001-General Information
-----------------------------------------------------------
This is a walkthrough for the Nintendo DS game called
Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box. It's a
puzzle/mystery game containing a lot of brainteasers.
You can contact me at
[email protected] if you
have any questions, suggestions or that sort of thing.
002-Video Walkthrough
-----------------------------------------------------------
I made a video walkthrough for this game, so if you would
rather watch me solve various puzzles rather than read
about them, you can see them all at:
http://www.youtube.com/playlist?p=PL13F1E536E5D98573
I will also include links to the individual videos in this
guide.
003-Walkthrough
-----------------------------------------------------------
Video #1:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trQWiGk8zyA
The game begins with Professor Layton and his apprentice,
Luke, taking a trip on a luxurious train. Our heroes are
preoccupied with the mystery of the diabolical box, which
is called the Elysian Box. This box is rumored to kill
anyone who opens it.
003a-Prologue
-----------------------------------------------------------
A few days earlier, Professor Layton received a letter from
his friend, Dr. Andrew Schrader. The good doctor has the
Elysian Box, and he has decided to open it.
Professor Layton gets the feeling that something horrible
is going to happen. After all, everyone who opens the box
dies. Therefore, he decides to check up on Dr. Schrader.
First, Layton needs his keys. You can look for them by
tapping on the various items on the touchscreen. The keys
are in the middle drawer of the desk.
A brief tutorial appears, which teaches you how to move.
Tap on the shoe icon in the lower/right, then tap on an
arrow. Try this out by moving to the right, two times in a
row.
Video #2:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnhTkK0CVzg
Puzzle #001: Dr. Schrader's Map
-------------------------------
Summary: There are five empty places on the map, and six
pieces (including the one already placed on the map). Put
the pieces on the map so all the roads connect to each
other.
Solution: The trick to this puzzle is determining which of
the six tiles do NOT go on the map. The tile that doesn't
go on the map is actually the tile which is on the map at
the start of the puzzle.
From left to right, the five pieces at the bottom of the
screen go...
1. The leftmost space.
2. The bottom space.
3. The top space.
4. The right space.
5. The middle space.
-------
With the puzzle solved, Professor Layton and Luke drive to
the Doctor's apartment complex. Which apartment, er, flat
belongs to Dr. Schrader?
Puzzle #002: The Doctor's Home
------------------------------
Summary: The doctor's room has a flag hanging over it, the
doctor's room faces the rising sun, and a nearby flat has
music coming out of it.
Solution: All you need to know is that a flag hangs over
the doctor's flat. There's only one window with a flag over
it, the one in the upper/left corner.
-------
Talk to the man here. He tells you to tap on the mailbox
for something special. Do this, and you get a hint coin.
All throughout this game, you can get hint coins by tapping
on things, and you can use the hint coins to help solve
puzzles.
Try this out by finding hint coins at the base of the
street lamp and the awning above the door.
Go through the door. Our heroes approach Dr. Schrader's
flat, but the door is locked by another puzzle. Boy, Dr.
Schrader sure makes it hard for people to visit him, huh?
Puzzle #003: The Right Key
--------------------------
Summary: You have three keys. Which key opens the door?
Solution: It's the key on the bottom. The trick is that you
have to rotate the key, so its circular end goes into the
keyhole.
----
Our heroes enter the room to find the window open and Dr.
Schrader dead. They also find a mysterious train ticket.
Video #3:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MYQj_fnjuE
Inspector Chelmey, of Scotland Yard, appears, along with
his assistant, Barton. Luke is suspicious of the Inspector
due to the events of the last game, but this is the real
Inspector Chelmey.
Chelmey figures that Dr. Schrader's death isn't a murder,
because the door was locked. Perhaps the doctor died from a
heart attack.
Layton believes there is a possible escape route from the
room, one which is suspicious.
Puzzle #004: A Secure Room
--------------------------
Summary: What is in this room which is an escape route and
also suspicious?
Solution: Examine the closed window. The curtain to the
window is ripped. Now that's certain suspicious!
-------
Our heroes look out the window, where someone clearly used
the curtain to escape.
Layton notices a torn photo in Dr. Schrader's hands.
Chelmey gets mad that they are disturbing the crime scene,
so he takes the photograph pieces and kicks our heroes out
of the room.
Layton is puzzled by the fact that the Elysian Box was not
in the apartment. He is also puzzled by the mysterious
train ticket. Layton and Luke decide to take the train, in
hopes of solving the mystery.
003b-Chapter 1: The Legendary Molentary Express
-----------------------------------------------------------
Video #4:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PI_ybqyUyo
Time to explore the train! But first, there are two puzzles
in this room. One is on the trunk, and one is on the table.
Puzzle #005: Luke's Trunk
-------------------------
Summary: Put everything in the trunk, without having things
overlap.
Solution: The teddy bear is in the upper/right corner, and
directly under it is the bag with the ribbon and the
telescope. The books are in the upper/left corner, and
below them is the spatula and frying pan. The boomerang is
in the up/left area, next to the shirts. The gray thing is
on the bottom.
Puzzle #017: The Worker Ant
---------------------------
Summary: Draw the longest line possible, from start to
finish.
Solution: Go down, left, up, left, left, down, right,
right, down, right, up, right, down, left, left, up, up,
left and down.
-------
Leave the room by going right. If you talk to the girl, you
learn that there is a fancy carriage on the train. However,
if you try to go there by leaving south, the conductor
stops you.
Instead, talk to the girl again for a puzzle.
Puzzle #024: A Strip of Paper
-----------------------------
Summary: A piece of paper has been folded twice. On each
fold, one end was an inch away from the other end. How far
apart are the folds, in terms of a tenth of an inch?
Solution: This is kind of tricky. If you fold a piece of
paper, and one end is an inch away from the other, that
must mean the fold is half an inch away from the center of
the paper. Since this happened twice, both folds are half
an inch away from the center of the paper, making them a
full inch away from each other.
The solution is 10. 10 tenths of an inch is one inch, which
is how far apart the two folds are.
-------
Go to the next carriage by leaving through the door at the
back of this carriage. Here, you can go inside the open
door on the left and tap on the water pitcher to get a
puzzle.
Puzzle #023: Pitchers and Poison
--------------------------------
Summary: You have two pitchers. A third pitcher, containing
poison, is placed left or right of them. The third pitcher
moves left and right fifty-five times. You want the poison
to be in place #2, so which starting position do you put
the poison in, left or right?
Solution: The answer is B, on the right. If the poison
starts on the right, it will always end up on the right
after an odd number of switches.
-------
Leave the room, then go to the next carriage.
Video #5:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E07YRqsap6o
This is the dining room. Talk to the waiter for a puzzle.
Puzzle #007: Dining Couples
---------------------------
Summary: Based off of the clues and the picture, figure out
which character is Mrs. Hadley.
Solution: Mrs. Hadley is in position E. The O'Connors are
in A and B because they're sitting together, the Jonses are
C and G because they both have aisle seats, and the
Lamberts are D and H, across from each other.
-------
There are two doors that lead out of this room. The one of
the left goes to the kitchen. The one on the right leads to
the rest of the train.
Go to the kitchen and talk with the chef. He gives you a
hamster, which is a metapuzzle in this game. Sometimes,
when you solve puzzles, you get an item which will help you
solve the hamster challenge. For example, the chef gives
you an apple that you can use in the hamster puzzle.
Leave the kitchen and go through the other exit. Talk to
the woman here for a puzzle.
Puzzle #006: Pancake Stacks 1
-----------------------------
Summary: Solve the Tower of Hanoi puzzle with three
pancakes.
Solution: Simple! If the plates from left to right are
Plate A, Plate B and Plate C...
1. Move a pancake from A to C.
2. Move a pancake from A to B.
3. Move a pancake from C to B.
4. Move a pancake from A to C.
5. Move a pancake from B to A.
6. Move a pancake from B to C.
7. Move a pancake from A to C.
-------
You can't go inside a room in this train car, so move to
the next train car. This has a room you can go inside, but
nothing is there for you to do, so instead, go down through
the door at the end of the hall.
You've reach the end of the train! The view here is so good
that it reminds Professor Layton of a puzzle.
Puzzle #011: Trees in the Forest
--------------------------------
Summary: You have a four by four grid. Draw lines of the
grid, so there are four sections. Each section must have
all four types of trees.
Solution: Here's a picture of the solution, with different
letters indicating different areas:
ABBB
AABD
CADD
CCCD
-------
Video #6:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xin4lJdb5A
Layton and Luke now have a good idea of all the cars in the
train now. These are:
Fancy Car
Layton and Luke's room
Empty Car
Dining Room
Empty Car
Empty Car
Observation Deck
Of course, the empty cars aren't really empty. They belong
to characters we haven't met yet. But before we meet them,
check out the garbage here for a puzzle.
Puzzle #022: Taking out the Trash
---------------------------------
Summary: A difficult puzzle! How do you get the trash from
the top of the slider puzzle to the bottom?
Solution: The first general move is to get one of the blue
blocks into the area that sticks out in the upper right.
Move the two blue blocks on the right down. Move the yellow
block on the right down, too. Move the top yellow block
right, and move the two blue blocks up. Move the bottom
yellow block left, and move the top yellow block down. Now,
move the two blue block right, so one is in the area
sticking out at the right, and the other blue block is left
of that.
The next general move is to move the trash down one, and
have a blue block above it.
Move both yellow blocks up. Move one of the blue blocks up
and left, into the lower/left corner. Move the right yellow
block down all the way, then move the other yellow block
down all the way, and right. Move the trash all the way
down, then move the highest blue block left all the way,
and up. Move the trash back up. Now, there's a blue block
above the trash.
The next general goal I have is to move the trash so it is
under the gray cat.
Move the leftmost blue block up all the way. Move both
yellow blocks up, and move the bottom yellow block left.
Move the rightmost yellow block down all the way, and move
the leftmost blue block right and down. Move the trash down
and right.
All right! You're in the home stretch.
Move the left yellow block up all the way. Move the blue
block under the trash left and up. Move the right yellow
block up and left. Move the trash down all the way. Move
the leftmost blue block right and up. Move the trash and
yellow block up. Move the bottom blue block up and left,
then move the trash down to the exit.
-------
Go down a screen and talk to Mr. Beluga, the man who owns
the train. Then, move down another screen to reach the
dining car. Our heroes then eat a meal. They see Mr. Beluga
yell at the cook, and Layton is reminded of a puzzle.
Puzzle #010: A Work of Art
--------------------------
Summary: How many colors do you have to use to fill every
spot in this diagram, while having no two spots made up of
the same color touching each other?
Solution: Three.
-------
The waiter here has a puzzle, as does the chef in the
kitchen. There is also a puzzle at the water glass on the
table in this room.
Puzzle #008: Luke's Big Dinner
------------------------------
Summary: We have a dinner on the screen. Luke's portion of
the meal costs twice as much as Layton's portion. What did
Luke eat?
Solution: All together, the meal costs $105. Therefore,
Luke had $70 worth of food, which is twice as much as
Layton's portion, $35. Luke had the food which is $12, $16,
$17 and $25.
Puzzle #013: On Your Plate
--------------------------
Summary: There are two triangles on the plate: a small one
and a big one. How much bigger is the big triangle?
Solution: The big triangle is four times bigger than the
small one.
Puzzle #009: Stacked Glasses
----------------------------
Summary: You have five pictures of glasses, stacked in
various ways. Which picture is impossible to duplicate with
real glasses?
Solution: Picture D.
-------
Video #7:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUERIVhGCWU
Leave the dining room by the bottom exit. Our heroes walk
straight into a mystery. Babette's boy, Tom, is missing.
All he left behind was his shoe. Babette throws a fit, and
Inspector Chelmey says he'll investigate.
Talk to the Inspector about the missing child. He will give
you a puzzle to test your skills.
Puzzle #020: The Shoe Store Thief
---------------------------------
Summary: Someone goes a shoe store and buys a $30 pair of
shoes with a $50 bill. The shoe store owner gets change for
the $50 from the person next door. Later, the $50 is proven
to be counterfeit, so the shoe store owner gives $50 to the
person next door in compensation. How much money did the
shoe store person lose?
Solution: $50.
-------
Go down a screen, to the carriage with Layton's room. You
have two puzzles here: one with the woman and one with the
conductor you meet if you try to go south.
Make sure to talk to the conductor here, because he gives
you the camera, which is a meta-puzzle, just like the
hamster puzzle. As the game progresses, you will receive
camera parts for solving certain puzzles. At the end of the
game, or close to it, at any rate, you will have all the
camera parts, and you can solve the puzzle by fixing the
camera.
Puzzle #018: The Shoe Maze
--------------------------
Summary: Make a path from start to finish, which alternates
between pictures of left and right feet.
Solution: Go right three, up two, left one, up two, right
two, down one, right two, up one, left one, up two and
right.
Puzzle #019: The Train Ride
------------------------------
Summary: A train is riding along. At stop 1, 1/6 of the
passengers leave. At stop 2, 1/5 of the passengers leave.
At stop 3, 1/4 of the passengers leave. At stop 4, 1/3 of
the passengers leave, and at stop 5, 1/2 of the passengers
leave. What is the fewest number of people that the train
could have started out with?
Solution: Six people. If there are six people, one person
leaves at each stop.
-------
Time to search for Tom. Go north to the dining carriage and
go in the kitchen to find Tom's hat. This reminds Luke of a
puzzle.
Puzzle #014: Red Caps
---------------------
Summary: A teacher gives caps to all her students. If you
can see four people wearing a red cap, you get a red
balloon. If not, you get a blue balloon. Some people got
red balloons, and some people got blue balloons. How many
people got red balloons?
Solution: There must be four people with red caps. That
way, some people can see four red caps, and some people
(namely, the four wearing red caps) don't see four red
caps. Therefore, six people out of the ten people got a red
balloon for seeing four people in red caps.
------
Leave the kitchen and go out the northern exit.
Video #8:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=da6WYxY1FBw
This is Babette's carriage. Enter her room and examine the
food scraps for a clue about Tom. Examine the flower vase
for a puzzle.
Puzzle #016: Crazy Daisies
--------------------------
Summary: Which picture matches the black and white picture
on the left?
Solution: Picture A matches.
-------
Leave Babette's room and go north to the observation deck.
Professor Layton and Luke meet a mysterious woman who looks
strangely familiar along the way.
At the observation deck, talk to the man for a puzzle.
Puzzle #025: Surviving in the Wild
----------------------------------
Summary: There is a maze onscreen. Which animals will make
it out of the maze alive?
Solution: The lion will make it out alive. The rabbit can
escape the maze, but it will surely be eaten by the lion
before it escapes.
-------
Go south and return to the dining room. Talk to the waiter.
He says that a couple was talking about Tom. They are in
the car to the south, so go through the south exit and
enter the room.
Talk to the two people to get information about Tom. Talk
to them again for a puzzle.
Puzzle #021: Pass It On
-----------------------
Summary: It takes one minute to tell a story from one
person to another. If there are eight people in a room, how
long will it take for Person #1 to get the message to
everyone?
Solution: Three minutes, because Person #1 tells Person #2
in one minute. In the second minute, Persons #1 and 2 tell
the story to Persons #3 and 4. In the third minute, Persons
#1, 2, 3 and 4 tell the story to Persons #5, 6, 7 and 8.
-------
Leave the room, and Layton talks to Inspector Chelmey.
Layton has already solved the Tom mystery, but he's waiting
for a more dramatically appropriate moment to reveal this
information.
Go south, and Layton and Luke agree that the mysterious
woman is following them. Examine Tom's shoe, which is here
on the floor. With a puzzle, Layton reveals that Tom is a
dog, not a child. The person holding the dog is the mystery
woman at the observation deck.
Puzzle #015: Who Is Tom Really?
------------------------------
Summary: Move the tiles around to form a picture of Tom in
the middle of the screen.
Solution: It's easiest if you treat the L-shaped tiles and
dog paw tiles as two-by-two square tiles, when solving this
puzzle. That's because there are six two-by-two spaces on
the board.
A B C
D E F
Move the four pieces with pictures of Tom into spots A, C,
D and F, respectively.
Move piece C to E.
Move piece A to C.
Move piece D to A.
Move piece E to D.
Move piece C to E.
Move piece F to C.
Move piece E to F.
Move piece A to E.
Move piece C to A.
Move piece E to B.
Now, move every L-shaped tile left to the right, one spot,
to solve the puzzle.
-------
Video #9:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3g5JkaLHgUI
Head north through all the screens. A man stands between
you and the observation deck, and he won't let you pass
unless you have solved 12 puzzles. Solve 12 puzzles if you
haven't already, then talk to him for another puzzle.
Puzzle #012: Clouds and Sky
---------------------------
Summary: There is a picture, with blue and white spots.
What is the ratio of blue to white?
Solution: 6 to 4. When you divide the picture into ten
spaces, per the instructions, you can see that certain blue
areas are identical to certain white areas.
-------
Once you solve the man's puzzle, he goes away. Go to the
observation deck and talk to the mysterious woman. She's
Flora, the girl from the previous Professor Layton game.
He's her guardian.
Flora joins up with Luke and Layton. Go to Babette's room
and talk to her. She is happy to have her dog Tom back, and
Chelmey is upset to learn that Tom is a dog.
Head back to Layton's room and the train suddenly stops.
Layton goes outside, where he learns that Beluga is the
uncle of Sammy. Go left and examine the train for the final
puzzle of the chapter.
Puzzle #026: Train Swap
-----------------------
Summary: Can you switch the two trains?
Solution: It's a slider puzzle! Put Red 1 in the
upper/right corner, and move Green 1 into the lower/left
corner. Move all the green cars down. Then move Red 1 left,
into its proper place. Now, move all the other cars up, and
move Green 1 right, into its proper place.
From here, it's pretty simple to get all the green cars
into place. Move the two remaining red cars in the
bottom/left to get them out of the way, and move Green Cars
2 and 3 into their designated locations. Then, move the red
cars to their spots; if you need to switch the red cars,
just put one in the upper/right corner. Finally, put Green
Car 4 in its place.
-------
With the puzzle solved, our heroes prepare to go to
Dropstone.
003c-Chapter 2: The Country Village of Dropstone
-----------------------------------------------------------
Video #10:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgVPW9rx0UA
Dropstone is a nice town, and they are celebrating their
50th anniversary today, so it's a good time to visit.
Talk to Sammy if you want, and check the poster on the wall
for a puzzle.
Puzzle #027: A Dramatic Farewell
--------------------------------
Summary: What is wrong with this picture?
Solution: Select the top of the open window on the train.
If that drawing is accurate, the window opens upwards,
going through the roof.
-------
Go right, and talk to Mr. Beluga. He says it is a year
since a woman passed. Interesting...
Go right again, and talk to the man for a puzzle.
Puzzle #041: Cube Halves
------------------------
Summary: Three of the four designs will form a perfect
cube, when added to an identically-shaped piece. Which is
the design that won't form a cube?
Solution: C.
-------
Go north. Flora, for one, is excited to see the carnival.
None of our heroes notice a villain in the shadows as they
explore. There are two puzzles here: one in the cart of
vegetables, and one in the stand on the left.
Puzzle #028: The Warped Wheel
-----------------------------
Summary: There is a triangle-shaped wheel. Which line
depicts the path of this wheel?
Solution: The wheel is a triangle, so its path is made up
of three circular lines. The answer is A.
Puzzle #029: The Winning Arrow
------------------------------
Summary: Which of the three arrows on the right perfectly
lines up with the arrow on the left?
Solution: B. It's easy to see this if you put a piece of
paper (or something else with a straight line for an edge)
against the picture of the arrow.
-------
Go right and talk to the woman. She has a puzzle,
naturally. You have to talk to her in order to progress
with the game. She has two puzzles, so talk to her twice.
Also, examine the tree on the right for a puzzle.
Puzzle #036: The Trapped Bird
-----------------------------
Summary: Which of the three passageways leads out of the
maze?
Solution: B.
Puzzle #032: It's a Wrap
------------------------
Summary: Which picture, when rolled up, results in a flower
covering like the one on the left?
Solution: C.
Puzzle #034: Trees on an Old Road
---------------------------------
Summary: Which of the trees are farthest apart?
Solution: Obviously, this is Trees A and E, the ones on the
end of the row.
-------
The woman gives you some tea and tea ingredients. Now you
can perform the tea minigame! Just like the camera minigame
or the hamster minigame, you get various items for the tea
minigame by solving certain puzzles.
Go left. Getting the tea set allows you to go forward into
town, but first, go left and talk to the man for a puzzle.
Puzzle #037: World's Best Golfer
--------------------------------
Summary: A golfer needs to make a twenty foot putt. The
problem is that he can only do a putt that is 3, 5, 7 or 11
feet. What is the fewest number of strokes he can make the
20 foot putt in?
Solution: Two strokes, if he shoots at an angle, instead of
aiming directly for the hole.
-------
Go right and forward, into the town plaza. The man on the
left has a puzzle. The fountain to the right of the
building has a puzzle as well. The front door of the
building has another puzzle.
Puzzle #053: Boys Club
----------------------
Summary: If you move counter-clockwise or clockwise through
around this circle, crossing off every sixth person, you
will cross out all the girls before crossing out any of the
boys, provided you started with the right person. Who is
this person?
Solution: That would be the man in the upper/left, with the
bushy eyebrows and mustache. You move counter-clockwise
from him.
Puzzle #030: The Secret Message
-------------------------------
Summary: The fountain reads 8 12 RED, but it has a secret
message in it. This message tells you where everyone was,
the night after a big part.
Solution: The answer is "BED". When the fountain is full of
water, the word "RED" looks like "BED".
Puzzle #047: The Mayoral Election
---------------------------------
Summary: Three people are running for mayor, in a town of
40 people. What is the minimum number of votes you need to
win?
Solution: Each mayoral candidate will vote for himself or
herself. So really, the competition is "best out of 38",
not "best out of 40", seeing as each candidate knows where
two votes will go. Therefore, the answer is 20. 20 is the
minimum number of votes required to be assured of winning a
best out of 38 competition.
-------
Go right a screen to see the livestock competition. It
looks like fun, but it hasn't started yet.
Once you visit this area, someone new shows up in the place
where you got the tea. Go left, down and right. Talk to
this man for a puzzle.
Puzzle #052: Hat Weather
------------------------
Summary: The man wears a hat when it's sunny. He does not
wear a hat when it rains. If it's cloudy one day, he
doesn't wear a hat. If it's cloudy two days in a row, he
wears his hat. Figure out what the weather was like this
week, given this information.
Solution: There are two tricks to the puzzle. First, know
that rainy days don't count as cloudy days. Second, realize
that the Saturday before this week was a cloudy day.
Sunday: Cloudy
Monday: Sunny
Tuesday: Cloudy
Wednesday: Rainy
Thursday: Sunny
Friday: Rainy
Saturday: Sunny
-------
Go left and back up to town hall. Go left and talk to the
mailman. He talks about Mr. Anderson, the rich man in town.
Go left, inside the building, and talk to the woman there.
She also talks about Mr. Anderson. It seems his daughter
plans on leaving town soon. You must talk to both of these
people to open up the road to the Anderson residence.
Tap on the cat for a puzzle.
Puzzle #051: Flipped Cats
-------------------------
Summary: Which picture matches the picture on the left?
Solution: B.
-------
Go right, out of this house. Then, go north down the path
to the Anderson manor. Talk to the man here for a puzzle.
You also get a puzzle when you look at the field on the
left.
Puzzle #045: Baggage Claim
--------------------------
Summary: With this slider puzzle, move the baggage from the
top of the screen to the bottom.
Solution: Start moving things in a counter-clockwise
fashion, and eventually, this frees up enough space so you
can move the baggage.
Move the two green blocks on the left up. Move the two red
blocks left, and move the rightmost green block down. Move
the yellow and purple blocks right.
With the two green blocks on the left, move the lower one
right and up. This gives you room to move a red block up,
and the other red block gets moved left. Move the rightmost
green block down into the exit area, the move the purple
block down and right.
Now, there are three empty spaces under baggage. You can
get the baggage to the exit from here, just by manipulating
blocks on the left side of the screen.
Move the baggage all the way down. Move the second from the
left green block right and up, then move the leftmost green
block all the way left. Move the upper red block up, then
move the luggage against the left-hand wall.
Move the bottom red block right and up, then move the
luggage down. Move the red block left, and move the
bottommost green block up all the way. Move the luggage to
the exit.
Puzzle #038: Moving Day
-----------------------
Summary: Someone wants to move his horses from Point A to
Point B. One horse can travel in 1 hour, one in 2, one in 6
and one in 8. He can only move two horses at once? How
quickly can he move all four horses?
Solution: Thirteen hours. Each trip from A to B will
involve bringing two horses, and each trip from B to A
involves bringing one horse. All in all, there are three
trips from A to B, and two trips from B to A. Of these five
trips, the 1 hour horse and the 2 hour horse are used three
times; the slower 4 and 6 hour horses are used once,
together on the same trip.

Go to the right, and Professor Layton talks about the
Anderson manor. Talk to the man here for a puzzle.
Puzzle #033: Fishing Net
------------------------
Summary: There is a picture of a fishing net that is
partially obscured. How many fish are in the net?
Solution: Seven.
-------
Go left and talk to Inspector Chelmey. He tried to see Mr.
Anderson, but Mr. Anderson is busy judging the livestock
competition. Chelmey then leaves.
Talk to the person here for a puzzle.
Puzzle #044: Tangled Ropes
--------------------------
Summary: You have a picture of ropes. When the red rope is
pulled into a knot, how many other ropes are going to be
inside the knot?
Solution: Zero.
-------
Go south and talk to the man here for two puzzles.
Puzzle #042: Board Splitter 1
-----------------------------
Summary: You want to make two cuts on this board, so you
have two pieces of wood. These pieces of wood will fit
together to form a square, without flipping or rotating
either of the pieces. Where do you make the cuts?
Solution: Below the top/left square. Then, move two squares
over and one square down. The other cut is below that
square.
Puzzle #043: Board Splitter 2
-----------------------------
Summary: You want to make two cuts on this board, so you
have two pieces of wood. These pieces of wood will fit
together to form a four by five rectangle, without flipping
or rotating either of the pieces. Where do you make the
cuts?
Solution: The first cut is directly above the two squares
sticking out on the left. The second cut is directly below
the two squares sticking out on the right.
-------
Head right twice, to reach the livestock competition. Two
men are fighting, so talk to them and see what's the
matter.
Puzzle #050: Misinformootion
----------------------------
Summary: Three cows are liars, and two cows tell the truth.
Cow A says D is a liar.
Cow B says C is a liar.
Cow C says A tells the truth.
Cow D says E is a liar.
Cow E says B is a liar.
Who is lying?
Solution: Cows A, C and E are liars.
-------
Once the puzzle is solved, the competition is held. The cow
named Mootilda wins. Hooray for Mootilda!
Talk to the person here for a puzzle.
Puzzle #039: A Change of Clothes
--------------------------------
Summary: Three men in suits changed clothes. No one's new
clothes are matching, only Man C isn't wearing any of his
original suit, and Man C has red pants. Who is wearing
what?
Solution: Man C has red pants. He can't have the red shirt
(which matches) or his original shirt, so he has the blue
shirt.
Man B, therefore, can't have the blue shirt. Therefore, his
original piece of clothing is his blue pants.
Since Man B has blue pants and Man C has red pants, Man A
must have the last pair of pants, star pants. His original
piece of clothing is his red shirt, therefore. Since Man A
has a red shirt and Man C has a blue shirt, Man B has a
star shirt.
Man A: Red shirt, star pants.
Man B: Star shirt, blue pants.
Man C: Blue shirt, red pants.
-------
When you try to walk left, someone gives Layton a puzzle
which identifies Mr. Anderson.
Puzzle #048: Who's Mr. Anderson?
--------------------------------
Summary: Mr. Anderson has a hat and beard. He has a cane
and a bow tie. He does not have glasses. Which person in
the picture is he?
Solution: Mr. Anderson is in the top/left corner. The wind
is blowing away his hat.
-------
Layton talks with Mr. Anderson at some length. He doesn't
know much about the Elysian Box, besides the fact that his
mother-in-law, Sophia, always searched for it. Sophia died
a year ago, so she is the person who Mr. Beluga was
referring to when, earlier in this chapter, he talked about
a woman passing.
Go left several screens, into the house. Talk to the woman
for a puzzle.
Puzzle #031: Pass the Apples
----------------------------
Summary: Johnny and Thomas have apples. If Johnny gives an
apple to Thomas, they have the same number of apples. If
Thomas gives Johnny two apples, Johnny has three times as
many apples as Thomas. How many apples does each person
have?
Solution: Johnny has seven apples and Thomas has five.

Go right twice and down. Poor Flora gets lost and
encounters a villain, but she soon reappears, looking
perfectly fine. She says someone near the train station has
talked about the Elysian Box, so we'll have to talk to him
before taking the train.
Talk to the woman here for a puzzle.
Puzzle #046: Odd Shape Out
--------------------------
Summary: The box here can be filled with three of the
blocks. Which block formation won't fit?
Solution: D.
-------
Go left and talk to both men here. They have puzzles.
Puzzle #035: Which House Where?
-------------------------------
Summary: You have four houses and four clues. Can you
figure out which house goes where?
Solution: Clue #2 is unnecessary for solving the puzzle. A
is green, B is blue, C is red, and D is yellow.
Puzzle #054: Painting the Flag
------------------------------
Summary: You have a white flag, made up of three sections.
With three different colors of paint, how many different
ways can you paint the flag? Remember, no two sections that
touch can have the same color.
Solution: There are 36 ways you can paint the flag, seeing
as the original white color of the flag can be used.
-------
Go right and down. Talk to the woman twice for two puzzles.
Puzzle #040: The Tiled Box
--------------------------
Summary: You have a die, with pictures on it. Using these
two pictures, can you figure out what the die looks like
when it is flat?
Solution: It looks like this:
(club)
(heart) (circle)
(spade) (person)
(triangle)
The heart is upside down, as is the person.
Puzzle #049: A Royal Show-Off
-----------------------------
Summary: A king has many items. He wants everyone to have a
certain item. Which one?
Solution: The telephone. The idea is that he can't use his
telephone, unless other people have telephones as well.
-------
Go left. Mr. Anderson appears, and he tells Professor
Layton that his daughter is running away. Anderson wants
his daughter back home, so he says if Layton sees her, he
should pass on the message to her.
Talk to the man here. He talks about the Elysian Box, which
he has heard of. He doesn't know where it is, and frankly,
he is more concerned about getting to the mystery
destination at the Molentary Express sometimes goes to.
Go left to the train station. Sammy won't let you onboard,
unless you have solved 30 puzzles. Once you have solved 30
puzzles, talk to him, and he gives you the last puzzle of
the chapter.
Puzzle #055: Sammy's Necklace
-----------------------------
Summary: Sammy has eight chains of seven links each. He
wants to form them into a necklace, and it costs two
dollars to cut and reseal a link. What is the cheapest he
can get his necklace for?
Solution: Fourteen dollars. You do this by breaking every
link in the eighth chain, and resealing them to connect the
seven remaining chains.
-------
The chapter ends with a cutscene. Katia, Mr. Anderson's
daughter, is boarding the train.

003d-Chapter 3: A Diverging Path
-----------------------------------------------------------
Video #14:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tG6K9TOPXQc
The chapter begins with our heroes wondering about the
rumors that the train visits some sort of phantom town, a
mysterious location that no one has ever heard of before.
You need to talk to the train employees in order to find
out more.
Go to the dining room and talk to the waiter. He says that
the train will soon enter a tunnel. Go to the kitchen and
talk to the cook. Finally, go to the observation deck and
talk to the man there.
A new character appears in Babette's carriage. He says that
when the train enters the tunnel, the deluxe carriage is
sealed off. Very suspicious!
A new character also appears in the carriage below the
dining car. She says the phantom town is haunted by a
vampire.
When you try to go to the deluxe carriage, which is below
Layton's carriage, you get a puzzle.
Puzzle #056: The Door's Code
----------------------------
Summary: The lock on the door has five symbols: a diamond,
a star, a moon, an X and a circle. They are arranged
vertically in the lock. The star is next to the moon, the X
is second from the top, the circle is above the diamond,
and the moon is two places below the diamond. What is the
order of the symbols?
Solution: They look like this:
Circle
X
Diamond
Star
Moon
-------
Once the lock is open, go into the deluxe carriage. Go
inside the room and examine it. Sammy will appear with
flowers.
Puzzle #057: Smell the Roses
----------------------------
Summary: Can you put roses on the map, so every place on
the map is covered? The smell of roses will reach for two
rooms, and it won't travel through walls. No square can
have the scent from two different roses.
Solution: There is a rose in the upper/left corner, the
upper/right corner, and the lower/right corner. A rose is
two squares above the rose in the lower/right, and a rose
in the square one above and one right of the lower/left
corner square.
-------
Video #15:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwKxS6xre14
The roses make our heroes fall asleep, just as the train
enters the tunnel. While the train is in the darkness of
the tunnel, Luke wakes up for a brief moment to see the
deluxe car...switch tracks?
Puzzle #058: In the Tunnel
--------------------------
Summary: Switch the trains, but make sure the #2 cars stay
on the same tracks.
Solution: There's a nineteen step solution:
1. Green 1 to bottom/left.
2. Green 2 to middle/left.
3. Green 3 to bottom.
4. Green 2 to top/left.
5. Green 3 to top/left.
6. Red 1 to middle/left.
7. Red 2 to top.
8. Green 1 to top.
9. Red 3 to bottom/left.
10. Green 1 to bottom/right. It is now in place.
11. Red 2 to bottom/right. It is now in place.
12. Green 3 to bottom/right. It is now in place.
13. Green 2 to bottom.
14. Green 4 to bottom.
15. Red 1 to top/left. It is now in place.
16. Green 4 to middle/left.
17. Green 2 to top/left. It is now in place.
18. Red 3 to top/left. It is now in place.
19. Green 4 to bottom/right. It is now in place.
-------
Our heroes wake up once the trains are switched. Luke tells
the Professor about this, and Layton automatically believes
him.
Then, our heroes hear that the mystery location is
Folsense. Layton looks at the ticket found on the corpse of
Dr. Schrader, and it suddenly makes sense.
Puzzle #059: A Ticket to Where?
-------------------------------
Summary: This is a ticket to Folsense. Using this
information, figure out what the missing number on the
ticket is. There's a duplicate copy of the ticket in the
instruction booklet that comes with this game, if you need
help.
Solution: There are two rows of numbers. One row is on the
top, and another is on the bottom. You can fold the ticket,
so the top halves of the numbers on top line up with the
bottom halves of the numbers on bottom. When this happens,
the two green parts of the ticket are brought together, and
the numbers look like "FOR FOLSENSE".
The missing number, therefore, has a bottom half which will
help for the letter "E". The number 2 is the number you
want.
-------
Our heroes arrive at their location. Leave the train, and
watch as our heroes step into Folsense for the first time.
It magically changes from a decrepit town to a bright,
shining town, right before our heroes' eyes. Also, our
heroes get dizzy and shake a few times before entering
town. What is going on in this town?

Talk to the postman, who you saw earlier in Dropstone. Go
forward a screen, and Flora starts talking about how she
feels tired. We'd best find her a hotel.
There are four buildings on this street. Click on any of
them for a puzzle.
Puzzle #061: Where's the Hotel?
-------------------------------
Summary: Which building is the hotel?
Solution: C. The letters of the word "hotel" appear in the
windowpanes and doorway of that building.
-------
Luke and Layton go in the hotel and get Flora a room. She's
not going to leave the hotel for the rest of the game. Go
up to her room to see her, and tap on the roses for a
puzzle.
Puzzle #062: Smell the Roses Again
----------------------------------
Summary: Can you put roses on the map, so every place on
the map is covered? The smell of roses will reach for two
rooms, and it won't travel through walls. No square can
have the scent from two different roses.
Solution: Here's a diagram, with an R where the roses go.

-------
Luke and Layton discuss the possibility that the roses that
put them to sleep in the deluxe carriage were actually
planted there, for the purpose of making them fall asleep.
Go down twice to leave the hotel. Layton thinks there is a
clue to the Elysian Box, somewhere in this town. Go down
and talk to the man to learn that there is a huge fortune
in gold, somewhere in town. Duke Herzen used to own the
fortune, but he is now dead.
Go up two screens, and you see that Mr. Beluga is making
Sammy search for something. Our heroes then find a diary,
which has many locks on it.
Video #17:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rugjW08dXrQ
Go inside the antique shop to your left. Our heroes see
that Inspector Chelmey is still on the case. The antique
shop owner is unable to help Layton, besides suggesting
that the Elysian Box could be at the Herzen Museum, at the
north part of town.
The antique owner then spies the diary. He figures out that
it can be unlocked by various old keys. Whenever you find a
key, you can unlock a new diary entry.
Leave the antique shop to see Inspector Chelmey talk to
Katia. Chelmey is suspicious, because she is also looking
for the Elysian Box.
Go north to see Stachenscarfen. He teaches you how to make
tea. Specifically, he wants you to make a cup of Belle
Classic, which is made by using the first three
ingredients: Oasis Leaf, Brisk Berry and Belle Tart Seed.
Whenever you see a person who is sweating in this game, it
means that person wants to drink some tea. For more
information, check out the tea puzzle section.
Once you serve tea to Stachenscarfen, a new person appears
here. Talk to him for a puzzle.
Puzzle #089: Flower Bed Fun
---------------------------
Summary: Given the fact that each circle has a radius of
ten feet, how large is the red area?
Solution: 400 feet. You can rearrange the red area to form
a perfect square, with sides 20 feet long (the diameter of
each circle).
-------
If you try to go left, Barton will stop you. Instead, go to
the right. You see Inspector Chelmey get confirmation that
Dr. Schrader visited Folsense at one point. Talk to the man
outside the restaurant for a puzzle.
Puzzle #086: Hat Trick
----------------------
Summary: Find the hat in the picture!
Solution: The hat is turned on its side, so that the brim
is facing left while the top is facing right. It is in the
bottom/left corner; the bottom of the hat runs against the
right side of the purple rectangle.

Go inside the photograph shop for a puzzle.
Puzzle #072: Scrambled Photos
-----------------------------
Summary: What order were the pictures taken in?
Solution: C D B A.
-------
Layton is confused as to why the puzzles look so new, if
they are so old. He also receives the final piece to the
photograph puzzle. You can solve that now, if you want to.
For more information, see the Camera puzzles section.
Leave the camera shop, then go up the stairs. There's a dog
that is blocking the exit to the right. Talk to it to learn
that we can't get the dog to leave. Instead, go to the
left.
This is the museum. Tap on the gate to see that it is
locked and we can't go inside.
Go left to a street. Talk to the woman for a puzzle.
Puzzle #117: Three Couples
------------------------------
Summary: Given the clues and the picture, figure out which
man did not marry one of the sisters.
Solution: B. Most of the clues provide extra, unnecessary
information, in an attempt to confuse you.
-------
Go south to reach the cabaret. From here, you can go left
to reach Granny Riddleton's. You can go down/right to reach
the area that is north of the antique shop.
Of course, before visiting any of those places, you want to
learn what Mr. Beluga was doing at the cabaret. Talk to the
woman for a puzzle.
Puzzle #070: The Jeweled Necklace
----------------------------------
Summary: Can you divide this necklace into three parts of
equal value?
Solution: Draw a divide between 1000 and 600, 900 and 1200,
and 800 and 1100.
-------
Granny Riddleton isn't home right now, so there's really no
reason to go to her place. Instead, go down/right to the
area north of the antique shop. Pretty much all of the
characters in the south part of town now have puzzles, and
we're going to solve all of them.
Go south, to the area outside the antique shop. Talk to the
girl here for a puzzle.
Puzzle #093: How Old Am I?
--------------------------
Summary: The girl's sister is twice as she is, and in five
years, she will be her sister's age. The sister is a third
of the mother's age, and the difference between her mother
and father's age is the same as her age.
Solution: She is five years old. We know this, because she
is half as old as her sister, and it takes five years for
her to reach her sister's age. Therefore, five years is
half of her sister's age.

puzzle.
Puzzle #063: Numbered Cards
---------------------------
Summary: We have cards 1 through 6 placed in two rows of
three. The sum of the numbers in the bottom row is one more
than the sum of the numbers on the top row. The sum of the
right-hand column is five, the 1 is on the left-hand
column, and the 5 is left of the 4.
Solution: The cards go like this:
1 6 3
5 4 2
-------
Leave the antique shop and go south twice. Talk to the man
for a puzzle.
Puzzle #060: Plaza Puzzle
-------------------------
Summary: Divide the donut into two identically-shaped
parts.
Solution: You want to draw a circle, one which is half as
big as the large circle.
-------
Go north and into the hotel. The man here has a puzzle.
Puzzle #115: Tricky Digits
--------------------------
Summary: You have two one-digits numbers, X and Y. XY + YX
= what?
Solution: YX + XY is a multiple of eleven. A is the answer.

Exit the hotel, and go north five times. You're in a new
area, where our heroes immediately notice a strange
watchtower. Talk to the man here for a puzzle.
Puzzle #085: The Missing Shape
------------------------------
Summary: Which of these three shapes fits into the fourth
space in the pattern?
Solution: The answer is B. Tilt your head 90 degrees to the
left, and you'll see that the shapes resemble numbers.
-------
There are two buildings here. On the right is the grocery
store, and on the left is the clocktower. The man in the
grocery store has a lot of garlic to protect him from
vampires. Go up the stairs of the tower to meet the crazy
man who is afraid of vampires. He's got a puzzle for you.
Puzzle #072: Top of the Tower
-----------------------------
Summary: If you're in the tower, what part of the town can
you NOT see?
Solution: You can't see the outside of the tower.
-------
Solving this puzzle gives you the mystery of the vampire-
haunted castle. It also causes the Herzen Museum to open,
so go all the way back to the museum and head through the
gates.
Sammy and Mr. Beluga are here. Mr. Beluga is yelling at
Sammy. He seems to be looking for the Elysian Box, too.
Layton notes the symbol on the floor here matches the
symbol on the cover of the old diary, and suddenly,
Professor Layton figures things out. We need to go back to
the hotel and find Inspector Chelmey!
Video #21:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhbANjZgZoI
Before going to the hotel, step forward and talk to the man
here for a puzzle.
Puzzle #106: The Knight's Tour 1
--------------------------------
Summary: Move a knight around a four by four chessboard,
while having it step on each tile once.
Solution: Move it down, up, left, down, up, left, down, up,
down, right and up.
-------
Go back to the south part of town and go inside the hotel.
Inspector Chelmey will talk after you have solved 50
puzzles.
Layton asks to see the picture which was on Dr. Schrader's
corpse. Sadly, there is a hole in Chelmey's pocket, so the
photo has been scattered all around town, in 15 pieces.
Puzzle #110: Chelmey's Route
----------------------------
Summary: Given the clues and the diagram, what route did
Chelmey take?
Solution: The trick is that he turns at a block which has a
coffee shop, not at a corner which has a coffee shop. He
goes right, down, down, right, right, down and right.
003f-Chapter 5: Shadows on the Street Corner
-----------------------------------------------------------
Our heroes have to go to the northeast part of town to
start the search for the photo parts. Before that, talk to
both men here for puzzles.
Puzzle #111: How Many Turns?
----------------------------
Summary: Chelmey sent officers onto the map, with the
express instruction to never take U-turns. Which officers
are lying about the number of turns they took?
Solution: If the officers can't take U-turns, then they
must have taken an even number of turns. The two liars are
the ones who give odd numbers.
Puzzle #092: Precious Metals
----------------------------
Summary: Select five tiles which touch each other. Which
tiles give you the most money?
Solution: Select five tiles in the lower/right corner,
which cover a gold piece, two bronze pieces and a silver
piece.
-------
You might as well go upstairs and talk to Flora, if you
want. Then, leave the hotel. We're going to go to the
northeast part of town, but as you might expect, there are
several puzzles to solve along the way.
Video #22:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aYKEdcI1ec
Go north and into the antique shop. The man there has a new
puzzle.
Puzzle #064: Stones in a Vase
-----------------------------
Summary: A vase has 101 stones in it. 50 are black and 51
are white. You can pull out as many stones as you want, and
if the number of white stones you pull out equals the
number of black stones, you get a gold coin for each match.
How many stones should you remove to give yourself the
biggest payoff?
Solution: Remove 100 stones, which could result in 50
matches, and therefore, 50 coins. No matter how many stones
you remove, the odds will always be about 50% as to whether
or not you get any matches.
-------
Leave the antique shop and go north twice. Talk to the
woman for a puzzle.
Puzzle #071: How Old is She?
----------------------------
Summary: A man is 20 years old. He is talking to a girl.
When he was her age, she was half of his current age. How
old is she?
Solution: When he was her age, she was 10. Therefore, 10 is
the difference between their ages, times two. She must be
five years younger than him, making her 15.
-------
Go north and talk to the girl for a puzzle.
Puzzle #120: Tug of War
-----------------------
Summary: We have a number of horses and scenarios where the
horses are equally strong.
A + B + C + D = E + F + G + H
H + C + B = G + A
D + A = F + H + E
What are E + F equal to?
Solution: The first and third ones are similar enough that
you can subtract D + A (which is E + F + H) from both
sides, leaving you with the equation B + C = G. When you
subtract that from the second equation, you get H = A. When
you subtract that from the third equation, you get D = F +
E. So your answer is D.
-------
From here, go right twice. Check out the mean bulldog to
see that it is still blocking our way. We will have to get
food to distract it. Food is available at the grocery
store.
Go left twice, then north. Talk to the girl for a puzzle.
Puzzle #075: Candy for Five
---------------------------
Summary: Divide the box into five equal portions, each with
an identical group of candy.
Solution: It looks like this, if each letter represents a
different group of candy:
AABBB
ABBCC
AACCE
DDCEE
DDDEE
-------
Go into the grocery store on the right. Talk to the man for
a puzzle and some food for the dog.
Puzzle #074: PU!
----------------
Summary: We have a diagram here. Which two holes can be
plugged up to prevent the man from smelling garlic?
Solution: The man's two nostrils.
-------
Solving the puzzle gives you food for the bulldog. Hooray!
Video #23:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36lemAIHN9A
A puzzle is here in the grocery store, in the cans in front
of the grocery store.
Puzzle #098: Jars and Cans 1
----------------------------
Summary: Rearrange the items so the jars and cans are all
together. The trick is that you can only move a pair of
items at a time.
Solution: Move the rightmost pair all the way right. Grab
the red dot which is second from the left and move that
pair as far right as possible. Move the pair of green cans
as far left as possible, then move the pair of reddish cans
as far right as possible.
-------
Exit the grocery store and go south. Go right twice, to the
area with the bulldog. A new character is here, with a
puzzle.
Puzzle #113: A Stack of Dice
----------------------------
Summary: We have three dice stacked on each other. There
are two places where two faces of a die touch each other.
In both of these places, the sum of the touching faces is
five. Also, the bottom die has a one on the side. Which
number is on top?
Solution: Six. Opposing sides of a die equal seven, and the
top and bottom of the middle die (which are opposing sides)
both have to be less than five. Therefore, they are 3 and
4. The three is on the bottom, to match with a two, because
it can't be the four, seeing as four matches with one, and
the one on the bottom die is already in place. If the three
is on the bottom, the four is on the top, and it matches
with one to make five. The face opposite of the one has to
be a six.
-------
You can feed the bulldog now. He will become happy and let
you pass. Layton and Luke can now explore this new area.
First, though, go south for two puzzles. The man on the
left has a puzzle, as does the man inside the camera shop.
Puzzle #069: Copying the Menu
-----------------------------
Summary: A menu has 6 sides. Our man wants to make a copy
of it, but the machine only copies two sides at once. What
is the fewest number of times he can use the machine to get
a complete menu?
Solution: Three. Three turns of two sides each equal six
sides.
Puzzle #096: A Ghostly Puzzle
------------------------------
Summary: Which picture matches the ghost?
Solution: Picture B.
-------
Return to the area with the bulldog. Go through the
northeast area.
Your goal in this area is to find the six photograph scraps
which are scattered around.
Piece 1 is on the first screen. Go north. Piece 2 is on the
next screen. Go through the north/left exit to find Piece
3. Go south, then go through the north/right exit.
Our heroes meet Katia. She is looking for something, but
she won't say what. She leaves, and Piece 4 is in plain
view.
Go north and talk to the man for Piece 5. Go inside the
building to find Piece 6. That's all six pieces of the
photograph that are here in the northeast alley!
Video #24:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5gErW99xR4
There are also two puzzles in this alley. One is in the
building here, on the left wall.
Puzzle #086: Perplexing Figures
-------------------------------
Summary: We have a series of figures. Can you figure out
the pattern and use it to determine what the first figure
should be?
Solution: The figures are letters, mirrored. Fill every
spot, except the two along the bottom of the screen, to
make the letter A and its mirror image.
-------
Go south to the bottom of the alley and talk to the woman
for a puzzle.
Puzzle #083: Pancake Stacks 2
-----------------------------
Summary: Repeat Pancake Stacks 1, this time with four
pancakes.
Solution: If the plates are A, B and C, going from left to
right...
Move A to B.
Move A to C.
Move B to C.
Move A to B.
Move C to A.
Move C to B.
Move A to B. Now you have three pancakes on B.
Move A to C.
Move B to C.
Move B to A.
Move C to A.
Move B to A. Now you have two pancakes on C.
Move A to B.
Move A to C.
Move B to C.
-------
Leave the alley. You have to find all the remaining photo
scraps, but fortunately, they're all really close to each
other; they form a trail leading to the hotel. One is here,
in the hands of Hopper.
Go left. Talk to the person here for a piece of the photo,
along with a puzzle.
Puzzle #112: Turn on the Light
------------------------------
Summary: The light is on, no matter if A, B and C are
touching. Draw the fewest number of connections possible to
make this statement true.
Solution: Connect the battery to the light, completely
ignoring A, B and C.
-------
Go left for another photo piece. Go up/left for another. Go
down twice, and pick up one in front of the cabaret.
Go down again. Talk to the boy for a puzzle and photo
piece.
Puzzle #101: Disappearing Act 1
-------------------------------
Summary: Get rid of all the pegs in the peg solitaire game,
except one.
Solution: Move the middle piece right, then the bottom
piece up. The left piece goes right, the right piece goes
left, and the top piece goes down.
-------
Go down and talk to the girl for a piece of photo. Go down
a screen for another one. Go down one more screen and talk
to the man. He says the final photo piece is at the gate
which leads to the Herzen mansion.
Video #25:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTZH8-oKm-o
So now you have to go all the way north, to the area with
the grocery store and the watchtower. To the left, you will
find the gate. Pick up the final photo piece for a puzzle.
Puzzle #116: The Torn Photo
---------------------------
Summary: This is a jigsaw puzzle.
Solution: This puzzle is difficult, just because it's a
strange picture. The white outlines mark the edges of the
photo, so put those parts in first. The top and bottom have
black parts next to the edge, whereas the left and right
sides have yellowish parts along the edge.
The picture in the middle is of an evil-looking goat. I
really recommend watching my video to see what the final
solution looks like. It's rather difficult to assemble
without help.
-------
Professor Layton explains that this is a picture of the
Elysian Box. A piece of the picture blows off, and our
heroes decide to go back to the hotel. Coincidentally,
Inspector Chelmey has figured out who the murderer is, and
he gathered all the suspects there.
003g-Chapter 6: The Road to Herzen Castle
-----------------------------------------------------------
Video #26:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFfTSL48-Zo
Return to the hotel and a number of cutscenes ensue. First,
Chelmey explains why Sammy Thunder is the most likely
suspect. Second, Flora says something odd which gives
Layton a clue. Third, Layton accuses Flora of being the
culprit.
Fourth, Flora is revealed to be Don Paolo, Layton's self-
proclaimed arch-nemesis. He didn't kill Dr. Schrader, but
he DID steal the Elysian Box. Don runs off, with Barton and
Chelmey in close pursuit.
Fifth, Layton finds the real Elysian Box. Sixth, Mr. Beluga
reveals that he is the heir to the Herzen Fortune, meaning
he owns the entire town. The box is, therefore, legally
his. Seventh, Beluga's right to have the box is refuted.
Eighth, Katia asks for the box. Ninth, someone runs in,
with claims that the vampire at the Herzen Mansion has
taken someone! Tenth, Layton and Luke decide to open the
Elysian Box, alone.
Video #27:

Go up the stairs and watch the scene. The Elysian Box,
which kills everyone who opens it, is...is...empty?
Woah.
Leave the hotel and talk to Sammy. He says that he just got
the museum to be opened for our heroes, so that is
obviously our next destination.
Go to the museum, by going up four spaces, then right, then
up twice. The man outside of the museum has two puzzles for
you.
Puzzle #107: The Knight's Tour 2
--------------------------------
Summary: Move a knight around the chess board, landing on
every square. It is a six by five chessboard this time.
Solution: Go right, up, down, right, down, left, up, up,
right, down, right, left, down, up, left, right, up/right,
right, down, down, left, up, down, right, right, down,
left, left and up. This is basically going around the board
in a clockwise fashion.
Puzzle #108: The Knight's Tour 3
--------------------------------
Summary: Move a knight around the chess board, landing on
every square. It is a six by six chessboard this time.
Solution: Move down, left, down, right, right, up, left,
left, up, right, and right. You are now in the upper/right
corner. Move down, right, down, left, up, up/left, down,
down, right, left, down, right, up, up, right, left and up.
The top row is now full, and you're in the top row. Move
down, left, down, right, left, right and up.
-------

Go down a screen and tap the fountain for a puzzle.
Puzzle #090: The Unusual Fountain
---------------------------------
Summary: The fountain here has eleven spouts, and it can
recreate any two digit number, with the spout in the middle
serving as a tens place, and the ten on the outside serving
for the ones place. Which spout is unneeded?
Solution: Spout J, the tenth ones place spout.
-------
Go inside the museum and talk to the man. There are two
things to look at on this screen: the display case in the
middle and the statue directly above it.
Go right. There are two things to look at on this screen:
the roped-off portrait in the middle, and the portrait
above the display in the left. Looking at all four things
in the museum gives you a lot of information about the
Herzens.
Duke Herzen became rich after the gold mining started here
in Folsense. The Duke had two sons: Anton and Mr. Beluga.
Beluga left the town, fifty years ago. The other son,
Anton, still lives in Herzen Castle. He is the man who is
rumored to be a vampire.
Go left and talk to the museum owner again. He says that
Layton should go to the mines for a clue behind the mystery
of the Elysian Box.
Leave the museum. You can go directly to the mines at this
point, which are beyond the gate left of the grocery store,
but a lot of people have puzzles, so I'm going to solve
them all before leaving for the mine.
Go right from the museum. Talk to the man here for a
puzzle.
Puzzle #102: Disappearing Act 2
-------------------------------
Summary: It's peg solitaire again. Make all of the pegs,
except one, disappear.
Solution: Move the second from the right peg right. Move
the second from the left peg right. Move the bottommost peg
up and right. Move the topmost peg down. Move the rightmost
peg left three times.
-------
Go north and talk to the woman for a puzzle.
Puzzle #084: Pancake Stacks 2
-----------------------------
Summary: Solve the Tower of Hanoi puzzle with three
pancakes.
Solution: Simple! If the plates from left to right are
Plate A, Plate B and Plate C...
1. Move a pancake from A to C.
2. Move a pancake from A to B.
3. Move a pancake from C to B.
4. Move a pancake from A to C.

Puzzle #073: Can Conundrum
--------------------------
Summary: All the cans in the diagram are empty, except for
one which is full of water (and therefore, much heavier
than the others). Which can is the heavy one?
Solution: A.
-------
Go south three times and talk to the man for a puzzle.
Puzzle #103: Disappearing Act 3
-------------------------------
Summary: Do more peg solitaire, where you want to get rid
of all the pegs except one.
Solution: Move the second-from-the-right peg in the third-
from-the-top row down. Move the second-from-the-right peg
in the third-from-the-top row down. Move the rightmost peg
in the bottom row left.
Move the second-from-the-left peg in the second-from-the-
bottom row to the right. Move the middle peg in the second-
from-the-top row to the left and down. Move the leftmost
peg right.
Move the middle peg in the leftmost column up. Move the
rightmost peg left twice. Move the bottommost peg up twice,
right, down and right.
-------
Go up one screen and talk to Sammy for a puzzle.
Puzzle #067: Sammy's Work Week
------------------------------
Summary: If today is his day off, and he wasn't off
yesterday, he has another day off. If he worked today, and
he didn't have a day off two days ago, he works tomorrow.
In a year of 365 days, how many days does he work?
Solution: 219. Sammy works three days in a row, then has a
two day break. This cycle repeats.
-------
Go up four screens and talk to the girl for a puzzle.
Puzzle #109: Walking the Dog
----------------------------
Summary: A girl walks two one foot per second, and her
father walks two feet per second. The dog runs five feet
per second. The girl and father are ten feet away, and they
start walking in the same direction. By the time the dad
catches up to the girl, how far does the dog run?
Solution: The dog runs 50 feet, as it takes ten seconds for
the dad to catch up to his daughter, seeing as he gets one
foot closer to her every second.
-------
Go up a screen.

Move the topmost peg in the second-from-the-left column
down. Move the peg in the bottommost row up. Move the
leftmost peg right. Move the bottom peg in the left column
up and right. Move the bottommost peg up and right.
-------
Go in the store. Another puzzle is in the cans below the
cash register.
Puzzle #099: Jars and Cans 2
----------------------------
Summary: Rearrange the items so the jars and cans are all
together. The trick is that you can only move a pair of
items at a time.
Solution: Move the rightmost pair all the way right. Grab
the red dot which is fourth from the left and move that
pair as far right as possible.
Grab the red dot which is second from the right, and move
that pair as far left as possible. Grab the rightmost dot
and move that pair as far right as possible. Then, grab the
leftmost dot and move that pair as far right as possible.
------
Leave the grocery store. Those are all the puzzles in town!
Go left, and forward through the gate. Talk to the man
twice for two puzzles.
Puzzle #087: Different Suits
----------------------------
Summary: Arrange the board so each row, column and diagonal
has four cards, each one from a different suit.
Solution: S for spade, C for Club, H for Heart and D for
Diamond give you:
DHCS
SCHD
HDSC
CSDH
Puzzle #105: Disappearing Act 5
-------------------------------
Summary: Do more peg solitaire, where you want to get rid
of all the pegs except one.
Solution: Grab the second-from-the-top peg in the third-
from-the-right column and move it right and down. Grab the
second-from-the-top peg in the third-from-the-left column
and move it up, right and down. Grab the second-from-the-
bottom peg in the third-from-the-left column and move it
left, up and right. Grab the second-from-the-bottom peg in
the third-from-the-right column and move it down, left and
up. Finally, move the peg in the rightmost column left.
You just did the same basic pattern in all four sides,
clearing the outside area. Now you have a diamond shape.
Move the topmost peg down. Take the second-from-the-top peg
in the middle column, and move it right, up, left, left,
down and right.
Move the middle peg in the top row to the right. Move the
bottommost peg up. Move the leftmost peg right twice.
-------
Go left to the mines. Go forward to go inside and tap on
the door to find a puzzle.
Puzzle #079: The Gear Switch

Puzzle #078: A Maze of Doors
----------------------------
Summary: You want to travel through all the rooms, going
through the doors as you do so. However, one door is facing
the wrong way, preventing you from accomplishing this feat.
Which door faces the wrong way?
Solution: Select the door connecting the middle square to
the square below it.
-------
Go left. Try to go down the elevator for a puzzle.
Puzzle #080: The Elevator Switch

Tap on the elevator to go down. Then tap on the door of the
safe.
Puzzle #081: The Old Safe
-------------------------
Summary: Using the clues, determine what the proper code to
the safe is.
Solution: The code is 0 1 5 4. The first combination tells
you those are the four numbers in the code, and the third
combination tells you where the 0 and 1 go. The second
combination tells you where the 5 and 4 go.
-------
Layton and Luke finally find the journal they've been
looking for. It seems to indicate that everyone in town got
sick, after the miners found a new kind of ore. Layton
decides that the next place he should go to is the castle
with the vampire inside.
When you try to leave the mines by going up the lift, a
puzzle appears.
Puzzle #082: Restarting the Lift
--------------------------------
Summary: Connect the wires in the puzzle, which is hard to
do because there are extra wires, making the diagram look
like a maze.
Solution: The leftmost circuit in the top row connects with
the rightmost circuit in the bottom row. The third from the
left circuit in the top row connects to the leftmost
circuit in the bottom row.

Go up lift and leave the mines. Along the way, you meet
Pavel, a character from the first Layton game. He has a
puzzle for you.
Puzzle #077: Balancing Ornaments
--------------------------------
Summary: There are three types of ornaments. One type is
one ounce, another type is two ounces, and the third type
is three ounces. Determine the weights of the three
different ornaments, then figure out which ornament goes in
the missing spot in order to have the hanger balance.
Solution: Put the crescent moon in the place. The moon is
the lightest of the three ornaments.
-------
Go south twice, and you meet with the photographer. He
talks with Layton for about a minute, but all he says are
rather vague things about the mystery of Folsense.
Go right, then up through the gate. Tap on the lantern for
a puzzle, and tap on the other lantern for a puzzle.
Puzzle #121: Light the Forest 1
-------------------------------
Summary: Put lanterns on the various roads to fill them
with light. Use as few lanterns as possible.
Solution: You need four lanterns, because this is a four by
four grid. There are three diagonal roads, so you'll have
to place a lantern near each of them.

Summary: Move Layton across the ice to the goal.
Solution: Go up, right, up, left, down, left, down, right,
down, right, up, left and up.
-------
This time, you have to move across the ice to cross it.
Layton and Luke arrive at Herzen Castle. Move forward, and
Luke's legs freeze up when crossing the bridge.
Puzzle #100: A Rickety Bridge
-----------------------------
Summary: Luke's legs have frozen up, so Layton will have to
be very specific in telling Luke where to step. The first
trick to this puzzle is that he can step either one or
three planks ahead with each step. The second trick is that
his last step is already listed onscreen, so you might have
to work backwards from there.
Solution: For convenience, a step that goes up three planks
will be called "three steps", and a step that goes up only
one plank will be called "one step".
Take one step with the left foot, one step with the right
foot, three steps with the left foot, three steps with the
right foot, three steps with the left foot, one step with
the right foot, one step with the left foot, three steps
with the right foot, and one step with the left foot.

Our heroes meet Parcelle outside of the castle. He is
convinced that Duke Anton is a vampire, and he runs away
scared. Professor Layton and Luke are braver than the
postman, however, so they step inside the castle.

You can't enter the castle unless you have solved 80
puzzles. Once you've done so, tap on the door. Nigel the
manservant takes a look at the Elysian Box and decides that
Duke Anton is the best person to answer any questions about
it.
Anton isn't much help, but he prepares a room for Layton
and Luke, so they can stay the night. Once our heroes get
there, they talk for a bit about Anton, and they decide to
search the room.
There are two paintings in the room. Examine both of them.
The one on the right gives you a puzzle.
Puzzle #130: The Strange Painting
---------------------------------
Summary: Circle the thing which is strange about this
painting.
Solution: Circle the floor below Anton. They are the only
things in the room which are reflected on the polished
floor.
-------
A strange scene occurs, in which Layton and Luke are
somehow transported inside the painting from fifty years
ago. Once the people in the painting notice them,
everyone's eyes start to glow red.
Layton and Luke wake up to find that Anton has them tied
up, in the basement. Escape seems like the best course of
action here.
Puzzle #131: How to Escape?
---------------------------
Summary: A man is tied up with rope that loops around
various poles. He can run away, but the rope will get
caught on one or more poles. Select all the poles that
prevent his escape.
Solution: Select the middle pole, on the right-hand side.
-------
Video #35:

Time to escape the castle! Examine the door for a slider
puzzle.
Puzzle #133: Grab the Key
-------------------------
Summary: Move the key from the top of the puzzle to the
bottom.
Solution: This is a slider puzzle. Move the yellow block
down to get it out of the way for now. Then, you start
working clockwise. Move the upper red block right and the
left green block up. Move the right red block down and to
the left, in the bottom/left corner.
Bring the yellow block up and right, into the bottom/right
corner. Now it's time to move counter-clockwise. Move the
bottom red block right, the left green block down, the top
red block left into the top/left corner, and the right
green block left. Now, move the yellow piece in the
top/right corner.
Move the bottom red block right and up, and the bottom
green block right, so it is under the red block you just
moved. Move the left red block all the way down, and the
top green block all the way left and down.
Move the key down and left, then move the yellow block left
and up. Now the yellow block is where the key was. From
here, you solve this puzzle by going in clockwise fashion
again.
Move the key right. Move the top green block up and right.
Move the left red block up. Move the bottom green block
left, move the right red block down and left. Move the key
down into the bottom/right corner.
Move the top green block right. Move the top red block
right. Move the bottom green block up. Move the bottom red
block left. Move the key to the exit.
-------
Try to exit through the door in the upper/left. It's
locked, and the way to open it is by entering the door in
the bottom/left.
Layton talks a bit about the boiler here before starting a
puzzle.
Puzzle #134: Steam Power
------------------------
Summary: Send steam into boiler #2, but not boilers #1 or
3.
Solution: Do this by opening three valves: the one directly
below boiler #3, the valve up/left of that valve, and the
bottom valve on the third-from-the-left column.
-------
Leave the boiler room, then go through the upper/left door.
Tap on the vent against the right wall for a puzzle.
Puzzle #135: The Magic Lock
---------------------------
Summary: Solve the magic square.
Solution: It looks like this:
8 2 3 5
5 3 2 8
1 7 6 4
4 6 7 1
-------
Go through the vent to reach the dining room, with Nigel.
He has a puzzle.

Puzzle #136: The Hidden Door
----------------------------
Summary: Follow the obscure instructions to locate the
hidden door.
Solution: Using the memo function, blacken out all the
tiles with a star on them. Those would be the small tiles
with ONE star on them; ignore the large stars which cover
more than one tile. When all the tiles are blackened out,
you clearly see an arrow pointing to the tile which is the
solution.
-------
Go down twice to the castle entrance. You can now leave for
the town if you want, but Layton is determined not to leave
until the mystery is solved.
You get a chance to save your game. This is a great place
to save, as you will have about a half hour of gameplay
after this point, during which you cannot save.
Check out the painting of Anton on the right hand wall for
a puzzle.
Puzzle #132: Sharing Paintings
------------------------------
Summary: We have five pieces of art, worth various prices.
The older brother gets twice as much money as the younger
one, and the appraiser gets one painting. Which painting
does the appraiser get?
Solution: There's only one way to divide things so the
older brother gets twice as much as the younger, with one
painting left over. The appraiser gets Painting E. The
younger brother gets Painting B, and the older brother gets
the remaining three paintings.
-------
Go up the stairs and talk to Katia. She knows Anton
somehow, but she won't explain what's going on until Layton
and Luke are safely out of the castle.
Anton appears while our heroes try to escape. He is shocked
to see Katia, and he mistakenly believes that she is
Sophia, the woman he met at the ball. He also mistakenly
believes that she is in love with Professor Layton. Anton
then takes out a sword and prepares to fight Layton.
Puzzle #137: One True Sword
---------------------------
Summary: A true warrior always keeps his blade in hand.
Which of the swords is real?
Solution: The one in the hand of the suit of armor, in the
lower/right.
-------
Layton and Anton swordfight for a minute or so, until Anton
runs out of energy. Katia then interrupts, and explains
that Anton is her grandfather. She looks like her
grandmother, Sophia, who left Anton fifty years ago, when
she became pregnant.
Video #37:

Anton thought Sophia ran away with another man, but no. She
left because she was pregnant with Anton's baby. Further,
according to Layton's explanation, the entire town of
Folsense is a hallucination.
Anton is upset when he hears this, and he continues trying
to attack Layton. In his rage, he ends up destroying the
entire castle.
Layton has now figured out the mystery of the Elysian box.
The hallucinogenic gas inside the box was released whenever
it was opened, and that's what caused the deaths of the
people who opened the box.
Anton then reveals the true purpose of the box. It was
designed to be opened by Sophia.
Puzzle #138: The Elysian Box
----------------------------
Summary: The sun rises when you and I meet, and when the
wind blows, you will know my heart. What does this mean?
Solution: Rotate the boy and girl so they are facing each
other. Then, slide the sun upwards. Then, blow into the DS
microphone to simulate wind.
-------
Surprisingly, the letter inside the box isn't the one Anton
wrote. It's one which was written by Sophia, shortly before
she died. She still loved him, even after fifty years.
Video #38:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaJmLGv3heE
The game ends shortly after this. Anton and Katia become
good friends, and Professor Luke and Layton leave to go
back home, satisfied that all their new friends will live
happily ever after. Better yet, it turns out that Dr.
Schrader isn't dead after all. Hooray!
Some bonus material is now unlocked, and all of the various
extra puzzles and bonuses are discussed in the following
sections.
004-Hamster Fitness and the Animal Lover's House
-----------------------------------------------------------
Video #39:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BjtQjz724E
Once you meet the chef in the kitchen of the Molentary
Express, you get a hamster. This hamster will find hint
coins for Professor Layton during the game, but first, you
need to get it in shape by doing the hamster fitness
challenge.
If you can get the hamster to perform a thirty step
workout, you unlock the Animal Lover's house, in the
bonuses section.
The hamster fitness challenge is inside Layton's briefcase,
and it involves placing various items on the grid. The
different items have different effects, so you need to be
strategic about where you put the various items, in order
to ensure that the hamster has the longest workout
possible.
You get items for the hamster fitness challenge when...
1. You first get the hamster, in Chapter One.
2. You return Tom to Babette, in Chapter One.
3. You solve puzzle 32.
4. You solve puzzle 34.
5. You solve puzzle 56.
6. You solve puzzle 58.
7. You solve puzzle 63.
8. You solve puzzle 68.
9. You solve puzzle 75.
10. You solve puzzle 83.
11. You solve puzzle 96.
12. You solve puzzle 99.
13. You solve puzzle 102.
14. You solve puzzle 103.
15. You solve puzzle 113.
There are various ways to get the hamster to have a thirty
step workout. Here is the solution I got for a forty-two
step workout:
_WJ___LF
_____B__
__P_H__H
SL_____J
________
____A__A
W = Wall
J = Jack in the box
L = Light bulb
F = Flower
S = Stump
A = Apple
P = Pool
B = Sandbox
H = House
There is probably a solution which results in the hamster
taking even more steps, seeing as I left one row completely
blank, and I never used the trampoline. In any case, get
the hamster down to fitness level 1 and have him do a
workout which is thirty steps or more. This unlocks three
puzzles in the Animal Lover's House, in the bonuses
section.
Puzzle #145: 500 Pearls
-----------------------
Summary: The magician wants a number under 500 which is
divisible by 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7, but not 4. Divide this
number by 2, then add 1.
Solution: Your answer will be 211. The magician's number is
420. I'm not entirely sure I understand this puzzle, but
that's the solution.
Puzzle #146: Angles in a Box
----------------------------
Summary: We have a picture of a cube, with dots in the
center of three faces of the cube. If lines are drawn
between the three dots, how large is the angle?
Solution: The angle is 120 degrees.
Puzzle #147: Sliding Labyrinth
------------------------------
Summary: It's a slider puzzle! Put all eight pieces where
they belong, according to the clues given.
Solution: Ah, this is the kind of slider puzzle I can solve
easily! The three by three puzzle looks like this:
1 2 3
4 5 6
7 8 9
1 is the piece with a black dot on it. 2 is the piece with
roads that connect down and right. 3 is the piece with a
horizontal pathway. 4 is the piece with three roads. 4 is
the piece with four roads. 6 is the piece with the water. 7
is the piece with roads that connect left and up. 8 is the
piece with the X on it. 9 is the empty spot.
The way to solve the slider puzzle is by getting the
leftmost column in place. First, put piece 7 in its spot.
Then, get piece 4 in the place of piece 1. Get piece 1 in
the place of piece 2. That way, you can slide pieces 4 and
1 into their proper locations, thus finishing the leftmost
column. You don't have to move any of those pieces again.
Next, let's get pieces 2 and 3 in place. Put piece 3 is
spot 2, and put piece 2 in spot 5. That way, you can easily
slide 2 and 3 where they're supposed to go. From there,
just spin pieces 5, 6 and 8 around until they're in the
proper positions, and the puzzle is solved!
005-Camera Puzzles
-----------------------------------------------------------
Video #40:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnR2Ijyfewc
When you solve certain puzzles in this game, you get a
camera piece. Specifically, this happens when you solve
puzzles 12, 21, 26, 27, 29, 38, 42, 43, and 72. Add that to
the camera piece that's inside the camera when you first
get it, and that makes ten pieces in all!
Now, you just need to fit all ten pieces inside the camera.
Fortunately, the pieces will always be listed in the same
order, inside the toolbox. From left to right, let's call
them Pieces 1 – 10.
Piece 1 goes in the upper/left corner. The end with two
spikes sticking out is facing down.
Piece 2 goes in the upper/right corner. The white part
sticks out of the top of the camera. That's because it's
the button you press down in order to take photos.
Piece 3 fits in the top of the camera, in the area that
sticks up. It is directly right of Piece 4, and it is wider
than it is tall.
Piece 4 goes directly under Piece 3. This is the camera
lens. The part that sticks out faces to the right.
Piece 5 is rotated so it looks like an upside-down L. The
smaller end fits right in the gap between Pieces 3 and 4.
Piece 6 goes on the bottom of the camera, under Piece 4. It
is wider than it is tall.
Piece 7, the smallest one, goes up/right of Piece 6. You
might want to hold off on placing this one, until the other
ones are in place.
Piece 8 goes against the right-hand side, to fit under the
piece in the upper/right. This piece is taller than it is
wide.
Piece 9 goes in the bottom/left. It is taller than it is
wide, and the part that sticks out slightly faces right.
Piece 10 goes in the bottom/right. It is wider than it is
tall.
The most common mistake is having piece 7, the smallest
piece, upside-down. Make sure the diagonal edge of Piece 7
is facing up. The second most common mistake is mixing up
pieces 10 and 6, which are the exact same shape.
Once the camera pieces are in order, you can take pictures!
In nine locations, you have to take pictures. This is a
minigame. You can look at the pictures in Layton's
briefcase whenever you want, and two pictures will appear:
one on the top screen and one on the bottom. Find all three
differences between the two pictures, and a hidden puzzle
will appear in that location!
Find all three differences between nine photographs, and
you unlock the musician's house, in the bonuses section.
In this section, I will describe all nine pictures, each
with three differences, and the nine puzzles the pictures
unlock.
Photo 1: Hotel Room. The three differences are:

worked 4 days. Later on, C decided to pay A and B for doing
his share of the work. He gave them nine coins overall, but
how much did each person get?
Solution: A got 6 coins and B got 3. This is because A
worked two extra days, and B worked one extra day, so A
deserves twice as much as B.

007-Tea Puzzles
-----------------------------------------------------------
Video #44:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAKMfz_b6u4
In Chapter Two, Professor Layton has to solve Puzzle #36,
the Trapped Bird. When he does this, he gets a tea set.
In Chapter Four, when Layton first exits the antique shop
and goes north, he meets Stachenscarfen, a character from
the previous Layton game. Stachenscarfen teaches Layton how
to make tea. Put three of your ingredients into to the tea
pot, in order to figure out a recipe. Then, you can serve
the tea to someone.
Stachen gets you started, by requesting a cup of Belle
Classic. This is made with the three ingredients that
Layton always has: Oasis Leaf, Brisk Berry and Belle Tart
Seed. Brew the teat to learn what the recipe is, then serve
it to Stachen.
The challenge to the tea puzzle is threefold.
1. Find all of the tea ingredients.
2. Figure out all of the tea recipes.
3. Find all the thirsty people and give them the correct
tea.
The tea ingredients, and where you find them, are as
follows:
1. Oasis Leaf, which you start out with.
2. Brisk Berry, which you start out with.
3. Belle Tart Seed, which you start out with.
4. Dream Fluff, which you get from solving Puzzle #61.
5. Joy Root Clover, which you get from solving Puzzle #74.
6. Tonic Flower, which you get from solving Puzzle #86.
7. Peppercherry, which you get from solving Puzzle #89.
8. Cinder Horse, which you get from solving Puzzle #109.
The twelve recipes are...
1. Belle Classic, made of Oasis Leaf, Brisk Berry and Belle
Tart Seeds.
2. Oasis Berry, made of Oasis Leaf, Brisk Berry and Brisk
Berry.
3. Sugar Smoke, made of Oasis Leaf, Cinder Horse and Belle
Tart Seeds.
4. Root Remedy, made of Oasis Leaf, Joy Root Clover and
Tonic Flower.
5. Cherry Boost, made of Oasis Leaf, Peppercherry and
Peppercherry.
6. Bitter Fruit, made of Brisk Berry, Tonic Flower and
Belle Tart Seeds.
7. Dream Spice, made of Brisk Berry, Dream Fluff and

Cinder Horse.
12. The Layton Elixir, made of Joy Root Clover,
Peppercherry and Cinder Horse.
And the twenty-five people who need tea, excluding
Stachenscarfen, who you have to serve tea to, are...

Some of the tea drinkers have puzzles for you to solve.
Specifically, Opal, Dawson, and Grinko all have puzzles.
Puzzle #091: Sharing the Wealth
-------------------------------
Summary: Divide the map into four pieces, each with a tree,
a house, water and a field.
Solution: It looks like this, if each letter designates a
different plot:
AABB
ACDB
ACDB
CCDD
Puzzle #065: The Ancient Map
----------------------------
Summary: You can write the numbers 1 through 6 on this map,
so each line has the same sum. Number four is already in
its place. Using this information, figure out where number
1 goes.
Solution: Number 1 is the one in the middle of the
horizontal row.
Puzzle #094: The Mystery Cube
-----------------------------
Summary: There is a diagram, which can be folded into a
cube. Eight such cubes were put together, to form a bigger
cube. You're supposed to figure out what the face on the
top of the cube in the corner is. There are three faces on
this cube which touch the faces of other cubes; when two
faces touch, they are of matching letters.
Solution: B.
008-The Tea Master's House

Video #48:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeITXDpxIhE
When you have served tea to everyone who is thirsty (see
the previous section for more details), you unlock the Tea
Master's House. This is a bonus section with three puzzles.
Puzzle #142: The Scholar's Life
-------------------------------
Summary: After spending 1/6 of his life as a child, our
scholar spent 1/12 of his life as a young man. He was
married 1/7 of his life later, and he had a child five
years later. The child lived to be half as old as the
father, when he died. The scholar died four years after his
son. How old was the scholar?
Solution: 84 years. That's the smallest number which is
divisible by 6, 7 and 12.
Puzzle #143: Letter Calculations
--------------------------------
Summary: AA times AA = BBCC. A, B and C are all different
single-digit numbers. What are they?
Solution: A = 8, B = 7 and C = 4.
Puzzle #144: Super Pancakes
---------------------------
Summary: It's the pancake stacking puzzle again, only this
time, you have seven pancakes.
Solution: This takes 127 steps. Hopefully, these
instructions, which split up the 127 steps into smaller,
more manageable groups, will be of some assistance:
1) Start by making a 3-2-1 pyramid on Plate 3. You do it
like this:
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 2 on Plate 2.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 2. You now have a 2-1 pyramid on
Plate 2.
Put Pancake 3 on Plate 3. Cool. Your 3-2-1 pyramid has just
started. Now you have to shuffle Pancakes 1 and 2 to finish
the pyramid.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 2 on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 2.
Put Pancake 2 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 3. Pyramid done.
2) Now you have to make a 4-3-2-1 pyramid on Plate 2.
Put Pancake 4 on Plate 2. Now you have a 4 pyramid on Plate
2.
Time to put the other 3 Pancakes in place. This is just
like
doing a 3-Pancake pyramid like in step one, only on a
different Plate.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 2.
Put Pancake 2 on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 3 on Plate 2. Now you have a 4-3 pyramid on
Plate 2.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 2 on Plate 2. Now you have a 4-3-2 pyramid on
Plate
2.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 2. Now your pyramid is done.
3) Now you have to make a 5-4-3-2-1 pyramid on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 5 on Plate 3.
Now you have to put the other 4 Pancakes in place. This is
just like making a 4-Pancake pyramid in step two, only on a
different Plate. See how the puzzle is easy to solve once
you get a general idea of what to do? It's just the same
thing over and over.
a) So, in order to make a 4-Pancake pyramid on Plate 3, we
have to make a 3-Pancake pyramid on Plate 1.
b) In order to make a 3-Pancake pyramid on Plate 1, we have
to
make a 2-Pancake pyramid on Plate 3.
So...put Pancake 1 on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 2 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 3. Substep b is done.
Put Pancake 3 on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 2.
Put Pancake 2 on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 1. Substep a is done.
Put Pancake 4 on Plate 3. We have a 5-4 pyramid on Plate 3
and a
3-2-1 pyramid on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 2 on Plate 2.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 2.
Put Pancake 3 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 2 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 3.
4) Now that you've got a 5-4-3-2-1 pyramid on Plate 3, you
get to have to fun of making a 6-5-4-3-2-1 pyramid on Plate
2. That'll let you move Pancake 7 into place. Yay.
To make sure no one gets lost, I'll recap every time you
make a 3-2-1 pyramid, which is every seven moves or so.
Put Pancake 6 on Plate 2.
Move Pancake 1 on Plate 2.
Move Pancake 2 on Plate 1.
Move Pancake 1 on Plate 1.
Move Pancake 3 on Plate 2.
Move Pancake 1 on Plate 3.
Move Pancake 2 on Plate 2.
Move Pancake 1 on Plate 2. You now have a 3-2-1 pyramid on
Plate
2, Pancake 6 on Plate 2, and Pancakes 4 and 5 on Plate 3.
Move Pancake 4 to Plate 1.
Move Pancake 1 to Plate 1.
Move Pancake 2 to Plate 3.
Move Pancake 1 to Plate 3.
Move Pancake 3 to Plate 1.
Move Pancake 1 to Plate 2.
Move Pancake 2 to Plate 1.
Move Pancake 1 to Plate 1. You now have a 4-3-2-1 pyramid
on
Plate 1, Pancake 6 on Plate 2 and Pancake 5 on Plate 3.
Move Pancake 5 on Plate 2. You now have a 6-5 pyramid on
Plate
2, and a 4-3-2-1 pyramid on Plate 1.
Move Pancake 1 to Plate 3.
Move Pancake 2 to Plate 2.
Move Pancake 1 to Plate 2.
Move Pancake 3 to Plate 3.
Move Pancake 1 to Plate 1.
Move Pancake 2 to Plate 3.
Move Pancake 1 to Plate 3. You have a 3-2-1 on Plate 3,
Pancake 4
on Plate 1 and 6-5 on Plate 2.
Move Pancake 4 to Plate 2. You now have a 6-5-4 pyramid on
Plate
2 and a 3-2-1 pyramid on Plate 3. Easy enough to make that
into one big pyramid...
Move Pancake 1 to Plate 2.
Move Pancake 2 to Plate 1.
Move Pancake 1 to Plate 1.
Move Pancake 3 to Plate 2.
Move Pancake 1 to Plate 3.
Move Pancake 2 to Plate 2.
Move Pancake 1 to Plate 2.
5) We're STILL not done? Ugh, this is trying my patience!
Along with my ability to visualize the whole thing in my
head. But we're halfway to the end now, at least. So let me
think here...
You've got a 6-5-4-3-2-1 pyramid on Plate 2, and 7 on Plate
1.
Put Pancake 7 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 2 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 3 on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 2.
Put Pancake 2 on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 1. You've got a 3-2-1 pyramid on
Plate 1,
Pancake 7 on Plate 3, and 6-5-4 on Plate 2. So..
Put Pancake 4 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 2 on Plate 2.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 2.
Put Pancake 3 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 2 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 3. You've got a 7-4-3-2-1 on Plate 3
and
6-5 on Plate 2. You want to move the 3-2-1 on Plate 1, so
you
can start a 4-3-2-1 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 2 on Plate 2.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 2.
Put Pancake 3 on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 2 on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 1. You've got a 3-2-1 pyramid on
Plate 1,
a 6-5 on Plate 2 and Plate 4 on Plate 3. Now you want a 4-
3-2-1
on Plate 3, so...
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 2 on Plate 2.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 2.
Put Pancake 3 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 2 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 3. You've got a 4-3-2-1 on Plate 3,
and a
6-5 on Plate 2.
Move Pancake 5 on Plate 1. Now it's time to get a 5-4-3-2-1
pyramid on Plate 1. First you have to move a 3-2-1 onto
Plate
2, so you can move Pancake 4.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 2.
Put Pancake 2 on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 3 on Plate 2.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 2 on Plate 2.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 2.
Move Pancake 4 on Plate 1. You should have a 5-4 on Plate 1
and
a 3-2-1 on Plate 2.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 2 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 3 on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 2.
Put Pancake 2 on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 1. Now you've got a 5-4-3-2-1 on
Plate 1,
Pancake 6 on Plate 2 and Pancake 7 on Plate 3.
Move Pancake 6 to Plate 3. Yes, yes, yes! We've reached a
second halfway point! Out next mini-goal is a 3-2-1 on
Plate 3.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 2 on Plate 2.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 2.
Put Pancake 3 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 2 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 4 on Plate 2. Now you've got 5 on Plate 1, 4 on
Plate
2 and 3-2-1 on Plate 3. We need to shuffle the 3-2-1 on
Plate
2.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 2.
Put Pancake 2 on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 3 on Plate 2.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 2 on Plate 2.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 2. Now you've got a 4-3-2-1 on Plate
2.
Put Pancake 5 on Plate 3. Ha! Getting there! It's a 7-6-5
on
Plate 3 and a 4-3-2-1 on Plate 2. Let's get a 3-2-1 on
Plate 1.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 2 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 3 on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 2.
Put Pancake 2 on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 4 on Plate 3. ALMOST DONE! You've got 7-6-5-4
on
Plate 3 and 3-2-1 on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 2 on Plate 2.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 2.
Put Pancake 3 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 1.
Put Pancake 2 on Plate 3.
Put Pancake 1 on Plate 3.

Once you beat the game for the first time, you unlock the
Sweethearts' House.
Puzzle #148: Eight Cards
------------------------------
Summary: Put the numbers 1 through 8 into the equation __ X
_ = ____, while having a valid answer.
Solution: 582 X 3 = 1746
Puzzle #149: Number Cycle
-------------------------
Summary: The numbers here go in a cycle. What number goes
in the blank spot?
Solution: The pattern involves squaring the digits of a
number. For instance...
4 squared is 16. 16 is made up of 1 and 6. 1 squared, plus
6 squared gives you 37, the next number in the sequence. 37
is made up of 3 and 7. 3 squared plus 7 squared is 58, the
next number in the sequence.
58 is made up of 5 and 8. 5 squared plus 8 squared is 89.
Therefore, 89 is the answer you're looking for.
Puzzle #150: The Knight's Tour 4
--------------------------------
Summary: Do the Knight's Tour, on an eight by eight board.

left, down/right, left, down, left, up, left, up, right,
up, right, down, down, left, down/right, left, left, and
left. You are in the bottom/left corner.
Move up, left, up, up, right, up, down, down/right, left,
up, right, left, up, and left. The top two rows are now
filled. Move right, down, left, right, down, left, right,
left, up, right, left and up.

Puzzle #151: Colin's Score
--------------------------
Summary: Four students took a test. Each question had the
answer A or B. Given the results of the three students
below, can you figure out what score Colin should have?
Solution: 60.
Puzzle #152: The Card Tournament
--------------------------------
Summary: A number of people are playing cards, and each
person plays every other person once. However, Wallace left
after a few hands. 59 hands were played in all. How many
hands did Wallace play?
Solution: When you have a situation like this, if X is the
number of people in the room, X(X-1), divided by 2, is the
number of hands that get played. If there are eleven
people, 55 hands get played. If there are 12 people, 66
hands get played.
Therefore, there are 12 people. Wallace missed out on 66–59
= 7 rounds. Wallace had 11 opponents all together, and if
he missed out on 7, he must have played only four hands.

the first Professor Layton game. Both games have a bonus
section, with a top secret section inside. Inside the top
secret section, you find a section called "The Hidden
Door".
The Hidden Door in The Diabolical Box contains a password.
