V-Rally Championship Edition is a racing simulation game for Game Boy. It's all
about rally racing so dirt, snow, and rain all play major factors on every
track. There are two game modes: Arcade and Championship. Arcade has three
difficulties, which you can unlock by finishing the previous difficulty.
Championship is about completing the standings with the most points.

                          _________________________

A key factor in this game is track conditions, whether it's rain, snow, or
dirt. These all will affect your grip. Fortunately, it doesn't seem to affect
you too much during the turn. What it does is make you slide coming out of the
turn. If it's a dirt track or the weather is particularly bad, make sure to
keep turning when you come out of the turn or you may slide off the track and
crash.

You don't get an option between an automatic or manual transmission in this
game. It's one less thing to worry about really although you'll notice the game
doesn't downshift too much anyway so missing out on this feature isn't
detracting too much from the game itself.

There is no trick to starting in this game. A lot of racing games have a set
time you should start hitting the accelerator to get the best start possible
once the race starts but it makes no difference in V-Rally. If you hold the
accelerator the whole time, there's no penalty, and you will accelerate just as
quickly as if you timed it better. As a result, I suggest always just holding
the accelerator at the start of a race to make sure not to lose any precious
seconds.

Overtaking other cars is one of the two big challenges of the game. Bumping
into them lightly will slow you down big time. When this happens, they will
probably pass you and bump you again, slowing you down further. This does not
slow down other cars. If you hit them really hard, you'll flip your car and
will have to wait until you stop, then your car will finally respawn from a
dead stop. Cars will start turns on the inside of the turn and slide to the
outside. If you're not in good position to pass them, you're better off slowing
down rather than risking trying to squeeze into a tight area, especially around
a turn.

Hazards are your other big challenge. There are three kinds of hazards, all
which you will have warnings for with the triangular exclamation point sign.
You basically have three types of hazards:

JUMPS     You can see jumps coming because you'll just start to suddenly go
uphill quickly. If you go too fast, your car will flip when you land
and you'll have to wait until you stop before your car can respawn.
If you slow down to about 185 kph (or even slower,) you can land
         safely and keep going.

OIL       Oil slicks are just big black patches on the road, they can be
anywhere so keep an eye out when the hazard warning comes up. If you
drive over them, your car will swerve and you'll lose control. You
will mostly go straight so if you don't have a turn right away, oil
isn't much of a problem. The faster you go, the more time you lose
         control of the car.

BARRIERS  Barriers can be one of two things depending on the track, they will
be either gates or rocks. They both do the same thing and are about
the same size. Hitting them will cause you to crash and you'll have
to wait to reset your car.

Courses aren't always the same either. It doesn't make much sense to try to
memorize tracks for that reason. You want to learn how to deal with hazards and
overtaking cars in arcade mode and then take what you learned to championship
mode. This game can be hard because it's so fast and so unpredictable. Try out
every car and find what you like, learn about overtaking cars and hazards.
That's what the game is all about.

The course order will always be the same. You get a certain amount of points
for every position you finish and have to complete all ten tracks in the game.
Wherever you finish in the standings in the end of that is where you finish the
game. See below for the order of tracks and for what position will give you how
many points.

There are only four different cars you can use in V-Rally Championship Edition.
Each one has a healthy balance to fit your play style so don't necessarily go
for the car name you like, think about how you drive and pick something you
like. When playing in arcade mode, rather than championship, pick the car that
is best for the track. If there are a lot of turns, max speed isn't going to do
you much good. Just be situational with your choices.

Here is your very basic track. There are no really sharp turns and no hazards
anywhere on the track. If you get some good luck with cars you're overtaking,
you can take the Subaru Impreza and never let go of the accelerator.

                                 New Zealand
                          _________________________

This track can be a bit daunting even for easy difficulty. It's on dirt so
you'll be sliding more around turns. It's wise to let go of the gas on sharper
turns. There's a couple hairpin turns in this track which will also require
braking before entering the turn.
                          _________________________

                                   Safari
                          _________________________

Here's another dirt track so it can make you slide a bit during turns. Watch
for the hazards. It's a jump and if you go too fast over it, you will flip your
car even if you're going straight. Just slow down a bit when you see the hazard
sign pop up which is just a triangle with an exclamation point.

                                    Italy
                          _________________________

The most annoying part of this track is the hazards. There are a lot of them
and it's not jumps like in Safari. The hazards on this track are all the
obstacles on each side of the course. There are also plenty of hairpin turns
that will require you to brake a bit before entering. This track is on pavement
though so you'll get maximum grip.
                          _________________________

                                 French Alps
                          _________________________

It snows here, which can lead to A LOT of sliding. Be very cautious around
every corner, especially your hair pin turns. Make sure to brake on them.
You'll slide a lot coming out of the turns especially so plan ahead for those.
There are also hazards here that take up the right half of the track. Whenever
you see a hazard icon, move to the left half of the track immediately.
                          _________________________

                                  Indonesia
                          _________________________

The hazards can be tricky on this track. It's either going to be a gate on the
left side or two sets of rocks on the track. Think if there's five lanes, it
would be in the second and fourth lanes. You can stay in the dead center or far
right for any hazard and be safe. The other thing to be mindful of on this
track is the hair pin turns are a lot sharper than any you've come across in
the easy and medium difficulty tracks. Be very mindful if you have a car that
doesn't have good grip on those because this is a dirt track.
                          _________________________

                                  Argentina
                          _________________________

There will be rain here which means you're in for some slippery turns. This
isn't nearly as slippery as the snow in the French Alps though. There are also
jump hazards on this track for the first time since Safari. Just slow down a
bit before entering the jumps.
                          _________________________

                                   Greece
                          _________________________

This track is probably the easiest of the hardest courses. The biggest
difference compared to other tracks is the fact that there are so many
different kinds of hazards. This track has jump hazards and gate and oil
hazards as well. The gate and oil hazards will always be on the left side of
the track, so just stay to the right when you see a hazard and brake if you see
it start to go uphill.
                          _________________________

                                   England
                          _________________________

Here's another rain track so be mindful of traction, especially on the exit of
turns. The really tricky thing to this track is the hazards. This has every
kind of hazard, similar to Greece, but they will be all over, not just to one
side. All of the hazards except for the next hazard after the second and third
jump will be on the left or middle of the track, so hug the right side and
brake on those jumps. After the second and third jumps, the hazards will be a
gate to the right, oil slick in the middle, and another gate to the left in
quick succession. You could try to weave between them, but you can also hit the
oil slick in the middle. You'll gain traction before you need to turn again.
The only thing that could screw you up on those turns is if there's a car to
overtake that blocks you.

                                   Sweden
                          _________________________

Sweden is the last of the hard tracks and it shows. It throws every hard thing
at you. To start, it's in snow, the most slippery terrain in the game. The
hazards are all over the place. They can be boulders on either side or in the
middle. There are also jumps. The track is pretty long which leaves more room
for error but also gives you a chance to catch up if you only make a couple
mistakes. You're just going to have to be on your toes for this one and use
every strategy you've learned to get this far, especially for the hazards.
