[ASTR]
Asteroids is the port of the classic 1979 game designed by Lyle Rains
and Ed Logg. The basic game scheme is of a static-screen shooter where you can
move your ship all around the screen, where you have to fire at large asteroids
and UFOs that threaten to destroy your ship.
As just mentioned, your ship can move all across the screen - when you
go across a border, you will reappear on the side of the screen that is
perpendicularly opposite from where you disappeared off of (not parallel). The
ship will also display a measure of Newtonian mechanics - when you stop with the
ship's thrust, it will still continue to drift for a short while before
stopping. Additionally, if you try to turn directions while moving, you will get
a bit of awkward turning before you succeed in changing directions.
You can also turn your ship around while static or moving through use of
the Left and Right button. Once again Newtonian mechanics applies a little bit
here - your ship will continue turning a slight bit after you stop applying
thrust. Your ship also has a limited number of angles it can turn at - eight -
so you will often find that you are not facing the exact direction you may
desire.
Lastly, your ship also has the ability to go into 'hyperspace' - this
causes it to temporarily disappear off the screen for a few seconds, before
reappearing on a random location somewhere else on the screen a couple of
seconds later. Note that this is entirely random, so you may land over an
asteroid or UFO.
Knowing the abilities and limitations of your ship are important - as at
the start of the game, you will have several large asteroids coming off the
borders of the screens. If even one hits your, your ship is toast. To destroy an
asteroid, you need to fire it. At this point, it will break into two smaller
asteroids, each of which will break into two further small asteroids, before
finally being destroyed. You need to shoot each of these further asteroids to
clear them out.
As each asteroid gets split, however, the smaller asteroids will move
faster, and because they are smaller, they can also be more difficult to keep an
eye on as well as to shoot. It is recommended that you focus on taking out
smaller asteroids instead of just nilly-willy shooting all the larger asteroids
first, or else it can become a headache quickly. Once you clear out all the
asteroids, a new wave of asteroids will pop up on screen.
Dodge asteroids by thrusting out of the way when needed. If you think
you will not be able to dodge an asteroid, use the Hyperspace button - although
you may randomly land on a UFO, it is better taking your chances in this case.
Finally, you shall get the occasional UFO. The small UFOs will fire
directly at your ship, while the larger UFOs will just wander about. If you
destroy every asteroid except for one, you can wait for UFOs to come around and
eliminate them to run up your score.

Alternatively, if you ever order any items from Amazon.com, go to the
link below. You do not have to buy anything right away, but (if you do not clear
browser cookies often) any items you buy within the next 90 days will count as a
'referral order' to me, meaning I get anywhere from 4-6% as a referral/affiliate
payment of what you ordered (ie. order $100 worth of stuff, I get $4-6 from
Amazon.com)

Other than that, considering this FAQ is for an obscure old game, if you
have any other obscure old games that you do not play anymore, consider sending
them to me (I will even pay the shipping cost!). I write FAQs for plenty of
obscure old games with no FAQs, and having a physical copy of the game (and even
better, a manual) is superior to not. You can email me if interested at

Although I believe I have found everything there is to find in this
game, there is occasionally the possibility of some super secret level in an
obscure game that was never found because it was too obscure, or the like. If
you have anything that you feel needs to be includes, feel free to email me at
