                     02.01 - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. Q) Moves are not working.  What is being done wrong?
  A) Read the sub-section "Reading Comprehension" in section "03.02 - OF
PLAYING".  Also, some of the moves' input controls need to be executed
numerous times to perform them.  All moves like that are noted.

2. Q) Is it possible to smash _down_ levels?
  A) Not that the author is aware of; he has been unsuccessful in searching
for that.  He has never heard of that even being possible in any other
     versions of MORTAL KOMBAT 3.

3. Q) Does Smoke have his Spear move in the GameBoy version?
  A) No.  The author has thoroughly tested almost every possible input
combination that would produce a special move, and none of them have
resulted in success.  He has even asked Midway in two separate letters
(e-mail and classic mail), and both confirmed his results.  The only
Spear Smoke has is the one in his Fatality.

                              02.03 - THE PLOT

"You have been chosen to represent Earth in Mortal Kombat.  Be warned.  For
although your souls are safe from Shao Kahn's evil, your lives are not.  I can
no longer interfere, as your Earth is now ruled by the Outworld gods."
...These are the words of Rayden

For centuries Earth has used Mortal Kombat to defend itself against the
Outworld's Emperor, Shao Kahn.  But Kahn grows frustrated by failed attempts to
take Earth through Tournament battle.  He enacts a plan which began 10,000
years ago.

During that time Shao Kahn had a Queen.  Her name was Sindel, and her early
death was unexpected.  Kahn's shadow priests, led by Shang Tsung, made it so
Sindel's spirit would someday be reborn: not on the Outworld, but on the Earth
Realm itself.  This unholy act gives Shao Kahn the power to step through the
dimensional gates and reclaim his Queen, thus enabling him to finally seize the
Earth Realm.  Upon breaching the portal into Earth, Shao Kahn slowly transforms
the planet into a part of the Outworld.  He strips the Earth of all human life:
claiming every soul as his own.  But there are souls which Kahn cannot take.
These souls belong to the Warriors chosen to represent Earth in a new Mortal
Kombat.  The remaining humans are scattered throughout the planet.  Shao Kahn
sends and army of fierce Outworld Warriors to find and eliminate them.  Some of
Earth's Warriors survive the attacks.  Most do not, but the remaining few hold
the one chance at saving all of human kind...

                             02.04 - GENEALOGIES

These genealogies exhibit how the characters are related to one another.  One
asterisk (*) in a character's box indicates that they are not in the GameBoy
version of MORTAL KOMBAT 3.  Two asterisks in a character's box indicates that
they are not in any version of MORTAL KOMBAT 3.

Earth Forces
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
In this loose genealogy, most characters are not blood-related except by the
dint of blood that they have all spilled.  To that end, the Earth Forces are no
more virtuous than the Outworlders and still fight each other if no worse enemy
is around.

Outworld Forces
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The Outworld loyalties are constantly in flux, fueled by the hatred and
mistrust of the centuries.  Adding to the chaos is the penchant of Shao Kahn to
pervert the motives of all he encounters in order to find a portal to the Earth
for his own nefarious ends.

                           03.01 - GETTING STARTED

------------------------------ Game Introduction ------------------------------

MORTAL KOMBAT 3 was first released in Arcades in 1995.  Later that year the
"home system" versions (such as the GameBoy version) of it were released.  The
GameBoy version of MORTAL KOMBAT 3 is based on the Arcade version.

Game Setup
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Two players fight each other in a one-on-one match to the death.  Whoever wins
two rounds first wins the match.  The matches are comprised of all the rounds
against an opponent.  A player wins by either defeating their opponent, or by
having the most amount of life left at the end of the round.  If there is a
tie, then the computer player is declared the winner.

Each character is armed with various unique special moves to aid them in the
fights.  If a player wins two rounds, "FINISH [HIM/HER]" will be displayed and
they will have the option of performing a finishing move on their defeated
opponent.  They will not have the option, however, of performing a finishing
move if the Timer is depleted before their opponent's Powerbar.

Characters
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
There are three types of characters in the game: regular, secret, and boss.
The regular characters are: Kano, Sonya, Sektor, Sindel, Sub-Zero, Sheeva,
Cyrax, and Kabal.  Smoke is the only secret character, and Shao Kahn is the
only boss character.  The regular characters are immediately selectable from
the start of the game.  Codes or cheats are required to enable the secret and
boss characters.  Depending on which tower is selected, four, six, or eight
regular characters will be fought, and then the final battle against the boss,
Shao Kahn, will follow.  The secret character, Smoke, will not be fought unless
a code or cheat is entered.

------------------------------- Getting Started -------------------------------

Note that the "Start" button can be used to quickly advance through almost
every screen instead of waiting.

After turning on the game and waiting through the legal screens, the MK3 Title
screen will appear.  Displayed at the bottom of the screen is "PRESS START"; do
so to be presented with the Character Selection screen.  (If the MK3 Title
screen is waited at for too long, the game will begin showing fight demos.
Press the "Start" button, or wait, to return to the MK3 Title screen.)

While on the Character Selection screen, use the Directional Pad to move the
flashing frame onto the character desired.  By default, the center square is
not selectable-- that is because it is a secret character.  To learn how to
play as him and other characters, look into the individual character sections
in chapter "04 - CHARACTERS" or chapter "06 - SECRETS/CODES".  This screen's
duration is limited to about eighteen seconds.

Not depicted in the diagram above, the nine squares have pictures of the
selectable characters' faces.  Use the below Legend to find who is where.

     ..... LEGEND .....................
     :  A = Sindel      F = Sub-Zero  :

     :  D = Sheeva      I = Cyrax     :
     :  E = Smoke                     :
     :................................:

After a character is selected, the Tower Selection screen will appear.  There
are three columns, or "towers"; each one representing a level of difficulty.
The taller the tower, the more computer opponents and the more aggressive they
will fight.  Use Left and Right on the Directional Pad to select the desired
tower.  This screen's duration is limited to about eight seconds.

After the Tower Selection screen, the selected tower appears up-close, with all
of the computer opponents' faces on it in the order that they will be fought.
This screen appears between each match, showing the tower progress.

The Versus screen appears after the Tower Progress screen.  This screen has a
detailed picture of both characters facing each other in a dramatic stance.
This screen will not appear before the final battle against Shao Kahn; instead,
the match will immediately begin.

The Kombat Code screen is the last screen before the match.  The row of six
boxes all contain a set of ten pictures, which if arranged in certain sequences
will activate codes.  If a valid code has been entered, the name of the code
will be displayed afterwards.  For more information, and all of the codes, see
section "06.02 - KOMBAT CODES".  This screen's duration is limited to about
eighteen seconds.  The Kombat Code screen will not appear before the final
battle against Shao Kahn, thus, Kombat codes cannot be used for that match.

-------------------------------- Match Aspects --------------------------------

After everything in the previous sub-section, the match will begin.  The below
diagram shows where each meter is located.

¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The Powerbars display the amount of their player's remaining health.  Each
players' name is displayed on their Powerbar.  Damaging attacks reduce the
Powerbar.  When a Powerbar is completely depleted, that player will lose the
round.  If the human player wins with a full Powerbar, "FLAWLESS VICTORY" will
be displayed.

After a round is won, a small circle (actually a small dragon symbol) appears
between the winner's Powerbar and the Timer.  This marks how many rounds a
player has won in a match.

Timer
¯¯¯¯¯
The Timer displays how much game time is left before the round must end.  Each
round begins with 99 seconds.  If the time runs out, "OUT OF TIME" will be
displayed and the player with the most Powerbar left wins.  If both players
have equal Powerbars, the computer player will win by default.

Run Meter
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The Run Meter regulates the amount of time a player may run.  When depleted,
that player will not be able to Run again until the meter fills back up-- which
it does automatically.

------------------------------ Match Environment ------------------------------

The Stages
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The stages are the areas where each match takes place.  There are five
different stages: "The Pit", "The Bridge", "The Subway", "The Temple", and "The
Bell Tower".

Some stages offer a feature known as "bi-level fighting".  Bi-level fighting
allows the players to start in one stage and end up in another.  On the back of
the game's package it states (as can be seen in section "02.02 - PACKAGE"):
"Secret portals that allow you to smash up and down into different
backgrounds for the ultimate bi-level battlefield!"
The author has not yet found or heard of a way to smash players down levels; to
his knowledge, they can only be knocked up.  The only known stage that offers
the feature to knock players up is "The Subway" stage, which arrives them at
"The Bridge" stage.  The bi-level fighting feature becomes idle when one or
both players are Shao Kahn.

Correlations
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Each tower (from the Tower Selection screen) has a set order of which
characters will be fought and at which stages they will be fought at.  The
below diagram shows that order.

                             03.02 - OF PLAYING

---------------------------- Reading Comprehension ----------------------------

Throughout this document there are terms that must be known to understand the
material-- this sub-section covers those terms.  All input controls have been
spelled out to prevent confusion and to simplify things.

Input Notes
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
• All moves can only be executed on the ground unless otherwise noted.
• While inputting the controls for special moves, no other buttons can be
pressed or held, or the move will not occur.

Directions
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
"Up", "Down", "Towards", and "Away" all refer to directions on the Directional
Pad.  "Towards" and "Away" are either Left or Right on the Directional Pad;
which one it is depends on which one will move the player either towards or
away from their opponent.

Inputting
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
There are four ways that moves are executed: ",", "+", "Rotate", and "Hold".
With the exception of "Hold" moves, if too much time passes between pressing
the sequence of buttons, the move will not work.

","       : Example:  "Input controls:  Down, Away, 'B' button"
Description:  First, press and release Down, then press and release
Away, and finally, press the "B" button.

"+"       : Example:  "Input controls:  Down, Away + 'B' button"
Description:  First, press and release Down, then press Away and
the "B" button at the same time.

Rotate    : Example:  "Input controls:  Rotate Down to Towards + 'B' button"
Description:  Rotate, or "roll" the Directional Pad in one easy,
fluid motion from Down to Towards, immediately pressing the "B"
           button when Towards is reached.

Hold      : Example:  "Input controls:  Hold 'B' button 2 seconds, release"
Description:  Press down and hold the "B" button for at least two
           seconds, then release it.

-------------------------------- Regular Moves --------------------------------

With the exception Shao Kahn, each character has the same set of regular moves.
Which moves Shao Kahn can perform are listed in his section ("04.10 - SHAO
KAHN").

Standing Moves
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Punch:  "B" button
Kick:  "A" button
Roundhouse: Towards + "A" button
Throw:  Hold "B" button 1 second, release.
Notes:  This can only be performed while adjacent to the opponent.  This
cannot be performed against Shao Kahn.
Run:  Towards + "B" + "A" buttons
Notes:  When the input is executed, a Roundhouse will often be performed
before Running.  This glitch cannot be avoided.
Block:  "Start" button

Crouching Moves
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Uppercut:  Down + "B" button
Punch:  Down + Towards + "B" button
Kick:  Down + "A" button
Sweep:  Away + "A" button
Block:  Down + "Start" button

Aerial Moves
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Jump Punch:  Up + "B" button
Jump Kick:  Up + "A" button

--------------------------- Special/Finishing Moves ---------------------------

Special Moves
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Each character has their own unique set of special moves.
• All moves can only be performed one at a time unless otherwise noted.
• Some moves will not work against Shao Kahn.  All moves like that are noted.
• Some moves are hard to perform, and require their input controls to be
executed numerous times to perform them.  All moves like that are noted.

Finishing Moves
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
If a second round is won, and the Timer was not depleted before the loser's
Powerbar, "FINISH [HIM/HER]!" will be displayed, and the winner will have about
eight seconds to perform a finishing move, or "finisher".  This small period of
time is known as "finishing time"; it is the only time that finishers can be
performed.  Each character has two finishers: a Babality and a Fatality.  If
the loser is injured, the finishing time will end.  There is no option of
performing finishers in the final battle against Shao Kahn.

Babality  : Description:  The victor transforms their opponent into a baby
           version of themselves.
Notes:  If a Block is performed in the round which the victor
wishes to perform the Babality, the Babality will not occur.

Fatality  : Description:  The winner finishes off their opponent in a brutal
           and/or gruesome way.
Notes:  Some Fatalities require the performer to be a certain
distance away from their opponent; Fatalities like that are noted.

Mercy     : Description:  The winner grants their opponent a small portion of
life back, and one last chance to win the round.
Perform this by holding PUNCH and pressing DOWN four times at the
           end of the third round.
Notes:  This can only be performed in the third round.

----------------------------- General Strategies ------------------------------

These general strategies can be used with every character except Shao Kahn.
See chapter "04 - CHARACTERS" for strategies specific to each character.

Tips/Notes
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
• The computer player will constantly advance towards their opponent, usually
by Running or Walking.  The Roundhouse is the best move to keep them away.
• The computer player does not use any real strategy, so just fight
aggressively.  Matches can easily be won by simply attacking with multiple
  Jump Kicks.
• Special moves are almost impossible to execute since the computer player
often rushes at and attacks their opponent before they can perform them.
So, try knocking the opponent away first when attempting a difficult move.
• Avoid persistent Blocking; the computer will attack relentlessly while their
  opponent is Blocking.

Versus Shao Kahn
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Offense   : 1. Barrage him with tons of Jump Kicks.
           2. Roundhouses may do more damage, but they are hard to connect;
Sweeps are the safest way to knock him back.

Defense   : 1. If he performs his Charge move, Sweep him.
           2. Crouch his Fireball move instead of Blocking it.
           3. Keep him a safe distance away so that he cannot perform his
           Mallet or Cheap Punch moves.
           4. Avoid the sides of the stage.  If cornered, he will relentlessly
assault his opponent with his Horizontal and Jumping Charge moves.

_______________________________________________________________________________
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯

In this chapter, the descriptions "Punch", "Kick", and "Block" will be used
instead of "'B' button", "'A' button", and "'Start' button".  This is to
prevent confusion and to simplify things.

To avoid redundancy, the characters' names have been abbreviated in
descriptions to only the first letter of their name (i.e. "Sonya" would be
"S.").

Biography
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
As a Chosen Warrior, his identity is a mystery to all.  It's believed that he

Strategies
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯

Biography
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Third of the three prototype Cybernetic Ninjas, Smoke's unit designator was
erased in a computer crash.  Lost as he is to software control, no one can be
sure that he will complete his ultimate programming, i.e., kill Sub-Zero.  So,
he is somewhat of a wild card in the Tournament deck.

Ways Enabled
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Because S. is a secret character, a code or cheat must be enabled to play as
him.  Below are all the known ways that can be achieved.
• GameGenie:  F7F-FDA-000
• GameShark:  0104CED4
• Kombat code:  192234

Special Moves
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Teleport  : Input controls:  Towards, Towards + Kick
Punch      Description:  S. dives into the ground and quickly resurfaces
           behind his opponent, Uppercuting them.
           Notes:  N/A

Invisible : Input controls:  Up, Up + Punch
Description:  Extending his arms, S. turns completely invisible.
Notes:  To become visible again, either execute the input controls
once more, or get hit.  The computer player will still know where
           Smoke is located.

Finishing Moves
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Babality  : Input controls:  Down, Down, Away, Away, Kick
Description:  S. morphs his opponent into an infant.

Description:  A giant spear shoots out from S.'s chest armor,
impales his opponent, and proceeds to shake them around.
Notes:  If not executed at a close enough range, the spear will not
reach his opponent, and the Fatality will not count.

Strategies
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
General   : 1. Perform S.'s Teleport Uppercut move constantly.  The input
controls can be executed right before dropping to the ground from
the previous Teleport Uppercut move to prevent from ever landing.

Versus    : 1. Perform S.'s Teleport Uppercut move constantly.  The input
Shao Kahn  controls can be executed right before dropping to the ground from
the previous Teleport Uppercut move to prevent from ever landing.

Biography
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Many decades ago, Shao Kahn rose to power in the Outworld, usurping the realm
from Kitana's parents and taking Queen Sindel for his bride.  But she died.
Now, centuries later, Sindel is reborn.  And since Shang Tsung failed to win
the Earth Realm through Mortal Kombat 1 and II, her rebirth is the means by
which Kahn will finally seize the planet forever unless...

Ways Enabled
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Because S. is a boss character, a code or cheat must be enabled to play as him.
Below are all the known ways that can be achieved.
• GameGenie:  N/A
• GameShark:  0109CED4
• Kombat code:  N/A

Important Notes
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
• Minor graphical glitches will occur while playing as S.-- they cannot be
  amended.
• If S. gets thrown by the computer opponent, the game will crash.  To prevent
this, use the "Throwing Disabled" Kombat code.

Miscellaneous Notes
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
• Because S. was not supposed to have a Versus screen picture or an ending, no
picture or ending text was programmed into the game for him.  Instead, for
reasons unknown, Kabal's Versus screen picture will be shown.
• The bi-level fighting feature becomes idle when one or both of the players
  are S.
• S. has a limited set of regular moves, all of which are listed below.

Regular Moves
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
• Punch
• Kick
• Throw
• Uppercut
• Block

Special Moves
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Horizontal: Input controls:  Hold Kick 2 seconds, release
Charge     Description:  With his armored knee and arm in front, S. charges
           horizontally towards his opponent.
           Notes:  N/A

Jumping   : Input controls:  There are two variations of this move.  Input
Charge     number 1 will perform a diagonal charge, and number 2 will perform
           a vertical charge.
                 1. Up + Away or Up + Towards
                 2. Up + Punch or Up + Kick
Description:  In the same position as his Charge move, S. either
jumps up or towards his opponent.
           Notes:  N/A

Fireball  : Input controls:  Rotate Down to Away + Punch
Description:  Kneeling down, S. tosses a fireball horizontally
           towards his opponent.
Notes:  This can be Crouched under.

Mallet    : Input controls:  N/A
Description:  S. pulls out a mallet, and swings it over his head
towards his opponent.  If struck, they will become incapacitated
           for a second.
Notes:  Due to programming, this can only be performed by the
           computer player.

Cheap     : Input controls:  Rotate Down to Towards + Punch
Punch      Description:  S. reaches out his arm to grab his opponent.  If
grabbed, he will lift them up and punch them across the screen.
Notes:  Regardless of the computer player's distance, he will be
able to grab them.  This does not work against Shao Kahn.

Finishing Moves
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Babality  : Input controls:  Towards, Towards, Down, Down, Kick
Description:  S. leans forward in a different stance for a second.
Notes:  "BABALITY" will not be displayed and his opponent will not

           for more information.

Fatality  : Input controls:  Towards, Towards, Towards + Kick
Description:  S. pulls out a mallet and slams it into his
opponent's head, sending them flying across the screen.
Notes:  This must be performed while close to the opponent so that
the mallet hits them.  If the mallet does not hit them, the
Fatality will not count.  Since it is a finishing move, it can only
be performed once during each finishing time.  "FATALITY" will not
be displayed.  See section "07.02 - SHAO KAHN'S FINISHERS" for more
           information.

Strategies
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
General   : 1. Perform S.'s Cheap Punch move persistently so that the opponent
never has a chance to attack.

Versus    : 1. Perform S.'s Jumping Charge move constantly.  He often
Shao Kahn  retaliates, but ends up receiving more than he gives.

                            06.02 - KOMBAT CODES

After the Versus screen, and before matches, is the Kombat Code screen.  The
row of six boxes all contain a set of ten pictures, which if arranged in
certain sequences will activate codes.  If a valid code has been entered, the
name of the code will be displayed afterwards.  With the exception of the
"Smoke Enabled" code, each code's effect only lasts for one match.  The
duration for inputting codes is limited to about eighteen seconds.  The Kombat
Code screen will not appear before the final battle against Shao Kahn, thus,
Kombat codes cannot be used for that match.

                           06.04 - GAMESHARK CODES

Codes with an asterisk (*) need to be filled in with a variable.  The variables
are listed at the end of this section.  The codes are listed in alphabetical
order.

The Codes
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Player 2  : Combination:  010167CD
Incapaci-  Description:  Player 2 is always incapacitated.

code needs to be turned off in order to perform finishing moves.

Player 1  : Combination:  01FF14CD
Invincib-  Description:  Player 1 is immune to any damage inflicted on them.
       le  Notes:  N/A

Player 2  : Combination:  01FF54CD
Invincib-  Description:  Player 2 is immune to any damage inflicted on them.
       le  Notes:  N/A

Player 1  : Combination:  010*00CD
Mimic      Description:  Causes player 1 to have the same input controls as
the character they are mimicking.  Interesting things will occur
because player 1 gains some of that character's moves and
           abilities.
Notes:  When attempting certain moves, some glitches may occur, and
the game may crash.  Because the mimicked character's attributes
are gained, certain moves may not work against, or for that
character.  The most notable effect found so far is when Sonya is
mimicked, Cyrax is played as, and Sonya's Flying Punch move is
performed; it causes Cyrax to perform Sonya's Fatality during the
round!  See the next sub-section for the code's variables.

Player 2  : Combination:  010*40CD
Mimic      Description:  Causes player 2 to have the same input controls as
the character they are mimicking.  Interesting things will occur
because player 1 gains some of that character's moves and
           abilities.
Notes:  Read the notes from the above code.

Player 1  : Combination:  010*CED4
Modifier   Description:  Depending on the variable entered, player 1 will
           always be that character.
Notes:  See the next sub-section for the code's variables.

Player 2  : Combination:  010054CD
No Health  Description:  Player 2 has no health, thus, just one damaging
           attack will kill them.
           Notes:  N/A

Tower     : Combination:  010*A4C0
Position   Description:  Depending on which code variable is entered, the
Modifier   position on the Tower Progress screen will always be the same.
Notes:  This code must be turned off in order to advance on the
tower.  See the next sub-section for the code's variables.

Unlimited : Combination:  0103DBD4
Continues  Description:  Puts no limit on how many continues may be used.
           Notes:  N/A

Unlimited : Combination:  0109DFC0
Time       Description:  During matches, the timer will never count down, thus
giving an unlimited amount of time.
           Notes:  N/A

                              06.05 - GLITCHES

The following are all of the known useful and interesting glitches in the game.
They are listed in ascending order of usefulness and amusement.

More Finishing Time
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
To extend the duration of time to finish an opponent during the finishing time,
perform a special move that catches, freezes, or stuns opponents.  Each time
one of these moves are performed, it resets the time.  Thus, as much time as
desired can be given.

Cyrax's Fatality
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
While playing as Cyrax, during finishing time, perform his Bomb Drop move so
that the bomb will connect with his opponent.  Then, immediately execute his
Fatality.  If done correctly, Cyrax will shred his opponent, but the finishing
time will continue.  He can then move around and practice moves as long as he
does not attack his opponent's shreds.  When he jumps, the shreds will reform
and then fall back down again as he does.  Once he injures the shreds, the
match will end and "FATALITY" will be displayed.  Another way to end the match
is by performing his Babality, which will be declared a "FATALITY" instead.

Off The Stage
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
While playing as Sektor or Smoke, when their opponent performs a projectile
move, quickly perform the Teleport Uppercut move.  If the projectile connects
while beginning the Teleport Uppercut move, they be knocked out of the Teleport
Uppercut move, and will be on the bottom of the screen!  From there, they will
be able to move and fight their opponent, but their opponent will not be able
to attack them.  To come back up to the stage, simply Jump or perform their
Teleport Uppercut move again.  This glitch takes precise timing to properly
execute.

Fatality Shao Kahn
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Normally, finishing moves cannot be performed on Shao Kahn because he is a boss
character; but if a GameShark is used to play as him, they can.  Simply lose to
an opponent and occasionally they will perform their Fatality on him!  This can
crash the game.

Resurrected
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
During finishing time, perform Sindel's Scream move twice to resurrect her
opponent.  This will cause her to become incapacitated for about a second.  Her
opponent will not have any life displayed in their Powerbar.  Since it still
counts as finishing time, she will be able to perform either finishing move on
her living opponent, but she will not be able to perform her Fly move.

Off The Screen
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Normally, the characters cannot move off the screen (with the exception of
certain special moves), but there are some ways to get around that.  Note that
the sides of the stages cannot be left.
• With Sindel, perform her Fly move, then fly back against the screen.
• With Shao Kahn, simply jump back continuously.

No Sprite Collision
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
With Sindel, perform her Fly move, then fly into her opponent as low as
possible.  Sometimes she will go through them and they will not be able to hit
her.

Stuck Mid-Air
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
• While in the air, either playing as or mimicking Sindel, execute her Fly
move's input controls to get stuck.
• While either playing as Shao Kahn or mimicking him, press Block while in the
air with and adjacent to his opponent to get stuck.

                           07.01 - TRIVIA & UNUSED CONTENT

Unused Content
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
• Friendships were planned for this game.  There are special move control
inputs to perform them, and there is text to display "Friendship".  But
there are no additional Friendship graphic or character animations.

• There are various unused character frames such as pre-jump frames, a second
falling sprite for Sheeva, and Shao Kahn moves.
The latest images are here: http://tcrf.net/Mortal_Kombat_3_%28Game_Boy%29

Trivia
¯¯¯¯¯¯
• This is the only game out of the entire GameBoy and GB COlor library to be
rated "M" for "MATURE" by the ESRB.

• The back of the box shows an earlier version where Sonya's powerbar is
labled "Blade" (her last name) instead.

• Sub-Zero is missing his running animation (he just walks fast).

• The box says "bi-level battlefield", but you can only smash up, not down.

                        07.02 - SHAO KAHN'S FINISHERS

Shao Kahn was probably never intended to be a playable character in the GameBoy
version of MORTAL KOMBAT 3, thus, he does not have his own input controls for
special or finishing moves.  However, with the aid of a cheating device (such
as a GameShark), he cannot only be played as, but almost all his special moves
and, surprisingly, finishers can be performed!  But how could this be?

The author's theory is that a problem in the game's programming causes Shao
Kahn to share the same input controls as Kano.  Since they share the same input
controls, if Kano can perform finishers, so can Shao Kahn.

Since Shao Kahn was probably never supposed to be able to perform finishers
(since he cannot in any other versions of MORTAL KOMBAT 3), his finishers are
different from the other characters'.  Neither finisher will have "FATALITY" or
"BABALITY" displayed after performing them, but they are finishers.

When his Fatality is executed, he performs a glitchy version of his Mallet
move.  It must be performed while close to his opponent so that the mallet hits
them.  If it does not hit them, then the Fatality will not count.

When his Babality is executed, he will not transform his opponent into a baby;
rather, he will quickly lean forward, going into a stance which resembles how
he performs his Fireball move in the Arcade version.  All of the other
characters do something similar; when their Babalities are performed, they
quickly go into their stance for their projective special moves.  Why they do
that is unknown, but it explains why Shao Kahn goes into that animation.  Why he
does that specific animation is unknown.  It could have been from another
special move, part of a removed Fatality, or even a later changed version of his
Fireball move.  For a better look at the animation, see:
     http://www.freewebs.com/portablemk3/shaobabality.gif

Further proof that his finishers are actually finishers is given when the
author's "Player 1 Mimic" GameShark code is used.  While mimicking Shao Kahn,
play as a character other than him, then execute either of his finishers' input
controls during finishing time.  The character will then perform their
finisher.
