1.1 What is Yakuman DS?
Yakuman DS is a
Mah Jong game for the Nintendo DS. It is produced by Nintendo itself,
benfactors such games as Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, and
Super Smash Bros.. Mah Jong is a traditional game that came from China.
So
far so good?
There are literally thousands of different Mah Jong games, and
there may be a thousand individual digital versions, that is, those versions
that do not involve playing with tangible, touchable, swishing, twitching
tiles. What makes Yakuman DS so special among them?
First of all, at the
time of this writing, it is one of only two Mah Jong games available for the
Nintendo DS - a revolutionary gaming system that features a touch-screen
interface, making it one of the most viable vehicles for the game of Mah Jong.
The DS also features wireless multiplayer support, and can host a game of four
DS-wielding players on a single cartridge.
Second, the game is hosted by Mario
Characters who are probably more pleasant than the cretins who run your local
Mah Jong parlor. Oh they're not? Well, they are more annoying, at least.
Though the mentality that you're a good Mario Bros. player means you'll be a
good Yakuman DS player is false, it is entirely true that beginners are
welcome. As far as I know, this is the most authentic version of Japanese Mah
Jong outside of..well..the real thing.
0.2 About Mah Jong rules and how
they're not here
Mah Jong is to game as English is to language.
0.3 Getting
started
Make sure your Nintendo DS is turned off when you put the game in the
upper-loading slot, label facing outward, golden electronic chips facing down.
Press the power button, wait a couple of seconds, touch the screen or press any
button and a menu should come up. Touch Mario's face, and then touch the
screen once again - a screen that says PRESS START should appear. At this
point, you can either press the START button, the screen, or the A button to
bring you to the main menu.
The next section will be mainly translation, and
will not be so timmy-friendly.
