-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PART 1 - INTRODUCTION
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lunar: Dragon Song implements the use of battle cards. The game is neither
centered nor dependent on their use. These cards, when used in battle or on
the field, function in large part like magic spells - for example, boosting
the stats of allies, lowering the stats of enemies, restoring HP, and fleeing
from battle.
When a monster is defeated in Combat Mode (please see the manual for details),
there is a chance that it will drop a card if you do not already have that
type. You can have only one of each type of card at a time, but each card can
be used multiple times (ranging from 8 to 20).
There are 34 different monster types, and thus 34 different usable cards.
During battle, you can check a monster's name by pressing X at any time during
the command selection menu, and you can browse cards at your leisure in the
Cards section of the Items part of the field menu.
Lunar: Dragon Song also uses these cards in a multiplayer game that requires
two DSes and two copies of the game. For the purposes of the Coliseum card
game, each card has elemental attributes and weaknesses, which are named in
Part 3 of this guide. Special cards, featuring bosses and playable characters,
are also available, but they are "collection-only" cards; they can be used
only in the Coliseum minigame and not in Lunar: Dragon Song itself. This FAQ
covers ONLY the usable cards dropped by ordinary monsters and mentions their
elemental attributes and weaknesses purely as a matter of interest. It does
NOT cover the Coliseum card game or the collection-only cards.
Part 2 is a compiled list of the top ten cards to have and use.
Part 3 of this guide lists all usable cards alphabetically, listing where the
monster can be found, what the card does, how many times it can be used before
disappearing, and notes to clarify the in-game description when needed. This
section is ideal if you want to browse the collection, see all information
about a certain card at once, or want to know where you should battle to
replenish your supply of a specific card. It makes the most sense to battle
for a card in the easiest possible location, since the party will take less
damage and because Combat Mode does not give experience anyway.
Part 4 of the guide lists all the cards again, this time sorting them by their
function. This section is helpful if you know WHAT you want to do (for example,
restore MP or lower an enemy's speed) but don't know which card you need to
get. It also gives an at-a-glance overview of ALL card functions in a small
amount of space.
Part 5 of the guide lists the game's dungeons and fighting areas in the order
they appear in the plot and names all the monsters that can be found there.
This portion functions as a mini-bestiary and can direct you to the best
places to go if you're in search of multiple cards in the same area.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PART 2 - RECOMMENDED CARDS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Obviously, you don't need every card in the game; you could conceivably beat
the game without using any cards at all. But if you're planning to use cards
and just want to know what the BEST ones are... well, here's an unranked list
of the Ten Cards You Must Have (and two honorable mentions):
- Vitra: This card restores your entire party's HP. If I were recommending only
one card, this would be it.
- Hellbird: This card restores your entire party's MP. Cards are the only
reliable portable method of MP restoration, since Mental Gum and Mental Drops
are rare and Althena Statues are in fixed locations (and don't appear at all
in most dungeons or the entirety of the Frontier Continent). If I were
recommending only two cards, this would be the other, since MP can be
converted into HP through spells, and generally enable you to survive better.
- Mad Fang: This card draws enemies toward you. This is great on those maps
when an enemy is hovering over the water and you can't get to it, causing
the timer to run out in Virtue Mode, and allowing another monster to respawn.
Use Mad Fang to reel 'em in.
- Gloomwing: This card restores 30 MP to your party, one MP at a time, while
you're on the map. This is nice if you're only that many MP short of full and
don't want to waste a Hellbird card. You can get a lot of use out of just 30
MP, especially with the Magic Booster accessory equipped.
- Shreeker: This card inflicts Poison on the enemy. It can hit more than one
enemy at a time, and all bosses, including the final boss, are vulnerable to
it. 5% of total HP per turn may not sound like much, but say you use this
card at the beginning of a boss fight and spend two turns using stat-
adjustment spells and cards - the boss will be 10% of the way to dead before
you even start attacking. Great for bosses at any point in the game.
- Ice Mongrel: This card is a guaranteed escape from non-boss battles. If you
need out of a fight NOW and can't afford to rely on the uncertainty of
blowing into the mic, that's what Ice Mongrels are for.
- Ochu: This card raises the party's defense. I don't think I need to explain
why this is a good thing. Use against bosses.
- Insector: This card raises the party's attack. Use it in the early rounds of
boss fights, and know that the effect stacks when used multiple times in one
battle.
- Bealzebub: This card raises the party's accuracy to 100%. When you need to
hit, you NEED to hit. It doesn't overcome the accuracy penalty from
Blindness, but it's still pretty nice.
- Shaitan: This card will revive any fallen party members and restore them to
full HP. However, they only appear in the Dragon Caves, so until that point,
you'll have to rely on Lucia's Miracle Tears spell and the Angel's Tears
item. Once you can get them, though, hey, better than Angel's Tears since
they're cheaper and can revive two people at once if you have to. Also,
realize that fallen party members are revived after battle, so you only
want to use this card if you need someone alive during a fight and can't
afford to wait until it's over.
Honorable Mention
- Treant: This card restores HP in exactly the same manner that Gloomwing
restores MP. Again, it's good for about 30 HP, which means it's good in the
early part of the game, but once you're about a third of the way through,
it's pretty useless.
- Duager: This card lowers all enemy stats, but apparently not by a
whole lot. It's not as impressive as it sounds, but a few uses of it
against a boss could give you the edge you need.

I collected all of this information on my own, in the game itself, during two
playthroughs, with several gaps filled in by my good friend Aaron 'falcon815'
Bolner. That said, I'd like to extend special thanks to...
- All the people and companies responsible for creating and producing the
Lunar universe.
- The guys on FFT General, for their overall kindness and constant pimping of
my FFT guides.
- And, as always, thanks to Aaron, who helped me fill in several information
gaps, who bought me the Nintendo DS I played this game on, who recommended
the Lunar games to me in the first place, and without whom I would never
have played RPGs at all. I love you, Aaron. Thanks for everything.
