1. INTRODUCTION
*******************************************************************************
Hey guys, welcome to my FAQ for Pokemon HeartGold & SoulSilver's Pokewalker.
The Pokewalker is a stepometer which comes included with the purchase of the
main game. The Pokewalker is not needed to play the game but it comes in
extremely handy. It connects wirelessly via infrared from the walker to the
game cartridge. This means that any of the DS's (old, lite or DSi) can connect
to the walker. I would highly suggest all players to make use of the walker.
This FAQ will outline the entirety of the Pokewalker.
*******************************************************************************
2. UNIT FAQ
*******************************************************************************
Q: What is the Pokewalker?
A: The Pokewalker is a stepometer with a mini-game twist to it. You can store
one of your Pokemon on the walker which will gain experience for every step
you take. You can also catch more pokemon and find rare items.
Q: Does it cost extra?
A: Nope, it comes with your game purchase for free. It also comes with a clip
that you can use to clip on a pant pocket or belt buckle.
Q: How does it work?
A: The walker connects wirelessly via infrared which is in both the walker and
the game cartridge. That means it'll work with any of the DS's. And for you
illegal ROMers, you lost out.
*******************************************************************************

4. WALKING
*******************************************************************************
The main point of the Pokewalker; walking. The walker stores every step that
you take while walking. Even without a Pokemon in the walker it will still
store steps. So, turn it on, walk around, get stuff!
===========
4A. Steps =
===========
Walk. Yep, go walk. Every step you take will count as one step to the walker.
That is if it registers. If you find you can't get the steps to register then
visit the Help & Problems section.
The best part about walking is that you can level up your Pokemon just by
walking. Every step you take is also 1 experience point for the pokemon in the
walker. This means you can level up your Pokemon just by walking! There are
some downfalls however; you can only level up one time per trip. That means
even if you walk a million steps, you'll only level up once. It only takes one
minute or so to transfer back to the DS and back to the walker though.
Also, you won't gain any new moves to any pokemon who levels up, or evolve. So
for instance, my Totodile learns Water Gun at level 6. If I use the Pokewalker
to level him up to level 6, he will not learn Water Gun. This means you'll
probably want to look online for movesets to see when a pokemon learns a move
so you don't level them up on accident to not learn them. Likewise, if I level
my Totodile to level 18 in my Pokewalker he will not evolve to Croconaw. I
would have to wait until he's level 19.
And lastly, since you are not battling pokemon in game, you will not earn any
EVs for leveling. So, you could technically level a pokemon from 2 to 100 using
the Pokewalker, but it would be in its 1st form, have only its original moves
and will have near-base stats for level 100.
===========
4B. Watts =
===========
For every 20 steps that the game registers you will receive 1 watt. Watts are
the currency that the Pokewalker uses. They're used for unlocking new areas,
catching pokemon and obtaining items.
====================
4C. Cost of a Watt =
====================
Watts cost 20 steps. You do not have to buy watts, they just appear for you.
Here's the chart on how they're used:
1 Watt = 20 Steps
Obtain Item = 3 Watts (60 Steps)
Catch a Pokemon = 10 Watts (200 Steps)
Unlock a New Area = ? Watts
Note that you will not receive an item or a pokemon every time you spend the
watts to try. If you fail to obtain the item or pokemon, you won't get the
watts back.
*******************************************************************************
5. OBTAINING POKEMON
*******************************************************************************
One of the best things about the Pokewalker; the ability to catch Pokemon!
===================
5A. What you need =
===================
To attempt to catch a Pokemon, you will need 10 Watts (200 steps) and a Pokemon
in the Pokewalker. Go into the menu and select POKE RADAR.
=========================
5B. Finding the Pokemon =
=========================
Once you have clicked on the POKE RADAR you will lose 10 Watts and be brought
to a screen with four grass piles. Your goal is to click on the grass pile that
has the "!" sign above it. Correctly picking the right pile will either engage
in battle, or will continue on to a higher group of pokemon. Missing the "!"
either by clicking on the wrong pile or taking too long will cause the pokemon
to run away, thus wasting your 10 Watts.
There are three "groups" of Pokemon that you can catch per route. They are
Group A, B and C. As more steps are taken on each route you will unlock the
next group, starting from C to B to A. The amount of steps to unlock each group
changes with each route.
At first, only one "!" will appear above a grass pile. It'll look like this:
___
| ! |
|___|
If engaged in battle after clicking, you will be given one of the two possible
Pokemon in Group C. If you are given the next set of "!" then you will advance.
Here's the list of how it works:
___
| ! | 1st: Group C
|___|
___
| ! | 2nd: Group C or Group B
|___|
___
|! !| 3rd: Group B or Group A
|___|
___
|!!!| 4th: Group A
|___|
This means that after you click the first "!", you will either engage in battle
or move onto the 2nd. So, if you need a Group A Pokemon, you'll have to either
engage in battle on the 3rd or 4th "!". If you need a Group C Pokemon, you'll
have to either engage in battle on the 1st or 2nd "!". You will never go
farther than the 4th "!". As it is harder to get to the 4th "!" than the 1st,
Group A pokemon are "rarer" than Group C pokemon.
=====================
5C. How Groups Work =
=====================
As stated above, you have 3 groups of Pokemon; A, B and C. Each group has two
Pokemon in them per route. This means that A has 2, B has 2, and C has 2 for a
total of 6 Pokemon per route. You will need to take a certain amount of steps
to unlock the higher groups per route.
When you start a walk with a Pokemon, one Pokemon from each group is chosen to
be the Pokemon you can battle. It will stay like this for the entire walk which
means if you're aiming for a certain Pokemon in a group and you're getting the
other, you'll never get the Pokemon you want until you go back to the DS and
start a new walk. For example;
Ficticious Route (I wish this were a real route)
Group A: Squirtle & Totodile
Group B: Bulbasaur & Chikorita
Group C: Charmander & Cyndaquil
When you start the walk, one of each will be picked. It could be Squirtle,
Chikorita and Charmander. That means if I'm looking for a Bulbasaur, I'll never
find one until I go back and start a new walk.
Some Pokemon are considered "rare" to the game. For instance, for the "Rugged
Road" route, Group A contains either Onix or Magby. Magby is considered "rare"
to the walker so you will mostly get Onix in Group A. I had to take around 15
walks before I finally got the Magby group.
==============
5D. Battling =
==============
So you've engaged in battle and the opponent and your Pokemon has appeared.
You will notice four "-" marks above your Pokemon and below theirs. This is
your HP and theirs. If you reach 0 or they reach 0, the battle will end.
An email from Fawie42 states that if you lose a Battle, you lose an additional
10 Watts, meaning you lose a total of 20 Watts. I've tried losing a battle and
can't seem to do it so this is unconfirmed.
You have three options:
+Attack
+Evade
+Catch
A successful attack will take off one HP (except criticals). Evade will dodge
an opponent's attack. Catch will release a Pokeball (free to you) and will
attempt to catch the Pokemon. Your opponent will also have the same options
except "Catch" for them will be "Run". Here's a list of all of the available
options:
YOU THEM RESULT
Attack|Attack = Each lose 1 HP
Attack|Evade = You lose 1 HP, they Dodge
Attack|Run = Critical Hit. They lose 2HP. You stay the same.
------|------
Evade |Attack = You dodge, they lose 1 HP
Evade |Evade = Stare down. Nothing happens.
Evade |Run = Battle ends.
------|-----
Catch |Attack = Attempts to catch
Catch |Evade = Attempts to catch
Catch |Run = Attempts to catch
In an earlier FAQ I stated that sometimes I'm booted right back to the main
screen when evading in battle. Upon further review and some emails, it seems
that mashing the Evade button during a pokemon battle will instantly let you
run from the battle. YOu won't receive your Watts back, though. This is useful
when you're searching for a specific pokemon and you don't get it.
==============
5E. Catching =
==============
Catching is a lot less complicated than it is in the actual Pokemon game. All
it depends on is the amount of HP your opponent has. I haven't noticed any
difference between catch rates of Group A Pokemon and Group C Pokemon. These
are all based off of my own experiences, not off of any hacked Pokewalkers or
anything, so if anyone has any other information please email me.
This section has been changed due to a lot of emails telling me that you can
catch Pokemon with 4 bars, and that you can lose Pokemon at 1 bar. Quoted from
Doug (dcoughler);
"Just a correction on your guide - it *is* possible to catch a pokemon with
full bars. I know because I was trying to catch a Group A pokemon, and a
HootHoot kept popping up (which I already had from the main game). To get rid
of it, I just tossed a pokeball at it, thinking I would never catch it. I
managed to catch at least one (I remember cursing when I did, then worrying
about waking my 4 month old)."
Other emails have confirmed this. Another email I have received gave extra info
about catch rates. Their info found the catch rates to be;
4 Bars: 30%
3 Bars: 50%
2 Bars: 70%
1 Bar: 90%
Upon further review I find that these seem more correct than the ones I have
earlier stated. The 30% may be a little high for 4 bars, as I've received
plenty of emails stating the percentage to be around 10%, as well as my own
testing to be around 10%. So, these are the best estimates of the catch rate:
4 Bars: 10~30%
3 Bars: 50%
2 Bars: 70~75%
1 Bar: 90~95%
As of right now, if you have any further information based off of a hacked
Pokewalker or extreme testing, send in an email. I've received dozens of emails
just saying "Oh, I caught one at 4 bars" and "I missed one at 1 bar". Thanks
for the emails, it helped, but now I just need extreme testing.
=================
5F. Battle Tips =
=================
At the beginning of a battle you should always attack. Attacking is the only
way to ensure the Pokemon won't run away. In most of my battles where I catch
a Pokemon I never evade.
Evade only when you're at 1HP bar and the opponent is at 2 or higher. Evading
will ensure you don't lose any HP while still having a chance to hurt the
other Pokemon.
Catch at 1 HP left for the opposing Pokemon. There's no point to catch at 3 or
4 bars. The only reason you would want to catch at 2 is if you're at 1 HP bar
or if you're afraid of critical hitting the opponent.
========================
5G. Find While Walking =
========================
After the first release of the guide I received plenty of emails (and I mean
plenty) stating that you could find Pokemon simply by walking around with no
Pokemon in the Pokewalker. After further investigation, you can find Pokemon
just by walking around.
To do this, you must have no Pokemon in the Pokewalker. That means no Pokemon
at all. While walking around a Pokemon may just suddenly appear to walk along
with you. That Pokemon is now yours to keep! I've noticed that the pokemon is
always one of the Group C pokemon of the walk, though it's happened only three
times to myself, so you may be able to get Pokemon from higher groups.
There is still a small discrepancy with how it works though. The first time it
happened to me, I just turned on the Pokewalker to see a Machop walking along
with me. However, the second and third time it happened, I opened up the walker
to a "!" above the area. When I clicked the middle button, I received a message
saying that a Machop had joined my walk. This leads me to believe that the
first time it had happened my pocket had pressed the button, not me. Though it
may be possible to just obtain the Pokemon without even knowing about it.
As of right now, I'll leave it at that it can happen either way.
*******************************************************************************
6. OBTAINING ITEMS
*******************************************************************************
Unlike obtaining Pokemon, there are actually two ways of obtaining items
through the Pokewalker. One by just finding them, or one by using the Dowsing
rods.
==================
6A. Dowsing Rods =
==================
For this you will need 3 Watts (60 steps). Once you click the DOWSING option in
the menu the minigame will begin.
You will see six grass piles (the same as when fighting Pokemon only smaller)
with an arrow pointing down at the first. You are also given two chances to
find the item. There is only one item to find per minigame.
You will first pick a pile. You will either find the item (good job) or you
won't.
If you do not find the item, you will be given two different results:
"It's Near!": This means the item is under one of the adjacent piles.
"Seems Far Away...": This means it is NOT under one of the adjacent piles.
If you find it on the 2nd try, good job. If you do not, the game ends and you
lose the 3 Watts for nothing.
An email from Exawatt gave a big equation as to what the chances are of finding
an item based on what grass pile you pick. I stated in an earlier version that
picking an inside grass pile will result in a better chance of getting the
item that picking an outside grass pile. The equation shows that this is not
true; it doesn't matter which grass pile is your original pick, you will
always have the same percentage of finding the item on the second pick. Thanks
Exawatt!
====================
6B. Walking Around =
====================
You can obtain an item just by walking around! However, you do not instantly
get it. For this you will need a Pokemon in the Pokewalker. No Watts needed!
While you're walking around (actually walking) sometimes a "!" or a music note
will appear above the route you're taking. This mostly happens while the screen
is off, meaning you'll probably turn on the Pokewalker and see it. There has
been more research since the last update to include more information on
the emotes in the next section entitled "Emotes".
When this happens, simply press a button (doesn't matter which one) and you'll
obtain the item with some text. It'll normally say something like:
"(POKEMON) is (HUMMING/SINGING/VERY ENERGETIC)!"
"(POKEMON) found something!"
"(ITEM) obtained!"
============
6C. Emotes =
============
As stated above, every once in a while an emote ("!" for example) will appear
in a chat bubble above the area you are taking a walk in. Thanks to a helpful
email and self-testing, the emotes seem to play a bigger role than previously
thought. Quoting from the email;
"If the face looks like a right side up :| , then the Pokemon will have a
generic message (something like running around or is bored). If the face is
smiling, then the Pokemon will either give you another generic message or else
10 Watts. If the icon is a song note, then there will either be a message or
you will get 20 watts. If it is a heart, 50 watts (have yet to get a message).
If it is a box, then an item (have yet to get a message)"
With other emails this seems to be correct. So, here's a list of all the emotes
and their outcomes:
:| - Generic Message
:) - Generic Message and sometimes 10 Watts
! - Generic Message and 20 Watts
Song Note - Generic Message and sometimes 20 Watts
Heart - 50 Watts
Box (Item Box) - Item
The output of what you get may also be based on the happiness of the Pokemon in
the walker. Happier pokemon would receive better items or more watts. This is
unconfirmed.
====================
6D. How Items Work =
====================
Each route has a set ten items you can obtain. Each item has a certain step
requirement for the route (except for the first item). In an email I was
corrected on this information.
Exawatt states that the amount of steps needed to unlock an item are counted on
the amount of steps you've walked THAT DAY and not the amount of steps you've
walked on a route. For instance, if you need 5000 steps to unlock an item on
Rugged Road, if you get the 5000 steps, you will also unlock the 5000 step item
on Beautiful Beach. This means the total amount of steps you would need to
unlock everything on every route is 8000 steps. Thanks Exawatt!
*******************************************************************************
7. CONNECTION TIPS
*******************************************************************************
In order to even use the Pokewalker you will need to advance your DS game to
where you can catch Pokemon. You will need to catch a Pokemon and put it in
Bill's PC (Somebody's PC). The Pokewalker uses Pokemon in the PC, not in your
party. Once you have a Pokemon in the PC, you can use the Pokewalker!
To use the Pokewalker you will have to restart the DS. Go into the Pokemon game
but before choosing your saved game, go to the 3rd menu option. This is where
you can start a trip. Just choose your Pokemon, the route, and hit connect on
the Pokewalker and your DS.
You must face the Pokewalker directly to the Pokemon Game Cartridge. Its best
to get them about an inch away from each other. Don't worry if the connection
isn't made or is interrupted, it happens quite a lot.
*******************************************************************************
8. HELP & PROBLEMS (Q&A)
*******************************************************************************
Q: What happens if my battery dies on my Pokewalker?
A: You will lose all steps and watts you had from the current trip but your
Pokemon will be safe. You will need to replace the battery, which is a
standard CR 2032 3V watch battery.
Q: I lost/broke my Pokewalker! How do I get my Pokemon back?
A: At the Pokewalker connection screen, press and hold Up, Select and R
Q: Can I reset a Pokewalker?
A: Yes. At the Pokewalker connection screen, press and hold Down, X and L
Q: My steps are not being recognized. Is it broken?
A: Possibly. First off, are you shaking it to get steps? Shaking too fast will
not register the steps. If you're legitely walking and nothing is happening,
try pinning it to your pocket rather than just in your pocket. If you're
wearing shorts, pin it to the bottom of your shorts. The pin is strong enough
to work upside-down. If still nothing, try calling Nintendo.
Q: Give me ways to get steps without walking. NAO!
A: First, get off your butt and go walk somewhere. To school or work. If you're
looking for ways to cheat the system try attaching it to your sock and tap
your foot while you're sitting down. Perhaps I'll add a section for cheating
the system later. But it's seriously not that hard to get steps. Walking from
my room to the kitchen and back to my room is about 75 steps to the walker
when in all actuality it's about 30, if that.
*******************************************************************************
9. ROUTE INFORMATION
*******************************************************************************
Alrighty, this is the list of all the routes, the amount of steps to get them,
basically the whole shebang. Note that Special Types are Pokemon Types that
receive a 25% discount to the amount of steps needed to unlock certain Pokemon
or items.
In order to unlock the Hoenn routes you need the National Pokedex in game to
unlock the other routes. This means you have to beat part of the game to
unlock the rest of the routes
Also note, the amount of watts needed to unlock a new area count only NON-USED
Watts. So, any Watts used to catch pokemon or get items are not counted.

10. POKEWALKER2POKEWALKER
*******************************************************************************
Another feature of the Pokewalker is that you can connect to another Pokewalker
in order to obtain gifts from each other. I have not done this (as I know no
one who has the game) myself, but an email from an unnamed citizen has some
information on what you can do with it. So, everything from this point on in
this section is just quoted straight from the email;
When you and another person have a Pokewalker, if they choose connect at the
same time, their pokemon have an "encounter" and both Walkers are given an
item. A few things to note:
- One item per trainer. basically you cant keep getting items from the same
trainer, but its only once per day. though im not sure about this, i havent
tested this yet, but i think it may be one item given to a trainer per walk,
though most likely its per day.
- The items seem set depending on the trainer. I found that on different walks
i was given a set item. Ex. On one day i was connecting with other Pokewalkers
and i kept recieving TM29. Other times i got something lame i think TM11. While
my friends they kept getting different items from me: Red shard, Guard Spec,
Moon Stone (so far)
-The items you get from connecting to other Pokewalkers dont seem to apply to
the 3 gifts you get on walks, but theyre still there if you check your Pokemon
and Item option for the Pokewalker.
