August 23rd, 2008.
Huge update today, jumping from version 0.92 to 2.00. Not only have I now
completely listed all foods liked, which would have made for version 1.00, I
have jumped through to the final version, 2.00, listing every food disliked!
Over the past seven weeks, I have been forming this list through trial and
error, checking every food to each character to find their two liked and two
disliked foods. In all, this version adds 17 foods liked by characters and
110 foods disliked. This version also features some fixes to spelling and
some small changes to the formatting. I'm proud to say that, after all this
time, my first guide is now 100% complete.
Anyone looking to host this guide on their website, or any Prince of Tennis
fansite that wants to use this information, please read section 10.

Couple little updates today, thanks to emails from some observant readers!
Two months ago, Hushicho sent me an email to put an end to the mystery of
the two-kanji 350p food liked by Sengoku. The food is gyouza (餃子), a sort
of dumpling that comes in many varieties. Thanks, Hushicho! The second
e-mail to spur this update comes from Lina. Sent earlier this month, it
provides corrections to a number of the translations: Momoshiro's curious
yakisoba bread has been updated, Hukushi's confused "carrot or ginseng" has
been changed to carrot, and Muromachi's tomuyankun has been explained.

Wow. Long time since I've done anything on this. This isn't even a big
update, either, as I haven't played this game in quite some time. I've
recieved information for this guide from one mariote2000 and one Allen Leung.
Mariote2000 has found the food that Takeuchi R. likes and dislikes, which
are Spaghetti and Sushi respectively. Allen has found another food that
Sengoku likes - the two-letter 350p food I can't figure out the name of.

One step closer to completion. Thanks to the deductive reasoning of gamefaqs
poster crono98767, I now have one more food properly assigned to its eater.
"In Ackptoos food guide there is a question mark next to hot dog. So I used
my logic and thought where do they serve hot dogs? At baseball games. And
whos pastime is baseball? Its americas pastime. So I chose to feed the hot
dog to Smith and his level went up."

Since I accidentally found out that Ryoma drops a level when fed Inui Juice,
I decided to create a section for it. Although, the near uslessness of such
information means I don't think I'll ever bother to actively research other
foods, but I figure I may as well include such a section in my FAQ anyway.
While working on submitting this, I decided on version 0.9 to represent how
close I am to having it complete. Version 1.0 will have all the foods listed
and matched to all the characters. If I ever finish the Foods Characters
Hate section, the guide will then reach version 2.0.

Alright, got the guide looking how I want, and have everything I want in it.
Note that it is partially incomplete as I am missing the foods needed for
Smith and R. Takeuchi, and may be missing other things. Please contact me if
you find any errors, or if you find anything I've missed. That said, I'll
draw your attention to the 250P Hot Dog which I do not know who eats it, the
350P unknown food that I still do not know the proper spelling of nor the
tennis player who eats it, and lastly to the 2000P food which I know is spelt
トムヤンクン 'tomuyankun', but don't know what it is. For that 350P food
I mentioned, the '?' placeholder may be 仮 or 佼 or something entierly
different, and so I have no confidence in either 仮 or 佼. Again, please
contact me if you figure out these three, or anything else.

Finally getting around to making this guide worth putting on GameFAQs instead
of having it just sit on my hard drive.
Spent a painstaking amount of time this night getting it in a nice, easy to
read format. Not quite done by 2 in the morning, and am needing some sleep.

2) How it all Began
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sometime around early March, a topic appeared on the GameFAQs board requesting a
list of the foods in the game and a list of the characters who eat them. After
people learned how to post japanese text on the forums, someone started it off
by posting the list of foods he had gotten from a japanese fansite. This list
showed only the characters that ate the foods and the names of the foods, but
not the prices. While that was going on, I was busying myself by entering
Smith's shop numerous times and, without proper knowledge of the japanese
language nor of the japanese text program I was using, was attempting to record
all the foods, their prices, and even translate them. Once I had felt satisfied
with the job I had done, I posted a very incomplete version of my list, and
people were soon able to match the foods and prices in my list to the foods and
characters in the other list. However, matching the foods, I would find, didn't
work quite right.
I would soon find out that the foods on both lists only matched each other about
half the time. The reason for this is that in the list that matches foods with
characters, which was taken off of a japanese fansite, had changed in some
instances the lettering from katakana to hiragana or vice versa. What this
means is, while both lists accurately listed the foods (when spoken aloud), only
my list used the text as it had appeared in the game. So, although the other
list did have all the foods, since they were 'spelled' differently from those in
my list, one could not match up the foods in my list to those in the other list.
And so, I went to work correcting it.
Shortly after I started though, Archanch took it upon himself to combine parts
of the two lists to make one FAQ. Unfortunately, this meant he would use some
of my incomplete list which includes many japanese words with missing letters
(question marks as place holders for those that I couldn't find in my japanese
word processer). Also, it contained the error of the spelling changes, and so
his FAQ was almost useless. I kept at mine, and after a while, I had completed
it. But since he already had his up, I didn't feel right about pushing it out
with one of my own right after I had basically agreed to him using the info for
his own FAQ. However, months later, Tragic_Hero83 pointed out that Archanch's
FAQ was incomplete, and he asked for a complete one. And so, I figured I may as
well release mine now.
So here it is.

3) Basic Things You Might Like to Know
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Before I get on to explaining how to use the guide, I'm going to explain the
basics of Smith's shop, with emphasis on the Foods section only. Once you have
cleared the first Singles, the first Doubles, and the first Mix tournaments,
Smith's shop will appear as an option on the Main Menu just above "Solo Play".
Navigating Smith's shop requires the use of the touchscreen. The section of
Smith's shop in question is the one at the very left; a shelf that resembles a
grocery store's cooler, it has a neon sign above it depicting a sandwich and,
in English, with a white underline, the colorful neon word, "FOODS".
Clicking the shelf or sign will bring up a list of five randomly generated foods
available for you to purchase. In the top right of the touchscreen is your
current amout of points, the games currency. Each food is in japanese, and
each shows a cost in points. The middle right of the touchscreen is a button
that will take you back to Smith's Shop, and just below that is an arrow that
lets you scroll down to see the fifth food. When you click on a food, the game
asks if you want to buy it ("yes" in blue, "no" in red).
Choosing yes takes you to a list of all the characters you have unlocked. You
will find under the picture of the character a sign that reads "Character Level"
and a rank of either Low, Middle, or High. This is a representation of how well
they will play as you're computer-controlled doubles partner, should you choose
them. On this screen, there is another "back" button which will take you to the
list of foods again. There is also another "scroll" arrow, which lets you
scroll through the list of Prince of Tennis' cast of characters. When you touch
one of the character's names, it asks you if it's alright to feed the chosen
food to that character, again with "yes" in blue, and "no" in red. Should you
choose no and then back out, you will not lose any points and the food will
remain on the shelf.

4) Advanced Things You Might Like to Know
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Feeding a character food can cause one of three things. Firstly, if it is one
of the foods the character likes, the character will rise a level. Secondly, if
the character is indifferent to the food, likes the food but is at High level,
or hates the food and is at Low level, they do not change level. Thirdly, if
you are to feed a character a food he or she hates, they will drop a level. An
example is feeding 乾汁 (Inui Juice) to Ryoma. After feeding a character, a
button labeled 'exit' shows up in the bottom right. Clicking this brings you
back to the list of available foods, now one less, and you may continue
buying the different foods. Should you feed something to a character and then
realise you would rather have not done so, you may do a soft reset
(L+R+Start+Select) at the point where you fed the character, at the foods list,
and at probably any other point within Smith's Shop. Once you leave the shop,
your point total is saved. Since this list is almost fully complete, and since
money is likely not much of an issue at this point of the game, such a trick
may not be important to know at all. Note also that doing this soft reset does
not save whatever food you just purchased, every time you enter Smith's shop a
new random set of five foods is generated.
Now, why would you want to spend points on this? Well, having a higher-level
partner is extremely helpful when playing through the doubles and mix
tournaments. More interestingly though, is the fact that after getting only
twenty characters to HIGH level, you unlock Inui's voice card for purchase.
Now, on to explaining how to use this guide...

5) How to Use This Guide
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Firstly, let me begin by saying that this guide makes heavy use of japanese text
which it would, of course, be impossible to make without. In order to view
japanese text in this document, you must change your encoding to Japanese. To
do this, assuming you're using Internet Explorer or a similar browser, click the
toolbar menu "View", scroll to "Encoding", and select "Japanese(Shift-JIS)".
You may need to first download the fonts, if you're operating system does not
already have them installed.
Now, using this guide is fairly straight forward. If what you want to do is to
match one of the foods available ingame to a character, what you do is check the
in-game price of the food, match it to the food in "6) Foods as Listed by Cost",
then match the food to the character in "7) Characters as Listed by School".
All you do is use the "find" command (CTRL-F), copy and paste the japanese word
for the food into the "find" window, and then use it. It'll show you right away
one of the characters that eat the food... press it again to move to the next
character that will eat it.
If what you want to do is find out the foods that a certain character will eat,
go to the character as listed in section 6, and use find to search for the
price of the foods one at a time, making sure to change the direction of the
search to "up".
It's easier than I make it sound.
My guide uses the exact prices and the exact spelling for all foods as they are
in the actual game. The japanese spelling for the character names has been
checked by myself. In updating this guide to version 2.00, I can say with
certainty that every food I say is liked is liked and every food I say is
disliked is disliked. I checked every single one.
For fun, and to make the guide more 'in depth', I have tossed in translations of
many of the foods. That way, you can know what it really is you are feeding to
your favorite little tennis players. If you find any of my translations to be
incorrect, be it the food or the character names, send me an e-mail and I'll
address the mistake.

Being one of Ryoma's favorite foods in this game, it's clear that this is
the "Ponta" soda Ryoma is often seen buying from vending machines.
** yakisoba pan
Yakisoba pan, or "yakisoba bread", is basically bread with yakisoba
(fried noodles) in it.
*** croquette
A small cake of minced food, such as poultry, vegetables, or fish, that is
usually coated with bread crumbs and fried in deep fat.
**** okonomiyaki
pizza-like pancake fried with various ingredients.
***** pot-au-feu
A French dish of boiled meats and vegetables.
****** gengisukan
A Dish With Mutton and Vegetables.
******* yakiniku
A type of (or the word for) a Korean BBQ.
******** tomuyankun
A kind of soup with a lot of sea food included in it.
********* durian
Name of a tree from southeastern Asia, having edible oval fruit with a hard
spiny rind, also the name of the huge fruit from the tree. The fruit is said
to 'smell like Hell and taste like Heaven'; the seeds are roasted and eaten
like nuts. ドリアン, the only food in this game that is not liked by even one
of the characters.

characters will cause them to actually drop in level. This feature's pretty
much useless, gameplay-wise, but it makes for some nice tidbits of trivial
