Introduction
==============================================================================
This is a Monster List. All monsters are listed and include their stats and
basic information. I have also detailed some random hints and tips concerning
monsters, but I don't give any personal choices or favourites. You can
compare monsters for yourself. I have compiled the full monster list based on
my own game and assorted stats received from other sources.
News: Minor edits. Working on the in-game descriptions for each monster (I'm
very lazy, so it may take a while to update all the monsters with their
descriptions.)

1.0 FAQ
==============================================================================
A mini monster-related FAQ:
Q. What does UP mean?
A. UP stands for Unit Points. Each monster has a set amount of UP.
Q. How many UP can Issac get?
A. 11.
Q. What's the strongest monster?
A. In terms of Attack, the Flare Dragon, with an Attack Power of 330.
Q. What's the fastest monster?
A. In terms of Movement Speed, The Scout Orkus, with a Speed of 38.
Q. What's the best meat tank?
A. The Dagon has the highest HP, 3240, but has the lowest Physical Defense
and Magic Defense.
Q. Then what's has the highest Defense?
A. The Brown Shog has 207 Physical Defense but only 200 HP. The Stone Golem
has the highest Magical Defense, of 96.
Q. What's the best monster?
A. Who knows, but a lot of people like using the Hounds though, nice and
balanced. But you should discover your own strategies and choose monsters
that suit your style best.
Q. What's Monster Rushing?
A. Monster Rushing is basically sending all your monsters directly for an
enemy mage/sage to kill them, thus ending most games. Popular with online
play, but most players who aren't prepared or experienced consider this a
cheap tactic.
Q. Where can I find <monster name>?
A. Play the game, that's all the advice I can really give. Stronger monsters
will come in the end game (eg. monsters' whose names start with 'Rune'-).
The entire map (once you get all of the locations) will be separated into
elemental areas; each area is matched up with their respective sage (the ones
you battle to gain their runes).
Q. Where can I find the Dragons?
A. They only come near the end of the game, and on the Good Path. There's a
more detailed FAQ on GameFAQs about the Dragons, written by Hades_Warrior.
Q. I missed my chance to capture <monster name>.
A. If you complete the game, you can begin a New Game+, which is basically
a replay of the game, but where you begin with all your runes, levels, and
monsters. Some Tutorial Missions will change in the New Game+, and you'll
also be able to capture the Knight Orkus (they say he only comes out in the
New Game+, but I can't remember my first game anymore so I can only
speculate) right from the start. Therefore, you'll be able to capture all the
monsters you missed in your first playthough, all at higher levels too.
Q. Can you find a <monster name> with more <specific stat> at level 50?
A. No, at any given level, the stats will be the same for all monsters of the
same species. For example, at level 10, two different teams of Flare Hounds
will have exactly the same stats, and at level 50, they will be the same too.
It also doesn't matter if you leveled it up from level 1, or caught it at
level 50, the stats will be the same for both monsters.
Q. Do monsters stay alive if they get killed?
A. Yes, they come back for your next mission/battle at full power.
Q. What's the deal with the Boxdog/Dogbox?
A. The Boxdog is white and the Dogbox is blue. However, the Dogbox has 14
more Defense points at level 50.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Name Purify? Element Move UP # HP Atk Mag Spd Def M.Def
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Boxdog Y Normal G 3 2 500 120 0 28 98 83
Dogbox Y Normal G 3 2 500 120 0 28 112 83
(This is how to compare monsters effectively using my guide.)
The reason people bother using them is for their ability to dodge melee
attacks. Equipped with a Level 5/6 Angel Coat, they will be able to dodge
almost any physical/close range attack. However, they can't dodge ranged or
magic attacks as well. They are also fast moving and fast attackers and can
purify Mana Crystals. Their downside is their large attack radius (if an
enemy is in range, it'll go wild and rush it) and their weak attack.
Q. How do you get a Boxdog/Dogbox?
A. I have that info down below.
Q. Why can't my Boxdog/Dogbox/<any other monster> capture other monsters?
A. They can't, only Isaac can capture monsters. I guess I made my wording
too confusing in earlier editions, and have thus changed it to avoid all
further confusion. Monsters can not "capture", they now "purify". Hopefully
this will clear up any more complaints from people crying that their monsters
aren't capturing other monsters when they're only able to purify Mana
Crystals. Thus now, "capture" is the term for obtaining enemy monsters (using
Isaac's magic) and "purify" is the term for changing the Mana Crystals blue.
Q. Can you rate my team?
A. No.
That should be most of the questions that I've missed in the rest of my FAQ,
hopefully it will be of some use to quell the monster newbies of LostMagic.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1.1 Important Facts
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. The maximum number of UP points that Isaac can use, no matter how highly
leveled he is, is 11.
Let me reiterate: MAX UP = 11
2. The maximum level for monsters and Isaac is Level 50. That's it.
Again: MAX LEVEL = 50 (for monsters and Isaac)
3. When choosing elemental monsters, note their weaknesses to other elements:
Fire <--> Water
Wind <--> Earth
Dark <--> Light
Normal is not particularly affected by anything.
Note how they are weak ONLY against each other. That's it. Period.
4. Every monster can equip one item. Only one item. And Isaac can not equip
any items. While this isn't an Item Guide, it should be noted that, "Items
increase stats by a percentage. Not by a set value. Therefore, trying to
offset a monster's weaknesses by giving it a stat boost is a bad idea
compared to trying to strengthen its strengths (yucky phrase)."
- IcyFighter 5/1/2006
5. The basic run-down of what each item increases (ranging from level 1 to 6):
Life Bracelet - HP
Demon Horn - Attack
Gale Shoes - Movement Speed
Iron Shield - Defense
Dragon Scale - Magic Defense
Hunter Eye - Accuracy
Angel Coat - Dodge Rate
Wind Shield - Attack Speed
Note: Level 5 items can be found on the first playthough, but Level 6 items
can only be found in the New Game+.
Certain Level 6 items are known to be found on the Ultimate Dragon levels:
Hydro Dragons - Angel Coat
Flare Dragons - Demon Horn
Gale Dragons - Gale Shoes
Earth Dragons - Iron Shield
Shine Dragons - Dragon Scale
Shadow Dragons - Hunter Eye
6. Only one Boxdog or Dogbox is obtainable per playthrough of the game. It is
unobtainable if you go down the Evil Path.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1.2 Tips
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Note that when facing mages/sages with a certain element, using a monster
of the same element will absorb that element's magic as HP. For example, my
Flare Hounds will absorb any fire-based spells that an enemy mage casts, as
HP. This also works in the opposite way, don't use fire spells on enemy Flare
Hounds unless you want to juice them up.
2. True for pretty much every element category (this is just an observation):
Fire Element Monsters have higher Attack Strength
Wind Element Monsters have higher Movement Speed
Water Element Monsters have higher Dodge Rate
Earth Element Monsters have higher Physical Defense
Dark Element Monsters have higher Accuracy
Light Element Monsters have higher Magical Defense
3. Consider having monsters that have Purify abilities. Mana Crystals allow
Isaac to recharge Mana at a faster rate. This means, more spells and the
ability to cast in rapid succession. Monsters with purify abilities can be
ordered to go and purify Mana Crystals while Isaac is dealing with other
monsters or Crystals. Micro-management is the key to conquering a map
within a time limit, especially when the objective is to purify all the Mana
Crystals in 5 minutes. An interesting point, the more Purify-able monsters
around a Mana Crystal, the faster it will be purified.
4. Consider whether you want a lot of weaker monsters or a couple of big
strong ones. They both have benefits and weaknesses. Big groups of weaker
monsters, generally use less UP, have more monsters, but do less damage and
have less HP. Small groups of stronger monsters use more UP, do more damage
and typically have more HP and defense. Also note that, large groups will
take more magic to heal on the fly, while smaller groups use less magic
because they're easier to target individually and less time is needed to
control each one. If you're on a map that has a lot of spawn circles,
sacrificing one of your big strong monsters is very costly and painful. It
would be wise to consider using a mix of stronger and weaker monsters or just
a lot of weaker ones.
5. Consider using some air monsters. Not necessarily the wind element, but
the monsters that can fly. Flying monsters have the ability to cross any
terrain without being affected by any of their side effects. Air Units can
also cross trenches and fly over big holes. They don't slow down in water,
get singed by lava, get poisoned by the purple marshland, or get influenced
by moving sand.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1.3 Capturing Monsters
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Capturing monsters is rather simple, especially true later in the game when
you have a lot of monsters to soften up your target/prey and act as a shield
to give you time to cast your magic.
The key to capturing any monster is the basic Level 1 Dark rune (shaped like
a backwards question mark). In the beginning, this is the only way to capture
monsters. However this isn't reliable for the stronger monsters. Once you're
able to combine runes you can combine the Level 1 Dark rune + any other
element to improve your chances to capture elemental monsters.
If you didn't get that:
Level 1 Black Rune + Level 1 Element Rune
Level 1 Black Rune + Level 2 Element Rune
Level 1 Black Rune + Level 3 Element Rune
Where the combination with the third level rune would be the strongest. Also
make sure you're combining the element that matches the target monster's
element.
2. Capturing the Boxbox:
Reunite Taro and Zoe in a small sidequest, which starts after defeating the
Fire and Earth Sages. A blue wand marker will pop up on one of the Windmill
Plains areas. Reunite the two by honestly telling them where you met them,
they will start by asking where you last saw the other. They move between the
Windmill Plains and the Wet-Wood Forests. If you answered all the questions
correctly, you will receive the level 35 Boxdog after defeating the Bishop of
the White Night. (Good Path only)
3. Capturing the Dogbox:
"[Y]ou get it from the 2 kids [Zoe and Taro] if you tell them to go to
Silverpeak [Gorge] and Goldsand [Dune] and eventually meeting in Rudolf, then
you will [receive the Dogbox] after you choose the good path."
- Vanoi 5/5/2006
4. Capturing the Elemental Dragons / Ultimate Dragons:
The Dragons are obtained by going down the Good Path (which basically
involves giving up your wand when the Diva of the Twilight asks for it).
There will be a scene in Tamta Village (I think), and a girl will tell you
that she heard some roars/cries coming from overhead. After that, you'll
notice that there is a new location in the water area and a blue wand marker
over that location. Each dragon has a region that matches its element, and
after beating one level, another one will pop up right after. These monsters
aren't one time deals (as I previously supposed). Johnny Ryals reports that
these dragons can be seen again in random encounters on the <???> areas
where you fought them before.
The order in which the levels come out are:
Water > Fire > Wind > Earth > Light > Dark

not average values or ballparks. At level 50, each monster will have the same
stats as any other monster of the same species.

4.0 Comparison Chart
==============================================================================
This chart was requested by Mad Lord Winder via e-mail. It lists the stats at
level 50 and basic information in spreadsheet fashion for easy comparison. If
you want to compare a handful of monsters, I suggest copying and pasting the
row with the desired monster onto a word/text editing program, where
everything lines up easier with less clutter. Listed in alphabetical order.
I hope that my labels are clear enough, but:
Name - Name of the monster
Purify? - Ability to purify Mana Crystals; [Y]es or [N]o
Element - Element of monster
Move - Movement type; [A]ir or [G]round
UP - Unit Points
# - Number of monsters in a group
HP - HP, Life points, Hit Points, etc.
Atk - Attack Power
Mag - Magic Power (always zero for monsters)
Spd - Movement Speed
Def - Physical Defense
M.Def - Magical Defense
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5.0 Version History
==============================================================================
November 03, 2006 - Version 1.22
I was again brought back to this guide by someone, but this time I found my
own errors. Also made some very minor formatting changes.
September 20, 2006 - Version 1.21
Someone made light of another of my blunders (contributor asked me to change
the displayed name). Forcing me to unearth this relic from my hard drive. A
couple of other various edits/corrections.
July 22, 2006 - Version 1.20
I've received a few e-mails and seen a lot of message board postings with
people confusing my terms. So to avoid any more confusion, I've changed
anything having to do with "Capturing" Mana Crystals into "Purifying" Mana
Crystals. Now there should be no more confusion about why your monsters can't
capture enemy monsters (which they can't, so don't ask anymore).
June 22, 2006 - Version 1.11
Correction to Boxdog.
May 12, 2006 - Version 1.10
Finally finished all the Level 50 monster stats.
New Comparison Chart added.
May 12, 2006 - Version 1.08
Level 50 stats for Hydra, Salamander, Ghost, Death Fang, Rune Gnome, Hydro
Hound, Runedine, Gigant, Cherubim, Dagon, Death Fish, Undine, Gnome, Day
Walker, and Mush-Mushy.
May 8, 2006 - Version 1.07
Information on Ultimate Dragons added.
Updated stats for Elpia and Cherubim.
May 7, 2006 - Version 1.06
Correction of naming for Multipul and Divider.
May 6, 2006 - Version 1.05
New level 50 monster stats have been added. Thanks to Vanoi and dragonskin.
May 5, 2006 - Version 1.04

Addition of Boxdog and Dogbox info.
Confirmation of Divider and Multipul.
May 5, 2006 - Version 1.02
Finished all the stats, more level 50's needed.
May 4, 2006 - Version 1.01
Correction concerning Knight Orkus and addition of some facts/tips.
May 4, 2006 - Version 1.00
Everything comes together in the first real version.
May 3, 2006 - Version 0.01

6.0 Contact and Suggestions
==============================================================================
Did I make some stupid mistake...? Like bad spelling, bad punctuation, maybe
I don't know my alphabets? If you can help improve my FAQ, by all means,
please do.
If you have any comments or suggestions, e-mail me at:
[email protected]
I'm no master at this game, so don't ask me how to beat someone or a certain
computer character. While I've listed a lot of monsters, that doesn't mean I
know how they should all be used. Think of your own strategies and learn
which monsters work best for you, don't bug me about it.
I'll also note that I don't have any WiFi capabilities where I am currently,
so don't bother sending me any friend codes. This also means that I don't
have any experience playing online, real opponents, so any strategies using
specific monsters would probably help me later if I decide to add a monster
help guide section.
