While I do write all of my guides for free, it does take a lot of time and
effort to put them together. If you're feeling generous and want to show your
appreciation, I am gladly accepting donations. I don't know exactly what the
donations will be used for, but just know that you would definitely be helping
me make more quality FAQs! Even the smallest donation amounts are appreciated,
and are a great way to say how much you appreciate the work I do. If you do
decide you'd like to donate, please send the donations through PayPal at the
e-mail address listed below. Thank you so very much for considering this!!
[email protected]
By the way, this is also my contact e-mail, so if you want to contribute
something to this or any of my other FAQs, or have a question to ask about one
of them, go ahead and use this e-mail.

Welcome to another FAQ of mine. This one covers the GameBoy game PGA Tour '96.
Much as you would expect, this another one of your typical video games based
on the world-popular sport of golf.
..
That's all I have to say on this game. Enjoy.

Before the Game
===============
Main Menu/Title Screen:
```````````````````````
After the title screen, there are two options:
- New Game: Start a new game
- Old Game: Restart an old game via the use of a password
Assuming you choose "New Game", you'll get several more options:
- Practice Round: This mode seems to be just an exhibition round allowing one
or two humans
- Play in a Tournament: Play in a tournament against AI players for the best
score.
- Skins Challenge: This seems to be a one-on-one type of deal where a
win on a hole earns you money. The most money at the
end of 18 holes wins!
Player Customization:
`````````````````````
After choosing your mode, and number of players as applicable, the golfers
playing can be customized. Firstly, you can choose whether the players are
human or from the GameBoy (AI players). For the former, you'll also have to
write in a name; for the latter, you'll need to choose an AI player.
Next, you'll need to choose a set of clubs. Here are the various sets, with
individual club data below them:
Standard: Match: Skill: Power:
~ 1DR ~ 1DR ~ 1DR ~ 1DR
~ 3WD ~ 2WD ~ 3WD ~ 2WD

(As a note, PT (putter) can only be used on the green, where distance is then
measured in feet, not yards. In case you do not know this, three feet are in
one yard. A yard is slightly shorter than one meter. 12 inches are in a foot,
and one inch equals 2.54 centimeters.)
Finally, you'll choose the tees you'll use and the course to play on.
================
Playing the Game
================
When your name comes up on-screen, press the A Button to continue. You can now
use the D-Pad to view the hole map, along with the associated data (distance,
wind speed, etc.) below. The crosshair on the screen will choose the initial
direction in which you shoot, so be sure to take care of this -- and take into
account wind direction and speed!!
Press the A Button to continue. You should now use the D-Pad (Up/Down) to
choose your club. Press Select to affect your spin settings as well. You need
to use the D-Pad to navigate the "X" target on the ball in the appropriate
direction for one or two (if you go diagonally) effects.
- Topspin induces higher distances and speed
- Backspin causes you to not go as far, but stop easier
- Fade makes the ball angle to the right
- Draw makes the ball angle to the left
Press the A Button to continue. You will then prepare to use the power meter.
Press the A Button to begin filling it up and stop it at the desired percentage
(50%, 100%, whatever). After you do, the meter will go back down. The closer
you are to the 0% line, the straighter the ball will go - if you are early in
pressing the A Button here, the ball will go left, and right if you're late.
The mechanics remain fairly similar on the green. However, there, the main
force against you is the incline of the field, not the wind - the arrows on
the green will mark the direction in which your ball will go if on that
incline. Darker arrows mark steeper inclines. You will use Left/Right to
choose your putter, whose distances range from 5 to 80 feet in multiples of
five after having chosen your trajectory.
After you get the ball into the black hole, the hole, you'll continue onto the
next hole, whose mechanics are quite similar as well.
===============
Scoring Details
===============
Each given hole will have a set "par" on it. The par is the number of shots it
ideally takes to finish a hole. If you go under this, you earn points (your
score is negative, but that's good), and if you go over, you lose points (you
gain positive points). Hitting exactly par neither hurts or helps you.
The number of shots you take can also be affected by two other things - water
hazards and out-of-bounds area. Both are considered out-of-bounds. This bad
shot will count against you, and you'll be penalized an additional shot. For
example, if you hit the water on your first shot, consider the next shot you
take your third and not the second.
At the end of the hole, the number of shots you take, minus the par, is your
score. If such is positive, you went over (bogey); if negative, you did good by
going under (birdie, eagle, albatross). And, of course, par is neither good or
bad.
For the purposes of this game, you'll be using basic stroke play rules. That is
to say, whoever has the better score at the end of eighteen holes wins. The
only reason I mention this is that some use a win-loss basis rather than an
overall score, and this is just to remove confusion.
To the curious, the relatively official names for various shots:
O----------------O-----------------O
| Name of Shot | Score Changes |
O----------------O-----------------O
| Hole-in-One | (Par) - 1 |
| Albatross | -3 |
| Eagle | -2 |
| Birdie | -1 |
| Par | ±0 |
| Bogey | +1 |
| Double Bogey | +2 |
| Triple Bogey | +3 |
