple test; the first part of the track will allow you to grab a few near
misses and then it's over to the other carriageway for some Oncoming
   Traffic!

   - Gold:    20s
   - Silver:  30s
   - Bronze:  50s

   6. Use the Boost:

This final test is essentially a short time trial, but you'll need to make
good use of the Boost to get the Gold. Boost Start off the line, and then
hit the Boost once you're up to speed; you can chain three Boosts together
if you use everything you've learnt in the previous lessons and get a time
somewhere close to thirty two seconds.

   - Gold:    36s
   - Silver:  45s
   - Bronze:  59s

- Championship ----------------------------------------------------------------

The Championship is the main game mode and consists of four Grand Prix, each
containing a number of races. To begin with, only the Pacific Gate GP is
available but winning races will allow progress through to the rest of the
 Championship.

Points are awarded for your position at the end of each race and the car with
the most points wins the Grand Prix. Winning a Grand Prix allows progress to
the next Point-To-Point (P2P) race, which in turn opens up the next Grand
 Prix.

A Gold medal is awarded for each race you win and if you manage to complete a
Grand Prix with all Golds (ie. win every race), a Face Off challenge is
 unlocked. Face Off pits you against a single opponent in a head-to-head race;
be the first over the finish line to unlock a bonus vehicle.

When you win a Point-To-Point race, a Pursuit challenge is unlocked. This
puts you in the role of a Traffic Cop; crash into your opponent's car ten
times before the end of the race to stop him getting away and unlock another
bonus vehicle. If you manage to beat all three Pursuit challenges in this
championship, the bonus Pursuit mode appears in the main game menu.

As you progress through the Championship, additional tracks will be made
available in the Single Race and Time Trial modes. You'll be able to race on
any tracks upto and including those in your current Grand Prix. This allows
you to get some practice if you're finding a particular race difficult.

The final race of the Championship (marked as Special) is the Custom Series
Qualifier and is basically just another Face Off challenge. Win the race and
you'll unlock both the Custom Series Championship and your first Custom Class
 car; the Custom Compact.

Progression through the Championship is listed below; bonus cars that can be
unlocked are listed in curly braces:

   1. Pacific Gate Grand Prix
      - Airport Terminal 3
      - 88 Interchange

once the standard Championship has been completed. These races are much
harder and typically run on reversed tracks against tough opposition.

There are no Face Off or Point-To-Point races to be completed, but the
progression pattern is similar to before; win each Grand Prix to progress to
the next and obtain all the Gold medals to unlock the Pursuit challenges and
 bonus vehicles.

Progression through the Custom Series Championship is listed below; bonus
cars that can be unlocked are again listed in curly braces:

   1. Speed Streak Grand Prix {Custom Sport}

- Single Race -----------------------------------------------------------------

The Single Race mode is available in Single or Multiplayer and allows you to
race any of the currently available vehicles on any of the courses that have
been unlocked via the Championship modes.

If you want to race head-to-head with another player without any CPU
controlled cars, you'll need to unlock the Face Off cheat by winning all
three Face Off challenges in the standard Championship.

- Time Attack -----------------------------------------------------------------

Like most other racing games Burnout 2 has a Time Attack mode, which allows
you to race against the clock to improve your lap times and master your
racing lines. Any courses that have been unlocked via the Championship modes
will be available to practice on and although there are no opponents to race
against, civillian traffic is still present. Boost can be earned and used
just like in the regular game and is essential for getting those fast lap
 time.

The Time Attack lap records for all the courses are listed below with those
for the [R]eversed tracks in square brackets:

   + Airport Terminal 3             0:39  [0:35]
   + Airport Terminal 1 & 2         1:35  [1:30]
   + Interstate Loop                1:10  [1:14]
   + 88 Interchange                 2:50  [2:30]
   + Palm Bay Heights               1:25  [1:20]
   + Palm Bay Marina                1:45  [1:38]
   + Sunrise Valley Downtown        0:52  [0:50]
   + Sunrise Valley Springs         1:15  [1:15]
   + Big Surf Grove                 1:20  [1:16]
   + Big Surf Shores                1:54  [1:50]
   + Crystal Summit Peak            0:52  [0:46]
   + Crystal Summit Lake            2:15  [2:05]
   + Ocean Sprint                   2:20  [2:10]
   + Heartbreak Hills               2:15  [2:15]
   + Freeway Dash                   2:45  [2:25]

- Crash -----------------------------------------------------------------------

Crash mode takes short sections of the courses and encourages the player to
cause the biggest, most expensive pile-ups possible. Initially only three
Crash Zones are available, but getting a medal in each unlocks the next three
 zones, and so on...

Much has been made of this game mode, but I personally don't like it very
much. Getting a high enough score to warrant a medal seems more about luck
than skill and the only reward for obtaining all Golds is the less than
 impressive Runaway cheat.

That said, the medal requirements for each of the Crash Zones are listed
below. If you want detailed tactics on how to get great scores I suggest you
take a look at the FAQs by Wolf Feather and dolt, both of which are available
 at GameFAQs.com.

      - Silver:  $14,000,000
      - Bronze:   $8,000,000

- Pursuit ---------------------------------------------------------------------

Pursuit mode is unlocked in the main menu once the three Pursuit challenges
in the standard Championship have been completed. It is available as both a
single player and two player game; Player One always takes the role of the
Traffic Cop (although he/she doesn't have to use the Cop Car) while Player
Two (if applicable) must try to escape.

The rules are similar to the challenges in the championship modes; the
Traffic Cop must hit the escapee's car ten times before the end of the race,
but in Multiplayer any crashes made by the escapee also count as damage.

Pursuit can be played on any of the courses that have been unlocked via the
 Championship modes.

- Cheats ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Not really Cheats, more like bonus modes really. The Cheat entry will appear
in the Options menu once the first has been earned; only one can be activated
at a time and when selected, your newly improved winning times aren't saved.

+ Face Off; available once all the Face Off challenges in the standard
Championship have been completed. When activated it replaces the Single
Race option in both the Single- and Multiplayer menus and limits the
number of cars racing to two (single player Face Off or a proper head-to-
     head two player race).

+ Invulnerable; getting all the Gold medals in the standard Championship
gives the option to make yourself invunerable. When selected, collisions
no longer end in crashes but rather just slow you to a standstill.

+ Infinite Boost; I can't recall how I unlocked this Cheat - any
suggestions would be appreciated. Does exactly what it says on the tin...

+ Free Run; complete the Custom Series Championship to unlock this Cheat
which removes all the civilian traffic. It is especially fun on Airport
Terminal 3 [R] because you still earn Boost for driving on the wrong
carriageway, allowing multiple Boosts to be chained together with ease.

+ Runaway; the only reward for getting all the Gold medals in Crash mode.
When activated, Runaway replaces Crash in the main menu, and your vehicle
will just get faster and faster until the inevitable happens!

This FAQ started off as two lists; created to satisfy some strange primeval
urge to document how far I'd got in Burnout 2. They're presented here for
reference - feel free to tick the vehicles and courses off as you make
progress. ;)

- Cars ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Burnout 2 presents a rather limited garage of seven vehicles to choose from
at the beginning of the game, but there are fifteen others to be unlocked.
