[HELP]
Crayon Shin-chan returns for the fourth of five outings on the Game Boy
(though the last 'numbered' one). Crayon Shin-Chan 4: Ora no Itazura Dai Henshin
is a platformer, much like the first and second games, whereas the third one was
a mini-game tournament. The game is based off the Crayon Shin-Chan manga, mostly
popular in Japan although translated and published in a couple of other
countries. Heavily oriented towards platforming, Crayon Shin-Chan 4 also sees
the new feature of three costumes Shin-chan can wear for special abilities.
With the Super Game Boy, the opening title, credit roll and cutscenes
are coloured. The levels are not, however.
Unlike Crayon Shin-Chan 2, but like the first game, Shin-chan cannot use
bubble attacks in his normal form. However, in each of his three costumes (plus
his bonus masked form) he can use the B button to perform an attack, usually a
projectile.
The Chicken form lets Shin-chan jump twice as high as normal. He can
fire an egg attack that goes straight for a bit and then lowers in trajectory.
The (Flying) Squirrel costume allows Shin-chan to glide following a
jump. This also features a projectile attack, but with two nuts, one that goes
straight left/right and one that goes down at an angle.
The Insect costume cuts Shin-chan's height in half, allowing him to fit
through narrow crawlspaces. This costume's attack does not utilise a projectile
attack. Rather, Shin-chan can extend his antennae - any enemies that come in
contact with the antennae receive contact damage.
At the end of a couple of levels, Shin-chan can also get a Masked power-
up that makes him invincible to damage and spits out powerful firebolts straight
forward. However, the Mask power-up fades away fairly quickly, and Shin-chan
reverts to whatever costume he had prior to the Mask.
Shin-chan can also hop onto the heads of the enemy humans that are
interspersed around each stage. He can additionally leap onto hooks and branches
and certain ceilings, and scale trees.
There are also three mini-games in Crayon Shin-Chan 4. Each of these,
besides being played from the main screen, are played at a game room during the
intermission between levels. By collecting Smileys hidden and not-so-hidden in
each level, you can play the games up to three times per intermission.
You can only hold three Smileys at a time, even though each level has at
least six Smileys, in contrast to Crayon Shin-chan 2 where you had to find five
in each level for the Good ending. If you take damage in a costume, you revert
to normal Shin-chan. If normal Shin-chan takes a hit, he loses a Smiley, or a
life if he has no Smileys left.
The author is unsure if there is any specific Good ending in this game,
as atwiki does not make a mention of it, unlike their specific mentions for
Crayon Shin-chan (1) and 2. If there is, then it would probably be activated by
locating and touching the white dog that is found in each level.

Walkthrough

[WALK]
---------
STAGE ONE
---------
To start, go right, grabbing SMILEY #1 out of the air, then jump onto
the kid's head. Grab two Cannisters, then continue right to obtain the Chicken
Suit. Head right for three more Cannisters, one below, and take the top
platforms to continue rightwards.
Drop down from the platforms and spit out an egg with your Chicken Suit
form to knock the next kid down flat on his rear end. Hop onto the moving
platform and let it take you up. Grab SMILEY #2 and then leap over several
consecutive platforms, grabbing three more Cannisters on the way, then drop down
to the right at the end. Ignore the spring and instead head left. Spit an egg
out at the kid wielding a parasol, then head left to grab two more Cannisters
that only show up when you walk by.
Return right to where the spring is and jump up and to the right. Take
out a single boy up top with your chicken egg attack, then grab the next power-
up to turn into Flying Squirrel Shin-chan.
Run right across the bridge with the blocks falling down as you pass,
but stop right before you get onto solid land. Stay on the bridge and instead
press right as you fall down to discover a secret hideaway that contains SMILEY
#3. With that smiley in hand, jump out to the left onto a spring and up high and
to the right back onto the mainland.
Proceed right and down and either jump on top of the boy below or shoot
a nut at him (ignore the power-up above you). Continue right, hopping over the
pillars for two Cannisters and SMILEY #4. Landing on the other side, head right
through the walls, grabbing another Cannister, and spit a nut out to take the
umbrella-holding boy out.
Jump up using the spring, then quickly run left across the bridge,
staying ahead of the falling tiles. Grab two Cannisters, then continue left and
take out another boy at the end. Jump up on the platform above him, then head
right across another stable platform and then several moving ledges to get a
Shin-chan character doll that gives you an extra life.
From where you found the doll, jump right over to your white dog (the
author has no idea if coming in contact with the dog is supposed to be
important, but better safe than sorry given that the dog was an important
element in the prior two platforming games). Hop right from the dog. Ignore the
spring, and instead head right through the walls from the spring and then drop
down to get five more Cannisters.
Continue right through more walls to get two more hidden Cannisters,
then use the spring to grab another three. Move up the right, then take the
three platforms slightly to your left to grab SMILEY #5. Head right next,
eliminating another boy wandering around. When you come to the platform, take it
down, and grab the power-up below to activate Insect Shin-chan mode.
Head right to a waterfall backdrop with multiple platforms. Jump up and
right across the platforms to be able to sneak through a tiny crawlspace that
only Insect Shin-chan can get through for SMILEY #6. From there, drop left and
down, then hop right over some more platforms for two Cannisters and then a
power-up to get the Masked Shin-chan costume on.
Jump up and go left and send out a firebolt at the first boy to knock
him flat. Grab a Cannister and take the spring up and go right, eliminating
another young lad. Drop down the shaft at the end for five Cannisters and
continue right through the wall until you get into an open field.
You will have to face a baseball-cap wearing boy who fires frisbees. You
need three shots to take him out, and your Masked Shin-chan costume will fizzle
out after awhile, likely not lasting long enough to take him out completely.
Fire at him until the costume fades away, and you should revert to Insect Shin-
chan. As Insect Shin-chan, you cannot be injured by the frisbee as it sails too
high for Insect Shin-chan's height. Additionally, if you just press and hold the
B button, Insect Shin-chan extends out an antenna that hurts all enemies it
comes in contact with, so he cannot cause you contact damage either if you walk
up to him or he walks up to you.
After the conversation following the fight, you have an intermission. In
this intermission, you can spend the Smileys you collected throughout the level
(although there are 6 of them in this level, you can only 'hold' onto three of
them) to play one of three mini-games.
--------------------
STAGE TWO - PART ONE
--------------------
You start this stage off in the Squirrel costume. Head right onto the
boxes and jump off to the left for two Cannisters, then continue right, grabbing
a couple more cannisters and onto the platform. Jump or float across the
platforms to the opposite end for a Chicken Shin-chan powerup.
Climb down the stairs and take the boy out to the left of the bottom of
the ladder, then hop across the platforms, taking care not to fall in the water,
grabbing three Cannisters and SMILEY #1. Return back right across the water, and
head right from the ladder for six more Cannisters (three of them are hidden
when you jump up for the three visible ones) and then another two visible ones
after that.
Head right and take out two boys near the ladder. Climb up and head
right, eliminating a pair of boys, then progress right across the platforms for
an Insect Shin-chan power up. Return back left to where the ladder is, then
climb down the ladder. Go left for two Cannisters, and then right for SMILEY #2.
Take the ladder up to the top of the level. Press and hold B to leave
your antennae extended, then head right, wiping out a couple of boys by contact
with your antennae. Grab two Cannisters past the ladder, then head up the
ladder.
--------------------
STAGE TWO - PART TWO
--------------------
Hop up the crates to your right then go left up the platforms and jump
off for two Cannisters. Return to the crate and shoot an egg at the kid standing
on top, then go right and grab yourself a Shin-chan doll for a life-up.
Drop down from here for two Cannisters, then walk right to obtain SMILEY
#3 along with two more cannisters (where the floor tile disappears creates gaps
that you will lose a life if you fall down). Contact your dog, then run across
the ground further right for three more Cannisters and SMILEY #4.
Return to where the white dog is, then hop left and up the platforms,
then down and right. Take out three kids in succession as you cross the roof,
then take two cannisters at the end before heading down the ladder.
----------------------
STAGE TWO - PART THREE
----------------------
Walk right and jump over the first crate and then the ball. Continue up
to the ladder and then climb up. From here, head right, taking out a couple of
boys and getting the Squirrel Shin-chan costume equipped, along with grabbing a
few Cannisters.
Head back to where the ladder is, jump to get the two Cannisters right
above you, then head left taking out another boy and grabbing some more
Cannisters. Near the end, grab the Masked Shin-chan costume.
Immediately return back to the ladder and drop down, then head right,
powering through the balls and another lad without touching the Chicken power-
up. Once you get up the stage at the end, you will take on another boy, but the
Masked power-up will probably have worn out by then.
Spasm shooting your bullets at the boy from afar. When he gets into the
'running' race starting position, he will jump to the other side of the screen,
so move to the middle and turn around to fire at him, then jump over him when he
runs to the opposite side of the screen. After four hits, he will go down.
-----------
STAGE THREE
-----------
Hop onto the cart at the beginning and it will move on its own. Jump to
grab the first two Cannisters as it moves along. The grocery cart will continue
on, so grab the next three pairs of Cannisters by jumping off onto blocks and
rushing over them (if the grocery cart runs away on you, just wait, and another
cart will come for you to jump onto). Near the end, continue on past some more
blocks for two more Cannisters, and the grocery cart will reach the end of its
run. Climb up the stairs from here.
You will spot another grocery cart, this one going left, so hop on. Jump
over the first three blocks and drop down to recover three hidden Cannisters in
the space between the blocks along with the three up top. At the next long row
of blocks, take out a boy carrying a projectile weapon. When you get to the last
set of blocks on this floor, grab the three Cannisters, then get a hidden SMILEY
#1 by jumping straight up from the left-most block.
Go up the stairs, repeat with another shopping cart. This time, jump
right away and run past the boy who takes two hits to defeat. You will grab four
Cannisters running across that are all hidden. Hop over two more regular small
block platforms, then get two normal Cannisters, a hidden Cannister and a SMILEY
#2 before finally reaching the end.
Head upstairs and take out a kid at the start. Watch out for items
falling from the shelves. At the left end platforms, hop up and onto the
shelves, then go right and grab the Chicken Shin-chan power-up. Head back left
and hop over the walls, and drop down on the first kid for a Hidden cannister.
Touch your dog in the next aisle between walls, then grab SMILEY #3. Get
some more Cannisters, take out another kid and then dash past some more shelves
with falling items to make it up to the fifth floor.
Up top, dodge a soccer ball rolling left. Ignore the items and instead
continue right. Take out the kid on top of the blocks, then jump onto the
ceiling and grab on (Shin-chan will grab onto the roof automatically). Head left
to grab two more Cannisters and then get SMILEY #4 by hopping off. Proceed right
again, and drop down in the spaces between columns of blocks for two hidden
Cannisters.
Drop down to the floor, then head right across the floor for four
Cannisters. Move back left and jump up along some platforms to grab the Insect
Shin-chan costume. Continue afterwards right up to the sixth floor.
On the sixth floor, head left across the blocks and grab two Cannisters.
Head left to the first column of two blocks, then jump to grab onto the robot
thing on the zipline, and let it carry you through SMILEY #5. Drop down and head
left from here. Extend your antennae to take out the kid carrying around a
parasol, then drop down between the blocks and head right for a Shin-chan doll
for a Life Up. Head left and extend your antennae to take out another kid, then
head left and up again.
Coming up to the top floor, immediately grab SMILEY #6 to your left,
then beat up the kid coming from your right. Walk right to get four more
Cannisters before coming out into a roof area where you will take on this
level's boss.
The bear-like boss bounces around on the roof, tossing balls around.
Stay low and especially try to dodge getting hit, as you will lose your costume
if you get hit. You will revert to normal Shin-chan, but trying to beat up on
the bear is a lot harder as normal Shin-chan as you have to jump onto the lone
platform here and then hop onto the bear's head. Four hits is what it takes to
knock out the bear.
After the intermission, the final level.
----------
STAGE FOUR
----------
Starting out as Squirrel Shin-chan, head right and grab two Cannisters
to start. Continue right, getting a couple more Cannisters while stopping shy of
the coconut trees as coconuts fall down, then take out the first boy wandering
around after the third coconut tree.
Proceed past another coconut tree, then grab another Cannister
underneath the first rope. Jump up for a hidden Cannister, then a third
Cannister. Hope right for two Cannisters, then climb up the centre tree and jump
back and forth for two more.
From the third tree, jump right and down and go along the tunnel for two
Cannisters and then a power-up to turn into Chicken Shin-chan. Continue right
from here. Drop down then head right into the water, and hop across the water
via the beach balls (you cannot stay too mobile or else the ball will drop into
the water, taking out a life), grabbing several Cannisters on the way.
On the opposite side, climb a palm tree and hop off to the left side,
and follow along until you can grab SMILEY #1. Head back right from here. Ignore
the path leading down and right from the palm tree as it only leads to a
Squirrel power-up, and instead head up and right. Take out the first boy here,
then jump up the platforms, making sure to go left whenever possible. The first
corridor has a couple of Cannisters, while the second corridor has another boy
guarding SMILEY #2 and two more Cannisters.
Continue climbing up, taking out a boy to the left, then going up
platforms to your right. Eliminate another boy up top, then head up and left,
taking out a projectile shooter and a party-blowhorn boy. Drop down left from
here to grab SMILEY #3. Return back up to where the boy with the party blowhorn
was and go up the left side for an Insect Shin-chan costume.
Head back down several platforms (press Down + A to do this) and go
right to find a crawlspace to get through for a Shin-chan doll for a Life Up. Go
back out and head up the platforms. Taking the central path upwards will quickly
split into two more paths. Take the left side to grab multiple Cannisters and
touch your white dog at the top.
Continue right from here, taking out a couple of more boys on the
surface, then drop down when you can. Walk left, taking out another boy with a
party ornament, then jump up for SMILEY #4. Return right and drop to the bottom
of the tree. Go right and into the narrow crawlspace to locate a hidden SMILEY #
5.
Return to the tree and climb up. Jump off to the right, taking one boy
out right away, then head right across the bubbles. Hop up the platforms when
you can, and proceed left, taking out a boy with a paper airplane, then continue
to grab another 1-Up. Backtrack right and continue to run in that direction.
Going across the rope, you can use Down + A to drop down any three of
the vertical shafts to grab three Cannisters from each drop, then go left and
climb back up the tree to the top of the rope and repeat for another two drops.
Once finished up here, continue right past the rope, and drop down. Go right
through the crawl-space for SMILEY #6. Head back and go up the tree, get the
Insect costume to the left if you are not already wearing it, then continue up
and hop off to the right. Take out one final boy and grab SMILEY #7, then head
right.
Entering the battle area, you will fight some sort of dark-skinned human
who will climb up the tree and plant four coconuts before dropping down from the
left side. Park yourself as the insect aligned between the far left and second-
left coconuts, and extend your antennae left. Once the human drops off, he will
land on your antennae, and take damage. He will run past you, but because he is
still in 'damage-immortality' mode, you will not take contact damage. Stay in
that position until the final boss is defeated.
Afterwards, enjoy your ending.

Mini-Games
-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~
[MINI]
----------------
PRISON BREAK-OUT
----------------
The general gist the author gets is that you are having a prison break-
out here, so that is what he is rolling with for the mini-game.
As Shin-chan on the left side, you can move up and down four rows. On
the right side of the four rows, prisoners are constantly breaking out and
trying to breach the prison walls. Moving Shin-chan, you can press the A and B
button to fire energy attacks that hit the prisoners coming up the chutes,
sending them scurrying back to their cells.
You lose if a prisoner gets to the left side. Thus, you need to stay on
the ball and shoot back whoever is furthest along. The normal prisoners who have
a bag over their heads with what appears to be a B-letter on the bags do not
offer up any defenses. The white-masked guys, however, scurry along a little
faster, and have guns. They do not always have their guns out: rather, they will
stop, take out their guns, and fire. If you shoot at one of them and he returns
fire, your shots cancel out and so you will have to shoot again.
Finally, you will sometimes see an enemy with a 'masked' tile power-up.
Shoot the prisoner, and the tile will continue to the left. Stand in front of it
and contact it when it shows up, and all prisoners currently crawling out of
their cells will go back.
The game does not end when the timer runs out, but rather if either the
timer runs out or your score matches the 'Clear' Score. Each prisoner is worth 5
points automatically.
------------
BUG-CATCHING
------------
In Bug-Catching, the middle of the three machines at the intermission,
Shin-chan is placed in between four bushes. When a bush rustles, one of four
types of bugs will wander out from one of the four directions. Rush after the
bug and press the A button to catch it.
Spiders are worth 5 points, the white large carapaced-bugs are worth 10,
the black large carapaced-bugs are worth 15, crickets are worth 20. Once you
grab the number of points needed for Clear (on the bottom right side of the bar)
before the time runs out, you win the mini-game.
----------------
PLAYGROUND SLIDE
----------------
In this mini-game, you get a demonstration by your white dog, who will
slide down a playground elephant slide (amusingly enough, this exact slide was
present in the first Crayon Shin-Chan Game Boy game) and grab a Shin-chan doll
for a 1-Up. In later levels, there will be added parts to the mini-game, such as
a spring to land on after jumping off from the slide. This demonstration also
shows precisely where the button prompts will be.
Once the demonstration is over, you as Shin-chan need to replicate the
performance. To be precise, you need to press the A button ONLY once, and you
need to press the A button near the end of when the button prompt is on-screen.
For example, with the slide, do NOT press the A button as soon as the button
prompt is shown on-screen, but rather just before Shin-chan leaves the slide.
