much profit anyway, but that's not the point. This took time and effort, and
I just wanted to save a memory of a puzzle game and the odd solutions any way
I could. Please send me an email referring to me and this guide by name if

1. INTRODUCTION
Shikinjou is a weird game. It seems simple enough--push tiles around so
identical ones touch, then vanish. You've got a few pitfalls, such as "bad"
blocks that turn everything touching them into one of their own, and blocks
that hide other blocks--dissolve one and a new one appears below. You also
have sinkholes that cause you to restart. These tricks are kind of cheap, but
they give variety where there might not be any otherwise, and they drag a few
puzzles out. Still some big impressive looking levels collapse too quickly to
really be elegant and any of the themes you use are annoying to stare at.
While you don't really need a translation for passwords it's nice to have it
and those nice and capable folks at romhacking.net have just the file!
Download ninja.exe from there and select shikinjou.igs(unzipped from there)
and put it into a shikinjou.nes rom(unzipped from a website I won't reveal to
you, because that's a big naughty naughty shame shame everybody knows your
name) and voila you have the English version. The raster graphics will be in
Japanese but oh
well.
The between-level skits are still lame, too, but oh well. At least it was a
silly Mah Jongg variant I can beat easily. You should find it not too bad. I
found my favorite part to be improving on my original solution, but sadly the
game doesn't track that.
In the walkthrough below I specify moves with #U/D/L/R as # of moves
up/down/left/right. I try to pause for when you match multiple blocks, with
an extra asterisk for each above two. Sometimes I'll put a minus in to show a
block froze, just to make sure you're with me. I'm pretty sure I've got
things right but proofreading comments from readers are always helpful!
Note: I believe level 146 is conclusively unsolvable. If someone can show me
wrong, let me know.
2. CONTROLS
The arrows move as you'd expect. If you can push a block, it moves with you,
but you can't push a pair. A moves back to the last move before you pushed
something--there is a three move buffer here. B brings up a context menu. You
can enter an 8-digit password/passcode(A and u/d arrow) or go to the previous
or next levels. Or you can restart. You also get a password to pop up.
Passwords are random.
Stuff to watch for on the board includes invisible sinkholes...well, to note
once you fall in. If you run a block over a sinkhole square, it deactivates.
Also some blocks in their initial states will, when dissolved, reveal others
below. Sometimes it'll be one right by the exit that acts such. Then look for
another block that would match with that--or another block below a dissolved
block. Keep in mind there are only finitely many such possibilities for this,
and you can try to reveal a bunch of blocks without worrying about losing.
You also may need to locate squares-under-squares. Some tiles start with
another tile under them. This can be good or bad. If you move these tiles,
the tile underneath will not appear when you hit them.
You have two types of power ups in the game. First is a teleport which sends
you to a specific square. It is revealed when you match two tiles together at
specified squares in a probably otherwise impossible looking puzzle. Second
is the pick which will destroy whatever is in your way--a wall, or even a
regular brick you can push. It also appears under specific bricks that are
matched without being moved and is always critical to solving the puzzle. You
can't save it up, so be careful getting and using it.
The themes you can choose between are vampire(default,) knight(the other blue
guy) and ninja(red Russian Army looking guy.) These guys futz around in the
skits some.
3. STRATEGIES
--look at the bricks near the exit. What do you need to replace them with?
--just start matching bricks together. Which don't go?
--if 2 of one type of brick are lumped together, try for a threesome--leave
them as such
x |
--If you're having trouble excavating from a level, just try to kill every
square in its original space. Maybe something new will regenerate.
--For levels with a lot of regenerators, keep track of what's near the door
and look for another one around there.
--Don't be intimidated by "big" levels--a lot have an easy way through
--If you can picture a way a block can "walk" through without touching
negative sides that will make it go still, you can probably push it through.
If other blocks are in the way, look for ways to move them.
--make a map of sinkholes in a level and work your way around them, or run a
square over them early.
(cheats)
--to try to cheat to the next level, add 100 to your current password. Even
the passwords are transparent in this game!
--in fact, since every level gives several passwords, you can do this several
times. You also may want to jumble the first two numbers--keep their
difference the same.
--to edit a save state to clear everything out, take every 3-byte clump after
620 and change it to 0, excepting ones that end in 19. That's the door. The
location is the second byte, 1 being the UR and adding 1 for each square R
and 14(0xe) for each down.
--x799 and x7f0 in the RAM refer to the level you are on -1. You'll need to
add x54 for an fceu state. Just reset the board. If the level is over 128
then you need a 1-byte next and subtract 128 from what the first byte would
have been.

You look stuck but as usual with only one realistic way to the exit there's
not much to try.

This one had me going a bit. You pretty much need to check every square and
of course the ones that regenerate something are two of the most tempting to
move early--the inside fives.

You figure some pickaxes are hidden here, so keep trying. They're in the
third row but how to get them, not touch them(you then blow up ANYTHING) and
get to the door with just two blows?

Lots of sinkholes and you need to jump from one table to the next to run over
pits. But as usual there are only so many possibilities.

Until I find otherwise I am going to claim this is a bad level. I know there
are no hidden treasures(x620-x6e0 of the RAM reveal 64 blocks--3 bytes of
data each--and you can see 64 on the board, so nothing is hidden.) But you
get trapped in the DR unless I am really missing something.

Very messy looking but once the first pair goes the rest is much easier. Of
course, which pair should BE first is not clear either.

The last one and it's heinously easy if you remember blocks wipe out
sinkholes when they go over them. Keep it simple.

6. CREDITS
Thanks to CJayC as usual for such a great site and, though I hate to admit
it,
the people who write for more popular games so that these old school FAQs can
be
hosted for free.
Thanks to the usual GameFAQs gang. They know who they are, and you should,
too,
because they get some SERIOUS writing done. Good people too--bloomer,
falsehead,
Sashanan, Masters, Retro, Snow Dragon/Brui5ed Ego, ZoopSoul, and others I
forgot. OK, even Hydrophant in his current not-yet-banned message board
incarnation.
Thanks to the fceuxd programming group who let me try all sorts of new things
to
make this FAQ more detailed.
Thanks to the NES, GB and GBC completion project people. You all are a great
inspiration.
Thanks to the folks at romhacking.net for providing the translation of this.
