Introduction
===================================================================[SF-INT]===
Hey guys, Bkstunt here doing a walkthrough on the GameBoy game Sumo Fighter.
Sumo Fighter is of course based off of the legendary Japanese martial art of
Sumo Wrestling. While Sumo Wrestling is only really practiced proffesionally
in Japan, it is still known the world over since it has been practiced for
centuries now. Sumo Fighter therefore takes a Sumo Wrestler and puts him in a
fighting game. Why not!? Sure, Sumo Wrestler usually fare poorly against every
other martial arts known to man, but this is a video game. Lighten up.
This guide is a direct result of Gamefaqs collection of faqers trying to put
up a complete FAQ for EVERY GameBoy game that was ever released. Sumo Fighter
itself actually isn't that bad, as it has mini-games, good stage progression,
and RPG elements in it.
Speaking of the GameBoy Completion Project, if you want to help we'd love to
have you on board. These older games AREN'T that hard to write for!
You can find the gamefaqs topic about it here:

You can find the webpage that was made for it here:

Anyway, enjoy the guide. Below is the rest of the stuff I put in all my
guides, so feel free to shoot me an email or whatnot!

First of all, let me say that my primary motivation for writing guides is,
and always will be, for the gamer. However, as I've learned by writing just
a few guides on new games, it can hit your pocket book! I wish they'd give me
these games so I could crank out great guides, but they don't! Ah, maybe one
day!
Until then, if you've found this guide helpful please consider donating to

Controls
===================================================================[SF-CON]===
Here you can find the controls for this game. There's more than I thought
there would be! I usually do fancy ASCii art, but not for GameBoy games...
Directional Pad: Controls movement.
A Button: Jump. Hold for greater distance.
B Button: Strike (Open-Palm attack). Level this up with the HAND power.
Start Button: Goes to status menu.
Select Button: Not Used.
Double-Tap Left/Right: Run to the Left/Right.
Double-Tap Left/Right + B: Do a headbutt to the Left/Right.
Down + A: Do a SHIKO, a leg-stomp of sorts. Stuns enemies AND hurts them.
Level this up with the FOOT power.
Up + B (with the barrel powerup): Send a flying hand at an enemy.

Game Basics & Tips
===================================================================[SF-GBT]===
o You can play on EASY or HARD. I'm no machoist and this is only a completion
FAQ, so I'm playing on easy.
o This game has RPG aspects. Press start to see your stats. You have a
picture of a HAND (Strike Attacks), a FOOT (Stomp Attacks) and a HEART
(Health).
o Always try and play/win the BONUS ROUNDS. Seriously, seek them out as they
are a huge sourse of EX (experience) points.
o If you can (and you can't, not unless you can use save states) try to get
the Sumo Wrestler minigames in the bonus rounds.
o You can knock enemies off the screen.
o The screen extends vertically! Be sure to look for secrets upwards.
o Each enemy you knock off/kill gives you points.
o Enemies can drop items randomly.
o Always check for breakable items.

Walkthrough
==============================================================================
As the game starts, a unknown ninja comes along and steals a woman from the
street. Intolerable! We must stop this! Stage 1-1 of Area 1 will start now.
==============================================================================
Area 1
=====================================================================[SF-1]===
-----------
Stage 1-1
-----------
Ok, time to get started. Head to the right and you'll see a peasent run at
you. Be sure to smack him. You may as well get used to your controls. Try out
jumping and attacks, as well as double-tapping to run to the left and right.
Try attacking like that to.
Onwards go kill a hammer-man and then a small man. You'll get a rice bowl
from him, which gives you EX. Needless to say, you want to collect these items
and get the most EX that you can. Jump over the spikes and kill another
peasent. You'll see boulders here you can BREAK, so do so and hope for some
items. You will likely find a barrel here that gives you a hand powerup. You
can use it by pressing UP + B, and it'll shoot a hand out at the enemy.
A string of hammer-men and peasents await in an area with spikes and overhead
ledges. Take them out carefully. Past the upper piece of ground a peasent will
come at you from either side, so take them out quickly and check the nearby
boulders for goodies. Keep going past some peasents and stop at the NEXT ledge
where a hammer-man is. Jump on the ledge and to the upper left is a GATE. Jump
into it to find a BONUS STAGE (see the mini-game section for hints on these
stages).
(-NOTE-) This bonus stage should have SUMO WRESTLING on the left and ARM
WRESTLING on the right. The middle will not let you play anything.
After the bonus stage you will likely be able to level up some of your stats.
Go ahead and level something up (they are all useful). The end is coming up
soon. You'll see a tablet and the screen will stop scrolling. You have to
touch the tablet to end the level, but be sure to break the boulders first!
-----------
Stage 1-2
-----------
Ok let's go. Head forward and use the ledges to get past the large pit.
As you go down you'll see a new enemy come at you. He is dressed in a long
robe and will throw his straw hat at you, which will hurt if it touches you.
I'll call this guy a wanderer. As he throws his hat, jump back up to the ledge
and then back down to kill him. Head forward and another new enemy will show
up: the ronin. This guy has a samurai sword but will simply try to run into
you, so take him out.
Slowly go forward as there is a string of ronin coming up that are much easier
to kill one by one than together. Also be sure to break the boulders for items
once you get to them. You will see three ledges over spikes past the boulders,
and to the upper right of the right ledge is another BONUS STAGE opportunity.
After the bonus stage continue on breaking boulders and watching out for those
tricky wanderer enemies. After one more big gap that you cross with ledges,
you will see the end of the stage. Be SURE to break the boulders here, as you
will likely find a SUMO DOLL in one of them, which gives you an extra life!
Touch the stone to go to the next stage!
-----------
Stage 1-3
-----------
We get to go UP in this stage. Before going up, go break the rocks on the
right to find some powerups. Jump up and take out the ronin, then jump up
further to see a new enemy appear. I'm going to call this guy a "running
samurai" for lack of knowledge. He's running, that's for sure, and that's
about all he does so take him out and hit up the rocks to your right.
As you go up another runner will come in from the right, and then the left.
You can make a ronin appear, dropping from above but be careful of jumping
too far and not having any place to land (if you jump too far and put the
ground off-screen, going down will make you DIE!). Climb up the right side
of the screen and kill the runner, then jump to the BONUS STAGE icon on the
right of the screen.
After the bonus stage head up, kill the runner if you can be bothered to,
then get the rocks on the right. Keep heading up, breaking rocks and killing
the runners and ronin when you can until the screen stops scrolling. Boss
time!
(-NOTE-) Be sure to level up! This boss is much easier with at least 2 hand
upgrades, which you should easily afford by now.
~. BOSS: MARTIAL ARTIST
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Well, here's our first boss fight. The martial artist walks about 3/4th of
the screen and then does a jump kick. He is HARD to dodge, but it IS do-able
with a well-timed sprint/head butt as he leaps up.
What you should do though is just take the hit and then lay into him. With
about 2 upgrades into your strength you can take a hit and lay into him after.
Expect to take about 2 hits to win this way. Any other upgrades will just make
this easier, including more health or power.
After the fight, the boss will drop a stage-ending stone.
==============================================================================
Area 2
=====================================================================[SF-2]===
-----------
Stage 2-1
-----------
Time to go downward now. Head down and take out the short man below you and
then the rocks on the left. Further down on the right are more blocks but a
bit further down is a woman dressed up whose head goes up and down and shoots
balls at you! Yikes! I'll call this enemy a Maiko. Dodge a shot then simply
drop off the cliff and go beat her up to stop the attack.
Drop down below further and take out the new enemy, that I'll call a monster
girl, who comes in from the left. There's another maiko under you, so be
careful. Break the blocks on the right for goodies then go destroy the maiko.
Drop down again and take care of a short man who comes in from the right
before taking on the BONUS STAGE icon nearby.
After the bonus stage, keep heading down. You'll go through another short man
and maiko combo like when the stage first started but keep breaking rocks to
find a SUMO DOLL in one of them. From here simply drop down again and you'll
reach solid ground and the end of the stage.
-----------
Stage 2-2
-----------
A runner will come right at you so take him down. Head onward and break all
the blocks you fine. Take out another runner and keep going and soon you'll
see a short man TRANSFORM infront of you and gain a huge head. He gains a
little speed but is pretty harmless. I call this guy a transforming short man.
I'm original, aren't I? Keep breaking blocks and you'll find a SKULLCARD. Take
advantage of it and head onward as runners will flat out fall from the sky! In
this area you want to get on every ledge and jump upwards to find a BONUS
STAGE icon.
After the bonus stage keep heading forward and deal with the runners and
transforming short men. The end of this level is not far away, so keep
breaking blocks until you reach the stone.
-----------
Stage 2-3
-----------
Head forward breaking blocks and a ninja will come running at you (don't
jump to the second set of blocks, draw the ninja out). Next are some narrow
jumps. On the second small ground area, throw a hand to take the next ninja
out and secure ground for yourself (vice jumping over to him). You'll run
into another new enemy next: the muscleman. He's big and will throw bouncing
items at you, so dodge them (sprint) and take him out. Don't go further yet,
as the ledge nearby can get you to the BONUS STAGE up in the air to the upper
left.
After the bonus stage continue onwards. You'll face ninjas and musclemen like
the first half of this stage, but you'll be facing a LOT more spike pits now.
Some are so long that you can't jump over them, but they always put a ledge
above the spikes that you can dash jump to. The way this game works (if you
haven't noticed already) is that you can get halfway up the sprite of the
ledge and they will make it like you jumped on top of it.
Continue on and break every block you see. You should come across a FULL
HEALTH REFILL soon, and once you do it would be a grand idea to level up as
well. Yep, we got a boss fight coming up. Three to Four points in strength
and health each are a good idea.
~. BOSS: BEAST TAMER
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
This guy is easier to dodge comapred to the martial artist, but has a LOT
of health. What he will do is let loose a wolf on you which will run to the
left at you (you can either duck and kill it or jump over it) and then he
will walk all the way to the left and back to the right. He'll keep on
repeating that pattern from there.
Thankfully you can just plain jump over him, which you should do while
taking shots at him. Once you wear down his health you could even take some
hits and REALLY lay into him.
After the fight, the boss will drop a stage-ending stone.
==============================================================================
Area 3
=====================================================================[SF-3]===
-----------
Stage 3-1
-----------
Walk forwards and you'll run into a new enemy: the Jumping Peasent. He will
walk along like a normal peasent but will occasionally jump-kick, so watch
out for that. Past that two monster girls will greet you. Take them out and
take out the maiko after that. You'll see a square of blocks past her, but
DO NOT destroy them. Instead, get on top of them as the BONUS STAGE can be
reached to the upper right.
After the bonus stage, like most stages, you'll have to continue on jumping
over small spike pits while killing monster girls, jumping peasents, and those
damn maiko enemies. Keep breaking rocks as well as you should find a FULL HP
item as you go. Keep fighting eastward to find the end of the level.
-----------
Stage 3-2
-----------
Well, we're going to meet a lot of new people. Head east and you'll see an OLD
MAN fall from the sky (which is what I'm calling him). He tries to pinch you
or some weirdness... he's easy to take out. Past him is a tall VAIN WOMAN
(again, what I am calling her) who is also easy to take out. She can drop the
skull item which gives you like 3000 points (wow!). However, think twice
before picking these skulls up. They have a chance of TAKING AWAY ALL OF YOUR
EX and taking a bar of health away! It's probably best to be safe and ignore
them.
Further in you'll meet the RACCOON BOY, who is just like the MAIKO enemy,
except he throws onions at you! Ha! Also, notice that he's standing on corn
stalks. You can break these stalks and hopefully find items like them (they
are like barrels and rocks). Keep on pressing on killing those three enemies.
You'll see bamboo spikes that you'll need to dash jump over, so be careful
of them. Further on you'll see the BONUS STAGE buried under a ton of rocks, so
break up the rocks, collect the goodies, and enter the BONUS STAGE.
There isn't much after the bonus stage: just a lot of corn stalks and a couple
of old men until the end of the stage.
-----------
Stage 3-3
-----------
Another climbing level. Climb up the right side and kill the ninja. Keep
heading up and kill the ronin. Again, with these upwards levels, be careful
of jumping too high and taking the floor out from underneath you. There are
pots here that you can break for goodies. Keep heading upwards and you'll see
the BONUS STAGE to the right of some ledge, so enter it!
Keep heading up and breaking pots so you can find a FULL HP item. Yep, it's
almost boss time again. Be sure to level up. I had max STR and HP by this
point, but stomp power is really good in this battle as well. Keep heading up
until the screen stops scrolling and you'll face your next boss:
~. BOSS: LORD ODA
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
This guy is the hardest yet. Mostly because he has a lot of health. You
should note that the battle area has an upper ledge that you can stand on
and use to jump over the boss. The boss (who I just named Lord Oda for the
hell of it) runs back and forth, doing high jump-kicks every now and again.
To make this fight easier, wait until the boss starts his journey to the
left (or right), jump to where he was, and stomp. This will hurt him while
keeping you safe. You can also try to jump in behind him and hurt him that
way. Those are the safe ways to hurt him. Alternately, if you are strong
enough, you can take a hit and hurt him as well but only do that when you
KNOW you are going to win.
After the fight, the boss will drop a stage-ending stone.
==============================================================================
Area 4
=====================================================================[SF-4]===
-----------
Stage 4-1
-----------
Head forward and take out the jumping peasents and runners. There are a lot
of small ledges in this stage and the enemies will often just fall down them.
Bah, a waste if you ask me. Keep going forward and get what corn stalks you
can until you see the BONUS STAGE on the ground surrounded by rocks.
After the bonus stage it is a short jog east and one or two jumps over some
bamboo spikes to find the stage ending stone.
-----------
Stage 4-2
-----------
For starters, DO NOT break the first box you see. Instead, use it to jump
over the map it's by. From here you'll see runners, monster children and the
return of maiko enemies. Keep battling your way forwards and keep your eyes
peeled for a BONUS STAGE sign by a box on the ground (it kind of blends in,
so be sure to look out for it).
AFTER the bonus stage, be VERY CAREFUL of what boxes you break. There is a
series of jumps like the first one in this stage, so take them in stride with
your dashing jumps. Also, there may be enemies that appear under you as you
jump and it is MUCH preferable to take a hit than drop down a hole. Keep going
forward and touch the stone to end the level.
-----------
Stage 4-3
-----------
This stage is... REALLY reminiscent of the first stage. You even have the
same enemies. As such, this really shouldn't be a problem to you (you've
gotten THIS far after all). After a few ledges be sure to get on every one
and jump up to find the BONUS STAGE of this level.
After the bonus stage do NOT break the rocks by the gaps as some of them are
HUGE, so look before you break. Leave yourself the 2 rock height rocks to
jump over the gaps. The rest of this stage is killing peasents and small men
and jumping over those wide gaps, so be careful. Once the stage turns into
pure dirt get ready for a boss:
~. BOSS: DIGGER
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
This guy is HARD AS HELL if you don't know what you're doing. Thanks to
youtube though I got to see how its done (after he kicked my ass three times
in a row). First of all, the boss digs under ground and later tries to pop
up undernearth you. Once he does, he will rise up into the air and fling EYES
at you.
What you want to do is get him (the boss) into a pattern. What worked for me
was standing on the left side of the screen. That way the boss will try to
rise up on that side. Hit him as he does so and then get in dodging mode. he
will throw an eye from up high down at you (you can duck underneath this or
just outright move a little to the left to dodge it) followed by an eye that
travels left to right along the ground. Jump over this one. You'll get used to
dodging these after awhile (it is a pattern after all) and the jump is up and
away.
It can be a slow process, but the above is the safest way to get through this
since you won't be hit.
After the fight, the boss will drop a stage-ending stone.
==============================================================================
Area 5
=====================================================================[SF-5]===
-----------
Stage 5-1
-----------
Here we have a moving up stage, which of course means watch how high you jump
lest you die. As you go upwards ledge by ledge (it is super linear) watch out
for hammer men coming down. Stay on the edge of new ledges you jump to and you
will be ok. As you go up you'll see the BONUS STAGE on the right-hand side.
May as well go visit it (you can get a lot of good EX here).
After the bonus stage, you'll be on solid ground. Keep heading up like before
but now two enemies at a time will come down. Use the same strategy and you
will be fine. Even if you take a hit or two it won't really matter as the end
of the stage is nearby on the left.
-----------
Stage 5-2
-----------
This stage is fairly straight forward. Head east and be especially careful
of the vain women because of the skulls they drop. You'll have to jump from
large boulder to large boulder next, with one horribly places (or cleverly
placed) racoon boy in the way. He will likely hit you, but carry on anyways.
Keep on jumping boulder to boulder and when you get to the bunch of small
rocks don't break them up but use them to jump higher as a BONUS STAGE can
be found to the upper right.
After that you'll go back to jumping from big boulder to big boulder, but
the end of the stage isn't far off. Keep on going and finish up strong.
-----------
Stage 5-3
-----------
This area is also pretty easy to navigate. You essentially have two levels
here, the lower path and the upper path. The upper path is the preferred
path of course as you can outright ignore enemies that get down there. That's
what you SHOULD be doing by this point: we don't want any fights on our way
to the boss. There is no bonus stage here either, and we really don't need
one. Hopefully you have everything leveled up.
The lower path in this area has breakable blocks that you can destroy in
case you DO need health, but avoid enemies and make your way to the end of
this short stage to fight the first of two bosses:
~. BOSS: BODYGUARD
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
It wouldn't be an ending without two boss fights, right? This guy is first,
and he acts a lot like the martial artist boss types we've faced in the past.
Do your stomping attack when he's far away and try to stun-lock him when he
gets close to you. Do NOT get stuck in a corner with him as I've seen him
glitch out and it's a fight you'll lose. To recap, stomp attack when he is
across the room and mash the attack button when he's close by to try and
stun lock him.
When he falls, he will drop a REFILL FULL HP item, so pick it up and get
ready for the final boss:
~. BOSS: SHOGUN
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Here we are, the final boss. I honestly think he's easier than the bodyguard
though. He has a samurai sword but just goes back and forth and tries to cut
you with it. Use your stomp attack when he is across the room (you can
sometimes get in two stomps) and mash on the attack button when he gets near
as even the FINAL BOSS can be stun-locked by your attacks. I realize this is
the same strategy as the bodyguard fight, but it WORKS, so why change it?
After the fight, the game will come out and say "Thank You! Bon Chan." It
will then say "Let's try hard!!" (assuming you played on easy mode). But THAT
endeavor is not for me. And as they say "Good Luck" if you do decide to try
it.
Congrats on beating Sumo Fighter!

Skull: 3000 Points
A... well, a skull. Gives you a LOT of points. This item can also take away
ALL of your current EX and drop your health down a level. Best avoided at
all costs.

Bosses
===================================================================[SF-BOS]===
AREA 1:
AREA 2:
AREA 3:
AREA 4:
AREA 5:

Minigames
===================================================================[SF-MIN]===
You can find BONUS STAGES as you play (I point out all the ones I found in
the guide) where you can play mini-games. Here's a list of the games you can
play.
It's always a good idea to find and play minigames whenever you can, as they
give you a lot of EX points.
------------
Sumo Match
------------
This minigame is the one with the sumo wrestler on the card.
THIS is the match you want to get as it has the highest rewards.
This is a fairly standard minigame in which you need to push the other sumo
wrestler out of the ring. You will see yourself and the other wrestler at the
top of the screen. At the bottom is a horizontal line with a cursor that
constantly goes up and down it. You can press B to stop the cursor. In the
middle of the line is some hands surrounded by darker boxes (and past that
are lighter boxes). Stop the cursor on the hands to push the sumo wrestler
back. Always aim for the hands and keep hitting them to win!
You will have to win three rounds to win it all. The general strategy is to
hit the MIDDLE of the hands both coming and going. With a little practice you
will win this one easy.
(-NOTE-) Once you get to Area 3 and beyond, it's a good idea to try to get
2-3 button presses in the middle area for each pass, which is hard
to do but possible.
-------
Kanji
-------
This card is the one with the kanji writing on it. It automatically FAILS you
and you won't get to play any minigames. Boo!
---------------
Arm Wrestling
---------------
This minigame is the one with the giant arm on the card.
Arm wrestling is pretty self-explanitory. You have a guy facing you and his
right are will either go to the left if YOU are winning or to the right if HE
is winning. In essence it is the exact same minigame as the sumo wrestling.
You have the same horizontal line with a cursor that constantly goes back and
forth. You press B to stop the cursor. Once again, aim for the MIDDLE of the
hands in the middle to push the arm wrestlers arm to the left.
You will have to win three rounds to win it all.
-----------------
Thumb Wrestling
-----------------
This minigame is the one with the hand on the card.
This minigame is a lot different than the other one. For starters it is more
of a "who can get closer to the middle" game than the other games. You still
have the same horizontal line with a cursor going back and forth and the goal
is still to get in the MIDDLE of the hands in the line, but the AI (the other
thumb wrestler) has a cursor as well!
There's more strategy in this game as well. For example, if the AI click with
their cursor, they will pin YOUR thumb down. NOW, you MUST hit your cursor
CLOSER to the middle just to FREE yourself. The opposite is true as well, if
you make your cursor stop the AI has to get closer to the middle just to free
themselves.
Knowing this, you SHOULD hit the cursor in the GREY/BLACK area as soon as
possible. The AI will likely free themselves fast, but you don't want to get
"behind" in this minigame. YOU want to do the pinning and make the AI free
itself instead of vice-versa. From there, after the AI is free of your poor
attempt you have more time to get your cursor in the exact middle and win!
If you find yourself behind and needing to free yourself take a moment to
focus and make sure you can do it, then once your free quickly put your cursor
down to get ahead and win from there.
