Sometimes a game comes by that is just so quirky you can't help but love it,
especially when it's competent enough that it doesn't need to hide behind
the quirkiness to be fun. Parodius Da! is a game like, a Konami parody on
scrolling shooters that gets its anmed from being a Parody of Gradius. So
being the Gradius fan that I am, I was overwhelmed to be able to write for
this game.
One thing that esepcially excites me about the Parodius series is the high
incidence of Moai heads and the many varietes that come. But besides the Moai
there are many more loveable enemies to be seen, and wonderful environments to
explore such as a candy castle and a frozen penguin cave. The theme, along with
elements borrowed from Gradius and TwinBee set the scene for a superior game.
-=-=-=Vic Viper=-=-=-
Game Examples: Gradius, Salamander/Life Force
Comments: Vic Viper is the craft you'll most control in most Gradius games,
with the exception of a few, though it is the same ship as the Warp
Rattler, so if you see a ship called that, it's Vic. Taking a break
from battling Bacterion, Vic Viper retains most of the standard
Gradius abilities.
Missile: Missiles with feet, if they hit the ground they will run across it
until they eithe rhit an enemy or expire.
Double: Shoots one bullet forward, and one up at an angle.
Laser: A long stream. It's a powerful weapon, and I'd recommend it over the
double.
Options: Yellow balls that follow Vic around. When he fires his laser/double
and missiles, they will do the same. They follow Vic Viper but come
to a stop when he does.
Shield: Two balls arrive and guard Vic's front. They can take a pounding but
are easily hit by enemies/the floor when they're big and offer no
coverage from the back. Shrink as damaged.
Powerup: They look like the typical Gradius powerup, glowing orb within a
transparent shell.
-=-=-=Takosuke=-=-=-
Game Examples: Parodius Da!
Comments: An Octopus with a headband, Takosuke is pretty stylish. He's an
original character for Parodius Da! and is your choice if you want
a character who can attack a very wide area at once.
Missile: Two way missiles. They fire up and down, but don't travel across
surfaces. They're pretty useful.
Double: Shoots one bullet back, one bullet forward.
Laser: Ripple Laser, a laser of considerable width. If you want to wipe out
many enemies very quickly, this is the laser for you.
Options: They're the same as the Vic Viper, except shaped like little Octopi.
Shield: Like Vic's shield, a capsule wraps around his lips. You can tell when
it is being damaged by the cracks in it.
Powerup: Same as Vic except shaped like a Jellyfish.
-=-=-=TwinBee=-=-=-
Game Examples: Stinger, TwinBee
Comments: The star of the TwinBee series and the guy who took bells to the
Parodius plate, TwinBee plays more differently than the others. He's
a cool guy to use if you want a change of pace.
Missile: Rocket fists. They fire across the screen and then come back. They
can pierce
Double: Shoots one bullet forward, and one bacwards.
Laser: Not actually a laser but a three-way fire. Three bullets spread out
one forward, two diagonals.
Options: Transparent TwinBee's follow you around. They come straight to you
when you stop. So while that could easily bolster
Shield: A force field. Radial protection but it is big and takes less hits
than the frontal shields. Shrinks as damaged.
Powerup: Little ringed planets?
-=-=-=Pentarou=-=-=-
Game Examples: Antarctic Adventure
Comments: Pentarou plays much like as his own as well. Though he is inaccurate
and partly suffers from his options, Penatrou has the right moves to
really cause some damage along with the best shield in the game.
Missile: Missiles with feet, if they hit the ground they will run across it
until they either hit an enemy or expire. Unlike Vic Viper's missiles
these will continue to move even after they've hit an enemy.
Double: Shoots one bullet forward, and one up at an angle.
Laser: Exploding ice shards? Well, they are small but pack a wallop. They
will cause a burst that can catch other enemies. They really mess
with bells, however, causing them to change a few times/hit.
Options: Penguin options that behave like TwinBee's.
Shield: Bubble. Radial protection like Twin Bee's shield, shrinks with
damage. Starts out smaller than Twin Bee's.
Powerup: Candies!
**So who do you choose? Whomever you want, everyone's very capable of winning.
Powerups: These will put one notch on your powerup meter if they are red.
However, getting a few in quick succession or even just once in a while will
prompt the Roulette to begin. Blue powerups clear the screen of enemies.
Bells: Shoot bells to change their colour. Collect them for various effects.
--Yellow: 500 points, but +500 for every yellow bell extra you get in that
stage (500, 1000, etc).
--Blue: Same as a blue powerup.
--White: One up.
--Red: Laser wall. Fire an object that produces a laser blade at the top and
bottom, causing enemies damage. You will get three, but can only have
one on the screen at once.
--Flash: Grow huge. You can damage enemies when you're big, and they cannot
harm you. You temporarily loose your missiles and gun, however, and
cannot activate powerups. Everything is restored when you shrink
again.
Unfortunately, Bell Powers are activated by the fire button, so they cannot be
stored.
-Speed Up: Increase the speed of yoru player.
-Missile: Activate the missile ability of your character.
-Double: Activate the double ability of your character.
-Laser: Activate the laser ability of your character.
-Option: Activate the option ability of your character (up to four)
-?!: Take away all powerups.
-Shield: Activate the shield ability of your character.
**Laser and Double can _not_ be used at the same time.
Everytime you get a red powerup, the meter increases a bit. Press A when the
powerup you want is highlighted and it will activate. If it is allowed to
scroll past shield you'll be back at Speed-Up.
-Roulette: The roulette makes the powerup meter cycle through very quickly.
Press A when you are over an ability you need and try and get it. This is why
?! is in the powerup meter to begin with, to mess you up if you get Roulette.
-Options are very important in these games. I recommend getting at least two
before a shield. Shields are useful but sustain damage you probably wouldn't
have anyways.
-Unlike some of the Gradius games, you cannot wait out these bosses. You'll
have to attack them. Well, that's not entirely true, bosses that leave the
screen can only be beaten that way, but bosses that you actually fight will
not destroy after time.
-The two player mode is just alternating two player.
-Manual Powerup is the way to go, Automatic powerup chooses the powerups for
you and offers much less freedom.
-The difficulty settings, Easy Normal and Hard are available as well. The main
difference is enemy rate of fire.
Alright, so you're out in space. If you're familiar with Gradius you know what
will be coming. This is basically a prelevel powerup session. I recommend doing
the following to start: Speed up twice, then get missiles. After this I'd
recommend going for the double or laser - whichever you prefer for your chosen
character, then getting at least two options before going for a shield of any
kind. In other words, I'd recommend Manual powerup.
Right, so there's going to be a string of small Moai-ish enemies flying towards
you. Destroy all of them to get a Power Up. If you are too slow to get in front
of these, they move on a diagonal backwards after reaching the end of the
screen. Moai strings on top will travel down and those on the bottom will go up
so position yourself accordingly. Eventually, some syringes will arrive. These
will follow you slightly, they could muck up your getting a powerup but at this
stage they aren't too bad. Red syringes are one fact that you'll recognise from
Gradius - they too give powerups. Eventually one of the Moai strings will give
a bell - this is from Twin Bee. Keep shooting the bell to change its colour and
take the one you want.
The level will start soon, some nice brown hills, green grass, a blue sky and
clouds (some look like storm clouds and are scary). You'll notice some crabs,
the red ones give items. Mainly watch out for the chicks at the start of the
area, they fly quickly forward.
Keep on gunning and you'll notice some penguins coming from behind. These are
just like a walker enemy in Gradius. They run forwardm stop, and fire a shot
at you. These penguins can also walk on the ceiling. the red ones give items.
After more penguins and crabs you'll notice some Orcas jumping out of the
water. Destroying all of the Orcas in a line (like the Moai lines) will net you
a powerup. They aren't too threatening. Soon after you'll come to an area with
a Pirate Ship close by in the background. The treasure chests launch bees. You
should concentrate your fire on the bees and let your missiles hit the chest.
If you don't have missiles, take out the treasure chest first.
Shortly afterwards, you will see small Moai dressed as pirates hopping across
the ground. They shouldn't cause you any trouble. You'll also see some penguin
cannons positioned in a pathway. Take these out and keep going. There will be
a chest on the floor and one on the ceiling. Take out everything on the floor
for sure, and if you can't handle the top just avoid the shots.
*********
Boss 1
*********
A cat pirate ship. Heh, it is pretty cool. You shoot it in the face and it
meows! It has considerably easy patterns. It bobs around slightly but is overly
not too motile, and it fires shots from the small cannons visible around the
hull. The penguins that jump off to their doom don't really do much, but the
red guys will give you powerups. Keep firing at the cat's head until the hole
ship becomes charred. You can keep firing at it to destroy the boss, and you
may also destroy the parascope. If you are having trouble hitting the charred
form, try the ears.
Beyond the Kitty Ship is two pods of Orcas. If one leaves a bell, a glowing
bell could be useful...
*********
Boss 2
*********
A large pink pirate Penguin. This is a glimpse of Parodius' greatness for sure!
The penguin will create a shield of little green pirate penguins, which rotate
around the big guy. They shoot at you, avoid this. The shield will also begin
to give away and the penguins fly forward. Now, notice that the big guy has a
particularly prominent belly button. Attack this, pushing it in at damaging him
until he falls into the sea.If you got the glowing bell, just guide your player
into the Belly Button again and again.
You're back in a powerup prelevel. Now is your chance to get a decent array of
options and some kind of shield. There's a new enemy here - fish that move in
a sinusoid. There will be two lines of them that crisscross each other. Taking
them all out will net you an item of some kind.
When you arrive in the stage, you'll be assailed by chicks and crabs. You'll
notice the starfield background hasn't changed, and the decor otherwise will
suggest a circus. Indeed, to the right are some giant clows. They are muscle
bound clowns at that. They open their mouths and fire bubbles at you. Shoot
them in the glowing part on top of their heads.
This entire part of the stage is like the mini-sun area of Gradius 2. You can
scroll it vertically and it will also wrap vertically. There are these presents
which function as treasure chests did, with the same bees. Take em' out, or you
will be the main ingredient in a pain sandwich. There's also chicks and some
larger bird enemies that fly forward. Take these out because when they reach
the edge, they'll fire off some shots. The clowns aren't your main enemy to
worry about here, everything else is. There are plenty of rooster chicks and
red penguin cannons here, so don't fret too much if you die.
When you start seeing syringes again, the vertical scroll is gone.
*********
Boss 3
*********
Infamous. This would be a showgirl in other Parodius titles. Not sure why they
dressed her up for this game, maybe they just couldn't make her as flashy as
they wanted to. It is based on the Spider Walkers from the gradius series. Now
during the fight, Penguin Walkers will arrive, and the girl will have her arms
and legs pressed against the ceiling and floor. She moves by putting her arm
forward and also her leg, and then the other arm and leg. You probably can't
get at herfrom the front right now, so what you have to do is wait for her to
lift her leg closes to you, and get in between them. When she lifts her other
leg, fly our behind her. She will move back and forth across the stage multiple
times before leaving out the left. Stick with going under the legs because of
the more space. She's pretty cool, and appears in other Parodius titles as well
with the music from Gradius 2's Spider Walker battle.
Another Gradius theme will start playing, there are two rooster chicks with two
chicks each on their way. One will probably give you a bell.
*********
Boss 4
*********
Uncle Sam Eagle. It's an Eagle with a top hat and bow tie. This boss is quite
fast so I hope you have a few speed ups. He will fly up close to you and launch
a spread fo three feathers. He can also fire a laser similar to Gradius' Ripple
laser. Shoot it in the beak, to damage it. If you have options, it is best to
lead them up while firing on him, rather than staying right in front of him as
his attacks come from his mouth anyways. Eventually, you'll blow off all of its
feathers and it will fall to its doom. This guy's not too hard except he can
attack and move fast, so just keep moving and you should do okay.
Right, after a short powerup session, you'll come to a ferris wheel. The ferris
wheel cars will fire more or less up, destroy them. The stage music begins, so
get ready for a day at the carnival! Fly between the ferris wheels, flying into
them will destroy you. Cars on the top wheel will fire down.
Moving past the wheels, there's going to be some penguin cannons. afterwards
some merry-go-rounds which are liek the treasure chests, except they launch
buggy eyed ponies which are like the bees. For a stretch, there will be little
activity at teh top of the screen, but a lot on the floor. There should be
many opportunites to powerup.
After the clocktower in the background, the stage gets a ceiling. You'll come
to a place with some diving girls on top of faucets. The fire hearts from the
bottom of the faucets and dive off. You can kill them when they are diving.
Afetrwards you'll coem to a roller coaster, don't fly into it. Penguin cannon
attack from above and there are some penguins in a roller coaster. Missiles are
your best bet.
When you begin to go down, another coaster will be coming from behind. You'll
fight some more and then come to a big loop for the coasters. Don't run into
it. You'll leave teh park, fight some round birds, and be taken back out into
space.
*********
Encounter
*********
Moai Sea Dragon Ship! Totally awesome. The ship will move up and down, left and
right. There are huge spikes on the bottom of it - I suggest you stay between
the two Moai. Syringes will be coming after you, missiles and options are musts
here. Just wait it out and it will leave. The Moai, by teh way, are really cool
because they are making peace signs with their hands and have earrings.
You'll be allowed to get some powerups and then...
*********
Boss 5
*********
A Robo Penguin with glasses (or goggles). You wouldn't shoot a guy with glasses
would you? Well it's not time to be nice. You'll notice he has something in his
hand - a remote control. This lets him control little planes and boats which
fire at you. Shoot him in the remote. When you destroy it he will sink. He's
pretty easy, but hey he's neat.
A short powerup session and you'll come to a castle which has an ice cream cone
hanging off it. The session does continue as you pass the castle, however. As
you fly past the wall of the castle, the music will begin to change. The stage
is beginning.
When it does begin, there's ice cream and bananas on the wall. There will also
be torches that fire coins at you. There's some vertical scrolling in this
level - you are going to be making your way through tight tunnels with torches
and penguin cannons. This part is hard and there is little I can tell you to
help you survive, take out all of the cannons you can, and the torches
especially. Take special care when dealing with the coins because they can
_bounce_ _off_ _the walls_.
Okay, so when you come to a door that has three red penguin cannons, you get a
little more space. Well, find your way to another Penguin Cannon door and enter
another Gradius area.
Do you see all of those pretty coloured balls? Well, that's a destroyable wall
that you must blast through. The amoeboids in here won't be too much of a
danger. Kill the red ones for powerups. I guess these are candy balls because
eventually some bipedal pumpkins will come and start eating the walls. They go
hoizontally a short distance and then might chomp a path down to come after
you. You have little choice but to destroy them. when they're in front of you.
After a couple of them coming fromt he right, four will come from the left. If
one if right behind you, you're in some serious danger but the wall is ending
soon so move forward as much as you can and try to escape. Overall, while in
the wall try to stay around the middle of the screen, and give yourself some
space: make your tunnel maybe 2-3 gumballs wide?
Now you're back in an icecream castle. Find a tunnel that doesn't have a column
in your way and take out the penguin cannons. Follow the screen and take out
the gumball walls along the way. If you can't go up, try to go down. The screen
is vertically wrapping and scrolling. After leaving the castle, the music will
begin to change.
*********
Boss 6
*********
Eight disembodied lips. I suppose this is a Parodius equivalent of a Gradius
fortified wall. Four will move across the stage at the start so watch out for
them. They will position themselves four on one side, and four on the other.
Then, they will begin launching homing dentures - deadly fangs that seek out
your character. Destroy these teeth. For the teeth that come from behind, you
may have to lead them far to the right then duck behind them. Keep firing at
the mouths on the right, however, and they will eventually start being
destroyed. When all four are gone, the left mouths move over to take their
place. However, they're licking their lips for a reason, they have a tasty plan
on the stove! These lips will move back and forth, releasing teeth when they
stop. Okay, so the teeth released on the left, wait until they're a player's
distance away from the wall and take them all out from behind. Keep firing on
the mouths, and you'll win.
That's it! You were expecting another boss? Sorry bub.
The powerup session begins with some Moai Flies. These are winged Moais with a
sinusoidal flight apttern that covers a large vertical area. They shoot you
after they are destroyed, and the red ones give powerups.
-Let me just say that I _love_ this area! It is a Moai based stage with a
large variety of Moai.
You'll approach a large ship which is kind of like the R-Type caste in that you
fly over it, destroying various portions until it leaves or is destroyed. The
front is a huge Moai with sunglasses that launches a large spread shot from its
mouth. Shoot it in the mouth to break the teeth and the shades, but then attack
its nose to defeat it.
The first enemy you'll note as you fly over the ship is a Moai turret. These
spinning Moai heads shoot at you. There are also grey domes taht open up to
launch Moai lines, and Moai Heads with shades that behave more like normal Moai
and shoot bubble donuts at you.
But before you go very far past the first shades Moai you'll notice a Moai with
a pipe and three eyes, and a satellite cap. The pipe lobs shots at you which
travel in an arc. The eyes can fire lasers. Destroy the pipe, hat, and eyes to
defeat him. You will now move backwards to the front of the ship, and begin
going under it.
The domes are very close to the top of the ship, and may be hard to hit if you
don't have the right gear. Fly up to them and blast em. In fact, the ship will
be moving down, and you will be trapped between the bottom of the stage and the
spaceship. It begins to scroll right, but soon dips down. Hey, Mr Three eyes
got his hat back, you can see him on top of the ship at this point.
Fly past the shades Moai and you'll have passed the ship.
*********
Boss 7
*********
A lady Moai with full lips and big hooped earrings will be coming from the left
side of the screen. When she gets to the other side, she will barf a horizontal
stream of hearts at you. Shoot her in the eye while avoiding this attack.
As you attack her eye, she will show damage by changing her colour over time.
When she turns red, the hearts will start moving up or down as well. There's
not much difference when she turns pink. When she turns dark red, she's almosy
gone. A pretty easy Boss overall.
Well, here you are again in the powerup prelevel. It's mainly just fish and
chicks (but not chips). Well, the chicks are aggressive now, or at least it is
obvious they are, they'll be firing at you. The Moai Lines will be firing too.
Heck, when you blow an enemy up, a bullet will come flying at you (except the
Moai lines).
You're going to come to a an area with huge crystals jutting out towards you.
These are background. You'll eventually come to an Ice Cave. Do you see that
large penguin that looks liek it is part of the background? It isn't, it is a
large ice sculpture, and if you run into it you will die. Fly over it and into
the cave, and right away things get hairy as penguin cannons fire at you from
the floor and ceiling.
You'll come to a dip that scrolls you down below some water. Penguins in inner
tubes float along the water's surface, firing shots at you. Underwater is kind
of frantic, penguin cannons line the ceiling and floor, fish (solitary) swim
around, and Anenomes launch Jellyfish.
Shortly, you enter a school of fish that flash white at times. These glow fish
just swim straight forward and shoot at you. You will encounter many of them on
the screen, and if you can get a blue powerup, it would be very useful. After
this, there's a few anenome.
Following the aneneome are some penguin cannons. They only become a problem
when the stage begins to scroll up. Dodge their shots and get into the
horizontal tunnel ASAP. Destroy the cannons on the floor, and keep an eye on
any you may have left on the wall behind you. The stage begins to scroll down
and there'll be chicks and cannons. You go underwater again, watch out for
shots coming from below.
*********
Boss 8
*********
A green puffer fish. He shoots quills at you, dodge them and shoot its open
mouth. As you shoot, the puffer grows bigger and so do his spikes. Shoot it in
the face and it'll keep getting bigger and bigger. Before it grows big, you can
stay on the left and never get hit. At first, you'll probably have to make
strafing runs across the front of it. Later, you'll basically be forced to stay
in front of it dodging needles. No real tricks here, just dodge and shoot.
Alright, the enemies aren't shooting at you as much as before eh? Well on
Normal at least they won't be. This is a relatively fruitful prelevel where you
can get some tasty powerups.
When you approach the stage, it looks something like a Gradius Mechanical Base.
It starts out innocently enough with some chicks and penguin cannons, but soon
takes on a more sinister nature when those little enemies that look like they
are made from five balls start phasing in. Take out the phasers as they appear
because they will fly at you. There are also Octopus Cannons, which fire at you
from their mouths.
Well, more phasers will be coming from the right, and Penguin Walkers from the
left. There will also be some new green penguins coming from the right. These
guys bounce and spin across either the floor or ceiling, releasing a burst of
shots. These penguins are similar to another Gradius enemy that acts in a
similar way.
Past the burst penguins, there will be a narrow tunnel lined with penguin
cannons. There will be some Penguins that launch bees shortly after this. Again
these aren't very much different from the treasure chests, but they are often
set into little nooks. So some on the ceiling could be hard to hit for some
characters.
*********
Encounter
*********
Penguin shower. there are four faucets which drip a bit then form a stream. I
find staying on the outside at near the screen's edge or inside near the far
left valve to be easiest, but this is difficult regardless. Penguin walkers
will be coming onscreen and burst penguins from the right. Options are very,
very useful here. Even stand right between the two right streams and move up
and down to avoid the shots. This is your call, because it will depend on your
playing style and aptitude to get out of this.
Afterwords, keep on flying. There will be these octopi with whip-tentacles
coming out of them. They shoot little octopi at you. You _can_ destroy these
but worry more about getting through the door that they are guarding.
*********
Boss 9
*********
Ahhh, typical Gradius fashion. The boss is super, super easy. Like the Gradius
'brains' found at the end of those titles, this is a large stationary target.
But instead of a brain, this is a gigantic Octopus straddling the floor and
ceiling It has it's tentacles wrapped around bars, destroy every tentacle, the
octopus will be destroyed and you win the game!
Watch the ending, the credits, and then the game will loop. Congratulations,
you just beat Parodius.
Note about the enemy list:
-Names aren't official.
-They may appear in other stages, the listing deals with first appearances. If
an enemy reappearance was significant, I'd have emntioned it in the
walkthrough.
*********
Stage 1:
*********
Bees: Fly up and then fly forward.
Chick: Flies quickly forward with some vertical movement. Often come in packs.
Roosters will give you items. They fire at you in later levels.
Crab: Scuttles across either the ceiling or floor. They can fire shots at you.
Moai String/Line: Destroy them all for a powerup. When the reach the edge of
the screen, they will head diagonally backwards. Shoot mini bubbles later on/
at harder difficulties.
Orcas: Dive in lines in and out of the water. Destroy them all for a powerup.
Pirate Moai: Jumps across the ground.
Penguin Cannon: Stationary enemy that fires shots at you.
Penguin Walker: Just like Gradius walkers, they arrive onscreen, and walk over
either the ground or the ceiling. Theys top to fire a shot at you.
Shield Penguins: Act as a shield but will fly towards you eventually. Can shoot
at you.
Ship Penguins: They really just jump into the water. You'll kill them just by
attacking the boss.
Syringe: Follows you slightly around the screen, but has a general momentum
that denies it from straying too far off path.
Treasure Chest: Launches bees periodically.
*********
Stage 2
*********
Clown: Fires bubbles from its mouth. Hit the glowing dome on top of their
heads.
Fish: Enemies that crisscross each other.

will eventually take a dive, you can defeat them when they do this, but if you
do not they just go underwater.

the ferris wheel.
Merry-Go-Round: Like the chests but launch ponies.

destroy it.
Moai Turret: Similar to Penguin cannons.
Shades Moai: A classic Moai head that launches bubbles at you. Shoot it in the
mouth.
Three-Eye Moai: Dangerous foe, its pipe lobs an a shot in an arc towards you
and he can shoot lasers from his eyes. Destroy the hat, pipe, and eyes.
*********
Stage 6
*********
Anenome: Launches Jellyfish
Fish (Solitary): Looks different than the powerup fish. Swims forward.
Glow Fish: Fish that sometimes flash. They swim straight forward and launch
shits at you.
Inner-tube Penguin: Float across the surface of the water and fire shots.
Jellyfish: Act like bees, are usually dispersed more widely/randomly.
*********
Stage 7
*********
Burst Penguin: Bounce across the floor or ceiling, releasing radial bursts of
shots.
Octopus Cannon: Aims lips at player and shoots.
Penguin Launchers: Act like treasure chests and release bees.
Phasers: Phase in and chase the player.
Whip Octopus: A long tentacle reaches out at the player. The octopus will shoot
mini octopi at the player.
Thanks go out to the hosts, they let you read this, and Konami, the provided
they game. And mucho thanks to all the games and sources Konami parodied and
