Version 0.8
Dates Written: April 11th to ?

I dedicate this to the NES fans out there, as this one is part of the NES
FAQ completion Project of 2004-2005, courtesy of the FAQ Contributor Board.
We honour the most truly awesome and great system... the Nintendo
Entertainment System!  Never mind about Atari, Commodore 64, Colecovision,
Sega Master System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Genesis, or
any of the newer systems, we all know that the good old NES is where true
gaming is at!

Also, for Cougar, Howler, and Koonce.  I miss you, and I hope you are living
it up in the afterlife as you did in this world.  You will always be in my
memories, and you will never be forgotten.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

1) This is a rather overlooked gem from the downside of the Nintendo
Entertainment System's lifespan.  The four courses are fairly varied, all
offering unique challenges, and the customization of the weather as well
as the potential for up to four players makes this a great play.  Some
might bemoan the fact that there are no computer opponents, meaning that
skins play has to be done with at least one other human being, but it is
still a truly pun game to sit down and patrol those holes.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------Controls----------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

2) This section will look at the basic controls for scoring all those
  lovely Pars, Birdies, and Holes-In-One!

D-Pad...: Moves the aiming cursor over the course in preparation for your
         next shot.

SELECT..: Brings up the Give Up Hole Option.

START...: Leaves title screen.

B Button: Hold it down to speed up the movement of the aimer cursor while in
         preparation for your next shot.

A Button: Confirms the aim of your shot, also starts the movement of the
power meter.  Now, press the Button to set your power on the shot,
then press the button again to get your accuracy meter as close
         to the center as possible.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------Settings----------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

3) This section will take a look at the different settings for each possible
  style of play.

                               o-----------o
                               | Play Type |
                               o-----------o

Choose Strokes or Skins, though Strokes is the only single player option, as
Skins requires the presence of at least one other human being to be used.

                               o----------o
                               | Player # |
                               o----------o

Choose between 1-4 players for Stroke Play, or choose between 2-4 players
for Skins Play.

                               o-----------o
                               | Play Mode |
                               o-----------o

Play is the option to enter into to take part in a 9 hole course at the
competitive level, while the Training option is made for a player to
practice a hole so they can do better in competition.

                           o------------------o
                           | Course Selection |
                           o------------------o

Select between playing the Traditional, Deluxe, Challenge, or Classic
courses, which are covered in detail in the next section of the FAQ.

                            o----------------o
                            | Player Details |
                            o----------------o

Choose what sex, what controller pad will control the player's shots, and
a name may be input in this section.

                          o--------------------o
                          | Weather Conditions |
                          o--------------------o

You can select to play with the conditions as Fine, Cloudy, Cloudy, or
Rainy.  Why yes, you can choose between two different cloudy settings, even
though they do not appear to have any differences from one another.  Weird
I know, but both are viable selections for some odd reason.

-------------------------------Course Outlines------------------------------

4) This section will look over the four different courses you can tackle:
Traditional, Deluxe, Challenge, and Classic.  Note that the ASCII maps
are approximate representations, not exact replications.  These are to
help plan your shot according to the advice given, so if you muff up the
  strategy, you are flying solo.

Aim straight at the hole, then hit the ball at the power indicated on the
Power Meter, followed by hitting the ball as close to perfect on the
Accuracy Meter, which will likely end up in the hole, achieving Par.

Move the aimer cursor out so it rests right upon the middle/top of the hole,
then hit the Power Meter at the suggested level, followed by a flawless
Accuracy Meter.  If you are off on the Accuracy Meter, the ball will likely
careen wide above the hole, or it will hit the wall near the hole, sending
the ball off course.  If it ends up with no direct line to the hole for your
second shot, use a careful wall angle bounce to try for the hole, but
remember that you will have to put more power into the swing than the Power
Meter suggests (as it is only reading for the power to reach the wall, not
the power required to reach the hole).

Aiming for the spot right by the start of the down arrows, hit the ball
through the opening (that Accuracy Meter is getting more important by the
hole) to sneak through the narrow opening, just rolling onto the arrows.
The arrows will then do their magic by pulling the ball down, then right,
and finally moving the ball up towards the hole, though it will likely end
up at the bottom of the arrows on the top portion of the hole.  From there,
(provided you did not luck into a hole in one) it is a straight putt to
reach the hole for par.

Aim your first shot to the lower half of the slope ahead, hitting the ball
just hard enough to reach the down arrows.  This will send the ball through
the arrows, getting it close to the barrier ahead (note that if you start
bouncing around inside the arrows, you will stop there, making control on
your second shot nearly impossible to achieve).  Now, you will have to hit
an incredibly accurate shot, as you aim for the opening in the barrier
ahead, passing through to hopefully hit the hole.  if the passage through
the barrier does not end with a hole, put it in now with little trouble
since the slopes are non-existent.

The goal with your tee shot is to put the ball between the two prongs of up
arrows, so hit it hard enough to just enter the first prong of up arrows,
which will put the ball near the back wall.  The second shot is to hit at
the hole, but hit is it harder than the indicator says to (about double of
what it says to hit normally), as it will counter the slowing effect of the
arrows the ball will be fighting through to get to the hole in two.

Aim your first shot to pass through the higher of the two holes, using
enough speed to rebound off of the slanted wall to go down towards the hole.
If you have hit it at the correct speed, a hole in one will be yours!  If
not, finish off the hole (though you may have to try to get the ball through
the barrier's holes first, then putt out).

The easiest way to play this hole is to aim your shot towards the top wall,
so the ball will rebound and start a downward motion off of it.  This way,
the ball will fight the pull of the arrows long enough for it to pass
through the slopy area to reach the hole, possibly going in.  With this
aimer cursor position, hit the ball with full power and get the Accuracy
Meter as close to center as possible to ensure a better chance of the ball
going into the cup for one.  If the ball enters a sand trap, it will slow
down immediately, so keep that speed drain in mind from here about sand
bunkers if you are forced to put through them.

A barrier with three openings, the order of toughness to enter them on one
shot happens to be (from easiest to hardest) top, middle, bottom.  The top
route is easiest to hit through, just aim at it, hit full speed, and watch
your ball end up on the slope on the far side, with a simple tap down the
hill to make your par (remember to hit for less than the Power Meter
indicates or the slope will push your ball over the hole).  I suggest this
as the most reliable method of getting the ball through the barrier in one
stroke.

If you choose to use the middle hole, aim towards the down slope that is
above the middle hole, then hit the ball at about the suggested Power and
try to keep the Accuracy Meter as close to center if possible.  If it works,
the ball will pass through the hole, catching the slope ahead to carry the
ball towards the hole (but likely past it to the top area).  Then putt it in
for your 2.

If you choose to use the bottom hole, it requires the most precise shot, as
you need your ball to catch the down slope below your tee spot while letting
the slope throw the ball through the narrow opening ahead to careen off the
wall into the bottom hole.  If this works, the ball will then have a shot at
going into the hole, but the chances of making this shot are very slim.

Wow!  What a tough hole to finish the day of Mini-Putt off on this course.
Anyway, put your aimer cursor just past the moving gate (aiming straight
ahead), allowing you to watch the swinging arm of the barrier to time your
shot off of.  Now, you will want to start the swing when the arm is at the
straight down position, using 3/4 power and a slight variance in the
Accuracy Meter, favouring the right side slightly (say three ticks or so).
If you have hit the ball correctly, it will go down the long tunnel,
bouncing off of a wall, and the arrows ahead will put the ball above the
water hazard.  However, if you were too harsh on your Power, the ball will
end up in the drink, so you might want to play it safe and just putt to
reach the no slope area at the end of the long corridor.  Now putt straight

Aimer cursor should be displayed in that group of downward arrows as
diagrammed above, then hit your power meter at about 5-7 ticks higher than
indicated by the preset amount, followed by being as close to center on the
Accuracy Meter as possible.  If done correctly, the ball will enter the
first chute leading downwards, where it has a shot at rolling into the hole.
If it does not make it into the hole, just line up your second shot for the
easy two (nothing wrong with a par).

If you want the chance at the hole-in-one, you will have to aim your shot
straight between the two blue walls, hitting the ball at full power with
an Accuracy Meter that is absolutely perfect, or your ball will not get
through to the arrows.  Although it is a tempting looking hole-in-one
situation, it is usually much safer to hit it above the blue walls at a high
power to bounce off the slanted wall to set yourself for a straight on shot
at the hole for your second shot.

Well, this is a rather blase hole... offering up a near guaranteed
hole-in-one, provided you are able to get the Accuracy Meter and Power Meter
lined up as indicated by the game (just set your aimer cursor directly over
the hole and  let the ball fly).  If you managed to miss the shot (likely
due to an Accuracy Meter error), hit your second shot in for the Par.

Despite the rather obvious appearing method for getting that hole-in-one
(which is of course the downward slope leading to the hole), it would prove
to be near impossible to get that right combination of speed, accuracy, and
aim to get it to actually work out (ie try it and you will not get the
hole-in-one, barring a lottery like fluke).  So, to get a better shot at
the 1 and in approach, use the position indicated above in the diagram, then
hit the ball at about 80-85% power.  If you have aimed the shot just right,
the ball will have a shot at making it into the hole.  If not, you will
still have an easy second shot to follow up with for Par.

The second opening from the left is the ticket to a hole-in-one opportunity,
but again it requires an incredibly precise placement of the Power Meter
(just below the suggested level) and Accuracy Meter (close to the middle as
possible).  However, even if you miss the first shot, you should be in
excellent position to go for the Par on the next shot.

Choices, choices, choices!  Here you can decide between three varying
degrees of difficulty in your shot selection, but with each harder shot is a
potential reward that awaits those who can pull off the big shot.  The
easiest route is to just tap the ball straight to the right, with enough
power to just enter the arrows, allowing them to carry the ball down to the
far end of the hole, allowing a second shot at the hole (though a bank shot
may be required to reach said hole).

The next hardest shot is the next slot down the hole, as it requires the
aimer cursor to just be at the start of the right arrows, followed by a
Power Meter that is perfectly aligned, same with the Accuracy Meter (helps
avoid short hitting) to send the ball rocketing to the right, blowing by the
hole to settle with an open look at the cup for Par.

The hardest shot also provided the only reliable shot at a hole-in-one.  You
need to aim for the lowest set of arrows, performing a Power Meter level
just below the suggested level, coupled with Accuracy Meter being as spot on
as possible.  If done correctly, the ball will zoom along the slope to the
right, having a shot at actually entering the hole.  If it was off center a
bit, then the ball will ricochet away, coming to a stop, allowing for the
Par putt to occur.

As the aimer cursor suggests, aim for the top right corner, right at the top
of the slanted wall.  Now, hit the ball with full power and as close to the
middle of the Accuracy Meter as possible, sending the ball rocketing
forward.  This is almost a surefire hole-in-one, so enjoy the freebie one
and in the game serves up here!

Well, this one is a Par 1, meaning you should get a hole-in-one EVERY TIME
you play this hole, BUT it appears to be that the programmers are mean as
this hole requires quite a bit of luck to actually get that aforementioned
one and in mentality.  Anyway, place your aimer cursor as indicated above,
hitting the Power Meter and Accuracy Meter as you would normally, which
should cause the ball to enter the second PIPE, sending it through to have a
shot at entering the hole for the Par.  Otherwise, you will have to settle
for Bogey or worse.

Well, despite the obvious looking path to a hole-in-one, the long wrap
around route will end with your ball jammed up in the workings of said
passage 97% of the time, making it a trap more than a bonus passage for use.
So, the easiest way to go after the Par (since a hole-in-one is in the
astronomically impossible range) is to put the aimer cursor out as
indicated, then hit the ball at close to full power with minimal Accuracy
Meter deviance to get the ball to bounce and roll below the set of high
arrows, setting up an easier second shot for the Par.

As the course name suggests, you will be challenged with every shot you
take.  Start off by putting the aimer cursor at the wall around the fourth
arrow, then hit maximum on the Power Meter, followed by as centered as
possible on the Accuracy Meter to have the ball end up around the hole area
(note that if you are slightly off on the exact conditions needed, the ball
will likely end up jammed in a compartment further back).  Then tap in for
the par, remembering that this is a challenge course, so shooting par for a
hole is a major accomplishment.

Put the aimer cursor over the fourth right arrow in the bottom opening,
followed up by hitting the ball at half power and an Accuracy Meter close to
the center, which will send the ball playing through the arrows, eventually
going down the chute.  Now, if you were fortunate in your bounces, the
second shot will be up to the arrows above the hole, requiring you to hit
the ball at a power level that is about equal to the distance suggested
(this will let the arrows take a shot at sending the ball down to the hole
below).  If you were unfortunately put into a situation where you had no
shot at the arrows suggested above, you will have to putt the ball into the
open area between the two arrow sets, setting up a chance for the par on
the luck shot at the arrows described above.

A rather tough hole, a par is an excellent score here.  Start off by moving
the aimer cursor to the spot indicated above, then hit the Power Meter
slightly above the suggested level with an Accuracy Meter that is dead on as
possible.  The ball will roll through two arrow sets into the next chunk of
the hole, requiring the aimer cursor to be placed so the ball will bounce
down the chute containing the downward arrows, hitting the ball at full
speed with minimal accuracy loss to get into the final area of the hole.
If the ball did not enter the hole through some luck, finish off the hole
for the par.  Note that this hole requires some incredibly good aiming and
mastery over power and accuracy controls on the part of the player.

Place the aimer cursor as indicated above, then set the Power Meter to three
or four ticks below full, followed by a perfect Accuracy Meter.  Most
likely, the ball will end up in the final area of the hole, near the actual
hole, but you may get lucky enough to get it perfect and get the coveted
hole-in-one.

Hit the ball to the aimer cursor spot indicated above at the exact Power
Meter and middle Accuracy Meter settings, which will move the ball into the
section of the hole short of the left arrows.  Now, aim for the right of the
opening below (right on the corner of the wall works well), trying to hit
through it with about half power and banking the ball off the narrow wall to
have a shot at the ball entering the hole.  If it misses, tap in for the
easy par.

Put the aimer cursor in the right arrows in the position diagrammed above,
then set the Power Meter at a slightly higher level than indicated, followed
by the typical setting of the Accuracy Meter as close to center as you can.
If this is done properly, the arrows will guide the ball toward the hole
area, possibly snagging a hole-in-one.  If the ball stays out (it likely
will), knock the second shot in for an easy par.

Put the aimer cursor over the hole, then hit the Power Meter slightly above
the suggested level, followed by an Accuracy Meter as close to perfect as

hole for a par!  If it does not go in, finish off the hole on the next shot,
settling for a bogey.

If you want the hole-in-one, you will have to aim down for the narrow
passage below the water.  This is nearly impossible to achieve, so it is
best to instead play it safe.  Place the aimer cursor as suggested above,
then hit the ball at about the same Power Meter suggestion (above slightly
is preferable) along with a spot on Accuracy Meter (though a bit of drift
will not hurt your plans).  The ball should come to a stop between the two
arrow sets, so aim directly for the hole, driving the ball into the hole
(set the Power Meter higher than suggested to fight through the resistance
from the arrows the ball will cross) for the par.

Aim for the far end of the straightaway, then hit full tilt on the Power
Meter, followed by anything near center on the Accuracy Meter.  If done
properly, the ball will end up on the lower half of the hole, requiring a
second shot to go for the hole, so you will have to plan around the arrows
as you shoot, remembering that the arrows will slow your shot somewhat, so
go about four ticks or so higher on the Power Meter than suggested (aiming
above or below the hole as the first set of arrows immediately ahead of your
trajectory dictates) to have a shot at the par.  This is an extremely tough
hole to par, but with a bit of practice, you will soon be acing it without
worry!

Using the aimer cursor spot indicated above, set yourself up to use the wall
to bank above the water to enter the final portion of the hole.  However,
you will not be hitting at the suggested Power Meter level (you will be
hitting the ball at maximum setting) and try to be as accurate as possible,
all the while timing your Power Meter setting to go when the swinging gate
is positioned at diagonal set, swinging downwards to bypass it.  If you have
done this correctly, the ball will have ended up in the final area, leaving
an easier putt for par.

Wow!  The challenge just rocketed up from hard to tough, but luckily for you
it is a Par 3.  Start off by placing the cursor just above the wall sticking
upwards (like in the hole diagram), then hit the ball at half power and as
perfect on accuracy as possible.  If done correctly, the ball will roll to a
stop short of the bridge, calling for the aimer cursor to be positioned so
the ball will travel over the bridge with the Power Meter set to get the
ball into the arrows (follow the suggested level) along with a reasonably
good Accuracy Meter.  The ball will roll through the arrow sets and across a
boat to the far shore, leaving a third shot that will have to deal with the
elephant again, so aim right at the hole, hit the ball hard enough to get
the ball there, and hit the ball when the elephant tail is positioned so the
ball will be able to pass through unmolested to hit the hole for the par.
However, a bogey is not a shameful score by any means here.

Put the aimer cursor at the entrance to the tunnel, then hit the ball at
2/3 of the Power Meter, followed by a dead on Accuracy Meter.  If this is
done absolutely correctly, the ball will end up in the hole in one shot!
Otherwise, you will have a short tap in to save the par.

Place the aimer cursor just to the left of the propeller (the spot where it
blocks the path forward), then time for the propeller to move to the other
position (the one that allows the ball through) to start your swing (hitting
it with full a Power Meter and a straight Accuracy Meter).  The ball should
end up following the arrows to the area around the Cannon in the wall, which
is where your second shot should be aimed, putting the ball into the barrel,
which will result in a launched ball landing in the contained area, right in
the hole!  With a little practice, a birdie is easy enough to come across on
this one.

Place the aimer cursor as indicated, then hit the ball at a slightly higher
than Power Meter level suggested (along with Accuracy Meter at optimal
setting) to have the ball crawl across the drawbridge into the courtyard
area.  Now, aim the ball for the hole in the wall on the right side, hitting
it through at about half Power rating and good accuracy to get the ball into
or near the hole.  If it remains out of the hole, tap it in for the par.

Place the aimer cursor as indicated above, then hit the ball with slightly
less power than the Power Meter suggests (as usual, close to the center on
the Accuracy Meter) to get the ball into the arrows, attempting to get it to
roll through the entrance on the right side of the shuttle.  If you manage
to go through it, the ball will roll to a position with a good look at the
hole, allowing you to go for the par.  However, if the ball went through the
left hole in the shuttle, the ball will end up behind the shuttle, likely
requiring three or more shots to get to the hole, so try for the right hole
to keep your scorecard looking clean and unmarred.

Place the aimer cursor just below the opening on the Cobra, hitting the ball
firmly, making it higher in power than suggested levels by about 10-20%,
then hit a as perfectly in the middle for the Accuracy Meter as possible.
If performed correctly, the ball will fight through the arrows, enter the
hole in the Cobra, and roll down towards the right arrows, which can send
the ball very close to the hole, perhaps even rolling in for an elusive
hole-in-one!  However, if it stays out, the Par should be very easy to
acquire (provided the first shot went swimmingly well).

Position the aimer cursor as indicated in the ASCII map above, hitting the
ball off the slant and into the Tajmahal above.  Now, whichever side the
ball was closer to as it entered the castle will determine which way the
ball will roll as it exits the building.  So, try to shade the ball slightly
to the right with the position of the aimer cursor, as it will lead to a
more advantageous position, meaning that the Par will be in reach on the
second shot.  However, note that that toughness of the random bounces here
can make it a very high scoring hole, so please keep that in mind.

This hole is really too difficult to expect a hole-in-one from it, so the
best bet is to place the aimer cursor as indicated above, followed by
hitting the ball with a Power Meter in the 80-90% range and an Accuracy
Meter that is relatively close to the center (a bit of variation is
acceptable, but a massive shift from center can have disastrous results
upon the direction of the ball, taking away vital speed for bypassing the
arrows ahead).  Provided you were not lucky enough to bullcrap yourself
into a hole-in-one, getting a shot at the hole is complicated further by the
fact that a swing that moves back and forth across the hole is in play,
demanding that a show tbe times to hit into the hole when the swing is off
to one side of the hole.  Try to time your shot, but do not be surprised if
the swing hits your ball away from the hole.  However, the swing can, on a
rare occasion, actually knock the ball into the hole, helping instead of
hindering your efforts as it was originally designed to do.

With that, the challenge of Mini-Putt is complete.  Now go outside and
 play some real Mini-Putt! ;)
