-----------------------------
1. Introduction
-----------------------------
Well, it was a close one, but Kunio-Kun has risen from the dead once again.
Kunio-kun, main character of one of the most beloved series of games of all
time, makes his return with this remake of "Downtown Nekketsu Koushinkyoku:
Soreyuke Daiundoukai".

As with all my guides, I hope that those out there who can't read Japanese
will be able to enjoy this game just as much as if they could. In this
initial release I hope to get the majority of the information down. Feedback
is always welcome.

------------------
Super-Mini Review
------------------
Kunio-kun, of River City Ransom and Super Dodgeball fame, finally makes the
leap into 3D with this remake. While the original gameplay hasn't suffered
immensely from the new graphics, it's sort of sad to see the original
lovable characters be mutated into a big polygonal mess.

Ugliness aside, this remake captures the gameplay of the original very well,
and manages to add several new elements effectively. For one, stages have
been redesigned and expanded upon, so this isn't a strict remake. In
addition, the 'ball breaking' mode from the original game has been replaced
by a 'treasure hunt' battle, which is rather frustrating, but a good change
from the original event.

In terms of fan service, several new teams have been added, including a
girl's team which seems to be all the rage with Japanese players (girls are
somewhat of a rarity in this most manly of gaming series). There is also a
team edit mode, allowing you to create your own custom characters. This new
content is executed well, a welcome addition to the original, which I didn't
exactly love.

The one true downside of the game is that there are two control schemes:
the classic scheme (A+B = Jump), which proves to be very buggy, and a
new scheme, which suits the game well, but will be frustrating for fans
of the original. I haven't found the new scheme to be very oppressive, so
I urge old fans to keep an open mind... or suffer the bugged classic controls.

2. Controls
-----------------------------
This game features two control schemes, the classic Kunio-Kun control scheme,
and a new scheme designed to make the game easier. Fans of the other
Kunio-Kun games (River City Ransom, Super Dodgeball, etc.) will most likely
want to use the classic scheme, but even as a fan myself, I can say that the
new scheme has a few advantages, as well as disadvantages.

It's up to you which control scheme you use, the new controls for dashing are
less intuitive to long-time fans of the series, but the classic controls for
jumping are less responsive. Personally I prefer the new controls (it has
been rumored that there are many bugs with the classic controls).

The combat events (Treasure Hunt and Knockout Battle) have extra controls:

Combo Attack: Press any three attack buttons in succession. Certain
characters will knock opponents away on the third hit.

example:
Punch, Kick, Punch

Dash Attack: Press Punch or Kick while dashing, this motion is short and
doesn't cause you to dive like the dash attacks during the race events.

Special Attack: Certain characters have a special attack that activates
when you press the right button combination. The controls will appear
under the character's stats at the character select screen.

example:
Kunio's Mach Kick: Left/Right + Kick (kicks 3 times quickly)

Holding: You can grab, hold, throw, and attack with other characters,
just like you would with a weapon.
-To pick them up, press Punch while they are on the ground.
-You can then throw them with Kick, or attack with them with Punch.
-Throw enemies into walls, obstacles, or off ledges to do extra damage.

4. Gameplay Overview
------------------------
Daiundoukai includes four events, two races, and two of what I call
"combat events".

Each event is scored in a similar way, though the objectives of the events
are different. When you finish an event you'll be taken to a scoring screen:
*Rank
-Battle Bonus
-Time Bonus
-Rank Bonus

Your rank is where you placed in the event (first through fourth), and the
battle bonus score is a reflection of where you placed (better rank, higher
battle bonus). Time bonus will give you points based on how many seconds
are left on the clock when you win (doesn't apply if you are knocked out
or in treasure battles).

Even if you come in second or third place in an event, you can still get a
decent score. In tournament mode your total score for all four events will
be totaled to determine the winner, so don't give up even if you fail an
event miserably.

---------
Races
---------
Both races begin with a countdown. During the countdown you can move
freely, so you can position yourself to have a better racing line. Just
be sure not to cross the start line before the countdown reaches zero,
or you'll have your health penalized (the countdown will restart).

Cross Country Race:
In the cross country race, you'll run across a variety of terrain,
following the arrow markers on the course to the exit of each screen.
The order in which characters finish each screen determines who will
get to start the next section first, so it's always to your advantage to
finish a section first- especially the second to last section.

You can gain points by finishing each section in first place and damaging
other players, but you always score the most points by being the first to
cross the finish line.

Each section of the race has a number of tricks to it, and with practice
you'll find the best path to take and where it's most dangerous to be
attacked. General rules are:

-If you have the option between running up stairs or jumping up a ledge,
always take the ledge if your character can jump high. These are the best
shortcuts.

-If you have to climb a wall, make sure there are no opponents near you,
otherwise you'll be knocked away. Alternatively you can try to knock your
opponents away, but you don't want to waste too much time.

-Finish the second-to-last section in first place. That means you'll have
a little advantage in the last section.

-If the terrain is slowing you down (dirt path, water), JUMP. Jumping will
usually make you travel farther and faster than normal movement. Some
characters are better at swimming, so experiment to see which is best.

*Some portions of the race may be underwater. If you linger too long
you'll start to run out of breath, and then suffocate for a moment. To
keep this from happening you can touch the little bubbles that rise from
the floor.

Obstacle Course:
The obstacle course is the same as the cross country race, but the courses
are different and there are generally more things in the way to annoy you.
Obstacle courses usually pose a greater risk of taking damage from traps,
so make sure the character you use to run the race doesn't have low health.

--------------
Combat Events
--------------
Treasure Hunt:
The goal of the treasure hunt is to have the most points when the timer runs
out. You can get 3 points by hitting the treasure boxes that appear in the
arena, and you can steal a point from other players by hitting them when
they are off their feet.

Hitting a character while they are 'off their feet' so that you steal a
point has some specific rules. Power-type characters can knock characters
off their feet with the third hit of their combo attack, but other players
will have to use other means, such as grabbing and throwing the opponent,
or hitting them while they are in the air (such as when they are jumping).

Once a player is in that vulnerable state, you continue to combo them (and
steal another point for every time you hit) until they are back on their
feet. Use this to your advantage by throwing an enemy with a lot of points
into the corner and juggling them there.

Similarly, be careful not to get hit while you are in the air, as that will
cause your points to be stolen.

Because the the treasure hunt always goes until the timer runs out, you never
score any bonus points for time. Your score for this event is almost totally
determined by what place you come in, though you can pick up some extra points
for attacking other players.

A few hints:
-Watch the bottom screen for where the treasure chests appear. You always
want to be the first one to reach the chest.

-You can use weapons to open the treasure chests! Throw a weapon at a chest
if you know it's nearby, you might get lucky and hit enemies as well.

-If you have a lot of points, be careful to defend. You can easily lose a
ton of points by being juggled by your opponents.

-If the event looks hopeless, you can always try to score a few points by
beating on the other players. You can still get a decent score by placing
second.

Knockout Battle:
This event is a free-for-all fighting match. The goal is to be the last
player standing, or have the most health when the timer runs out. You'll
definitely want characters with high power, health, and defense (toughness)
for this event, as well as characters with good special moves. If you are
careful, this can be an easy event and score you a lot of points in a
tournament.

A few hints:
-Pick up your opponents! When an opponent is knocked down, you can go near
them and press 'punch' to pick them up. From there you can attack other
players by using them as a weapon (damages several opponents at once), or
throw them.

-Throw your opponents! After picking your opponents up, you can deal some
serious damage by throwing them into obstacles (like the wire fence in the
island arena), or off a ledge (like in the city arena). This is a good
way to weaken opponents with high defense.

-Roll away when knocked down. You can be pummeled to death quite easily
by getting caught in a corner. Roll away from opponents that knock you down
by pressing an attack button and the direction you want to roll away.

-------------------
5. Tournament Mode
-------------------

In the Tournament Mode, you select a team of your choice and battle through
all four events. The total score for all four events determines the winner.
If you complete a certain leg of the tournament (preliminaries, semi-finals,
or finals), you'll unlock the next leg of the tournament for the team you
chose. You'll unlock new teams by completing the finals with each team.

*Your team members will regain a little health between each event, so
make sure you don't use a character in danger of losing all their health.

*You begin by choosing a leg of the tournament. Depending on the leg, the
courses you play for the race events will change in length:

Preliminaries:
Cross Country- 10 sections
Obstacle Course- 6 sections

Semi-Finals:
Cross Country- 12 sections
Obstacle Course- 8 sections

Finals:
Cross Country- 14 sections
Obstacle Course- 8 sections

*Each leg is divided into two competitions, the first will be the city
courses, and the second will be the island courses. You don't get to save
inbetween these two competitions, so you'll have to finish 8 events in total
to advance in the game. Your progress will be saved after you complete both
the city and island competitions.

The arena for the combat events will change depending on which
competition you are in:

City Competition:
Treasure Hunt- Conveyor Belt room
Knockout Battle- Building ledge arena

Island Competition:
Treasure Hunt- Castle Screen room
Knockout Battle- Barbed wire/conveyor belt arena

*At the end of the second competition, individual characters will be rewarded
with special awards, giving you a chance to gain (or lose) some bonus
points:

Fighting Spirit Award = 150
MVP Award = 200
Worthless Award = -150
Atomic Bomber Award = 100
TCC Special Award = ???

*You will unlock new things for each leg of the tournament you complete
with each team. The rewards are:

Win a preliminary:
A new item/weapon is added to the game.

Win a semi-final:
The game notifies you that "****-stage has become a little busier!"
I'm not sure exactly what this means, but I think it might increase
the NPCs and other non-obstacle objects that appear in every stage.

Win a final:
Unlock a new team-

6. Challenge Mode
-------------------
Challenge mode serves a few purposes. The easy section of the challenge
mode is essentially a tutorial, taking you through the basic commands and
each of the four events.

The normal and difficult sections of the challenge mode are made up of
several different 'missions'. By completing the missions quickly and
effectively, you'll get a higher rank. You unlock new missions by getting
high ranks.

In addition, for each mission you complete (and the rank you complete it
with), you'll unlock points, customization parts, and special moves that
you can use to create your own team in the Team Edit mode.

Remember, you only unlock more points and items the first time you get a
rank, so once you have an 'A' rank on any given stage, there's no point
in playing it anymore (besides for fun, of course).

*There are only two ranks you can get on each mission, B, which is a
normal completion, and A, which has stricter requirements. The game
doesn't explicity say what those requirements are, but these are some
general guidelines:

-If the mission is to "defeat all enemies", the requirement for an A rank
is usually time. Try to finish the mission quicker until you get an A rank.

-If the mission is to "win the race", the requirement for an A rank is
usually to deplete your opponents' health before the finish line. These
are easily the most difficult missions to get an A rank on.

My trick to complete them is to single out one enemy in each room, knock
them down, and then toss them against a wall (this does the most damage).
As they are falling down the wall, hit them, and then pick them up before
they roll away again. Toss them against the wall again and repeat. It's
crude, but probably the safest method, especially if you are on a time
limit.

**As an added incentive for getting A ranks on all 35 missions (besides
having all 35 special moves available in edit mode), you are given a
full 999 points to distribute between stats for your edit mode characters.
This will allow you to create A and S rank characters, where you could
only make B rank characters before.

Mission List:
---------------------
This is the list of missions for each of the maps. Don't worry if you
can't access every mission at first, you'll unlock them by getting an A
rank in other missions.

---------------------
Easy (Tutorial) Map:
---------------------

Mission 1:
Move, Dash, and Stop dashing to complete!

Mission 2:
Do a punch combo and kick combo to complete!

Mission 3:
Do a jump, jump-kick, and jump-punch to complete!

Mission 4:
Do a dash punch and dash kick to complete!

Mission 5:
Pick up a weapon and do a weapon combo to complete!

Mission 6:
Throw a weapon to complete!

Mission 7:
Guard to complete!

Mission 8:
Do a flying attack and sliding attack to complete!

Mission 9:
Do a punch and kick while on the wall!

Mission 10:
Swim in the water!
Note: Just swim from one side of the little pool to the other, don't press
anything but the D-Pad.

Mission 11:
Swim underwater and suck in air!

Mission 12:
Win the treasure hunt!

Mission 13:
Win the knockout battle!

Mission 14:
Win the cross country race!

Mission 15:
Win the obstacle course race!

------------
Normal Map:
------------

Mission 1:
Defeat all enemies!

Mission 2:
Use a weapon to defeat all enemies!
Note: I had trouble getting A on this at first. Use the tire and
your character's D-Pad + Punch special move to take out the whole
crowd of enemies at once.

Mission 3:
Defeat the enemies by tossing them off the ledge!
Note: Your character's D-Pad + Punch special grabs a character and
punches them away. Face towards the ledge to knock them off easily.

Mission 4:
Win the obstacle course race!

Mission 5:
Defeat all enemies!

Mission 6:
Defeat all enemies!

Mission 7:
Defeat all enemies (everyone is nearly dead)!

Mission 8:
Defeat all enemies!

Mission 9:
Cross the finish line while holding an item!

Mission 10:
Defeat all enemies!

Mission 11:
Win the treasure hunt!

Mission 12:
Use the "weapon throw" to defeat all enemies!
Note: This character has a special move that activates when you
throw a weapon. Just stand near some weapons and throw them at
your enemies as fast as you can.

Mission 13:
Win the treasure hunt!
Note: The time limit for this mission is very long.

Mission 14:
Use weapons to defeat all enemies!

Mission 15:
Defeat all enemies!
Note: How cool is this? It's the fight with the Double Dragon brothers
from River City Ransom! It even has the Double Dragon theme, how
nostalgic!

---------------
Difficult Map:
---------------

Mission 1:
Defeat all enemies (everyone is nearly dead)!

Mission 2:
Use a weapon to defeat all enemies!
Note: This is a treasure hunt stage, but to get an A rank, you need
to defeat all of the enemies.

Mission 3:
Cross the finish line while holding an item!
Note: If you are going for an A rank, REMEMBER TO PICK UP AN ITEM
before finishing. I forgot once and was pretty upset after all
the effort.

Mission 4:
Defeat all enemies before crossing the finish line!
Note: This might sound hard if you've never done it before. Do the
best you can, and then finish anyone left in that last section by
keeping them trapped by the bamboo spikes.

Mission 5:
Defeat all enemies!

Mission 6:
Win the obstacle course race!

Mission 7:
Defeat all enemies before crossing the finish line!
Note: This one is a serious pain because your character is slower
than the others. Try to get near the end of screens that have a small
exit and do as much damage as you can. Try to finish everyone off
before the water area.

Mission 8:
Get first place in the treasure hunt!

Mission 9:
Defeat all enemies!

Mission 10:
Win the obstacle course race (nearly dead)!

Mission 11:
Use weapon throw to defeat all enemies (everyone is nearly dead)!
Note: This is very easy, your character's weapon throw can
finish everyone off in one or two shots.

Mission 12:
Defeat all enemies (nearly dead)!

Mission 13:
Defeat all enemies!

Mission 14:
Win the obstacle course race!
Note: Arguably the most difficult mission to get an A rank on. Use the
two pits to your advantage, though you'll probably have to beat one of
the enemies the normal way.

Mission 15:
Defeat all enemies!

-------------------
7. Free Battle
-------------------
In the Free Battle mode you can practice any event you want against
the computer or friends (via local wireless).

Essentially you get to create your own custom tournament, deciding which
events to play. You can even lengthen the tournament past four events
by selecting different events multiple times (see the menu section above).

Area and course length refers to the type of course (city or island),
and leg (preliminary, semi-final, final), respectively. Unfortunately you
cannot mix and match course lengths and areas.

-------------------
8. Team Edit
-------------------
Using the points, customize parts, and special moves you gain from
Challenge Mode, you can create up to six of your own characters for your
own team.

The good news is that each character can use all of the points
you've collected in Challenge Mode. That means if you have 450 points,
each of your six characters will have 450 points to distribute among
their stats.

The bad news is that the game has a balancing mechanism so that you don't
create 'ultimate' characters, like those with too many special moves.

When you distribute points among your characters' stats, whichever stat
is dominant will determine what 'type' of character they are. There are
five types: Power, Speed, Weapon, Stamina, and Balanced.

In order to get a power character, make sure the character's power total
(a combination of punch and kick stats) is higher than its others. This
character will be able to knock enemies away with the third hit of their
combo attack.

In order to get a stamina character, make sure the character's toughness
is higher than its other stats. This character will be able to breath
underwater a little longer than other characters.

In order to get a speed character, make sure the character's speed stat
(a combination of speed and jump stats) is higher than its others. This
character will have better agility (the ability to stop and turn quickly).

In order to get a weapon character, make sure the character's weapon stat
(which is the weapon and thrown weapon stat combined) is higher than
its other stats. This can be confusing because this statistic doesn't
appear in the character's stat box, so you have to count it out. This
character will be able to knock enemies back with the third hit of its
weapon combo.

In order to get a balanced character, the character's two highest stats
must be relatively close to one another (the bars in the stat box will
be even).

A character who is of the 'balanced' type is at a distinct disadvantage,
as they don't gain any of the special benefits of the other types, and
it takes them longer to stop when dashing. (thanks to the kunio_undokai
livedoor blog for that info!)

The End
--------------------
I'd like to thank Arc System Works for bringing Kunio-kun back. Really.
I mean, think of all the beloved game series you've played that just
sort of died off because the licenses got lost somewhere. I really feel
like a decent Kunio revival is just around the corner... probably on the
Wii, but that's OK, I can suck it up and buy a Wii if I need to. Maybe.

I'd also like to thank my man Felix who taught me all sorts of crazy
things about the Kunio series, including how to dominate the original
Daiundoukai. He won't play this game on principal that it's in 3D.

If for some reason you can read Japanese and you just popped in to read
this guide for kicks, I highly suggest you check out this website-
