                             Mouse Trap Hotel FAQ

This is my first FAQ for Gamefaqs and it is about the game Mouse Trap Hotel for
the Nintendo Game Boy. In this guide, I will try to provide a detailed step to
step guide in overcoming all the obstacles in the game. As such, spoilers are
expected.

------------------------------------Game Controls-----------------------------1

Ok here are the basic controls of this game. For those who are new, and are too
lazy to read the manual (or who lost it) here are the controls.

A: Jump
B: Swing tail- This is your primary attack and can be upgraded for longer reach
by obtaining cookies. You can only attack when you are standing on the ground.
As a note, some enemies cannot be defeated by the tail attack.

Left on D pad: Walk left/ Climb left
Right on D pad: Walk right/ Climb right
Down on D pad: Crouch/ Climb down
Up on D pad: Climb up/ enter door

Start: Pause and starts the game at the start title screen.
Select: Open map. The map shows approximately where you are in the level. There
is also an option to turn the sound on or off. In my opinion I don?t use the
sound feature and just adjust the volume on my Game Boy if I want no sound.

-------------------------------------Items------------------------------------2

Cheese: Gives an extra life. Also gives you 500 points when you grab them. They
are found mostly in mousetraps and occasionally on stoves. The ones on stoves
give 1500 points instead of 500.

Cookie: Lengthens Maxie?s tail, giving it more reach and thus makes it a better
weapon. After obtaining two cookies, the tail?s length is maxed out. Cookies
also prevent you from dying (in most situations) if you get hit. If you get
hit, you lose one cookie. Dying instantly will cause you to lose a life and two
cookies. They give you 1000 points when you touch them.

These two items are the most common and the most abundant items in the game.
There are other items, but they appear in the elevator (bonus stage) and just
function in giving you more points. In my opinion, cookies are more importat
than cheese as cookies allow you to take a hit and still continue without
dying.

------------------------------------Basement Floor----------------------------3

The basement is the first level that you start at. At first, you pop out of a
hole in the wall and drop to the ground. At this point, small soap bubbles will
appear to the left of the screen. Touching them will cause you to die just
because you have no cookies. At this point, your tail is very short, but it is
good enough to whack the bubbles. Hitting them will destroy them and will give
you 50 points.

Walk left, whacking any bubble that appears on the ground. You should see a
cookie in the air. Jump up and grab it when there are no bubbles. Just next to
the cookie is a mousetrap with a piece of cheese. If the mouse trap snaps on
you, it is instant death. Hit the mousetrap with your tail and it will snap,
causing you no harm. Grab the cheese on the useless mouse trap to obtain an
extra life.

Walk left again and you should see bubbles falling down vertically in addition
to the ones coming on the ground from the left. Next to the falling bubbles
should be a fence. When it is safe, jump and press up to grab onto the fence.

In the fence, there are a series of gaps. You cannot climb in the gaps just
because there is no fence to climb. Examine the pattern in the falling bubbles.
When there is a safe gap, climb up higher. As a note, you cannot attack when
you are climbing or in the air. Generally the area underneath a gap in the
fence is a safe spot so you can wait there while looking for a safe gap in the
bubbles.

After climbing all the way up, you should see a wooden looking platform with a
cookie in the air. Walk right and jump to grab the cookie. Take care not to
accidentally jump off the stage as you will die instantly if you fall into the
hole. At this point, you should have two cookies. If you have two cookies, your
tail is at its maximum length and so it is more effective at swatting enemies.

Walk left, while watching out for the bubbles until you reach a washing machine
looking object. The machine is too wide for you to clear in one jump so you
need to jump onto the middle thing sticking out of the water. Falling into the
soapy water means instant death. At this first machine, no bubbles should fly
out of it. Jump onto the middle platform and jump to the left side of the
machine. If you have a problem landing on the middle platform as you over jump,
hold the opposite direction in midair and you won?t over shoot the jump. Jump
across the hole and you should reach the next washing machine.

The second machine has bubbles flying out of the right side. Watch for a safe
gap and jump onto the middle platform. The middle platform rotates left and
right so beware as this may mess up your next jump. On the left side of the
washing machine, there is a piece of cheese. Grab it to gain an extra life.

On the next hole, there is a line of falling bubbles. When there is a safe gap,
jump across the hole and land on the next washing machine. The next washing
machine is trickier as bubbles appear from both sides of water. Like previous
obstacles, just wait for a safe gap and jump across and land on the middle
platform.

Jump across the hole and touch the cookie for an extra power up. If you still
have the other two cookies, this third cookie will be displayed at the top of
the screen. The cookies displayed at the top tells you how many extra cookies
you have. There is no limit to how many extra cookies you can possess and it is
possible to have more than the number it takes to fill the screen.

The next washing machine has bubbles appearing from its left and right waters.
Like before, watch for a safe gap and jump onto the middle platform. The middle
platform moves left and right so be aware as it may make you mess up your next
jump. When it is clear, jump to the left edge of the machine.

Now there should be a pipe leading downwards. Grab on the pipe and you will
slide downwards. Hold right and you will have no problem grabbing the cookie.
After you land, quickly walk to the right and pick up the cookie in the corner
as a large wave of bubbles will fall down.

Moving left, you will see various waves of bubbles falling downwards and some
coming down from the left. As you move further left, there is another cookie
and a mouse traps with a piece of cheese. Jump to grab the cookie and hit the
mousetrap with you tail to disarm it.

As you walk further left, there is another cookie in the air that is floating
on a pipe. At this point, you cannot reach this cookie. You can obtain this
cookie later in the level.

Continue walking left and you should encounter a few waves of falling bubbles.
Whack them or wait for them to hit the ground and you should be able to pass
safely.

When you walk left, you should see another fence that is a lot narrower than
the one in the beginning of the level. Jump up and press up to grab on to it.
Like the other fence, the area underneath a hole is generally a safe spot so
you can wait there while a bubble falls. There is another cookie to the left of
the fence. Ease to the left slightly and make sure you grab the fence before
you fall down to an instant death.

Climb all the way to the top and you should see another wooden like platform.
After you leave the fence, you will appear standing on the platform, surrounded
by falling bubbles as usual.

Proceed to the right while avoiding the bubbles. At this point you should be a
veteran at avoiding bubbles. You should find another washing machine with
bubbles flying from both sides of its water. Wait for a safe gap and jump to
the middle platform. Wait for another safe gap and jump to the right edge of
the machine.

There is another hole so jump across it. Just watch out for the falling bubbles
that blocks the jump. Again this washing machine is the same as the previous
one. Just jump when there is a safe gap and you will be fine. After clearing
the machine, there is a piece of cheese to give you an extra life.

After grabbing the cheese, there is another hole with a falling bubble that
obstructs your path. Again, wait for a safe gap and jump to the next machine.
The next machine is the same as the ones before it so follow the strategies you
used to clear it.

This is the last washing machine of this area. Walk right and onto the wooden
platform. There are some bubbles that fall, but those shouldn?t be much of a
threat. Jump and grab the cookie. On the far right, there is a pipe. Jump onto
the pipe and press left. The mouse will move slightly on the left and guess
what, you will grab that cookie that was inaccessible earlier.

Proceed left and you will see falling bubbles again. Just walk and evade them
as they fall. Continue walking left and you should see that fence again. This
time it is completely blocked so you cannot go up it. Just continue walking
left.

At this point, there is a bubble that floats slightly off the ground. It can
only be defeated if your tail is maxed out as it floats midway up your body. If
you cannot hit it because your tail is too short, press down to duck and it
will pass over your head safely.

As you walk more to the left past the now blocked off fence, there is another
cookie suspended in mid air. You need to jump to grab the cookie. It may be
difficult as the cookie is in a falling bubble?s path and there is the
horizontal bubble too. To grab it jump and press back so you avoid the falling
bubble and give yourself enough time to dodge the horizontal bubble.

Move left again and there is another mousetrap with a piece of cheese on it.
Attack it and it will disengage so you can grab it and earn another life.

Congratulations, you are now half way through the level. As you walk past the
mousetrap, there is a border like wall with a small opening on the ground.
After you pass this point, you leave the laundry room and now enter the weight
room. The weight room has different enemies and level design than the laundry
room as it is a bit shorter. After you enter it, the music will also change.

When you enter the weight room there will be a pounding noise. This comes from
a platform that moves up and down. Getting crushed by the platform means
instant death so avoid getting crushed. Also a new enemy, the ant appears. It
moves faster than a bubble, but the good thing is that it gives 200 points of
you defeat it. It can also die from getting crushed by a moving platform.

To get past the moving platform, I suggest you should jump on it. Going under
it is possible, but it is more difficult and is an unnecessary risk. By going
under it, you can get crushed or get hit, so it is better to jump on it. Wait
until the platform touches the ground and press A to jump on it.

After you jump on the first moving platform, there is another one to your left.
This one also moves up and down, but it does not hit the ground. It can also
instant kill you, but it cannot destroy the ants, as they are too short. It is
also better to jump on it rather than to walk under it. The most successful way
to jump on it is to wait until it is at its lowest point.

As you walk left, the ants keep coming and you will see a triangular block
suspended in midair. Underneath it is a switch that looks like a fly. If you
touch the triangular block when it is in midair, you will die instantly. If you
walk over the fly switch, it will cause the weight to fall. Since the weight is
quite high in the air, you should have enough time to walk past it before it
falls on your head. So to get past this obstacle, you can jump over the switch
or just continue walking normally. Also the ants cannot activate the switch
when they walk over it. In later levels, ants can activate switches, but I
don?t know why they cannot activate this one.

If you want to grab the cookie in the air, you have to make the block fall as
your jump is not high enough to reach it. So activate the switch and let the
block fall to the ground. Once the block is on the ground, it is safe to touch
so jump on it and jump to grab the cookie.

Walk left again and the wave of ants shortly stop. When you reach the double
moving platform, the ants come again. This platform cannot destroy the ants as
it does not touch the ground, but it can still instant kill you. You may be
able to survive the crush by ducking, but this is not recommended. Anyways, you
should jump on top of it. Wait until the block is at its lowest point and then
jump.

To get onto the stationary platform in the air, you need to be on the moving
double platform first. Wait until the moving platform is at its highest point
and then jump to reach the stationary platform. When you reach this stationary
platform jump to the next one. Jump to the next one and you will grab a cookie.

If you reached the platform to the left of the cookie then great as you can
easily jump on top of the moving double platform. If you cannot, you need to
wait until it is at its highest point so you can jump and get past it. Same for
the moving single platform. However, this platform moves a lot faster. Start
jumping when it is at its lowest point and you should be able to get past it.
If you start your jump when it is at its highest point, you won?t make it.

Attack the mousetrap so you can grab the cheese for an extra life. Next to the
cheese is another double platform with no tricks. Wait until it is at its
lowest point and press left to keep walking.

Next there is a single platform. Jump on top of it when it is at its lowest
point. Also ants keep coming, but they are no threat when you are on the moving
platform.

To get on the next moving platform, you need to be on top of the first
platform. Wait until the second platform is at its lowest point and then jump.
You should have no problems getting on top of it.

Although there is no reward by going on top of these two platforms, it makes it
easier to dodge the wave of double ants. So the reward is a lower risk in
getting hit by ants.

Walk left a bit more and you should see a triangular weight over a switch. This
block is a lot lower than the one previously. You will not be able to walk and
have it miss. What you need to do is walk left and once you hit the switch, go
right so it misses you. After you do this, the block will fall to the ground
and once it is on the ground you can safely pass it.

As you proceed left, you will see another triangular weight that is even lower
than the one before it. There is a switch over it, but since the height of the
weight is so low, the previous strategy will not work. It is also too high in
the air for you to jump over it. Even if it is not moving, but in the air,
touching it means instant death. To get past it, move close to the switch. A
white ant will appear from the right. This white ant gives you 250 points if
you destroy it, but it has the ability to activate switches. Jump over it and
it will activate the switch for you so the triangular weight will fall. Once
the weight has fallen jump over it and proceed further on.

After the weight, there is a hole. The ants will stupid walk into the hole if
you do not destroy them. Jump over it like you would any hole and it shouldn?t
give you any problems. Jump over the second hole and it too shouldn?t give you
any problems.

Walk past the holes and you should see another switch with no weight over it.
To the left of the screen is a triangular weight over a hole. This weight
blocks the jump of the hole. To get rid of it, touch the switch and it will
fall into the hole, no longer obstructing you. Jump over the first hole and the
hole the triangular block was over.

Now there is a moving platform with a cookie over it. You must jump on top of
the platform if you want to clear the hole to the left of it. To get on it,
wait until it is at its lowest point and then jump. Jump while on the platform
to grab the cookie. When the platform is at its highest point jump left to
clear the hole.

After clearing this hole, there is another hole. This hole is quite wide, but
it is clearable if you jump from the edge of the raised ground. After clearing
this big hole, jump on top of the double platform when it is at its highest
point. To avoid being trapped by the mousetrap, jump to the left of it, but out
of the way of the single moving platform. Attack the mousetrap and claim the
cheese for another life.

Jump back onto the double moving platform as you need to get on top of the
single moving platform to get past the water hazard. Jump on the single moving
platform when it is at its lowest point to get on top of it.

When you are on top of the single moving platform, you need to get on the
stationary platform in the air. Remember, falling into the water means instant
death and the loss of 2 cookies. Jump when your platform is at its highest
point.

When you are on the stationary platform, you need to jump to the floating
quadruple platform. A bubble floating upwards blocks your path. Wait until the
bubble is gone and then jump on the edge of your platform.

When you are on the quadruple platform, you need to jump to the next single
stationary platform. The distance is longer than the last jump, but it is
doable as your platform is higher up. Jump when you are on the edge of your
platform. There are no bubbles blocking this jump. The same strategy applies
for the next jump.

The next jump is a bit tricky. Now there is a bubble blocking the way and the
destination platform is moving. Wait until the moving platform is at its lowest
point and jump when the bubble is not in the way. Jump when you are on the edge
of your platform. When you make this moving platform, your next jump is blocked
by two bubbles. Jump when they are out of the way and when your platform is at
its highest point.

The water hazard is over and now you should see a double moving platform. It is
not possible to jump on top of it when you are on the ground so go under it
when it is at its highest point.

On the next set of moving platforms, jump on top of the lower one. When it is
higher than the double moving platform, jump to the right and land on top of
it. When double moving platform is higher than the higher single platform, jump
on top of it. Jump to the left to grab the cookie.

You should see a cookie suspended high in the air and a quadruple platform.
Walk underneath it when it is at its lowest point and jump on top of the single
moving platform. When you are on the single moving platform, jump on top of the
quadruple moving platform. Jump right to grab the cookie.

You should land to the right of the quadruple platform. Walk left when it is at
its lowest point. Jump over the single platform. As you walk left you will see
the elevator. Congratulations, you have cleared the basement level. To activate
the elevator, walk to the left of the door where there is a B and a button.
Jump to ?press? the button and open the elevator.

I will discuss the other levels in further updates to the guide.

-----------------------------The Elevator (Bonus Stage)-----------------------4

The elevator is at the end of each level and is your means of transport to the
next level. When you reach it, you are presented with a stage select screen.
Stages marked with a cheese are ones that you have already completed. Stages
marked with a cheese outline are ones that you have not completed and are able
for selection. You cannot return to levels that you have already collected. The
fifth floor which is marked with a question mark is not accessible until you
beat the other levels (I need to check on that). The goal of the game, the
penthouse level, is obviously not accessible. You can only get there when you
have beaten the fifth level.

While in the elevator, it is a bonus stage where you can get cookies and extra
lives by picking up the items as they fall. Items will never have one on the
extreme left and the next one on the right. They will zigzag, but it is
possible to get them all with no misses. Missing one makes all the ones in the
air disappear and it wastes time while they dissapear The time you get in the
bonus stage depends on how big the gap of the floor you are on compared to the
floor you are going to. The bigger the gap the longer the bonus stage.
