I. QUICK FAQ
------------

Frequently asked questions (both gameplay and character related) on the
Gamefaqs forums and Usenet:

1. Why is my partner so stupid?

You MUST level your character up. Really, this is the whole point of world
tour. At level 100, my partner consistently scores more points than I do.

2. Can I use my team in other modes?

Yes, I often use the team I created in arcade mode. Note that your partner's
level does carry over, so if she's still at a low level in World Tour, she
won't play very well in Arcade Mode.

3. I want to control both characters, is there a way to do this?

Yes, place first overall in World Tour, and you are given the option to
 control your "partner".

4. When you reach 100% teamwork, do you choose "Do nothing"?

Yes, that's probably the safest thing to do. But if you are winning by a wide
margin, you may want to praise your partner, else you may lose a few points.

5. Arrgghh!!! Why did this game get so hard all of the sudden?

Because some teams are better than others, and a few teams (such as Brazil
and Cuba) are really hard to beat, even at the beginning of the game.

6. Are there different camera angles?

Not that you can change manually. The computer normally selects the correct
camera angle, but you may occasionally find yourself lost off-screen.

7. Why can't I pull off a block?

I had problems with this too. Basically, you need to get in position long
before the spike occurs and remember that you can still control your
character once in the air... if the spike is coming from the right, you may
want to jump to the left. If you're missing the ball entirely, you're
probably jumping too late. If you hit the ball enough to deflect it (but not
enough to stop it), then you probably had poor positioning.

8. Sometimes my Partner (who is at a high level) won't receive the ball, even
though the marker indicates it's her ball. What gives?

If your partner is doing this even though she's leveled up, you are probably
moving toward the ball before she receives it. If you run towards the ball,
she may assume that YOU want to receive it... this generally happens when the
ball lands halfway between the two of you. My best advice would be to learn
to trust your partner. If she's fully leveled up, she will most likely
receive any ball that comes her way.

9. How do I beat Tutorial mode?

With practice, and a little luck. Most of the challenges are pretty easy, but
a few (such as blocking or attacking 5 times in a row) can be rather
difficult to pull off. If all else fails, memorize your opponents actions...
since they always seem to do the exact same thing.

10. How do I unlock items?

By beating the various game modes and by entering various "passwords" as the
character name under World Tour Mode. See LIST OF UNLOCKABLES for more
 details.

11. I want to create brightly colored anime styled hair... how do I do this?

You must start with blonde hair and change the hue. You will NOT be able to
lighten the hair if you start with brown or black hairstyles.

12. Can I change the body sizes/styles?

No, all the women have the same body style... tall, thin, and athletic.

13. I just won some new uniforms, how do I put these on characters I've already
created?

Unfortunately, you can't edit existing characters... you must create new
 ones.

II. WORLD TOUR - OVERVIEW
-------------------------

In World Tour Mode, you create your own team and play through 8 Volleyball
tournaments, each consisting of 4 games each. To win World Tour, you only
need to be the overall points leader, it is not neccesary to win each game,
or even each tournament. But you will need to level up your partner, who is
controlled by the CPU and is quite inept at first. With your guidance, she
will slowly improve, eventually becoming a great volleyball player... in
fact, you may find your student surpassing her teacher!

-----------------------
III. CHARACTER CREATION
-----------------------

A. General Info

Characters can only be created in World Tour Mode, when you start a new game.
You can store three sets of characters per memory card. Once created, you can
NOT edit characters (you can always delete them, of course). If you want to
make a change to your characters, even if it's just changing their uniform,
you'll have to create a new set.

You'll design two characters, both the "Player" and "Partner". The Player is
controlled by you, the player, while the partner is controlled by the CPU.

NOTE: On any character creation screen, you can use the left and right shoulder
buttons to zoom in and out, and use the yellow c-stick to rotate and scroll
across the character. This is most useful when choosing a hairstyle and
uniform.

B. Menu Screens

 1. NAME: Choose the Player name, maximum of 7 characters.

 2. COUNTRY: Choose the team country; there are 30 to choose from.

 3. HAIR

    a) Hair Style: Choose your character hair style, at least 77 styles to
    choose from.

    b) Hue: Change color of hair.

On certain hairstyles (such as 24 & 44), hue changes the color
of the hat, not the color of the hair. This only happens on a few styles.

    c) Brightness: changes the brightness of the hair.

Note that you can't make the chosen hairstyle brighter, only darker - so
if you are trying to create bright green hair you will need to begin with
    a blonde hairstyle.

 4. FACE

    a) Face Type: Choose a face for your character, from at least 56 different
    face types.

My favorites include 10, 31-33, 44, 45, 50-53, but your mileage may vary.
Since you can't choose body types, all characters have the same body style
    (athletic).

    b) Hue: changes the tint of the skin

Note that you are only changing the tint of the skin, you can't create
characters with bright blue skin! Also, if the default skin tone is a bit
too orange/red, you can create a more neutral tone by adding a bit of
    green or blue.

    c) Brightness: changes the skin brightness

Again, you can only make a chosen face darker, you can't lighten them up.
For a nice tan, turn the darkness down slightly, about 2 to 5 steps down
(to the left). For darker skin tones, try the halfway mark.

    d) Sunglasses: Choose sunglasses for your character. At least 94 to choose
    from.

Glasses can really change the look of a face... you'll have to
experiment to see which glasses look good on which faces.

 5. Uniform: Choose your team uniform. At least 117 to choose from. You will
only choose this for the Player, as your Partner will have the same uniform.

C. Assigning ability points to your partner

Before starting a new game in World Tour Mode, you'll be asked to assign
ability points to your partner. The more points assigned to an ability, the
better your partner will be at that ability. You are given 5 points, but there
are 7 attributes to choose from:

Serve, Receive, Attack, Block, Toss, Power, and Response.

In my opinion, Response, Toss, and Receive are the most important attributes at
this point. You can worry about other attributes later.

*Hint* - even with a newbie partner, it *is* possible to win the first few
games. Try to receive all serves... since the person that receives is the
person that attacks... and you do NOT want your partner attacking at this
point. When it is your turn to serve, hit high powered jump serves in either
the left or right hand corner. Unless you're playing Brazil or Cuba, your
opponent will probably fail to return the serve. You can also try moving
slightly to the left before serving, and serve a high powered jump serve
directly at the opponent on the right... not only will she fail to return the
serve, she'll fall... and thus block her teammate from reaching the ball in
time.

------------------------------
IV. LEVELING UP YOUR CHARACTER
------------------------------

A. General Info

To be successful at World Tour mode, you'll need to level up your partner. At
the end of each match, you'll be given ability points which can be used to
level up your partners attributes (kind of like an RPG). And during the match,
you can reprimand her if she's doing poorly, and praise her if she's doing
well. This will increase your "Teamwork Percentage", and the higher the
percentage, the better your partner will play. Be careful though, you'll lose
percentage points if you say the wrong thing!

B. Teamwork Percentage

 1. Timeouts

During the match, there will be a Timeout called for every 10 points scored
in the game. It doesn't matter which team scores the points... the score
 could be 10 to 0, 5 to 5, or 2 to 8.

During the Timeout, you will be given the opportunity to evaluate your
partners performance. You have 4 choices, and they are: Praise, Encourage,
Reprimand, or Do nothing. Your teamwork percentage will increase or decrease
 depending on your choices.

*HINT* - the longer the game lasts, the more timeouts there will be. If
you're playing Brazil and losing badly, try to score at least 6 points...
this will give you two opportunities to evaluate your partner and raise your
teamwork percentage. If you're playing the Netherlands and winning easily,
let them score a few points and draw the game out until the score is 15/15...
this will give you THREE chances to raise your teamwork percentage.

 2. Evaluating your partner

Praise - best used when your partner is playing reasonably well, and you are
ahead by several points. You'll lose percentage points if you are losing by a
wide margin, or if your partner is actually playing quite poorly.

Encourage - Encourage your partner when you are down a couple of points, and
you are playing better than your partner. You may lose points if you are
winning/ losing by a wide margin, or if your partner is actually playing
 better than you are.

Reprimand - use this when your partner is playing horribly, and you are
losing the game. Best used at the beginning of World Tour, when your
character is at low levels. You will lose points if you reprimand her when
she is playing better than you are!

Do nothing - best used when you are tied or slightly ahead. You may lose
points if your partner is doing well and you are ahead by several points...
when your partner deserves praise, give her praise!

*HINT* - when Teamwork Percentage is at 100%, choose Do nothing most of the
time. It's less risky than the other choices, and if you happen to lose a
couple of points, they can easily be regained by Praising your partner the
next time your team is ahead.

C. Earning Ability Points

At the end of each match, you earn more ability points. The number of points
varies depending on how well you did in the match.

Match Points - you earn 1 point for a loss, 3 points for a win

Teamwork Points - earn 2 points if your percentage decreases, 3 if your
percentage increases

You also get an additional 2 points if you win 1st place in any Round of the
World Tour.

So, you earn a minimum of 3 points, and a maximum of 8.

Assign ability points as you see fit. SEGA recommends that you strive for a
balanced character. For instance, it won't do you any good to level up your
attacks or serves, if power is still low.

*HINT* - Your partner will be ineffective at blocking until her block attribute
is quite high... say 10 to 15... so I'd suggest ignoring that attribute for the
first few rounds, and focusing on response, toss, receive, attack, power, etc.

As your partner's attributes increase, so does her overall level.. her maximum
level is 100, and the maximum level of each attribute is 20. You should have no
trouble completely leveling up your character by the final round.

B. Unlockable by beating Game Modes

 1. ARCADE

    a) Clear Arcade mode with Japan team - Unlocks uniform (103, 104)
    b) Clear Arcade mode 1st time - Unlocks uniform (87, 88)
    c) Clear Arcade mode 2nd time - Unlocks uniform (90, 91)
    d) Clear Arcade mode 3rd time - Unlocks uniform (93, 94)

 2. WORLD TOUR

    a) Clear World Tour - Unlocks uniform (96~102); sunglasses (86~93); hair
    (71~74)
    b) Clear World Tour mode with overall 1st place - Unlocks uniforms
    (89, 92, 95)
    c) Defeat Gold & Silver "Dural team" - Unlocks face (54, 55)
    d) Defeat Metallic Black "Dural team" - Unlocks face (56)

*Note: There is still some confusion over the correct way to make the
"Dural" teams appear. Supposedly you need to: win overall 1st place in
World Tour with a 100% teamwork percentage for the Gold/Silver team to
appear, and win with less than 30% teamwork for the Black team to appear.
I have not yet confirmed this, however.

 3. TUTORIAL

    a) Complete all the training courses in Tutorial mode - Unlocks uniforms
    (71~86)
