-Introduction
Yo, welcome to Richard Walker's Wave Race for GameBoy FAQ! This was the fourth
GameBoy game I ever got. But sentimental shiznit aside, this FAQ is here because
for some crazy reason there were no others at GameFAQs. So... here you go
people! Wave Race is a notably unique racer as you not only race on water, but
it also has an almost unheard of means of linking... heard of the four-player
link cord device? Probably not but I digress; enjoy the FAQ.

-Version history
01/01/06- Happy new year! Made some corrections, and added a new to the 'Tips
before you start' section.
31/05/05- Whee. Made some minor changes including layout fixes, corrections on
spelling mistakes, and rewriting some shiznit.
31/07/04- Made a few layout fixes.
01/11/03- Wave Race FAQ is created!

-Getting started
Make sure your GameBoy is switched off. Then insert your Wave Race cartridge.
Now switch on your GameBoy.

For a two player game, make sure the GameBoys are switched off, then insert a
Wave Race cartridge into each GameBoy. Afterwards, insert a GameBoy link cable
into each GameBoy. Now switch on both GameBoys.

For a three or four player game, make sure the GameBoys are switched off, then
insert a Wave Race cartridge into each GameBoy. Afterwards, insert a the link
from a four player adapter into one GameBoy. Then insert a link cable into the
two or three other GameBoys, and connect it all up to the four player adapter.
Now switch on all GameBoys.

-Basic information
This is a racing game, except for one distinguishing feature... like the name
suggests, the races are toughed out on water There are two types of game:
Slalom, in whicih you have to get as many points as you can, and Circuit is your
none-more-than-average racing lap per lap. On each of these games, there are
three bike classes(550cc, 650cc, and 800cc. The more powerful the PWC, the
harder it is to control), and when you accumulate a number of points with a PWC,
you move up to the next stage... with more levels as you progress. Unlike other
GameBoy games of it's time, Wave Race features a Practice mode, a Save feature,
and can use the near-unheard of four player link adapter.

-Controls
MENU CONTROLS
A button: Confirm
B button: Cancel
D pad: Move cursor

IN GAME CONTROLS
A button: Turbo accelerate
B button: Accelerate, charge up turbo meter
D pad: Turn the PWC left or right, shift bodyweight forward or backwards(Up or
down respectively)
Start button: Pause

One thing I detest is the lack of handbrake on a PWC... oh well. Give me my
scooter anyday. Bah.

-Game modes
There are three game modes. Including...

1P
This is your average one player mode found in all racing games.

PRACTICE
Here, you can perfect your driving skills before you head into no man's land-
or, 1P mode as the game refers it to. You can race any game, any track. If you
make a new record here, it will be saved into the game cartridge.

MULTI
With two, three, and even four friends(Or colleagues, if your goofing off at
work), you can link and play Slalom or Circuit. You will need a four player
adapter, and three link cables... see the 'Getting started' section for info on
how to link up.

There are two challenges in all of these modes. Including...

CIRCUIT
Classic racing at it's finest. You know the drill, just race around the
courses, and win. Easy peasy, lemon freakin' squeasy. Well, not quite because
there are plenty of obstacles hanging around, as well as the other racers(Who
actually seem quicker than you) so it's anything but easy(Totally useless fact
#1: Orginally, Richard absolutely sucked at Circuit mode).

SLALOM
A simple 'Capture the flag' kind of game. You- and the other racers- will try
to get as many goals as you can. Only one PWC can get any one goal once.
Whoever has the most points at the end of the race wins! Like in Circuit mode,
the number of stages increases by two every class you move up.

Also on the title screen, there's a record section which holds records for
EVERY course. And if your saved data and record becomes that shameful, take the
cowards way out and get rid of your data by holding the Start and Select buttons
down on the title screen.

-Course obstacles and powerups
Here is a helpful stuff, and not so helpful things on the course...

CORNER PYLON
Only in Circuit mode, you must race AROUND these to continue. If you do race
around them, a smiley face will appear. If you don't, you can't complete the
race, simple as. I spent about a year wondering why I couldn't finish Circuit
mode, so don't make the same lame mistake I did.

POINT PYLON
Exclusive to Slalom mode. You must run through a pair of these- referred into
this FAQ as simply goals. Remember, only the first PWC that runs through a goal
can claim it, make sure it's you, or go to hell.

JUMP PLATFORM
A boat can jump way over obstacles, and other racers. They'll be vital if you
want to complete Slalom mode. If you hold back while riding over, you will jump
further but you will slip on landing. If you hold forward you will make a
shorter jump, but you won't slip on the landing. Decisions, decisions...

SPIRAL
If you ride over one of these, you will spin around and lose control of your
PWC. Like you were in control of it anyway. Bah.

SHALLOW
Crap! Looks like a crusty piece of toast, and makes a crusty noise when you do
ride over it(Totally useless fact #2: Richard cringes at the sound of riding
over a Shallow). They slows you down, so avoid them at all costs.

ARROWS
If your PWC takes a ride over a pair of arrows, you will go in the direction of
the arrow. It's awkward to ride in the opposite direction of it.

DOLPHIN
The Dolphin is the most best powerup you can get in the entire game. Pick up
one, and not only are you invincible to the obstacles above, your bike will be
at tiptop speed and you won't slip sideways. What a bargain, eh...

OCTOPUS
Go over an Octopus, and smash into other members and steal their turbo power.
Useful... unless your steering skills are equal to the bastard dog down my road.

-Codes and secrets
I don't believe there are any cheats for this game. If you have any cheats...
drop by the 'Contact' section already.

-Tips before you start
A few tips before you begin playing Wave Race. Read up, sucka.

1)DON'T RELY ON THE TURBO
Learn how to ride through this hard game without the turbo meter. Don't use
too much of it either- at times when you really need it it won't be there!
Only use it when you REALLY need it, and towards the end of the race(Or when
insanely chasing that last point, depending on what mode you're in).
2)DON'T FOLLOW THE CROWD
What that means in Slalom mode is don't follow the other racers. Because,
you'll definitely not get any goals. Separate yourself from the crowd and
pursue goals where there aren't any other racers, because they, y'know, suck.
3)MASTER THE JUMP PLATFORMS
If you have to, go to Practice mode. Do anything, but just make sure you know
just how to make the jumps, it is totally VITAL. You will suffer and suffer
horribly if you can't control your PWC while going over a jumping beam.

-The final word
Cheers for reading my Wave Race FAQ. It's a pretty awesome game, but also a
tough one, so hopefully this FAQ will help you a little with the challenges of
Wave Race. Also, this work would be pretty pointless if nobody read it, so thank
you.

And you should check out my other FAQs, reviews, and other crap I've submitted.
Go on... there's nothing good on TV anymore anyway. This is your substitute.
