What is a pitfall? What does it do? Is it a Nintendo game? I have
seen this question asked so many times. The Pitfall is a prank item!

I decided to make an FAQ on the pitfall to help people out when it
comes to the semi-elusive pitfall. It's not a game. At all.

QUESTION 1:
  What is a Pitfall?

ANSWER 1:
A Pitfall is a white ball with a red exclamation point on it.
  It is a prank item.

QUESTION 2:
  What does it do?

ANSWER 2:
When buried, it makes a star-like marking on the ground. When
someone (either you, your friends, or an animal neighbor) steps
onto the ground where the pitfall is buried, they will fall into
the hole. Animal neighbors are freed by you either talking to them,
or walking out of the acre (with them far enough from your view in
the new acre). Humans, however, need to press the buttons and
jiggle the control stick until they are freed.

QUESTION 3:
  Is it an NES game?

ANSWER 3:
Note how it looks like a ball, and not the NES console or an NES
cartridge. Obviously, you cannot fit a ball into an NES. In other
words, A PITFALL IS NOT AN NES GAME!!!!

QUESTION 4:
  Can I sell it?

ANSWER 4:
Nook will not pay anything for a pitfall, but he will take it off
  your hands for free.

QUESTION 5:
Does it affect my feng shui?

ANSWER 5:
No, not that I know of.

QUESTION 6:
Will the HRA change its rating of my house if I have a pitfall as
  part of the layout?

ANSWER 6:
Yes. You will lose points as they consider it to be junk.

QUESTION 7:
Will an animal be able to take the pitfall from me, as they do
  my furniture or money?

ANSWER 7:
Animals do not care for the pitfall. You can carry it around
in your pocket, without worrying that an animal will want it
or trick you into selling/trading it. The only exception is on
Halloween, in which the pitfall is at risk of being replaced
  by a Jack-O-lantern or a Jack-in-the-Box.

QUESTION 8:
Hey! It doesn't work! I tried to push Saharah into it, and she
  didn't fall in!

ANSWER 8:
Visitors, neighbors dressed like Jack, and animals engaging in
a holiday celebration are unaffected by a pitfall.

QUESTION 9:
It's called a pitfall...there is a game out there called Pitfall...

ANSWER 9:
The Pitfall is NOT A GAME! PERIOD! It is a prank item, not a
video game, not a board game, and definately NOT AN NES GAME!!!!
Just because it shares its name with a game DOES NOT MAKE IT ONE!

QUESTION 10:
Can I mail a pitfall to someone?

ANSWER 10:
  Yes.

QUESTION 11:
Where can I get a pitfall?

ANSWER 11:
Some animals go on and on about a "treasure". More likely than not,
it's a pitfall they are speaking about. They will either sell it to
you or give it to you for free, provided you win a little test they
give. If you want it that badly, avoid walking around with over
3,000 bells in your wallet as they may rip you off. The animal will
ask if you want to buy their treasure from them. If you want it, say
"yes". The best way to get it is from an athlete or a sweetie. The
Valley girl is a HORRIBLE choice, as one way or another you will pay
with ALL THE MONEY IN YOUR WALLET. The athlete, on the other hand,
gives the pitfall to you no matter what you guess.

QUESTION 12:
How else can I get it?

ANSWER 12:
You must win it from an animal, or find it in a treasure hunt.
You can even intercept a human friend's booby trap and dig one
up to keep or bury somehwere else.

QUESTION 13:
How do I know that the animal is going to gamble a pitfall?

ANSWER:
The animals give you a message to indicate that they are going
to give one away. Here's some of them:

SNOB: They have three bags. One of the bags may have a pitfall.
They will ask if you want to pay a certain amount to
pick a bag and obtain its contents.

RECOMMENDED?: Only if you don't mind paying the determined
price for the pitfall, or one of the items they
                  have in the other bags.

ATHLETE: They will challenge you to an arm-wrestling match.
You get his prize whether you win or lose, but the
winner gets all the money in your wallet. If you
accept, they will change their mind and ask if you'd
like to play a guessing game instead. Accept, and you
must guess how many push-ups they did the other day.
Guess right, and you get a free pitfall. Guess wrong,
and the pitfall has cost you all the money in your wallet!

RECOMMENDED?: Somewhat, if you are a gambler and don't mind
paying for a pitfall. You get it either way...

VALLEY GIRL: They will tell you that they have a rare treasure and
ask if you are willing to pay all the money in your
wallet. Suddenly, their greed gets the best of them
(as usual) and the rules have changed: You're gonna
lose every dime in our wallet, and now getting the
pitfall is hit or miss. You must pick a hand. One has
the pitfall, one has a boring piece of furniture. If
you guess right, you get the pitfall. Guess wrong, and
they'll laugh all the way to the bank keeping both the
             pitfall AND your money.

RECOMMENDED?: No. They are sneaks and thieves. I only recommend
this is you REALLY need to collect more furniture.

SWEETIE: They will have you pick right or left. You need not pay.
If you get the right hand, you'll get a free piece of
furniture. You may even get a pitfall instead, to which
they reply: "Don't bury it anywhere!" I won't. Heh heh heh...

RECOMMENDED?: Definitely! Though you may not always get a pitfall
or guess the right hand, it's free!

QUESTION 14:
Isn't the pitfall a game? I mean, it's got the same name as the atari
  game, at least...

 ANSWER 14:
Don't make me use ALL CAPS! Read Question and Answer 9...

QUESTION 15:
How exactly do I use a pitfall?

ANSWER 15:
  Follow these six easy steps:

1. Get a pitfall.

2. Make sure it's in your pocket.

3. Dig a hole.

4. Bury the pitfall in the hole.

5. Let a person or animal walk on it. (Or just push the animal in!)

6. Let the fun begin! Hahahaha!

------In conclusion:
This is how a pitfall is used. Hopefully this FAQ will answer all
your questions about the Pitfall. If you have another question about the
pitfall that the FAQ above does not answer, please email me at
[email protected] so that I may answer it (if I can) and possibly
add it to the FAQ list.

Non-questions involving the pitfall: If you have any information that
I did not cover (i.e., more ways to get a pitfall, its effects on
feng shui and other aspects, etc.), you may email me with your discovery,
and I will add it here...AND, in the version history, I will give you
credit for it!
