1. Introduction
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Battleships is one of te most popular tabletop games in the history
of tabletop games. It's fun for all the family, and it's been
translated into countless video games, many of which were not up to
standard. 'Battleship' for Sega's handheld, the 'Gamegear' was one of
the funnest and most enjoyable Battleship variations I have ever
played, and so I write this rather short FAQ to help anyone who may
be stuck at any place during the game.

2. Controls
-=-=-=-=-=-

On the menus, the D pad is to highlight your selection, and start
is the select button. Other than menu controls, there are two parts
to a game, each with it's own set of controls. When you set up your
ships, use the D pad to move the ship about and button 1 to rotate
it. When you finally get the ship to where you want it, press button
2 to set it in place. As soon as you do this, the next ship you have
to place will appear on screen. There are four ships each player.

After setting up your ships, the game carries to to battle mode.
This is the main part of the game, where you have to sink your
opponent's ships. Use the D pad to highlight a square and press
button 1 to send a missile at that square. If it is a hit, it shows
up red, and if it is a miss, it goes a dark shade of blue. Pressing
button 2 bring up a submenu where you can pick the sort of missile
you wish to use. Some missiles can hit more than one square at once,
but you only have a limited supply of these. While this menu is open,
use the D pad up and down to select your missile type, then button 2
to return to the game.Once you make your move, the game shows your
side of the board, where you set up your ships. The square your
opponent fires at will go red if it hits a ship, and blue if it
misses.

3. Main Menu
-=-=-=-=-=-=

After you boot up the game, you are shown all the game's copyright
information and game developer's logos etc. Then you will be taken
to the start screen, where, obviously, you press the Start button
to proceed.

Then you are taken to the main menu. On this screen, there are two
options available to you. The first is the 'start game' option which
is used for starting a new game, that's not had a password entered
for.

The second option is for you to enter any four digit passwords you
were given by the game after a battle is over. Head over to the
Passwords section (section 7) for more details.

4. How to play Battleships
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

In the game of battleships, you have to sink all of your opponent's
ships, which you cannot see. Similarly, you can see your ships, but
your opponent cannot. Each side of the board has a grid system on
it, and you call out a grid reference of your oppoenents grid. If
you guessed a grid reference where part of one of his ships is, you
mark on a bit of paper (or an extra grid representing his) where you
scored or missed. You should also make a note if you didn't guess
correctly, so you don't use the same square twice.
When a whole one of his ships (or yours) is hit, it is removed from
play. The first person to remove, or sink, his/her opponents ships
wins the game.

TIPS FOR SETTING UP YOUR BATTLE SHIPS:

   1. Don't put them all in a cluster on one corner of the board.
By doing this, you are practically telling the enemy where
      your ships are.

   2. Don't put all your ships in a straight line. If you do this,
and the enemy hits one square, no matter which way he/she
decides to hit next, it will guaranteed to by a hit.

   3. Use the small 2 squared ship to your advantage. Because it is
smaller than the rest of your ships, it is less likely to
be sunk by an enemy missile.

   4. This seems obvious, but don't let your opponent see all your
ships and where they are positioned. Even if they haven't
seen the exact square, they'll know roughly which direction
      to aim their missile for.

5. Different Weapons
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

You are given the choice to use different types of weapon in this
game of battleships. You only get one or two chances with each
special weapon before they are used up. You will always be able to
hit one square at a time. This is not used up.

Rim-666
-------                   _
1 square hit             |_|

This type of missile is your average missile. It's all you have left
when your other missiles are used up, so you're pretty much stuck
with it!

Battleship Tomahawk
-------------------       _     _
6 square hit             |_|_ _|_|
                         _|_|_|_
                        |_|   |_|

This covers the largets amount of squares out of all the available
missiles. It is probably saved for later on in the battle, although
it's also a good idea to use it as the first missile you fire in
the battle.

Cruiser Seadart
---------------           _   _
5 square hit             |_|_|_|
                         _|_|_
                        |_| |_|

This five block missile is one of my favourites. It covers a big
enough area, but you only get one of them, so use it wisely.

Destroyer ASROC-71
------------------        _       _
4 square hit             |_|     |_|
                        |_|     |_|

As far as I'm concerned, this particular missile is nothing except
useless. Why would you want a missile that has a huge gap in the
middle. I recommend you never use this, as it is too unreliable.

Frigate Polaris
---------------           _   _
4 square hit             |_| |_|
                         _   _
                        |_| |_|

This is a moderately good missile with it's four sqaures. It's good
for finding out which way an enemy ship is pointing, because it hits
each corner of your target. However, it's useless if the ship you
are aiming for is in the middle, where it's safe from this missile.

6. Winning a Game
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Every time you win or lose a battle, a screen comes up displaying
the following information. This is just an example.

          --------------------------------
          |        BATTLE REPORT         |
          |                              |
          |   YOU HAVE WON BATTLE 1-1    |
          |                              |
          |   FRIENDLY          FOE      |
          |                              |
          |   SHOTS 51       SHOTS 50    |
          |    HITS 14        HITS 11    |
          |  ACCUR 27%      ACCUR 22%    |
          |                              |
          |          PASSWORD            |
          |            9946              |
          |______________________________|

You then press start to start the next battle. If you want to quit,
just turn the system off.

7. Passwords and how to use them
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

You get a password once you win or lose a game. To enter your
password, select password from the main menu. Use the d pad up and
down to input the value, and left and right to move between the four
digits. When you are finished, press start then you will be taken to
the battle report screen where you recieved your last password. Then
proceed through the game as normal.
