Sunday X Magazine Nettou! Dream Nine
-----------------------
Introduction
-----------------------
This is the first guide I've submitted to GameFAQs, so excuse it for being a
little vanilla. There are a ton of great Japanese Nintendo DS releases that
never make it to America. Even so, DS games are region free, so everyone
has a chance to enjoy them. I hope this guide can clear up some problems
that people who don't understand a lot of Japanese have with this game.
Sunday X Magazine Nettou! Dream Nine is a baseball game that uses the
exceptional gameplay of Konami's Power Pro-kun series to bring tons of
characters from the Shonen Sunday and Shonen Magazine publications
together. This includes a number of classic baseball comics like Major
and H2, as well as non-baseball comics that have gained a lot of popularity
around the world like Hajime no Ippo and Ranma 1/2.
If you're interested in this game because some of your favorite comic books
are represented, please check out the character list (towards the end of
this guide) to see if your favorite characters are in the game. It took me a
little while to write out all of the names in roman letters because I'm not
familiar with most of these comics, so I hope it ends up being of use to
someone.
If anyone who does know some Japanese is reading this and saying
"Hey, I know that word, that's not the right translation!" it's because I don't
translate things literally all the time. This makes it easier for people who
don't know a single word of Japanese to understand things.

At the start of the game you'll see 6 menu options (one of which will be
covered by a question mark). From left-to-right, top-to-bottom they are:

-----------------------
Configuration Menu
-----------------------
There are some configuration options you see before certain games
(like exhibition matches) or that you can change between tournament
rounds. You can also access this menu during a game by pausing and
selecting the third option. From left-to-right, top-to-bottom they are:
Hitting: During tournaments this will be manual, you can change it to
automatic for exhibition games.
Defense: During tournaments this will be set to semi-automatic.
Pitching: During tournaments this will be manual, you can change it to
automatic for exhibition games.
Base Running: During tournaments this will be set to semi-automatic.
Coach: During tournaments this will be manual, you can change it to
automatic for exhibition games. When set to automatic, the computer will
make player substitutions for you.
Ball Landing Position: This will show you exactly where a ball is going to
land when it is hit. Default is a single cursor. (other options are a circle
cursor which also indicates ball distance, or no indication)
-----------------------
Pause Screens
-----------------------
There are two in-game pause screens. If you pause while you are pitching
you'll have these options:
Continue
Substitute (bring in substitute players)
Configuration Menu
Quit to Menu
If you pause while you are batting, you get these options:

3. Modes
_______________________________________________________
-----------------------
1. Main Stadium
-----------------------
The main stadium mode is where you can participate in tournaments
against the computer. Every time you win a game in this mode, the
characters you use will grow closer to awakening (more on that later).
There should only be one option at the beginning (start a new tournament),
but if you are in the middle of a tournament you'll be presented with the
option to continue. The second option will be to start a new tournament.
Once you start a new tournament, you'll be prompted with two more
options, one yellow and one red. The top is the championship tournament,
and the bottom is the champion tournament (a bit confusing, I know).
Championship Tournament (Yellow Option): After selecting this
tournament you'll be taken to the team select screen. At the beginning
you only have access to 12 teams, 6 from either the Shonen Sunday
(on the left) or Shonen Magazine (on the right) publications. After defeating
a team, you will unlock that team's story for the story mode. After
successfully winning all the matches in this tournament, you'll unlock the
corresponding magazine's All-Star team.
During this tournament, you'll play 6 games. The first three will be only 3
innings long. The next two will be 6 innings long, the second of which will
pit you against your publication's All-Star team (so if you chose Shonen
Sunday, you'll face the Sunday All-Stars). The final game will be a full 9
innings against a team from the opposite publication (so if you are using
a Shonen Sunday team, you'll face a Shonen Magazine team).
If you lose a game during this tournament, you'll be given the option to retry,
if you choose not to you'll be taken back to the title screen. Every time you
win a game you'll be given three options. The first is to continue to the next
round, the second is to change the game options, and the third is to save
your game.
Champion Tournament (Red Option): After selecting this tournament, you'll
be prompted to create your own team to use in the tournament. You will
only be able to create a team using characters you've unlocked. This
includes teams that you've completed the Championship Tournament with,
as well as any support characters you've unlocked. The team roster will
look like this to begin with:
(Lefthand Column)
1. Pitcher
2. Catcher
3. First Baseman
4. Second Baseman
5. Third Basemen
6. Shortstop
7. Left Fielder
8. Center Fielder
9. Right Fielder
Support Character
The righthand column will be your substitutes. If you want to modify the
batting order after selecting positions for your team, just highlight a
character and move them to the number you want them to appear. Their
fielding position will automatically go with them, so you don't need to shuffle
things around.
You will play 5 games during this tournament, and the teams you face will
always be the same. The first 3 games will be 6 innings long. The last 2
games will be a full 9 innings. If you lose even one match, you will have to
start all over. The between-game options are the same as the
Championship tournament, but 'save' will be replaced by 'save and quit'.$
-----------------------
2. Story
-----------------------
When you select the story mode, you'll be given a choice of which
magazine you want to play a story for. Next you'll have to pick which comic's
story to play through. The stories are divided into chapters. Each chapter
begins with a little graphic novel, and eventually you will have to play out
one of the scenes from the comic. Some chapters have only one scene to
play, and others have up to three. The requirements for completing each
scene are different, and it is possible to get a 'Clear' grade or a 'Best Clear'
grade on the scene. You are only required to get the normal 'Clear' grade to
complete each story, but you will unlock an extra character if you complete
all scenes with 'Best Clear' grades.

3. Homerun Derby
-----------------------
In this mode you will be thrown 10 pitches, all aimed directly at your bat's
sweet spot (so you don't need to move, only swing). The batter who hits the
most home runs and hits the farthest distance will be put on the
scoreboard. Just select which batter you want to use and play.
-----------------------
4. Exhibition Match
-----------------------
Here you can play a free match against the computer or a friend using any
team. There are three options, the green is a game versus the computer,
the red is a game versus a friend (using wireless connection), and the
yellow is to edit a team for your own use. In the team select, choose
'Original Team' to use the team you've created in the edit (yellow) option.
Note: the 'edit' team you make here is NOT the same as the edit team you
use for the champion tournament.
Exhibition Match Options (left-to-right, top-to-bottom)
Errors: Default ON
Called Game: Default OFF (set how many points necessary to have the
game called off)
Innings: Default 9
Difficulty: Default NORMAL (others are red-strong, purple-powerful,
black-strongest, green-weak)
Extra Innings: Default MAX 12 innings (others are 15 innings or no extra)
Batting: Default NORMAL
-----------------------
5. Practice
-----------------------
In this mode you can practice the game's controls and train against
different situations. The choices for training from left-to-right, top-to-
bottom are hitting, pitching, base-running, and defense (fielding).
The small option at the bottom is to configure the game options for the
practice mode.
-----------------------
6. Option
-----------------------
There are 4 different options here. The first (red) is data for all of the
characters you've unlocked. The second is a little demo of how to play the
game. The 3rd (purple) is sound options. The 4th (grey) is to reset all of
your data.
Sound Options:
BGM Volume
Stadium BGM (music that plays during a game)
Sound Effects Volume
Voice Volume
Croud Volume

4. Controls
_______________________________________________________
If you are unfimilar with the Power Pro series, these are the basic controls
for the game. If you've already played a Power Pro game before, just know
that this game has a 'special bar' that you can use to activate special hits,
pitches, and fielding throws. The bar will go up when you get get a hit,
score a run, get an out, or a strikeout. Special pitches and hits take 1 full
stock of this bar to execute but you can store up to 3 stocks total.
-----------------------
Batting
-----------------------
D-pad Left/Right: Move batter closer/farther to Home Plate
D-pad Up/Down: Move the batting cursor up and down
B: Swing
A: Hold to Bunt, and use D-pad to change angle of the bat
Y: Recenter batting cursor (or stall when cursor is already centered)
R: Activate special bar (uses 1 special stock if you hit the ball)
To command base-runners:
X OR Y+Direction to run (so if you have a runner on first and you want him
to steal 2nd, press X+up)
-----------------------
Pitching
-----------------------
D-pad: Choose a pitch
B: Throw a pitch, and use the D-pad to change the target of the pitch.
To catch early runners off guard-
A: Throw to first base
X: Throw to second base
Y: Throw to third base
R: Activate special bar (takes 1 special stock if you throw the pitch)
-----------------------
Base Running
-----------------------
Y+Direction to run: advance runner (so to advance a runner from 1st to 2nd,
press Y+up)
B+Direction to run: retreat runner

5. Reading Player Statistics
_______________________________________________________
The Character data screen in the options is the only place you can see a
character's full data. In all other places (including team editing) you'll get a
shortened version. This is based on the information from the character
data screen.
There are four different sets of information you can see for each character,
press X or Y to change sets. They are Pitching Information, Player
Information, Special Techniques and Skills, and Support Information.
All characters will have their portrait, name (the orange bar), and
handedness (the black bar). If there is a little red line and some wording
underneath a character's portrait it means they have 'awakened'. An
awakened character is one who has been used a lot and as a result, gets
an increase in statistics. It's very beneficial to have awakened characters,
so be sure to train everyone.
All characters will also have a set of data that tells their coordination (a
number) and what type of player they are (pitcher or fielder). This appears
on both the pitching information and player information screens.
Coordination is a player's general effectiveness, so a higher number usually
means a better player. The player types are pitcher (purple), fielder (green),
or both (green/purple).
Rankings- Most statistics in the game are summed up by letter rankings. A
is the highest, and G is the lowest.
-----------------------
Pitching Information
-----------------------
Only pitchers will have pitching information. At the top of the pitching
information screen there will be a chart with arrows and some letters, as
well as a speed in km/h. The speed is that character's pitching speed
(obviously), and the arrows show the commands for that character's
pitches. You don't need to memorize this chart because you'll see it every
time you pitch during the game.
On the bottom part of the screen you'll see two gray boxes with letters and
some orange boxes on the right. The gray boxes are for Control and
Stamina. Control is how well the pitcher can hit the target you choose
(on average). Stamina is how well your pitcher can keep from getting tired.
The orange boxes give the specifics of each of this character's pitches. It
will have the name of the pitch, the command direction, and a ranking of
how well that character can use that pitch. The better ranking a pitch, the
more effective it will be (so an A-ranked curve ball will curve a lot more than
a D-ranked curve ball).
-----------------------
Player Information
-----------------------
This is detailed information for all of the character's statistics. On the top
of the screen you'll see 3 letters. The first corresponds to the character's
average offense rank (batting), the second is their running speed, and the
third is their defense (fielding).
On the lower part of the screen you'll see a box with an arrow in it on the
left. That's the player's batting trajectory. This is the natural direction that
the ball will waver from its straight path when they hit it through the air.
Poor batters will have the most extreme trajectory (a 1).
To the right of the trajectory there are 6 boxes with average ranks and
numbers. They are as follows (from left-to-right, top-to-bottom):
Batting Cursor: Also known as the 'meet cursor' this is the size of the cursor
that appears when you are batting.
Arm Strength: This is for throwing the ball, naturally it will be higher for
pitchers.
Power: Strength of batting.
Defense: Average fielding technique.
Running: Running Speed.
Error Protection: Probability of committing errors (higher rank is better)
-----------------------
Special Skills
-----------------------
The top of this screen shows three different boxes. The long one on top
shows a player's special batting skill. The box below that on the left is the
player's special pitching skill (obviously only pitchers will have these).
To the right of that is a fielding skill. There are only 2 fielding skills, and
only certain characters have them. One is laser-beam and the other is
super laser-beam. Both are super-fast throws from the outfield that are
very useful for defense.
Below that information are several boxes. These represent the
character's skills. I can't list them all here, but generally know that orange
and red skills are good and blue skills are bad. Pitchers usually have more
skills than other players, and the majority of those will be pitching skills.
During the game, only skills in effect will appear at the bottom of the
screen when a player is pitching/batting. Certain skills appear or
disappear depending on the situation, so keep an eye out for them to get
the most out of your players.
-----------------------
Support
-----------------------
The final screen is only for support characters, whose player type (the box
in the upper right) will appear as gold. The two letters at the top of this
screen correspond to effect strength and appearance. During a match, this
support character will randomly appear to give your character a stat boost.
The first letter is an approximation of the strength of this effect. A higher
rank will mean the character gains better stats. The second letter shows
how often during the match this support character will appear to give their
effect. Usually support characters with strong effects will have a low
probability of appearing.
The box at the bottom has the name of the team that this support character
will appear for the most. The only 2 support characters that aren't really
obvious are Negi from Mahou Sensei Nagima! who is best with the Shonen
Magazine All-Stars, and Nagi from Hayate no Gotoku!, who is best with the
Shonen Sunday All-Stars.

Story Mode:
Defeat the team you want the story for in the Championship Tournament
mode. Winning a game with a team also unlocks that comic's story.

Unlock a team for use in the Champion Tournament edit team:
Win the Championship Tournament with the team you want
-----------------------
Unlocking Characters
-----------------------
The majority of the 10 basic teams are already unlocked at the beginning
of the game. Completing each team's story mode will give you ONE more
character (usually a support character) for that team. Completing each
team's story mode with ALL Best Clears will give you another character.
Many of the supplementary characters (who don't have a full team) belong
to either of the All Star teams. You will unlock those characters after
unlocking their respective team.
All other characters are unlocked by winning the Champion Tournament.
You have to defeat all 5 teams in the Champion Tournament to unlock the
characters.

A Final Note:
If you found this guide on any website other than GameFAQs.com, go
check out

more professional and extensive than the gaming site you're using right
now. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, just post a mess
age on gamefaqs' Sunday X Magazine Nettou! Dream Nine message
board. All posts to that board are archived, which means I'll see it one day
or another.
