001-General Information
-----------------------------------------------------------

This is a walkthrough for the Nintendo DS game called
Professor Layton and the Unwound Future. It's a
puzzle/mystery game containing a lot of brainteasers.

You can contact me at [email protected] if you
have any questions, suggestions or that sort of thing.

002-Video Walkthrough
-----------------------------------------------------------

I made a video walkthrough for this game, so if you would
rather watch me solve various puzzles rather than read
about them, you can see them all at:

http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLACCB8DB9B660C665

I will also include links to the individual videos in this
guide.

003-Walkthrough
-----------------------------------------------------------

Select "new game" to start a new game, then enter in a
name. This will be the name that appears on your save file.

003a-Prologue
-----------------------------------------------------------

Video #1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IZhqZK5gNM

Professor Layton and his apprentice, Luke, have just gotten
a mysterious letter. The letter comes from Luke, but it was
written ten years in the future! How on Earth did Luke
write a time-travelling letter?

Layton can't help but be reminded of what happened the
previous week, when they were invited to a fancy banquet.
At this banquet, a scientist demonstrated the world's first
time machine...

The game cuts the banquet. You can talk to Inspector
Chelmey and Barton if you want, but you absolutely have to
talk to one of the two characters on the right. These are
Prime Minister Bill Hawks, and his wife, Caroline.

Once you overhear the Prime Minister's conversation with
his wife, a guard appears. Tap on him for a puzzle.

Video #2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nj87Pw9SMFs

Puzzle #001: A Party Crasher
----------------------------

Summary: There are eleven tables here. Find the one which
fulfills all three conditions:

1. It is next to a table with a red flower.
2. It is not next to a table with an identically-colored
tablecloth.
3. It does not have a yellow flower on it.

Solution: The table you seek is the one with a red flower
and a red tablecloth.

-------

A presenter appears. Talk to him and watch the scene that
follows. The Prime Minister makes a speech, then the
scientist who made the time machine goads the Prime
Minister into testing out the time machine.

Once the Prime Minister is inside the time machine, things
go horribly wrong. The time machine explodes, and both the
scientist and the Prime Minister disappear.

The game returns to the present day. Could the time machine
fiasco be related to this letter from the future, in some
way? Could it be related to the fact that other scientists
in London are also disappearing? There's only one way to
find out: by going to the clock shop on Midland Road, just
like the letter suggests.

Video #3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxIuvaRF9ng

Before our heroes can visit the clock shop, however, they
must find it on the map.

Puzzle #002: The Clock Shop
---------------------------

Summary: Using the map, along with the times 12, 3, 12, 9
and 6, can you figure out the destination?

Solution: On an analogue clock, 12:00 is up, 3:00 is right,
6:00 is down, and 9:00 is up. Therefore, you should go up,
right, up, left and down from the starting point to reach
point H.

-------

Talk to the old woman here to learn about hint coins. These
can be used to purchase hints, which will help you solve
puzzles. The game will also give you a tutorial on moving
around and saving your game.

Go forward one screen and talk to the man for a puzzle.

Puzzle #003: Bus Scheduling
---------------------------

Summary: A person has a one-hour commute, to his two-hour
job. He can leave for his work at 4:00 AM, 9:00 AM, 2:30
PM, 6:00 PM or 12:00 AM. The buses that leaves from his
work arrive at 5:00 AM, 10:30 AM, 5:00 PM, 8:00 PM and
12:00 AM. Our person wants to minimize the amount of time
he spends waiting for the bus that leaves his work, so
which bus should he take?

Solution: If he has a one-hour commute and a two-hour job,
that means he will start waiting for the bus home, three
hours after he takes the bus that leaves for his work.

If he leaves at 4, he waits at 7 for the 10:30 bus.
If he leaves at 9, he waits at 12 for the 5:00 bus.
If he leaves at 2:30, he waits at 5:30 for the 8:00 bus.
If he leaves at 6, he waits at 9 for the 12:00 bus.
If he leaves at 12, he waits at 3 for the 5:00 bus.

The shortest wait will be the final one, the two-hour wait
which he has if he takes the midnight bus. Therefore, E is
the answer.

-------

Go forward a screen and talk to Stachenscarfen, a character
who was in the previous two Layton games. Once he leaves,
examine the stairs for a puzzle.

Puzzle #004: Moving Day
-----------------------

Summary: Two men are carrying boxes from the first floor
the second floor. Man A can climb the stairs in a minute,
while carrying two boxes. Man B can climb the stairs in
half a minute, while carrying one box. How many minutes
does it take for them to transport seven boxes?

Solution: Three minutes. Don't forget to take into account
the time the men spend climbing back down the stairs, in
order to get more boxes.

-------

Video #4: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uosjQzSu7Yk

All right, we're almost at the clock shop. Go forward one
more screen, and you're there. Just tap on the door to go
inside the clock shop, and...oh wait, the entrance is
blocked by a puzzle.

Puzzle #005: The Timepiece
--------------------------

Summary: You are told to press the panel with the
timepiece. Which panel is that?

Solution: That's the upper/left panel, which has an
hourglass on it.

-------

Layton and Luke enter the shop. The woman who works there
recognizes Professor Layton. She decides to give him a
puzzle, to ensure that the famous puzzle solver is really
in her shop.

Puzzle #006: Needling Needles
-----------------------------

Summary: You have a diagram. How many needles eyes does
Thread A go through?

Solution: Ten.

-------

The woman suggests that you explore the clock, until her
husband returns. Tap on the large clock here for a puzzle.

Puzzle #007: What's the Time?
-----------------------------

Summary: We have a picture of a clock. None of the numbers
are on the clock, but can you figure out what time it is?

Solution: It is 6:00, the only time where the hour hand and
the minute hand are directly opposite of each other.

-------

Go down a screen. There is a puzzle on the clock in the
lower/right.

Puzzle #008: The Odd Clock
--------------------------

Summary: Just like the last puzzle, we have a picture of a
clock with no numbers on it. Can you figure out what time
it is?

Solution: It is 12:00, the only time where the hour hand
and the minute hand overlap each other.

-------

Go forward. The woman's husband is now here. His name is
Cogg, and he wants to show you what the big clock looks
like when it's running. Unfortunately, he has a loose gear,
and he needs your help to fix it.

Puzzle #009: Cogged Down
------------------------

Summary: You want the top and bottom gears to turn
clockwise. You can do this by adding either Cog A, Cog B or
Cog C. Which cog do you choose?

Solution: B. If there is an odd number of cogs between the
top and bottom cogs, they move in the same direction.

-------

Cogg uses the Professor's information to fix the clock. It
turns out that it's not a clock. It's a time machine! Once
it starts, our heroes are sent ten years, into the future!

003b-Chapter 1: Is This the Future?
-----------------------------------------------------------

Video #5: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYpAZD-RGuw

The clock shop owners lock the door behind our heroes,
which means Layton and Luke are stuck here for the time
being. But what IS this strange place?

What you want to do at this point in the game is talk to
everyone, until Luke and Layton are convinced that they are
in the future. Talk to the man here, then go down a screen.

Talk to the man here, who doesn't like Layton's hat. Go
into the building on the left and talk to the woman at the
bar. She suggests that Professor Layton get rid of the hat.
The man at the bar, meanwhile, has a puzzle.

Puzzle #010: What Day Is It? 1
------------------------------

Summary: If yesterday's day after tomorrow is Sunday, what
day is tomorrow's day before yesterday?

Solution: The question is basically saying, "If tomorrow is
Sunday, what day was yesterday?" That means today is
Saturday, and the answer is Friday.

-------

Leave the store, then go down a screen. Talk to the man
here, who is definitely afraid of Layton's hat. How odd. Go
left into the store and tap on the flower. This is Granny
Riddleton's shack. If you miss a puzzle, it will reappear
here, later on the game.

Video #6: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aba2EPubnBY

There's nothing for you here now, so leave the shack and go
south. Examine the bus stop, which hasn't been working for
five years. Layton is still unconvinced that they are in
the future, and he decides to ask the postman for more
information.

The postman has a letter for Layton, along with a puzzle.

Puzzle #011: The Professor's Hat
--------------------------------

Summary: Rearrange the five pieces so they fit inside the
outlined area.

Solution: If R is red, P is purple, G is green, Y is yellow
and T is teal...

RPPP
RPGG
RPRY
RRRY
TYYY
TTTTYY

-------

The letter is from Future Luke. He is sure that Layton
wants proof that he is in the future. The letter says that
proof can be found at a nearby hospital.

Talk to the woman to learn about the hotel, then go right.
Talk to the boy, then go right. Talk to the goon on the
left for a puzzle.

Puzzle #012: Follow the Arrows
------------------------------

Summary: You want to put the seven blocks into place, by
following the arrows.

Solution: 3+4-2=5. The trick to the puzzle is that you must
turn the "1" sideways so it looks like a minus sign.

-------

Video #7: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHWObxnPJVk

Talk to the girl here. Her name is Becky, and she works at
the hotel. Follow her inside and talk to the woman at the
desk for a puzzle.

Puzzle #013: Pick the Pen
-------------------------

Summary: Each pen has a cap of the wrong color. Each pen
should have one white section. Which pen is left of the one
with the green cap?

Solution: Pen C.

-------

Layton and Luke sign in. Talk to Becky, and she takes our
heroes to their room. She also gives them a puzzle.

Puzzle #014: Find the Station
-----------------------------

Summary: You must find the station, by duplicating the
route from the school to the library.

Solution: The subway station is the stop in the upper/left
corner.

-------

Becky tells our heroes to visit the nearby arcade, which
you reach by going left from the hotel, then north. Examine
the lamp between the beds here for a puzzle.

Puzzle #015: Boxes of Matches
-----------------------------

Summary: You have two pictures of matchboxes. One is taken
from above, and one is taken from the side. What is the
largest number of matches there can be?

Solution: 21.

-------

Leave the hotel room. When you leave the hotel, Luke gets a
toy car from the woman at the desk. This game has a toy car
metapuzzle. When you solve certain puzzles, you get
racetracks for your toy car. Solve all the tracks to unlock
some bonus puzzles.

Leave the hotel, then go left. Talk to Max, and he'll let
you go north, to the arcade.

Video #8: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIOa4gtAuV4

Talk to the Family Goon for a puzzle.

Puzzle #016: What Day Is It? 2
------------------------------

Summary: If 7 days after 70 days ago was Sunday, 7 days
before 70 days from today is what day?

Solution: Sunday. That's because a week has seven days in
it, so 7 days after a Sunday, or 70 days after a Sunday, is
also going to be a Sunday.

-------

Go inside the restaurant. Talk to the man for a puzzle.

Puzzle #017: The Messy Note
---------------------------

Summary: The man's wife left a note, which should give him
a number. What number is it?

Solution: 8, because the note kind of resembles 121-113.

-------

Leave the restaurant. Go up and talk to the man to learn
that the Family is a gang which runs the town. Their goons
are everywhere. Then, tap on the banana peel for a puzzle.

Puzzle #018: Slippery Trip 1
----------------------------

Summary: Lead Layton to the exit.

Solution: Move down, then go up several times until you're
below a banana peel. Head left, then down all the way. From
here, follow the path to the exit, never stepping on a
banana as you do so.

-------

Go to the right. From this screen, you can go left to the
hotel. Go forward to reach the area with the train station.
A family goon blocks access to the area to the north, which
leads to the Family's Casino.

Go down the stairs to the right to reach the subway. Tap on
the machine and go to the only subway destination which is
available: Auckland Lane. Once there, go up the stairs to
reach the place mentioned in Future Luke's letter: the
hospital.

Video #9: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbIymOSBxRk

Tap around on the tree in front of the hospital to get a
hidden puzzle.

Puzzle #146: Birds on a Wire
----------------------------

Summary: A woman is trying to shoo birds off of a telephone
wire. Each time she shoos them, half of the birds fly away,
but one bird flies back. She will never be able to get rid
of all the birds at this rate. How many birds are there?

Solution: There are two birds. So basically, whenever she
shoos a bird away, it flies back.

-------

Go inside the hospital. Talk to the woman at the front
desk. She says that Dr. Schrader is here in the hospital,
and she'll tell you what room he is in, if you solve her
puzzle.

Puzzle #020: Making the Rounds
------------------------------

Summary: A doctor visits rooms 18, 29, 33, 38, 49, 54, 63,
65 and 71, but not in that order. Each time she visits a
new room, it shares a digit with the number of the room she
is currently in. Which room does she visit fifth?

Solution: The fifth room is 63. She goes from 71 to 18 to
38 to 33 to 63 to 65 to 54 to 49 to 29. Either that, or she
visits those rooms in the reverse order. In both cases,
Room 63 is the fifth room.

-------

Go left to go up the stairs. Our heroes reunite with Dr.
Schrader. Once you talk with him, tap on him for a puzzle.
There is also a puzzle in the X-ray chart by his bed.

Puzzle #021: Medicine Time
--------------------------

Summary: The doctor is supposed to drink this medicine in
five doses. What will the bottle look like after he takes a
second dose?

Solution: The bottle is 3/5 full at this point. The two
points of the line that you should draw are the top/left
corner of the white square, and the bottom/left corner of
the rightmost square.

Puzzle #022: X-ray Vision
-------------------------

Summary: What is the weird thing about this X-ray?

Solution: That would be the white, circular thing at the
bottom. X-rays are supposed to point out white things, not
black things. Therefore, the black items in the X-ray are
most likely there as a joke.

-------

Video #10: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NdBLqe0cs8

Talk to Dr. Schrader again to get the keys to the
Laytonmobile. Leave the room, then go forward. Oh no!
Layton's car is ruined! Examine it for a puzzle.

Puzzle #023: The Secret Number
------------------------------

Summary: You have two keys to open the car. These keys give
you a number. What number is it?

Solution: 47. When you move the keys around so the teeth
face up against each other, that's the number that appears.

-------

Layton gets inside the car. It's broken and won't start.
Another letter from Future Luke is in the car. It says that
he will meet Luke and Layton at the Casino on Flatstone
Street.

003c-Chapter 2: A Boy Named Luke
-----------------------------------------------------------

We have to go to the casino on Flatstone Street. Return to
the underground subway and take it to Flatstone Street.
Leave the station. A family goon blocks the path to the
north, which leads to the casino.

Talk to the woman here for a puzzle.

Puzzle #019: Checkerboard Bridge
--------------------------------

Summary: You have a 5 by 3 checkerboard bridge. If you only
go up, left or right, how many possible ways can you get to
the exit?

Solution: There are 15 different ways you can reach the
exit.

-------

You want to talk to Becky at the hotel, in order to get
more informatio about the casino. From the subway station,
go south and left. Enter the hotel and talk to Becky. She
says that it is north of the subway station, and she also
says that the family goon has left, so you can go there
now.

Video #11: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZPzI9Ve14E

You CAN go to the casino now, but there are a few puzzles
that are now available from the various characters you've
already met. I'll detail all three of these puzzles.

The first puzzle is with Max, who is left of the hotel.

Puzzle #024: No-go Arrows
-------------------------

Summary: Get from the top/left corner to the bottom/right
corner, without following any of the arrows.

Solution: Go down, right right, down down, left left, down
down, right right right, up, right right and down.

-------

From Max, go left and up. Go left in this room to find
Beasly. He's a puzzle bee, and he works just like Granny
Riddleton, in the previous games. If you miss out on a
puzzle, it might reappear in Beasley's flower.

Go up again, and enter the restaurant. The woman at the bar
has a puzzle.

Puzzle #041: Carrying Glasses
-----------------------------

Summary: Which type of glasses are the most difficult to
carry?

Solution: Type B, which are the only ones that are
stackable.

-------

Go up again and talk to the woodworker for a puzzle.

Puzzle #043: Making the Cut
---------------------------

Summary: Cut the board so there are two pieces, which form
a square.

Solution: The square is a five by five square. Cut out a
piece that looks like this:

XXX
XX
 X

From the right-hand side of the board.

-------

Time to go to the casino! From the clock shop, you go down
three screens and right three screens.

Video #12: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDJuPimf-mI

There is a parrot here. Tap on it, and it will fly away.

Go north twice. A cutscene occurs, in which Professor
Layton sees a woman who bears a strong resemblance to his
old girlfriend, Claire.

Talk to the man here for a puzzle.

Puzzle #026: Upon Reflection
----------------------------

Summary: The shapes here are all from the same letter,
rotated, with a mirror put in the middle. What letter is
it?

Solution: The letter P.

-------

The man leaves. Go north to the casino. A hidden puzzle is
in the fountain, and once you solve that, go inside the
casino for a puzzle.

Puzzle #114: Mr. 8:20
---------------------

Summary: Which man is Mr. 8:20?

Solution: Man E. His mustache looks sort of like the hands
of a clock, at 8:20.

Puzzle #027: A Game of Cards
----------------------------

Summary: What is strange about this picture?

Solution: Select the cards in the hand of the man with an
orange cap. He is holding the cards in such a manner that
he can't see them properly.

-------

Video #13: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_Mjb07GIec

Our heroes enter the casino, where they meet Future Luke.
He wants to make sure that he is dealing with the REAL
Professor Layton, and not just another impostor. He
challenges Layton to a Puzzle Battle.

Puzzle Battle #1
----------------

Summary: You have four cards. A heart is next a diamond, a
club is not next to a spade, and a heart is to the
immediate right of a club. Where is the spade?

Solution: Clues one and two tell us that the heart is next
to a diamond and a club. So, from left to right, three
cards are club, heart and diamond. The spade has to go left
or right of the group of three, and clue two says it's not
the left. Therefore, the spade is the rightmost card.

-------

Layton gives Future Luke a similar puzzle, but this one is
impossible to solve. That's because the rules of the puzzle
don't specifically say that all four cards are of different
suits.

Future Luke is then convinced that he is dealing with the
real Professor Layton. He takes our heroes to a place where
they won't be overheard.

Video #14: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niCtxigmY5s

Future Luke explains that, in the future, an evil genius
takes over London. That's why there are no police, and
mobsters run free. But who is the evil genius that took
over the capital of England? That's no one other that
Professor Hershel Layton.

So Professor Layton is going to turn evil, and he is going
to try to take over London? Oh no!

Our heroes are going to formulate a plan to stop the Evil
Future Layton and his partner, Dr. Stahngun. It's probably
a good idea to NOT discuss this inside a casino run by
gangsters who follow Future Layton, though, so our heroes
decide to leave.

Video #15: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6byh2Mx5prU

While exiting, our heroes run into the gangsters. The
gangsters open fire on our heroes, and Layton decides to
give them a taste of their own medicine by creating a gun
of his own.

Puzzle #028: Slot Machine Gun
-----------------------------

Summary: Put all the pieces in the diagram.

Solution: The red-and-yellow piece goes in the far-left;
this is the part of the gun that bullets come out of. The
slot machine lever goes in the far right, as it is the
trigger. The large red piece goes in the upper/right, and
the bowl-shaped part of this piece goes in the top.

The reddish piece goes left of the big red piece, and the
two gray pieces go in the bottom.

-------

Layton's slot machine gun uses coins for bullets, and it
works perfectly against the gangsters. Our heroes escape,
and Chapter Three begins.

003d-Chapter 3: The Enigmatic Future
-----------------------------------------------------------

Future Luke says our heroes should go to the restaurant. Go
south and talk to the man there. He has wet feet, even
though there is no water here. How odd!

Go south twice. Here, you can go left to the restaurant
area, but first, go south and talk to Belle for a puzzle.

Puzzle #029: Our Dream House
----------------------------

Summary: Divide the grid into four identically-shaped
pieces.

Solution: The trick to this puzzle is that the pieces are
equal in shape, but not in size. The proper shape is a
diamond, like this:

__
/  \
\  /
\/

There is one in the upper/right corner and one in the
bottom/left. Draw a line that connects the bottom points of
the two diamonds.

-------

Video #16: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07pWXXvKTdw

Go north and west twice. Go inside the restaurant, and our
heroes talk with Future Luke's informant, Shipley. Shipley
says that Future Layton is inside the Towering Pagoda in
Chinatown. To get there, simply go north from the train
station, then go right and follow the path.

Go south, then east. Here, outside the hotel, both of the
characters have puzzles.

Puzzle #030: Cookie Conundrum
-----------------------------

Summary: There are fifteen cookies. Person A eats a cookie,
then passes half of them to Person B, and the other half to
Person C. If everyone follows this pattern of eating one
cookie and dividing his cookies into two equal portions,
how many turns will it take to eat the cookies?

Solution: Four. In the first round, the person has fifteen
cookies. second round, each person has 7 cookies. In the
third round, each person has three cookies. In the final
round, everyone has one cookie.

Puzzle #031: False Memory
-------------------------

Summary: Three people have played Memory (the matching
game) with twenty cards. Person A brags he got 10 matches
on his first turn. Person B brags he got 9 matches on his
first turn. Person C brags she got 8 matches on her first
turn. Who is lying?

Solution: Person B is lying, because you can't get 9
matches in Memory. If you do, the two remaining cards HAVE
to match, and that match is added to your total.

-------

Video #17: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufhPtRL4iew

Time to head to Chinatown! Go right, then north. If you
want to continue on the track to Chinatown, go north again.
However, now is a good time to take the train to Auckland
Lane, to get a puzzle by examining the Laytonmobile behind
the hospital.

Puzzle #025: Back and Forth
---------------------------

Summary: Twelve people are going from Point A to Point B,
in a car that carries six people. It takes an hour to get
from Point A to Point B. How many hours does it take to get
everyone to Point B?

Solution: Five hours, because we have five trips.

1. Six people go from A to B.
2. One person drives from B to A. Five people are at B.
3. Six people drive from A to B. Eleven people are at B.
4. One person drives from B to A, where one person is
waiting.
5. The two people drive from A to B.

-------

Once you go north of the underground railway station,
Layton sees the woman who looks just like his old
girlfriend, Claire. He remembers that she is the person who
first bought him a top hat, when he was originally made a
professor.

Go east once the scenes are over. Layton and Luke arrive at
a place with a statue, which resembles the two of them.

Video #18: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgB4Tegb7Kg

You can tap on the statue for a puzzle. You can also talk
to the man for a puzzle.

Puzzle #032: Broken Lance
-------------------------

Summary: Which lance in the picture is broken?

Solution: C

Puzzle #033: Brothers 'n' Sisters
---------------------------------

Summary: Three family members are talking. One person has
an older brother and three younger sisters. Another has two
older brothers and two younger sisters. A third has three
older brothers and a younger sister. If these statements
are all true, what is the smallest number of people the
family can have?

Solution: Six people: three older brothers and three
younger sisters.

-------

Go north and talk to the man for a puzzle.

Puzzle #034: The Mysterious Memo
--------------------------------

Summary: Your roommate leaves a note which reads "101*5"
next to your calculator. What does that note mean?

Solution: It means "SOS". 101 times 5 equals 505, which
sort of looks like SOS when you insert it on a calculator.

-------

Go north, and talk to the man for a puzzle.

in time and get help from Chelmey.

003e-Chapter 4: Back to the Present

Move the L-piece down and left. Move the T-piece left. Now,

which gains our heroes access to the shop.

Video #21: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ih6AI-FcheE

Go to the back of the clock shop and talk to Cogg to learn
about the time machine. It can go between the present and
the past, and it is somehow linked to his old clock. Once

present.

Once in the present, leave the clock shop and talk to
Stachenscarfen for a puzzle.

jacket is green, two of them have white pants, and the
larger man has a white hat. What colors are the outfits?

Solution: The large man has a white hat, red shirt and
green pants. The smaller man has a green hat, red shirt and
white pants. The woman has a red hat, green shirt and white

-------

The woman here is Rosetta, and she's a student who is

university to find that the dean is waiting outside of
Layton's office.

-------

Dean Delmona tells Layton that Flora is waiting for him,
inside the office. Flora is a character from the previous
two Professor Layton games. Layton is officially her
guardian, but he doesn't exactly do a good job of watching
over her. More often than not, he abandons her while going
on adventures with Luke.

Go inside the office. Flora is mad that Layton and Luke
have gone off on another adventure without her. The two of
them apologize, and they agree to take Flora along with
them from here on out.

Talk with Flora, and she goes to get some cucumber
sandwiches. Layton decides this is a good opportunity to
quickly grab his notebook, then leave before Flora notices.
Clearly, he has no intention of fulfilling his promise to
take Flora with him.

The notebook is on the desk. Leave the university now, and
outside of the university, you find a bus stop. Use it to
travel to Scotland Yard. Layton will comment briefly on the
notebook during the trip. Apparently, it's about a time
machine explosion in a lab, many years ago. Could it be
related to the more recent time machine explosion?

Video #23: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KP8e616KaMU

Layton and Luke arrive at Scotland Yard. Enter the building
and talk to the guard for directions to Inspector Chelmey's

Puzzle #050: A Dangerous Place
------------------------------

Summary: Which place in the town has the highest number of
injured people and deaths, every year?

Solution: The hospital.

-------

Go upstairs and talk to Barton. The Inspector comes in, and
he is baffled by the Prime Minister's disappearance. Layton
hints that he knows where the Prime Minister is, but first,
he wants to see the case files from the explosion.

Chelmey agrees to let Layton go to the archives and read up
on the explosion, in exchange for information about the
Prime Minister. Go downstairs to the archives and talk with
Barton to start research. Talk to him again for a puzzle.

Puzzle #051: Park the Car
-------------------------

one up, all the way right, one up, one left, all the way
down, one right, one up, three left and up.

-------

When you solve the puzzle, Layton finishes his research.
Talk with him. Go back upstairs to talk with Inspector
Chelmey. Layton tries to pull a fast one, and he says that
the Prime Minister is in Future London. That's technically
true, but it doesn't help Chelmey very much, seeing as
Chelmey doesn't know anything about the time machine.

Video #24: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wm4SOOLvb0E

It's time to return to the future! But first, since we
won't be visiting the present anytime soon, let's solve all

order, which results in the picture in the bottom/right.
Which piece is on the bottom?

Solution: B. The stack has C on top, A in the middle, and B

Go north, and Layton will talk with Luke, to end the
chapter. Layton warns Luke that it will be dangerous from
here on out.

003g-Chapter 6: Travelling Companions?
-----------------------------------------------------------

Go north to the area with the clock shop. Stachenscarfen
says that the police are following Layton. Really?

Go inside the clock shop and talk to Cogg. It turns out
that the police ARE following Layton. Specifically, Chelmey
and Barton are on Layton's tail. They're not the only ones;
Flora has been following him, too.

The time machine starts, and all of our heroes get sent to
the future. Uh oh!

Video #25: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3_dBTjQ6Kk

Leave the clock shop. If you talk with Inspector Chelmey
here, he declares that he and Barton are going to search
for the Prime Minister. In the meantime, Luke, Layton and
Flora are going to look for Future Luke. Let's drop in on
the contact area (i.e. the restaurant) to see if he's
there.

Talk to the man here for another woodcutting puzzle.

Puzzle #053: Making Another Cut

Go inside the restaurant to the left. Two of the people
here have puzzles.

middle, and the lettuce is directly between the ham and
potato salad.

Solution: From top to bottom, the sandwich has ham,
lettuce, tomato, potato salad and cheese.

Puzzle #055: Picky Movie-Goers
------------------------------

Summary: Seat the six people, according to the conditions.

Solution: The front row has ADE, and the back row has BCF.

off of the candy bar? There's a small hole in the
chocolate, so that piece has to be thrown away.

Solution: Eight.

-------

Go inside the hotel and speak with Becky before entering
Layton's room. Layton will give Flora a brief overview on
their current situation. The fact that Layton and Luke
didn't bother to ask about Future Flora seems to aggravate
Flora's abandonment issues.

Leave the hotel room, and Layton runs into Future Dean
Delmona. His hair has changed color. Talk with the dean,
then leave the hotel.

Go left, then forward, towards the area with the
restaurant. Talk to the goon here for a puzzle.

------------------------------

Summary: Which numbered plates should be replaced?

Solution: The 9 and 6 plates. The other plates can be
rotated and flipped, so the numbers on them look correct.

-------

Nobody else in this area has a puzzle right now, so there's
not much to do besides head to the observatory. You can see
a confrontation between Chelmey and an innocent citizen, if
you want.

The observatory is locked with a puzzle, naturally.

Puzzle #058: Gravity Maze
-------------------------

Summary: Move the maze clockwise and counter-clockwise,
until all the pieces fall in place.

Solution: Turn the maze clockwise, five times in a row.

Chinatown.

Talk to both of the people here for puzzles.

you've got several bonus puzzles you can solve now!

004-The Storyteller's House
-----------------------------------------------------------

Video #52: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69p4sMUHG3Y

In Chapter One, you solve puzzle #10 and you get a sticker
for a picture book. When you solve certain puzzles in this
game, you get stickers for the picture book. Once you get
all the stickers, you can solve the picture book puzzles
and unlock the storyteller's house.

You get stickers from solving puzzles 10, 11, 12, 14, 17,
20, 24, 26, 30, 33, 36, 39, 44, 46, 53, 57, 61, 73, 75, 80,
85, 98, 100, 108, 117, 123, 135 and 138.

Now you just need to put the stickers in the right places
in all three books, to unlock the Storyteller's House. The
clues in the story help you figure out what stickers to put
in. For example, in both stories 1 and 2, a person is
described as having a mustache, so you know that you put
the sticker of the mustached man in that place.

005-The Hotelier's House
-----------------------------------------------------------

Video #53: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4ctpHLIXH0

When you solve certain puzzles, you get toy car challenges.
If you solve all the toy car puzzles, you unlock the
hotelier's house.

Toy Car Challenge 1:

If U, L, D and C are up, left, down and car, the middle
area should look like this:

D L
UCL
L  U

Put the right arrow in the top row, above the leftmost up
arrow.

Toy Car Challenge 2:

Have the car face up. It goes up one square, then right for
two squares, then down for two squares, then left for three
squares, then up three squares, then right four squares,
then down five squares.

It goes left three squares, then uses a jump to get over
the wall. On the other side of the wall, put an up arrow so
it goes up to the upper/left corner. Put a right arrow in
that corner, so it will go to the exit.

Toy Car Challenge 3:

Have the car face up. It goes three squares, then right. At
the rightmost column, it goes up for three squares, then
left. It uses two jumps to cross the two patches of water.

Toy Car Challenge 4:

The car goes right, to the rightmost column, where it turns
up. It goes up five squares, then turns left for three
squares, then it goes down three squares, collecting the
two flags.

The car then turns left, and it goes left for seven
squares, when it turns up. It goes up five squares, then
turns right. It goes straight right to the exit, using the
two jumps to avoid the tree and the water.

Toy Car Challenge 5:

The car goes straight up and jumps the water. Then, it
turns right and jumps the rock. Past the robot, it goes
down one square, left two squares, right three squares,
then turns down. As soon as it gets the robot, it turns
back up, and on the top row, it turns right to the exit.

Toy Car Challenge 6:

Go right, and as soon as you pass the second switch, go
down. Three squares later, go left for eight squares. Go up
for six squares, then right to the rightmost column. Then
go down to the exit.

Toy Car Challenge 7:

Go down two squares, right three squares, up two squares,
right four squares, down four squares, left three squares,
up three squares, right four squares, down four squares,
left five squares, up two squares, left three squares, down
to the bottom row, right to the rightmost column and up to
the exit.

Toy Car Challenge 8:

Go down to the bottom row, left one square, then up four
squares. Turn left and jump over the water tiles (twice)
and turn down after the carrot. Go down to the bottom row,
then left for two tiles, then go as far up as possible.
Turn right and jump over the tree while driving straight to
the exit.

Toy Car Challenge 9:

Start by driving down two squares, then right for four
squares, up five squares, left four squares, right five
squares, down three squares, and right. Jump over the tree
on your way to the exit.

Toy Car Challenge 10:

Go down one square, then right one square. Go down two
squares, right four squares, then left six squares. Go down
to the bottom row, right four squares, up two squares,
right five squares, up to the top row, then down to the
second-to-bottom-row. Go right two squares and up to the
exit, jumping over the tree along the way.

006-The Messenger's House
-----------------------------------------------------------

Video #54: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aB4KeYKqCr0

Shortly after the start of Chapter Six, Stachenscarfen
teaches Luke how to send the parrot on delivery trips. You
get delivery challenges by solving puzzles and talking to
people, so try to talk to everyone and solve all their
puzzles! I'm sure you're probably already doing that,
though.

Solve all ten parrot delivery challenges to unlock the
messenger's house.

Challenge 1:

Draw a straight, horizontal line on the two dots right of
the parrot. Another line goes between the two dots closest
to Stachenscarfen, and one goes between the two dots right
of the left brown thing.

Challenge 2:

There are four horizontal lines you can draw. Draw the top
three horizontal lines.

Challenge 3:

Do an up-and-down rope, in the two spaces right of the
parrot. You have three pegs right of that; draw a rope
between the bottom two pegs. Of the five pegs left of the
exit, draw a rope under the first two, but above the lowest
one.

Challenge 4:

A rope goes between the two leftmost pegs. You can then
draw four horizontal lines; make ropes of the middle two
lines.

Challenge 5:

Do a horizontal line right of the parrot, and a vertical
line below that. Another rope goes under the leftmost brown
thing, and it connects two pegs.

Challenge 6:

Draw a vertical rope between the two rightmost pegs. The
other ropes are all horizontal lines to the left; the peg
in the bottom/left which is directly below another peg is
not used.

Challenge 7:

Draw the lowest horizontal line you can. There are four
pegs in a row, forming a horizontal line; draw a line
between the middle two pegs. The next rope is between the
two pegs above the rope you just made.

Challenge 8:

Draw a horizontal line of the two pegs near the parrot.
Connect the two pegs on the middle clock, and make an
upwards slanting line between the two pegs right of that.

Challenge 9:

Every peg is used, except the four which are level with /
to the right of the parrot. Three of them are horizontal
lines, and the other rope is between the two remaining
pegs.

Challenge 10:

There are eight pegs on the bottom half of the screen. The
four ropes are drawn on them, and three of these ropes are
horizontal.

Challenge 11:

Draw two horizontal lines, above the platform the parrot is
on. Draw a vertical line on the two pegs on the right.
There are two pegs left of the blue thing in the middle,
and you should draw a slanting line between them. Now, just
draw a line between the leftmost peg and the lowest peg.

Challenge 12:

Draw a horizontal line, for the parrot to land on, in his
first hop. There are three pegs in the top/left, and you
draw a vertical line between two of them. Under the purple
platform in the middle is a peg; connect it to the closest
peg, which is right of it. Connect the two pegs in the
upper/right; if this line were to be extended, it would
touch the corner of Hazel's platform. Of the three
available pegs in the lower/left, connect the upper two.

Like I said earlier, solve all ten parrot delivery
challenges to unlock the messenger's house. You access
these puzzles in the bonus section.

Puzzle #160: Dirt Patchwork
---------------------------

Summary: How many areas can a circle be divided into, using
only five lines?

Solution: Sixteen.

Puzzle #161: Black Hat, White Hat
---------------------------------

Summary: Form an outline of Layton's hat, using the pieces.

Solution: The longest piece goes in the upper/right. There
are two pieces with a C-shaped edge. The larger one goes in
the bottom/right, and the smaller one goes in the
bottom/left. The L-piece goes into the upper/left, and the
other two pieces fit into the two remaining spaces.

The key to every sliding puzzle is the order you put the
pieces in. When the puzzle is solved, the missing piece
goes in the upper/right corner. For some reason, this
means you have to solve the lower/right corner first.

Using my fancy diagram up there, do the following:

Put piece 1 into place. Never move this piece again.
Put piece 2 into place. Never move this piece again.
Put piece 3 into place. Never move this piece again.
Put piece 4 into place. Never move this piece again.

Hmmm, was it really necessary for me to list out each
piece separately? Maybe not. Oh well, now you've got the
lower/left quadrant done. You don't need to touch any of
those pieces again.

Now, you can move the empty square to spot #2, and from
there, slide pieces 1 and 2 into their correct spot. You
don't need to touch either of those pieces again.

We repeat the process.
