\ 1. INTRODUCTION /
\_______________/
Hello and welcome to my FAQ for the Game Boy game, Alleyway. This is
my first FAQ, so please bear with me if I make any errors. I wrote
this FAQ because there is only one FAQ for this game and I know a lot
about it. Well whatever... here's what you want... the FAQ for
Alleyway!
/----------------------------------------------------------------------\
\----------------------------------------------------------------------/
\ 2. VERSION / UPDATES /
\____________________/
- Version 1.0 - March 11, 2002 - This is the first version of the FAQ,
so there's not really much to say here. Just enjoy the FAQ!
- Version 1.1 - March 1-, 2002 - I added normal levels 10-12, and
13-15. Added up to Bonus Level 4. Also I changed my e-mail address
as the other one didn't work anymore (@_@).
/----------------------------------------------------------------------\
\----------------------------------------------------------------------/
\ 3. BASICS /
\_________/
__________
/ A. ABOUT \ Alleyway had it's first and only release for the
\__________/ original black and white (or green) Nintendo Game Boy.
I'm not sure who it was created by, but it was produced and liscenced
by Nintendo. Apparently, it didn't sell very well, as no sequels were
made. But, anyway I think it is a very good game and was completely
under-rated and overlooked. But that's just my opinion...
_________
/ B. GOAL \ The goal of Alleyway is very simple, even though trying
\_________/ to complete this sole objective may be very hard or even
next to impossible. The object of the game is to get rid of all of
the blocks. You play Mario in a cylinder shaped floating machine
thingy. You have to move your machine back and forth to hit a ball
around the level to destroy the blocks in the level. You have to
destroy all of the blocks in the level (without letting the ball get
by you or you will lose a life) to move onto the next level. The layout
of Alleyway is much easier shown than told, so I recommend that you
just go out and buy this game as you should be able to buy it for
approximatly 5 to 15 dollars.
_____________
/ C. CONTROLS \ The controls of Alleyway are incredibly simple and
\_____________/ pretty easy to get the hang of. They are as follows:
control pad - press it to the left and right to move your bar-shaped
machine left and right (it cannot move up or down)
Start button - start a game while on the title screen or puase the
game while in the middle of gameplay
Select button - not used
A button - fire a new ball at the start of a game or after losing a
life or hold the A button during gameplay for your machine to move
faster
B button - hold the B button during gameplay for your machine to move
slower
_________
/ D. INFO \ Okay... now for some basic info on the game. The default
\_________/ high score is 200 points. You start with 4 lives. To get
an extra live, score 1000 points. You play 3 normal levels then a
bonus level. High scores are not saved. I dont know how many levels
are in this game, as I have never reached the end.
/----------------------------------------------------------------------\
\----------------------------------------------------------------------/
\ 4. HOW TO PLAY /
\______________/
Alleyway is very simple to play, but I'll walk you through it anyway,
as this is an FAQ. When you first load up the game, you will see the
title screen. You see the title of the game, Alleyway, the top score
(which is useless since it doesn't save when the game turns off)(the
default score is 200, which is very easy to beat by the way), something
that says "PUSH START KEY", which obviously means that you push start
to start the game. The last thing on the title screen is the copyright,
which is 1989, NINTENDO.
Okay, after we press start, we see Mario walk to his machine then jump
in. On the right side of the screen, we see "TOP", this is the top
score. Next, we see "SCORE", this is your current score. Then, we see
"STAGE 01", this is also very obviously what is says it is, the stage
that you are currently on. The last thing that we see on the right
side of the screen is a little head, which is Mario's by the way, an
"X" and a number (when you start, it is 4). This is the number of
lives that you currently have.
Now, let's get into actual gameplay. First, you can move your machine
left and right to set it up for the ball. I would recommend placing it
as close to the middle as possible, as you can use that to set up a
strategie that i will discuss later in this document. When you press
the "A" button, the ball will launch out of the air. It will come at
an angle so that it is coming from the opposite side of the screen as
your machine is. When the ball comes, it will come strait at your
machine. Do not move the bar, I repeat, beginners, do not move the
bar. The ball will hit your bar (from here on in I will refer to it as
a bar) and bounce off in an opposite angle. To complete the level,
just keep on hitting the ball onto the bar and back into the blocks.
/----------------------------------------------------------------------\
\----------------------------------------------------------------------/
\ 5. NORMAL LEVELS /
\________________/
This part of the guide is to describe the normal levels of the game (in
other words, not the bonus levels)As I have stated before in this FAQ,
I do not know hao many levels there are in this game. There may be
unlimited but I don't know. All I know is that I have is never reached
the end (if it exists?). Now some info about the level guides.
- Grey blocks are worth one point - In the guide they will be
represented as a "|"
- Yellow blocks are worth two points - In the guide they will be
represented as a "-"
- Black blocks are worth three points - In the guide they will be
represented as a "="
- Unbreakable blocks cant be destroyed - In the guide, they will be
represented as a "*"
- In the game, all of the blocks look alike, but I can't do that on the
computer
_______________

| | | | | | | | | | | | the top, eventually. The speed
| | | | | | | | | | | | that they move down is based on

bar not actual time passed.

\ 6. BONUS LEVELS /
\_______________/
This section of the FAQ is for the bonus levels. You reach a bonus
level after beating 3 levels of normal play. The bonus levels play a
little differently than the other levels. First of all, you cannot
lose a life here. There is also a time limit, when the time is up, you
will go back to the normal stages. The main difference is that the ball
goes right through the blocks instead of bouncing off of them. If you
clear the level (get rid of all of the blocks) you will get a special
bonus. The amount of bonus points is different for every level, as is
the time limit.
