Introduction                                                         [INTRO]
===============================================================================
While some of you might jump to the inaccurate conclusion that I'm writing this
game in anticipation of the upcoming 10th anniversary of the September 11
attacks, I'm really writing this for a much less patriotic-sounding reason: I
haven't written an FAQ in over a year (gasp!) and I'm feeling nostaglic about
guide-writing. For that reason, I looked at the list of Game Boy games without
guides and randomly picked a title that sounded like the kind of game I could
write a guide for in a relatively short time. Yeah, I'm that kind of person.
While I haven't quit FAQ-writing entirely, I've been distracted by my fangame
and indie projects, and besides recently volunteering to compose the music for
a dating simulator (!), I'm probably going to be busier with school stuff now,
so FAQs from here on will likely be few and far between.

And now for the review I usually include in my FAQs. Navy SEALs is a Game Boy
game based on a 1990 movie of the same name. This movie apparently wasn't
critically-acclaimed by any stretch of the imagination, but then again I don't
know what else you would expect when Charlie Sheen is the Navy's second-in-
command - a truly horrific thought. The video game itself isn't spectacular
either, and while this isn't the kind of game I would ordinarily play, I'll
admit it also isn't as awful as you might expect. You control a lone-wolf Navy
SEAL assigned to various tasks relating to stopping an unnamed group of
terrorists from acquiring a bunch of smuggled Stinger missiles. Even though the
game was released in the olden era of 1991, the story remains fairly relevant
to this day. However, the less intense parts of the movie (like the bachelor
party, according by Wikipedia's plot summary) are cut out, leaving nothing but
high-testosterone action. And that's pretty much all the movie was anyway,
which despite being loaded with muscle-clad superhero types, was directed by
Brenda Feigen, who is most frequently known by the incongruent label of
"radical feminist." Back on topic, gameplay consists of standard 2-D shooter
fare. You grab a gun and shoot everybody - and that's about it. All the enemies
are turban-wearing thugs armed with knives, so you probably won't feel too much
compunction about taking them out, especially when there's always another
identical goon waiting to charge out the door and attack you. One hit from an
enemy will make you lose a life, and while you always restart from the point
where you were hit, this can be a pretty challenging game the first time you
play, especially with no adjustable difficulty levels. For that same reason,
replay value isn't terribly high. Graphics are quite sharp by Game Boy
standards, and nothing seems blurry or indistinct enough to interfere with
gameplay. The still-motion shots are pretty nice too. The game's theme song is
outstanding, and the other music is also pretty good, although the sound
effects didn't do too much for me. Overall, this isn't a game that redefines
the genre or offers a great deal of subtlety, but if you want an hour or two of
green-tinged mindless violence, you could give it a try.

Controls and Basics                                                  [BASIC]
===============================================================================
Left, Right  -    Move your character.
A            -    Jump.
B            -    Shoot gun.
Down         -    Duck. You can still walk and shoot while in the crouching
                 stance, but you can't jump.
Up + A       -    Jump to an overhead platform (if applicable).
Down + A     -    Jump down to a lower level (if applicable).
START        -    Pause play.
SELECT       -    Sniper shot. If you have at least one lightning icon, this
takes out all the enemies on the screen.

When you begin the game, choose "Play Normal Game" to begin play, unless you
want to practice levels 2, 3, or 4 (or 5 if you've already beaten the game).

===============================================================================
Power-Ups                                                            [POWER]
===============================================================================
[!]          -    Exclamation-mark boxes restor your regular gun's ammunition
to 90. This isn't very useful, since you'll rarely run out of
                 bullets for your standard-issue firearm.
[!!]         -    This gives you 30 shots for your better gun. Extremely
useful, since this weapon defeats enemies in a single shot.
[Lightning]  -    This adds one sniper shot to your meter.
[Clock]      -    Adds more time to the clock.
[250]        -    Increases your score by 250.
[500]        -    Worth 500 points.
[Sunglasses] -    An extra life. Don't miss these!

===============================================================================
Enemies and Obstacles                                                [ENEMY]
===============================================================================
There's not a huge variety of enemies in this game.

====== Human Enemies ======

--- Knife Guy ---
Found: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
These turban-clad enemies wield knives and can't be touched. Like all other
enemies in this game, two shots (or one if you have the powered-up gun) will
eliminate them. These enemies typically move back and forth as they patrol
along platforms, although some will climb up to a ledge directly above them, or
descend to a lower platform, so stay on your toes.

--- Fast Knife Guy ---
Found: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
These insurgents have apparently been putting in their dues at the gym and move
at a pretty swift speed. Worse yet, they can jump across ledges and pursue you
relentlessly. These are the most dangerous enemies in the game, so take them
out the instant they come into view, or you'll probably be sorry. Don't try to
outrun them, either, because they'll probably take you out if you run into
another enemy blocking your escape.

--- Crouching Knife Guy ---
Found: 2, 3, 4, 5
Relatively rare enemies, this guy isn't much different from the standard-grade
terrorists, but he's always in a crouched position. Don't try to jump over him,
however, because he's not a Goomba and can't be stomped.

--- Shield Guy ---
Found: 3, 4, 5
These meanies carry twin knives and walk while in a crouched, defensive
position. Because of that, they resist any bullets shot directly at them, even
if you're using the upgraded gun. You can still defeat them if you shoot them
from the back, but that's often tricky to do, so it's generally better just to
jump over them, or if you absolutely must, use the SELECT-button sniper attack.

--- Gunman ---
Found: 4, 5
Some enemies in the last two levels pull out guns and shoot at you. If they're
on the same level as you, you can press Down to duck the bullets, but whenever
possible you should just shoot them before they get an opportunity to shoot at
you.

--- Crouching Gunman ---
Found: 4, 5
Same as regular gunman, except these guys duck while walking.

====== Traps and Obstacles ======

--- Broken Bridges ---
Found: 1, 5
Some sections of bridges collapse under your weight, so use caution while
crossing any bridges. It's safest to cross them as quickly as possible,
especially for bridges over water or dangerous territory.

--- Falling Traps ---
Found: 2, 4, 5
These things are concealed in the ceilings and serve exactly the same purpose
as Thwomps from the Mario series - they fall when you come near. Approach them
to trigger them, and then you can pass by safely. Don't try to run under them
as they're falling - you usually won't be fast enough to make it past them. Be
very careful dealing with the later traps, because some blend in with the
ceilings of certain areas, and in Level 2 some are even located above the
camera view - which is a nasty level design flaw. The only good thing is that
these obstacles can take out enemies as well as you, and that they remain
triggered even when you return to them after leaving the room.

--- Spikes ---
Found: 2, 5
I shouldn't even have to tell you that you can't touch these.

--- Water ---
Found: 1, 4
Sorry, but your SEAL didn't show up for class when they were teaching swimming
lessons, and touching a pool of water means you'll have one fewer lives than
you did before you took a bath.

General Strategies                                                   [STRAT]
===============================================================================
The level's time limit is indicated by the fuse on the bottom-left corner of
the screen, but you're unlikely to run out of time in this game, especially if
you nab the occasional time power-up.

Stay alert at all times. This isn't like a standard platform game or even a lot
of shooters, where you can mow down the enemies and they're gone for good. In
contrast, enemies can appear from behind you, above you, or even below you.
Another reason you have to be aware of your surroundings at all times is
because obstacles like shaky bridges and those falling things are everywhere.

Keep your distance from all doors that you're not able to entered (any door
that doesn't have an arrow marked above it). Terrorists usually come pouring
out of those entrances, not unlike a Mario 3 Goomba generating pipe. Depending
on the level, these doors may introduce the slow guards, the faster terrorists,
or even gunners.

Your regular gun has enough ammunition that you're unlikely to ever run out.
Your powered-up gun is another story. Don't waste bullets when you have it,
especially since its double power is such a great asset when a lot of enemies
are nearby. Also, keep an eye on your upgraded gun's ammunition, and be ready
to switch back to double shots when you're about to run out.

Use your sniper shot attack with caution. It's invaluable when you're
surrounded by militants on all sides, but don't waste these shots on situations
where you can survive with normal attacks. Also keep in mind that while your
ordinary gun won't work while you're in midair, you can use the sniper attack
while jumping or falling.

While extra lives and gun upgrades are lifesavers, don't feel compelled to go
out of your way for point boosters if doing so will put you in unreasonable
danger.

Avoid falling too far off a ledge. If you fall far enough, you'll lose a life.
This is rarely a problem in the earlier levels, however.

===============================================================================
Level Strategies                                                     [LEVEL]
===============================================================================
--- Level 1: The Seaport ---
The game's first level is really straightforward. Most of the enemies are of
the simplest variety, although you'll find a falling bridge piece and a running
man fairly early in the level. There are a few crates that can make life a
little more complex at the end, but basically this is a very simple stage. Keep
going right and things will turn out OK. At the end, go through the door marked
with the flashing arrow to proceed to the cinema scene and the next level.
Somehow I suspect Osama wouldn't have lasted as long as he did if his bases
were marked like that...

--- Level 2: Rescue the Helicopter Hostages ---
The difficulty ups drastically in this level. You'll see a lot more of the
faster, more aggressive terrorists, and even the slow ones are much trickier
now, since they'll often jump down from a higher platform - or climb up to your
level - to attack you. Worse, the falling anvil traps are everywhere, so you
have to watch the ceiling at all times. Some of these traps will fall on you as
soon as you jump up to the platforms they're guarding, so be extra careful.
Some of the terrorists will be trying to assault you from behind, so remember
to watch your back as well! Be careful near the beginning of the level - there
are a couple of places where it looks like you can jump down safely, but these
are really beds of spikes hidden below. The worst thing you'll find is that the
level is much more complicated now, as there are branching paths. At the right
edge of the first room, the lower door takes you to a bunch of power-ups, while
the upper-right door eventually leads you to the exit. This room, however, can
get pretty harried, so don't be afraid to use your sniper move if necessary. In
the last room, drop down and right to reach a secret exit with two extra lives,
but watch out for the spikes.

--- Level 3: The Ship ---
There are lots of power-ups on top of the ship near the beginning, including a
gun upgrade that helps a lot getting through the mob of meanies. The running
enemies become more aggressive here and will frequently jump across platforms
in pursuit of you. Later on you'll meet a new enemy - a crouching enemy wit
two knifes he uses as a shield. This enemy can only be shot from the back (or
snipered), so leave him alone. Thankfully, the ship isn't much more complicated
than the previous level.

--- Level 4: Find the Informant ---
Where's Jack Bauer when you need him? You get swarmed with enemies the instant
the level begins, so brace yourself. And not only has the enemy count increased
exponentially, those falling traps are back too. The turban-clad militants have
also finally joined the 20th century and acquired guns, so some of them will
shoot at you instead of just trying to stab you in the back with a dagger. The
shielded crouching guys are a bigger problem as well. Near the end of the
level, some of the doors are hidden, but you can still spot them without
difficulty because of the convenient flashing arrows above them.

---Level 5: Beirut City Slums ---
The final level of the game has you tracking down the terrorists' base. This
level has a mixture of just about all the enemies and obstacles you've fought
in the previous levels. However, the falling things now blend into the bricks,
and trap bridges are back too. Also worth preparing for: Some enemies fade into
the background, making them harder to see at first and thus causing them to be
much more dangerous. Keep following previous strategies, though, and you'll be
at the exit before you know it. There's no boss or anything like that to add
any variety to this game, so enjoy the simple ending and salute the seven
people who made Navy SEALs a reality!
