01.) INTRODUCTION G0100
===============================================================================
Welcome to 'Pingu' for the Gameboy, released by B-AI in 1993.
Pingu is a British-Swiss stop-motion clay animation known around the world. It
is a bit like a front-runner to Shaun the Sheep with the lack of language
required thus making it popular in every region. Pingu is a penguin that lives
in the Antartica with his family and friends. They tend to have stories around
fish but Pingu is a young boy and gets into all sort of other adventures.
The game is only released in Japan but the story elements do not need to be
understood, thus even non-Japanese gamers can get through it easily. The game
is aimed at a young audience.
Suggestions, comments or errors - tell me about it. Enjoy!
===============================================================================
02.) BASICS G0200
===============================================================================
The main story of Pingu consists of 4 short story-driven mini-games.
Additionally you can enter the iglos around the area aside from your home to
play a challenge. See each section for the respective guide.
Controls:
`````````
Although each game has its own control scheme the main game is controlled with
the D-Pad and A blows your horn. B tends to speed up Pingu. Very simple.
Push START when on the main game to see the passport which you can enter at
the main screen to continue later.
Although SELECT can be used to toggle options it is the same as using the
D-Pad. I just mention it for completeness sake.
===============================================================================
03.) STORY MODE G0300
===============================================================================
Story 1:
````````
Go right and eat the fish. Go either right or left until you get to the
fishing holes. Talk to the sea lion twice by interacting with the fish sign to
start the fishing game.
In this game you have to lower your fishing line with bait until and have a
fish bite it. As soon as the fish bites you want to bash the A button quickly
that it reaches you. The fish will give you either 5 or 10 points for normal
fish. The BIG fish is slow to reel in but is a mighty 15 or even 20 points so
they are usually worth going for. If the spotted fish or the sea lion eat the
bait, or a fish before you reel it in, you lose it and once you lose all bait
the game is over. You can move the line up, down and right to left as you want.
There is no point to reach the lower level fish if they are normal 5/10 point
ones as reeling them in will take a long time. Once you get 100 points the game
is complete.
Now that you are ready to go the fish flaps out of your hold and back into the
hole. What to do? Go fishing again of course! This time the goal is not 100
points but a massive 2,000,000 and the time limit is therefore 2 hours. Move
all your meetings and tell your friends you will be late because this is going
to take a while. Well, what's this? The sea lion helps you? Oh I guess this
story is finished after all, but Pingu knew you were scared thus the wink in
the ending scene ;)
Story 2:
````````
Pingu listens to loud rap music and his mom does not like that one bit. You
see, his mom is a die-hard Rammstein fan so she does not care for any other
muzak in her house at all. She then sends you and the li'l sister out that she
can listen to her loud music instead. Bummer!
Outside you will soon wonder in your buddy and forget all about the little
girl you had in tow, and as you run back she will somehow have landed on a
small piece of floating ice out in the bay. Interact with her for the game.
Basically you have to jump from platform to platform without falling into the
water. You have 3 lives to get through. The first few jumps lead to a platform
called "NEXT" and the screen loads up the next few jumps. After three screens
you will find your sister. The path is super linear with very few sane choices
to jump but the jumps themselves are the tough part here. Note that you can do
a smaller jump with a small push of the button whereas a long push jumps much
further and often way too far!
Story 3:
````````
As Pingu bends the ball like Beckham he "accidentally" kicks down grandpa's urn
and naturally big momma is not happy ONCE AGAIN (probably a raging domestic
desperate housewive anyway but that is for another story) if she sees this so
we better go buy another one at what just happens to be a vase merchant next
door (don't worry we'll find something to replace the ashes later). Continue
along the path to find three hockey dudes. They will challenge you.
This game is like air hockey. You can only stay on your side to hit the puck.
The aim is to score the other penguin's goal. Walking over the puck is slippy
so try to avoid that as you hit the ball with the A button. Naturally the only
easy way to score is when the opponent has slipped and left the goal wide open.
You can sprint with the B button. After you slip 3 goals past the opponent
you get to play a tougher one until you eventually beat Mr. Big Shot Penguin
himself. As they cry from their defeat you get a tasty fish.
Take the fish back to the pottery barn and, oh what is this? Another weirdo
penguin wanted a vase, what are the chances of that happening? Go back home and
not to spoil anything it was your chain pipe smoking dad who bought the vase
and you took all the effort to defeat the hockey brats (I found that
painstakingly hard...) for nothing, thanks a lot dad!! //sarcasm off
Story 4:
`````````
Walk left to see your mother caring more about your younger sibling than you.
Well isn't that typical that the young cute ones get all the attention. I speak
for all neglected older siblings in the world if I say... Pingu has got to
stand up to that! Instead you get kicked out of your house to live as a
homeless for the rest of your live. Oh wait there is more to this story, read
on.
Walk around and some punk will throw a snowball at you. Blow your trumpet at
this fool. In this mini-game you need to power up your snowball shot and let go
to release it at the other penguins. Position yourself with the d-pad until you
think you can get a good shot. The long distance requires a fully powered shot
whereas and the others medium. One trick is to not position yourself forward
when you power up the shot as Pingu will automatically turn around when firing
the snowball. This way you also do not stand so wide in the firing line. You
can even just stand behind a barrier and shoot out over it. You will not get
hurt here but a well placed shot goes over their barriers and hits them at the
head. Overall this is an easy game.
They played so long it became night but the lack of aurora lights means they
cannot see anymore. Your mom embraces you as you return home, guess now that
cutie sis is sleeping she finally has time for you, huh...
That is it already, short game, the End.
04.) CHALLENGES G0300
===============================================================================
15 Puzzle
`````````
This is a simple sliding block puzzle with a time limit. The aim is to
complete the picture you saw at the beginning in this alloted time. If you need
some info on sliding puzzles you better read up online than me repeating all
here:
http://www.instructables.com/id/How-To-Solve-The-15-Puzzle/
Pingris
```````
A variation of Tetris. You always get two blocks of faces falling down. The top
right tells you the next blocks. Flip them vertically/horizontally with the B
button. If you want to drop it down faster use the Down arrow. Remove blocks of
4s with the same face, but they have to be in one line either vertical or
horizontal. As the block reaches the bottom they will not stick out like in
the original Tetris, instead the blocks that can continue to drop will do so
until they eventually reach the bottom of this column. You can still control
the single block in this case, thus splitting up the blocks as you desire.
The mirror blocks can only be cleared with adjacent 4s being removed too. Once
all of these blocks have been removed the level is complete and the next stage
starts.
Hide and Seek
`````````````
You have 15 attempts to find the creatures hiding in the iglos. You can try
three times per attempt to find all three of them together. The game will tell
you which ones you found at the end of the three tries. Which iglo was correct
out of the three is up to you to find out by the process of elimination.
Bascially you do not want to randomly knock on the doors and hope you find all
three. This way you will most likely fail even the first round. Try this
instead: knock on all three bottom houses. Note which creature(s) in this row.
Do the same for row 2 and you can skip row 3 because you know the outcome
already. If you have one creature per row you now check columns 1 and 2 (again
the third row can be skipped because you know the outcome. This will again tell
you which creatures you find in these columns and cross- check this with the
findings of the rows. If one row has no creatures and the next step is simpler.
In this case you can do two iglos in the row that have two creatures and one in
the other. Again note how many creatures you find. If the two creatures do not
show again, use another combination of two in that row and switch the other row
iglo if you did not find the single creature. If still no luck the last step
will be the final combination of 2 and 1. It all takes a little brain to
remember the creature outcome but overall not that difficult.
The game continues the same way but each round you get one less attempts to
find the creatures, thus 14 attempts in the second round, 13 in the third round
and so on.
Fish Catch!
```````````
Use A to catch a fish jumping from one hole to another. It is not so easy to
see which hole they actually aim for.
If you run into the sealion you will be stunned for a second, thus you better
not! There is luckily only one sealion so if you see it you will not have to
worry about it popping out on another hole and can run around safely.
Use B to run around faster.
The timer runs 45 seconds.
Level 1 10 Fish
Level 2 11 Fish
Level 3 12 Fish
Level 4 13 Fish
Level 5 14 Fish
Level 6 15 Fish
Level 7 16 Fish
Level 8 17 Fish
Level 9 18 Fish
Level 10 19 Fish
Level 11 20 Fish
Level 12 21 Fish
Level 13 22 Fish
