I dedicate this to the NES fans out there, as this one is part of the NES
FAQ completion Project of 2004, courtesy of the FAQ Contributor Board. We
honour the most truly awesome and great system... the Nintendo Entertainment
System! Never mind about Atari, Commodore 64, Colecovision, Sega Master
System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Genesis, or any of the
newer systems, we all know that the good old NES is where true gaming is at!
Also, for Cougar, Howler, and Koonce. I miss you, and I hope you are living
it up in the afterlife as you did in this world. You will always be in my
memories, and you will never be forgotten.

1) The following is the work of Brian P. Sulpher mixed with the information
from within the game to create a story. It is in know way the vision of
the game authors (necessarily), though some names and similarities are
bound to occur.
The Rusty Nailers Company has been performing their crooked and strong-armed
deeds, taking over the city. They will take out anyone who gets in their
way as they foreclose on people, wreck their houses, and charge ridiculous
prices. However, Hammerin' Harry was one person who was not intimidated by
these brutes, which drew the ire of the Rusty Nailers Company. The Rusty
Nailer Co. proceeded to destroy Harry's home, so he decided to take up his
Hammer and head out to exact some revenge while destroying the evil
corporation once and for all!
So, grab your hammer and head out to bust some skulls, as the Rusty
Nailer Company needs to be taken down in this oh so fun platformer from
Irem!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------Basic Controls--------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
2) This here will run you through all of the moves that Hammerin' Harry can
call upon in his fight against the nasty Rusty Nail Company!
D-Pad : LEFT and RIGHT will move Harry in the corresponding directions.
DOWN will make Harry duck while holding his Hammer in front of him
while UP will cause Harry to hold his Hammer over his head,
protecting him from some attacks from above.
SELECT : Uses Reserve Item.
START : Pauses/unpauses the game.
B Button: Swings Harry's hammer.
A Button: Harry will leap into the air.

3) Welcome to the "Needless Markup Shopping Maul"! LET'S GET BUSY!
o---------o
Enemies
o---------o
Crowbar Boy.: These blue fellows will charge at Harry, looking to make use
of their implements on Harry. Crank them before they can
crank you.
Diner.......: Hiding out in a cafe, they will step out as Harry approaches
and/or passes, throwing their bowl into the air before
running in terror (if a guy had a big mallet, you would run
too). Anyway, use your mallet on them as well as their bowl
(if it appears to be threatening Harry) to rid yourself of
these annoyances.
Electrician.: These spark plugs will repel down from the hydro lines above,
where they will charge at Harry before jumping over him.
They usually appear in groups, so take them out as they
approach, but you can ignore them if they are following you
(they are no faster than Harry).
Foreman.....: Carrying a machine gun, he will try to fill Harry full of
lead. Try to pin these brutes against a wall, giving them no
room to hide from your multiple Hammer swings.
Sewer Worker: Hiding in the entrance to the sewers, they will pop up to
throw the manhole cover like a boomerang at Harry. You can
use your Hammer to block the incoming manhole cover, but it is
best to jump it and whack the man behind the steel projectile.
o-------------o
Walkthrough
o-------------o
Start off your crusade by bashing some Crowbar Boys to bits as Harry moves
right, finding a sidewalk cafe where three Diners will attempt to force feed
their dinner to you (whack them or watch them run away). Bash the crate to
get a Chile Pepper, allowing Harry to use the full range swing, then
continue to the right to find another set of Diners. one they are dealt
with, break the stack of Crates to find a Hard Hat, then run right past the
hydro poles as Electricians attack from above.
Once you are past these nuisances, Sewer Workers will begin to pop out of
their manholes, throwing their manhole covers out in a boomerang-like
fashion. The best strategy is to hold DOWN in front of them, using your
Hammer to block the flying manhole covers. Pass all of these annoying
fellows to find a stack of crates that you stand beside but not break.
Let the Foreman fire off three bullets from his machine gun, then bust the
crates and charge forward to smash the Foreman while he is still near the
wall, allowing Harry to crank him four times before he can fire off another
bullet. If you prefer to fight more conservatively, hit him a couple times
and then hold DOWN to duck the incoming projectiles before continuing your
attack. Once you are done dealing with this clown, head through the door
above to find the BOSS FIGHT!
Here you will find the Site Boss on a catwalk, where he will walk back and
forth, pausing occasionally to throw a massive bag of cement at Harry. To
defeat this jerk, you can call upon two possible methods:
i) Jump up from directly underneath the Site Boss and swing your hammer at
the arc of your jump to damage him. If you get him on the side with
your attack, he will bounce to the side, allowing Harry to keep
jumping and bashing him in a steady pattern. Eight hits will knock
this goof out.
ii) Wait for the tough guy to stop stomping around and throw a bag of
cement at Harry, allowing Harry to hammer it back up into the goon. A
little more dangerous due to the incoming projectile, but it only takes
three direct hits to wipe him out!
o-------------o
Bonus Stage
o-------------o
After the girl gets taken away, your job is to move back and forth across
the bottom of the screen, wiping out the enemies as they jump downwards,
thus earning a Bonus Item. If you score in the 36-40 zone, a Hard Hat is
your reward, but if you score 41 or higher, you will receive a vial of
Medicine instead!

4) Welcome to the "Rusty Nail Land Development Project"! LET'S GETS BUSY!
o---------o
Enemies
o---------o
Assassin......: Hiding inside a crate, he will pop out to throw some fiery
objects into the air before taking off. Dodge the attack
or pay the consequences!
Ball And Chain: Not your typical construction fare here as the Rusty
Nailers have modified this destructive contraption to have
even more harmful spikes line the metal ball. Dodge out of
the way of this monstrosity.
Demolitionist.: This guy likes to throw around high end TNT around as well
as show off his impressive aerobatic moves. He is
surprisingly tough, so take care to avoid his counter attacks
when he does not fall down immediately.
Hydroman......: These level pushers block your way through an area, so hit
them three times to send them flying from the controls.
Jackhammer Guy: Bouncing along while riding their modified jackhammers,
they will try to "drill" some sense into Harry. Either let
them pass by overhead, let them bounce off your upheld
hammer, or hammer their faces in to deal with them.
Welder........: Wearing green suits and goggles, they use their high
powered equipment to try and scorch Harry. Hit them
between blasts of fire to rid yourself of these hotheads.
o-------------o
Walkthrough
o-------------o
Start off by getting on the small ledge on the right and jumping upwards to
poke the Hyrdoman three times with your upraised Hammer (hold UP while
jumping, pressing B to poke him) to knock him out, thus shutting off the
water. Now head right, fighting past Jackhammer Guys, continuing till you
find a set of crates holding a Large Hammer. With your impressive equipment
on display, move up and left to climb a ladder to find an elevator
descending at some spikes, so jump onto it as it lowers to your level, then
jump off to the far side.
Climb the ladders above, fighting past the Welders (wait to move in until
they are done attacking) to climb to a ledge where a lone crate waits. Go
right to see another elevator set-up, so wait for it to lower far down it's
path, allowing Harry to run off the ledge and land on it. If you need a
Hard Hat, hop to the ledge on the left to smash the crate for one, then
continue right across the spikes to the safe ledge.
The crate here contains a Chile Pepper (do not bust open if you wish to keep
your Large Hammer power-up), then jump across the lower ledges as you move
to the right, allowing Harry to avoid the Ball And Chain swinging above.
Jump the gap to grab a hold of the bottom of the ladder, climb up to smash
the Hydroman, and then continue right to smash some crates for a Wristwatch,
but be careful of the Assassin waiting in the nearby crate!
Continue to the right to find the Demolitionist waiting to dance with Harry.
Club the acrobatic fellow as he runs and jumps through the area, while
avoiding his TNT attacks when he is on a ladder. Once he has been cleared
away, climb the ladder on the right, head down to hop to the ladder over the
gap, and then hop tot he ledge on the right to bust a crate for the Hard Hat
inside (if needed) before scaling down the ladder you just jumped off to
enter into the BOSS FIGHT!
The Loader is being driven by the Demolitionist, which is not such a big
shock when you consider the fact that it will drop three pieces of TNT every
time it stops moving. To defuse this highly explosive situation, wait for
the Loader to stop moving, which signals it will begin to drop it's
ordinance. Move Harry in so he will be standing just off to the side,
partially underneath the Loader. This will allow Harry to jump up (holding
UP as he does so) and poke the machine with his Hammer. After eight of
these hits, the Loader will be scrapped.
o-------------o
Bonus Stage
o-------------o
Here a pink mole will appear out of one of his many holes in the ground and
ceiling, and it is up to Harry to ring his bell every time his small, pink,
rodent nose peaks out of one of these holes. A Hard Hat is yours for
landing 9-11 Hits on the pink ground dweller, but a Wristwatch is your
reward if you manage to get 12 or more Hits in!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------Level 3-----------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
5) Welcome to the "Waterfront Struggle"! LET'S GET BUSY!
o---------o
Enemies
o---------o
Crowbar Boy.: These blue fellows will charge at Harry, looking to make use
of their implements on Harry. Crank them before they can
crank you.
Dock Worker.: These repairmen will use their nail guns from their boats to
try and shoot Harry from the water below. Go past them
quickly or they will surely NAIL you!
Fish........: They jump out of the water in large arcs and try to hit Harry.
Avoid them or hammer them, they will bug Harry at the worst
possible moments.
Foreman.....: Carrying a machine gun, he will try to fill Harry full of
lead. Try to pin these brutes against a wall, giving them no
room to hide from your multiple Hammer swings.
Jetpacker...: These red suited fellows will attempt to fly into Harry,
choosing an area where they can throw Harry into a dangerous
predicament causing death. Hit them once to rid yourself of
them temporarily, but they will reappear quickly.
Minstrel....: This white-suited musician will use his power of control on
the Seagulls to have them attack Harry in pairs until Harry
can knock some sense into him.
Seagull.....: Driven by the music of the Minstrel, these birds will harass
Harry with their peckings until the Minstrel is quieted.
o-------------o
Walkthrough
o-------------o
Smash the crates to the left to get a Chile Pepper and a Jump Suit, allowing
Harry to swing a full rotation as well as jump higher. Now head right,
battling the Crowbar Boys while dodging the Dock Workers nail attacks from
below, finding some crates (break them open one at a time, using the
Medicine within before collecting the next set of Medicine).
Once this is done, head right over the spikes and large crates to find a
Foreman, so duck his shots and land seven hits to make him go away. Now get
into the boat to begin a journey across the water, where Fish will arc
through the air on a regular schedule (which are bad enough), but they will
joined by Jetpackers appearing in sets of two (which are far worse). Try to
jump and hit them as they approach, not allowing them time to swoop in and
knock Harry off the raft.
Once you reach shore, Seagulls will begin to harass Harry, so swing your
Hammer repeatedly until the one that is to the right of Harry attack and
begins to retreat, signaling Harry to jump forward and smash it. Continue
right till another one appears, then repeat this pattern until you can reach
the Minstrel, who needs to have his teeth jarred loose, which will also stop
the Seagull attack. Jump the water gap to enter the building ahead to find
the BOSS FIGHT!
Here a few of the Rusty Nailers Company's finest will be in a red car that
will they will try to use to run you down. They also are carrying a handgun
or two that they will sue to shoot at Harry. The simplest and most
effective way to destroy the vehicle is to jump the car as it attempts to
run Harry down, which will land Harry on the trunk, at which point he should
use his Hammer repeatedly to scrap the fine automobile. If you have lots of
health left, you can also just start swinging like crazy as soon as Harry
appears, as they will not be able to damage him enough to kill him before he
wrecks the car!
o-------------o
Bonus Stage
o-------------o
Use your Hammer to destroy the explosives as they appear from the chutes
above, wrecking as many as you can in the allotted time. Destroy enough of
them to get a Hard Hat, but if you destroy more than your fairt share to
receive a Lightning Bolt!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------Level 4-----------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
6) Welcome to the "Rusty Nailers' Building"! LET'S GET BUSY!
o---------o
Enemies
o---------o
Ball And Chain: Not your typical construction fare here as the Rusty
Nailers have modified this destructive contraption to have
even more harmful spikes line the metal ball. Dodge out of
the way of this monstrosity.
Frogman.......: These blue wetsuit wearing divers will hop out of the water
and try to initiate contact with Harry, so whack them first
or just avoid their frenzied charges.
Grunts........: These office workers are actually tough guys/girls in the
guise of pencil pushers, as they are really strong as they
charge Harry. Use your Hammer to keep them at weapon's
length.
Jackhammer Guy: Bouncing along while riding their modified jackhammers,
they will try to "drill" some sense into Harry. Either let
them pass by overhead, let them bounce off your upheld
hammer, or hammer their faces in to deal with them.
Secretary.....: This white suited coolio will throw guitars at Harry when he
is safe on his desk, but chase him off there to see some
wildly great jumping skills. Chase him down and "hammer"
the message home to the Rusty Nailers, as he does not take a
beating very well at all!
Sewer Worker..: Hiding in the entrance to the sewers, they will pop up to
throw the manhole cover like a boomerang at Harry. You can
use your Hammer to block the incoming manhole cover, but it
is best to jump it and whack the man behind the steel
projectile.
o-------------o
Walkthrough
o-------------o
Hold DOWN immediately to block the incoming manhole cover, then jump past
the Sewer Worker to deal with another Sewer Worker. Press DOWN to fall
through the pipe to the pipe below, taking on another Sewer Worker and
Frogmen, followed by Harry to continue to the right to pass under a Sewer
Worker, making him throw his manhole cover and leaving him vulnerable to a
jumping attack from below.
Yet another Sewer Worker is next up (as well as a waterfall where the
Frogmen spawn from), so jump the gap to find four more Sewer Workers
guarding a crate that contains a Large Mallet. once you have claimed your
prize, head right through a couple more pipes and a gap to find an elevator
leading up to into the Rusty Nailers Company!
Upon arriving, you will be accosted by the Secretary, who will throw guitars
at Harry form his desk. The simplest way to beat him is to charger and pin
him against the wall, bashing him mercilessly till he stops moving, but if
this is too hard to do, then just chase him down and clobber him as he flips
around the room.
Bust the wall to the left, moving forward slowly to bait the Ball and Chain
to fall from above, and then continue left past Jackhammer Guys and more
Ball and Chains to find some crates with a Hard hat inside. Following that
up is an elevator ride to the next floor.
On this floor you will need to crank the Grunts as they appear, keeping at
it till the elevator doors finally open and allow Harry to the next floor.
You will find crates here that contain a Chile Pepper (take it if you do not
want the Large Hammer), then go break the wall with a few hits to enter the
Rusty Nailerss Company's Boss Room! Ignore the secretary as you go, because
she can not be hurt en route to the BOSS FIGHT!
The wheelchair bound boss will beckon Harry forward before taking off and
leaving the Mutated Secretary for Harry to deal with! She is highly agile,
able to leap through the air repeatedly, throwing jump kicks as she goes.
To win the battle Harry will need to let the Mutated Secretary jump through
the air and land, at which point he should walk towards her to prompt her to
leap into the air once again. As soon as she is airbourne, have Harry
charge in the same direction to hit her as she lands. Run away from her,
waiting for her to leap into the air once again, starting the pattern over.
Land 10 hits (five with the Large Hammer) to send her flying and finish the
level!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------Level 5-----------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
7) Welcome to the "Rusty Nailers' Boss Mansion"!
Crowbar Boy...: These blue fellows will charge at Harry, looking to make use
of their implements on Harry. Crank them before they can
crank you.
Frogman.......: These blue wetsuit wearing divers will hop out fo the water
and try to initiate contact with Harry, so whack them first
or just avoid their frenzied charges.
Jackhammer Guy: Bouncing along while riding their modified jackhammers,
they will try to "drill" some sense into Harry. Either let
them pass by overhead, let them bounce off your upheld
hammer, or hammer their faces in to deal with them.
Sentry Statue.: These granite fixtures fire off small laser shots in a set
pattern guarding against the intruders. To deal with them,
approach carefully, using your DOWN defense, as your Hammer
can block the incoming shots. Once you get close enough,
smash persistent defenders into pieces.
Wax Droplets..: These are found dripping off of a chandelier, and they are
persistent in their attacks. Advance cautiously underneath
the onslaught, using your UP guard to block them as they
dripping line of Wax reaches your position.
o-------------o
Walkthrough
o-------------o
Start off by busting the nearby crates for a Hard Hat and a Lightning Bolt,
followed by ducking the next incoming laser before stepping up to bust the
Sentry Statue guarding the elevator leading upwards. Head left, watching
out for the Crowbar Boys who bust through the wall, then climb the stairs
(all the while fighting more Crowbar Boys) until you see a ledge on the left
to jump to. Use the crates there to jump tot he ledge above (no use
hammering them as they are unbreakable), and then bust the two Sentry
Statues.
Jump off them to the chandelier above, climbing the length of cord holding
it up, and then hop to the left to find a ladder leading upwards. Kill off
the Jackhammer Guy, followed by stepping under each Ball and Chain for a
brief moment and then retreat, removing the threat. Break the wall, dodge
the incoming Jackhammer Guys, and then leap onto the Ball and Chain (the
only safe one in the game), raiding the crate on the ledge nearby for
Medicine, and then use the same Ball and Chain to reach the ledge on the
right.
Here you will need to hop across the deadly water on small platforms while
timing your leaps between gushes of water from holes in the wall, and you
will have Frogmen actively hunting down Harry as you do so. Take it slow as
you move to the right, leaping straight up and down to avoid sinking into
the water, also remembering to use your hammer to protect yourself from the
incoming Frogmen.
Once you are across, rush through the falling wax from the chandelier,
busting the crate on the way for Medicine if you are feeling brave, and then
hammer on the wall on the right to break it, allowing Harry to pass by to
find the BOSS FIGHT!
The Big Boss will take to the air in his fancy, flying chair, attacking
Harry by throwing bricks into the air, which would fall in a concentrated
group. This is followed by him taking to the air to fly over the top of
Harry to try and land on him, and then he will start throwing bricks from
his chest to hit Harry once again. Your job is to bait him into falling to
the ground, then hop over him to attack him from behind. After eight hits
he will kick it, and Harry will have freed him from his money obsession!
CONGRATULATIONS ON DEFEATING THE REGULAR GAME! NOW PICK UP YOUR HAMMER
AND GO OUT TO THE HARD VERSION OF THE GAME, WHERE ENEMIES ARE HARDER TO
KILL AND THEY ARE MORE AGGRESSIVE!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------Power-Ups/Items-------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Truly a neat little gem of a game that is overlooked by most, mainly due
to the Europe only release. However, I highly recommend any NES fan
worth their salt take a look at this fun little platformer because it is
a fun little romp that is worth the play through! If you found it too
easy, definitely give the Hard Mode version a try for true gaming
challenge! ENJOY!!!
