Thief - The main character that you control. You're the Worlds Greatest Thief.

Barney - Chief Cop. He looks normal and has massive eyebrows.

Shady - He wears shades even though it's nighttime.

Shorty - Jr. Guard. He's short. So he hops around.

Crazy  - He looks like Barney, but his eyes are bugged out and he waddles.

Gameplay

This game plays just like Pac-man. You need to grab every coin in the
stage to advance. If you get touched by a guard, you'll lose a life.

Objects

Coins:  The little dots around the stages. Grab them.

Money Bags:  They appear at various times. Grab them for points. Also,

grab them to stop the movement of all guards. During this time,

the guards won't hurt you if you touch them.

Diamonds:    They appear at various times. Grab them for points and limited

invincibility. You can kick guards off the screen for points.

Automatic Doors:  After touching them, they will open and then close. Guards

                   cannot open them.

Switches:  Touching switches changes which guards are inactive.

             Guards cannot use switches.

Doors:    Use doors to travel between rooms. Guards cannot use doors.

Alarm Clocks:   If you press it, all sleeping guards will awaken.

Walkthrough

Level 1-1

The introductory level. Easy enough. Let's you get a feel for the game.

Guards: Barney

Level 1-2

As easy as the first.

Guards: Barney, Shady and Shorty

Level 1-3

As easy as 1-2.

Guards: Barney, Shady and Shorty

Cutscene: Thief runs out of the bank like ... a thief... in the night.

Level 2-1

The introduction to Automatic Doors... and Crazy.

Guards: Barney and Crazy

Level 2-2

More Auto Doors. They split the level in half. Diamonds will appear on the bottom.
Money bags will appear on the top.

Guards: Shady and 2 Barneys

Level 2-3

There is a Barney in the room on the right.
Use a diamond or open the door and let him walk out.

Guards: Shady, Shorty and 2 Barneys.

Cutscene: Thief hops into his getaway car and drives away.

Level 3-1

The introduction to Switches.

Guards: Barney and Shorty (inactive)

Level 3-2

A larger level with six switches.

Guards: Barney, Shorty, Shady (inactive) and Crazy (inactive)

Level 3-3

Try to play as much as the stage with only the lone Barney active.
Be careful, because Barney is rather fast now.

Guards: Barney, Shady (inactive), Shorty (inactive) and Barney (inactive)

Cutscene: Thief leaps into air with a rocket pack on his back.

Level 4-1

Intro to Secret Passages and Alarm Clocks.

Best Path: Go up to get two coins. Then go back to where you started
and go right to get two more. Then, go up and to the right for six more.
Don't touch the clock. Go down, right, then up to go around the clock
and get the remaining coins without hassle.

Guards: Barney (sleeping)

Level 4-2

Best Path: Grab all the coins in the room that you start in.
Exit the room using the Passage in the northwestern part of the room.
Go up into the second room and grab all of those coins.
Then, use the secret Passage in the northwestern part to get to the third
room. Grab all the coins there too. Return to the first room where you started.
Use the secret passage to the right to get to the final room. Grab them coins.
Return to the previous passage to get the rest of the coins in the hallways.

Guards: Who cares? They all look the same when they are asleep.

Level 4-3

If you're like me, you'll actually be forced to hit an alarm clock while
being chased. The level gets a little trickier if all four guards are after
you. But not by much. No Passages here.

Guards: Barney, Shorty, Crazy (Sleeping) and Shades (Sleeping)

Cutscene: Hot Air Ballon Ride.

Level 5-1

Doors here. Shorty to the right and Barney on the top.
I'll number the doors clockwise, starting with the one in Barney's room.
1,2,3
6,5,4

6 -> 3
5 -> 1
4 -> 2

Guards: Barney and Shorty.

Level 5-2

More Doors.

1,2
3,$
4,5
6,7
D,8
9,0

1 <> 6 (Meaning, Door 1 leads to Door 6 and vice versa)
2 <> 7
3 <> 8
4 <> 9
5 <> 0

$ is where the Money Bag will appear.
D is where the Diamond will appear.

Guards: Barney (left side), Shady (right side) and Shorty (right side)

Stage 5-3

Doors:

1
2, 3
  4

1 <> 3
2 <> 4

Not too difficult. Make sure there is no Cop standing on the door that
you are about to exit.

Guards: Barney (inner), Shady, Crazy, Shorty

Cutscene: Thief has completely looted this bank. So he jumps in his plane
and flies away to Egypt.

Stage 6-1

Alarms, Secret Passages and a couple Automatic Doors.

Grab the coins on the left and continue down the path. You MUST touch
the alarm. Follow the path and outwit Shady. Attempt to trap him in the right.
Try to get through the Auto Door before Shady or the incredibly fast
Barney does. Wait for Shorty to move. Get through and grab the diamond,
if its there. If the diamond isn't there, make sure Shorty has went to the
right. You go to the left. There is a secret Passage all the way to the
left to the top. Stand there and wait for Crazy to walk by.
Grab the coins and backtrack if he turns around. You can hide
in the Secret Passage. There's also a secret Passage to the right of
Shorty's walkway. Its all the way to the right and down.

Guards: Barney (Sleeping), Shades(sleeping), Shorty and Crazy (all sleeping)

Level 6-2

Doors and Switches.

   1    2
   3
4 5 6 7 8
    9    0

(Horrible ASCII probably...)

1 <> 2
3 <> 6
4 <> 9
5 <> 0
7 <> 8

Make sure Barney is inactive before using doors 3, 4 or 8.

Guards: Barney, Shades, Shorty (inactive) and Crazy (inactive)

Stage 6-3

The ultimate heist. Instead of grabing all the coins, this time you
must push the key into the lock. And if the key touches one of those
squares, it will warp back to its original position.

Key's path
      _
|     | |
-----   ----
           |
  ----------
 |_________
          |

(Probably horrid ASCII there.)

In words, up, left, up, right, up, left, up, left, down, up.

If that isn't tough enough, Barney and Crazy on chasing you down.
You and Barney are about the same speed but Crazy is a bit slower.

Guards: Barney and Crazy

Cutscene: Thief pushes and then pull the diamond away.

Credits roll and they tell you the code for the extra game.

'A x 2, B x 2, A, B x 2'

in other words, AABBABB.

EXTRA Game

Stage 7-1

Back to the rat race. You can set up a baracade practically anywhere.
Use that to your advantage.

Guards: Barney, Shorty, and Shady.

Stage 7-2

The stage starts you off in a rough spot. Barney will be coming from above.
Shady will be coming from above leftest path. However, Crazy will be coming from
either directly the right or above. Wait until Crazy makes his move.
Then go the path he doesn't take.

Guards: Barney, Shorty, Shady and Crazy.

Stage 7-3

Its really easy for the guards to flank you on this stage. Use baracades
to prevent being ganged up on.

Guards: Barney, Shady and 2 Crazys.

Stage 8-1

Autodoors are back. Shady guards some coins and so does Barney. Here's my advice.
Grab a few coins until the Diamond appears. Grab the diamond and go into
Shady's room. Grab the coins, kick him a few times, and leave (try not to let
Shady free.) Then, after you grab all the coins except for the one in Barney's room,
another Diamond will appear. Grab it and get the last few coins.

Guards: Shorty, 2 Barneys and Shady.

Stage 8-2

Fairly simple layout. Just avoid the guards and use baracades when
necessary.

Guards: 2 Shadys, Shorty and Crazy

Stage 8-3

This stage is cut in half. Crazy and Barney guard the lower half; 2 Barneys
guard the upper half. Try to keep it that way since it gets crowded when
3-4 guards are contained in one half of the stage.

Guards: 3 Barneys and a Crazy

Stage 9-1

Back to hittin' switches.  A really simple level since the switches give
you an unfair advantage.

Guards: Shorty, Barney, Shady (inactive) and Crazy (inactive)

Stage 9-2

Guards are at a 3 to 1 ratio. However, the '1' is really fast.
Keep that in mind when you hit a switch. But it's easy to trap
Barney in the top right/left corners with baracades.

Guards: Shady, Crazy, Barney (inactive) and Shorty

Stage 9-3

There are switches at basically every intersection. Use them
when an active guard gets too close.

Guards: Barney, Shorty, Shady (inactive) and Crazy (inactive)

Stage Heart-1 (aka 10-1)

Instead of using double digits, the stages are now symbols.

Anyway, navigate through the invisible walls.
And there's no way around hitting that alarm clock to the right.
You have to hit it to get the last dot and enter the large room with the
guards.

Guards: Barney (sleeping) and Shorty (sleeping)

Stage Heart-2

As soon as the stage starts, move right and go up into the fourth
room. You'll avoid Barney and the alarm clock.

If at all possible, avoid hitting an alarm clock unless you are being chased.
There is a hidden passaged under the sleeping Shady.

Guards: Barney, Shorty and Shady(sleeping)

Stage Heart-3

This stage is one large spiral with alarm clocks.
If you see a small break between coins, chances are that there is a
hidden passage above/below/beside it.

Guards: Barney, Shady (sleeping), Shorty (sleeping) and Crazy (sleeping)

Stage Note-1 (11-1)

Doors aplenty.

123.
4...8
5...9
6...0
7...A
BCD.

B <> 3
C <> 6
D <> 9
2 <> 0
1 <> 5
4 <> 7
8 <> A

Confused? You should be!

Anyway, those coins in the corner can be really troublesome.
Get them when guards are far away.

Guards: All Four.

Stage Note-2

This stage looks alot like Stage 5-2.

1,2
3,D
4,5
6,7
$,8
9,0

Note: Each door WILL take you to the other half of the stage.

1 <> 0
2 <> 9
3 <> 8
4 <> 7
5 <> 6

(Notice a pattern?)

Guards: All Four.

Stage Note-3

Only two doors on this level. Figure it out...

Not too difficult of a level except that Barney is fast as the
Roadrunner.

Guards: All Four. This is the last time you'll see Crazy.

Off to Egypt again.

Stage $-1

Yikes. Shady is right over there. Try to keep him contained while you get out.
There's a secret Passage to the right, on the other side of the Auto Door.
You are going to have to wake up Shorty and the others. When you wake Shorty up,
(northeastern room) be ready to go left since Shorty will be going right.
When going to the ridiculously fast Barney, open the door for him. Then,
run back and try to trap him to the right. Then, the last coins will be yours.

Guards: Shady, Barney, Shorty (sleeping) and Barney (sleeping)

Stage $-2

Doors and Switches

1...2
3?4.
....
5?6.
7...8

1 <> 4
2 <> 5
3 <> 7
6 <> 8

Make sure Barney is inactive when you enter his hallway.

Guards: Shady, Barney, Barney (inactive) and Shorty (inactive)
This is the last time you see Shorty.

Stage $-3

If you have hair, feel free to pull it out.

This level is INSANE. It plays just like 6-3 but the guards are extra
tough.

           K
 Diamond   |
            __
   |          |
   _______    |
         |    |
    _____     |
   |          |
   |__________

(I should take lessons on making ASCII, ya?)

Anyway, it's down, right, down, left, up, right, up, left, up.

There's this long pathway on the right. It's great for trapping guards.
Make sure that the other guard isn't coming from above/below to sandwich
you.

Guards: Shady and Barney.

The Slot Machine

After every 3 rounds, you play a Slot Machine bonus game. The number of
credits that you have is equal to the number of diamonds you grabbed during
the previous 3 rounds.

D = Diamond, $ = Money Bag, C = Cop, T = thief, x2 = times 2, * = anything

DDD  -> Bonus $
DDx2 -> Bonus $
$$$  -> 1up
$$x2 -> 2up
CCC  -> Lose 2 turns
CCx2 -> lose many turns
T**  -> 1up
TT*  -> 2up
TTT  -> 3up
TTx2 -> 6up

FAQ

Q: Compare Lock 'n' Chase to Pac-man.

A: The movement is the same. The Diamond acts just like a Power Pellet does.
However, stages are more varied in LnC and have more variety.
Also, the thief can do something PacMan can't. He can stop moving without
running into a wall.

Q: When can you touch a guard and not lose a life?

A: When the guard is asleep, inactive or stunned by a money bag.
Also, after touching a diamond.

Q: What can guards use?

A: Guards cannot use anything. They can walk over switches, clocks, and doors.
They cannot walk over Automatic doors, baracades or hidden passages.

Q: Do I have to beat the game to play the 'Extra Game'?

A: No. Just input the code 'AABBABB' at the Title Screen.

Q: The code doesn't work for me / I hear a noise but the word 'Extra' doesn't appear.

A: Keep pressing A slowly until you hear the 'incorrect' noise. Then, input the code.

Q: How come I can't play the Slot Machine Bonus Game?

A: You didn't grab any diamonds during gameplay.

Q: High Score?

A: 57580 on Extra mode.

Q: Favorie Guard?

A: Crazy is kinda cute.

Q: Any stories about this game?

A: Yes. When I was about 12, my parents bought this game for me but I couldn't
play it until my birthday (next week). But I played it anyway. I got punished
by not being able to play it until my brother's birthday (next month).
No big deal. The NES was ready for me.
