1..... Introduction
==============================================================================
Welcome to my Berry Guide for Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. This guide shows the
entire list of berries, plus a small little bit on poffins. This guide will
show you the berry's description and what it does. There are
a total of 64 berries in the Sinnoh region, and all can be obtained in some
way. Anyways, on to the guide!
==============================================================================
2..... Berries? What do they do? How do I get them?
==============================================================================
Berries are items that pokemon can use. All berries can be held and some have
an effect in battle. An oran berry, for example, will heal 10HP in battle when
the pokemon's health enters the yellow zone. A Cheri berry will cure paralysis,
in or outside of battle. Some berries have special effects. A Pomeg berry
will decease your pokemons HP EV's (effort values) and a Occa berry will
decrease fire attack damage. Some berries are only used for poffin
ingredients. Berries are only a 1 time use, unless the move Recycle is
used (Thanks to Colonel450 for this info) or you are in the Battle
tower, so be careful!
Berries are avaliable ingame when you reach Floaroma town. Berries are found
in dark patches of soil. You can pick them, and if you water the berry lots,
you can get tons of berries! Some people, like the berry master on route
208, will give you berries every day!
New to this generation is fertilizer. Putting fertilizer on the soil before
planting your berries will enhance growth. Here are the different types of
mulch and their effects:
Growth mulch: Makes berries grow in half the time, but soil will dry up
faster.
Damp Mulch: Berries grow 2x slower than normal, but soil stays damp for
twice as long after watering.
Stable Mulch: Extends time ripened Berries remain on their plants before
falling off.
Gooey Mulch: Increases chance of new plants growing when their berries
fall off the plant.
Use your Sprayduck to water berries. The more you water them, the better
chance you get to have more berries! If you want a large amount of berries,
water the plants every hour (1/2 hour if using Growth mulch). Keep watering
the soil until the dirt is damp. The sprayduck is located in Floaroma town.
The store in Floaroma town will trade accesories for your pokes for a
certain amount of a certain berry. Personally, I have never done this myself,
as accessories are the most useless addition in Pokemon D/P. (I remember
the time I was searching for a Pamtre berry in Amity Square and all I would
find were accessories.)
A berry finder app. for your poketch will help you find where you planted your
berries! To get it, go to the berry masters house on route 208 and talk to the
little girl in there. Answer yes to her question to get the berry finder
app.!
Berries take some time to grow however. Berries start out as seeds, then
sprouts, then blooming then ready. Different berries take longer to grow.
Some only take 4 hours, others take 96 hours before they are ready.
Happy planting!
==============================================================================
3.....Berries: Training and Battle
==============================================================================
Of course, some berries can be used in-battle on your Pokemon, some outside
of battle for healing and EV's.
Now, making a Pokemon hold a berry is simple. Select your berry from the bag,
and give it to your Pokemon. Simple enough right? Make sure that the berry
your Pokemon is holding does some sort of effect in battle. Poffin berries do
jack squat.
Berries 21-26 reduce EV's. EV's stand for Effort Values, and different
Pokemon when defeated give different EV's, like 1 Sp. Def EV or
3 Sp. Attack EV's. Pokemon can have a total of 255 EV's in one stat, and
a maximum of 510 EV's overall.
Now, I'll try not to get too in-depth, but, sometimes, you may want to
restart your EV training for some reason, whether is it because you made
a mistake or whatever. Now listen up: Certain berries drop certain stats.
Refer to the Berry list below for more info...
Now, for an Example. My Lucario has 252EV's in Sp. Atk. I want to get rid
of some of those EV's so I can put some in Atk. so I can make a Mixed
Sweeper Lucario. Outside of battle, I need to use the Hondew Berry. Feeding
the Hondew berry to my Lucario will drop his Sp. Atk EV's to 100. Simple
enough.
If your EV in a stat is over 100, then the EV reducing berry will reduce it to
100 EV's exact. If it is lower than 100 EV's, then it will go down by 10 each
time till it hits zero.
If you are planning to build a competitive team, grow lots of these kinds of
berries, since you will be changing stuff quite often.
As for In-Battle: I can't say much. Berries like the Salac berry will raise a
stat greatly if you hit red health, which may give you the upper hand.
Sitrus and Oran Berries restore HP, while Pecha and Aspear cure
certain status effects. These berries activate is you are at half-health
or lower. That's all I can say about that.
==============================================================================
4..... How do I make Poffins?
==============================================================================
Poffins can be fed to pokemon to enhance their stats in a contest. Once you
get to Hearthome city and get a poffin case, you can make up to 100 poffins.
Go to the poffin house (just south of the PKMN center) and ask the lady
by the fondueish thing to make poffins. You can do it alone or with friends,
and supposedly if you make it with other people your poffins will turn out
better.
While making Poffins, you will need to stir the batter either clockwise or
counter-clockwise (an arrow will show which way to stir) going to fast will
make the batter overflow, and going to slow will burn it. The batter gets
thicker and harder to stir after a while, so be prepared! Once you have
stirred it enough, you will be done, and your results will be posted. The
faster you made it and the less you overflowed and burnt it, the better your
poffin will be!
Depending on the berrys flavor, you may get different kinds of poffins.
A rawst berry will result in a bitter poffin.
Sometimes you might get a mix of flavors, like a Pamtre berry will net
you a dry-sweet poffin. If you overflowed it or burnt the poffin too much,
the result will be a foul poffin, which won't do much except make your
Pokemon hate you.
You may notice a little bar below the pokemon's contest stats. It is called
sheen. You can only feed your pokemon so many poffins. Once the sheen
bar is full, your pokemon cannot be fed anymore poffins. There is no
way to decrease a sheen w/o using a hacking device. If you fed your
pokemon the wrong poffin, you will need to catch a new one and start all
over.
PLATINUM ONLY: You can buy poffins in the basement of the Veilstone Dept.
Store for 6,400. Convienient if you can't make Poffins yourself.
The higher the level and the lower the smoothness, the better the poffin.
Remember this.

6..... FAQ
==============================================================================
Here are some widely asked questions about watering berries that I have gotten
tons of e-mails about. This should clear up some confusion:
Q: On routes where it rains (Route 212 for example) I plant berries, but
when I come back to check on them, they appear like they haven't been
watered. What gives?
A: Now, I'm not totally sure what causes this, however, no matter which
route you plant it on, raining or not, you still need to water it manually
yourself. The rain is just there as background and for effect in battles.
Nothing more.
Q: I can't grow more than (x) amount of berries. Why?
A: It depends on how much you water them. See, some berries, like the Razz
berry, can grow a large amount (I've gotten 14 or so once). Some other
berries will only grow 4 berries at a time. For best results and more berries,
water every hour (half hour if using growth mulch, every 2 hours if using
damp mulch).
Q: I can't put mulch with my berries.
A: I believe you need to plant the mulch before you plant the berry. You
cannot plant mulch after you have planted your berry or while it is growing.
Doesn't work.
Ok, those are out of the way. Don't e-mail these questions to me again, kk?
---
Q: Berries?
A: They have been around since the 2nd gen (Silver, Gold, Crystal). They
help enhance your pokemon during battles. Some berrys restore HP or
boost stats in a pinch.
Q: Poffins? How do I make them? Where can I make them?
A: Poffins are the new PokeBlocks. You stir the berry batter with the touch
screen. The faster you stir, the better your poffin will be. You can make
poffins once you reach Hearthome city.
Also, only in Pokemon Platinum, you can buy them from the basement floor
in the Veilstone Dept. They cost 6,400 each, all raise two contest stats,
and all have a smoothness of 20. I find it most convenient to buy from
there.
Q: How do I make a Pokemon hold a berry?
A: Go to items and go to the berry pocket. Choose a berry, and select "give".
Choose a pokemon to hold the berry. Done. Juts make sure the berry has an
effect as poffin berries do nothing in battle ; )
Q: Berries are useless. They suck.
A: Many competitive battlers will probably disagree with you.
Q: Can you give me a berry?
A: Go away.
Q: How do I get (Berry)?
A: Berries can be found all over Sinnoh. You can also import them from your
GBA games. As far as I know, only berries 63 and 64 cannot be obtained at
this time, and will most likely be given away at future Nintendo Events.
Q: What is your favorite berry?
A: I, personally, like the Salac berry. It raises speed and it has a cool
name =)
Q: Where can I find Mulch?
A: The berry masters wife on Route 208 (Inside the house) will sell all 4
kinds of mulch to you for $200 each.
Q: Where are the best spots to plant berries?
A: The Best spots are usually nearby towns and cities. I usually plant fine
in the Solaceon Berry patch or by the Berry Masters house. Another good place
is your Villa, which you only can get in Pokemon Platinum...
Q: How do I get Mild/Rich Poffins?
A: You can get your first Mild Poffin in Hearthome from one of the NPC's
inside the contest buliding. If you want to make more, get some friends
together via wireless or Wifi and add some REALLY good berries of
different kinds. If you do well you will probably get a Mild or
Rich Poffin.
If you have a question, you can e-mail me at the following address:
[email protected]
Do not send me e-mails asking to rate teams, help with defeating the E4 etc.
Questions about berries and poffins, maybe contests are fine. Anything
else including spam will be deleted.
