==============================================================================
2   Introduction
==============================================================================

The purpose of this guide is to take a comprehensive look at fishing in Lost
in Blue 3.

==============================================================================
3   Fishing Basics
==============================================================================

While the ingame tutorials do a fine job, let's go over the basics.

The exciting world of rod fishing will open up to you after you encounter your
first vine. Back at base, ask your partner about it and you'll soon be on your
way.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3a  Making a Fishing Rod
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are three parts to the fishing rod. Hook, line and pole. For the hook
you will need a sharpened rock or bone. For the line you need a vine. And for
the pole, a stick or bamboo.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3b  Bait
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Before you can fish, you will need bait. At first you can only use a worm. You
can acquire a worm by searching the ground in any grassy area.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3c  Finding a Spot to Fish
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Generally speaking, you can fish with a pole when your character is standing
next to water. There are exceptions. You cannot fish at all in the jungle
areas for example. I guess that's where the lab run-off goes.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3c  Selecting a Lure
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The top screen shows what lure you have selected once you are in the fishing
mini-game. You don't have to worry about this at first as you only have worms.
Once more lures are available you can go through the selections using the dpad
or tapping the top left of the touch screen.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3d  Casting
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hit A to cast the lure into the water once the fishing mini-game is on screen
and you are happy with the selected lure.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3e  Moving the Lure
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once you cast your lure into the water, you will be able to move it using the
Dpad or stylus. This has a debatable effect on the success of your fishing,
so experiment as you will.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3f  Reeling in the Catch
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After you get a bite you have to reel in your catch. Do so by using the Dpad
or stylus to move the pole in the opposite direction of how the fish is
moving. You will retrieve the fish from the water automatically when it
reaches the bottom of the screen.

==============================================================================
4   Lures
==============================================================================

Lures are a key factor in determining what kind of fish you can catch. And if
you want to catch all the fish in the game, you are going to have to make
quite a few.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4a  Opening Lures
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In order to make your own lures, you must first successfully catch 10 fish
using a spear, and 10 fish using a fishing pole. At this point your character
will have a monologue about always catching the same fish. Lures will then be
found under Make Tools.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4b  Making Lures
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To make a lure you need a twig. Open the Make Tools menu and select fishing
lure. Then select a twig and you will be able to select what type of lure you
want to make. You then are introduced to another mini-game, which I find to be
sorta fun. Pretty simple, trace the dots to make the lure. Touch the screen
too far from a dot and you will fail. You do not have to keep the stylus
touching the screen through out the process. You can even tap all the dots one
by one if you like, though it's faster to trace.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4c  Unlocking New Lures
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In order to create new types of lures, you must first successfully catch fish
fish with the initial lures. When you've caught the requisite number of fish
using a lure, the next grade of lure will be available.

The below shows the lure progression. Numbers are number of successfully
caught fish.

Sea Lure A x 5   -> Sea Lure B x 10   -> Sea Lure C x 15
                                                         \
River Lure A x 5 -> River Lure B x 10 -> River Lure C x 15 -> Special Lure
                                                         /
Lake Lure A x 5  -> Lake Lure B x 10  -> Lake Lure C x 15

Note that the Special Lure can be seen in the lure creation screen as soon as
you unlock the three C grade lures, but you cannot actually make it until you
successfully fish the required number of times with the C lures.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4d  The Special Lure
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now we're talking. I consider the Special Lure to be a Sea, River and Lake
Lure D all rolled into one. You will probably use this exclusively once it is
unlocked.

==============================================================================
5   Advanced Fishing
==============================================================================

There are many potential variables involved in fishing. It's difficult to say
exactly how all these factors are weighted. Here we'll take a closer look at
their observed and possible effects.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5a  Location
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Where you fish is a very important factor in determing what kind of fish you
can expect to catch. You aren't gonna catch a Sea Bass in the Lake.
Furthermore, within each map there are many areas and specific locations from
which to fish. Choosing exactly the right spot is the first step to catching
rare fish.

Detailed information on where to catch the rare fish can be found in the Rare
Fish section of this guide.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5b  Lure Selection
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some fish will not bite unless you are using the appropriate lure type and
grade. The confirmed lure requirements to catch particular fish are listed
in section 7 of this guide.

Once you have unlocked the Special Lure, you can catch any fish in the game,
so unlocking it should be your first goal if you want to catch 'em all.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5c  Fish Population
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It would seem that each map has a certain fish population when enter it. It is
perhaps neccessary and at least extremely beneficial to catch all the 'common'
fish in an area first before you start going for the rare fish. Once you have
depopulated an area of a certain number of the standard fish, you should only
be reeling in rare fish.

Exiting and reentering a map seems to reset the population, so make sure you
don't have to leave for fishing rod or lure materials before you have caught
all the fish you want.

hylin402 suggests that you can do your preliminary fish depopulating using
the spear, and save yourself quite a bit of time and materials.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5d  Pole Quality
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This may effect the exact number of uses you can get out of a pole before it
breaks.

Might as well make the best rod possible, but I wouldn't worry about it too
much.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5e  Lure Movement
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

While the Album text for the various Lures implies that you need to move the
lure in just the right way to catch the rare fish, I can't say that I have
noticed a difference when trying different movements. In fact, most if not all
of the rare fish can been caught without moving the lure at all from the time
of casting to getting a bite.

So my advice here is to do what you like. Try tapping out the Konami Code. I
did, and it certainly helped pass the time.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5f  Time and Tide
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The character dialogue in game would suggest that the moon has an effect on
fish, but I haven't noticed such. It certainly feels like there is a mystery
factor that works against you sometimes... so maybe this is it.

If you can't seem to catch any fish, try again later, or move to a slightly
different location. You may see better results.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5g  Weather
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I can't say if one way or the other if weather conditions have an effect on
fishing. Doesn't really seem like it to me, but the Album entry for the Char
would suggest that it does.

Don't let the rain get you down.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5h  Patience
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not to be overlooked, there's another important factor in fishing. Patience.
Sometimes fish just won't bite. Who knows why? (If you do know, please tell
me.)

Don't give up, it is possible to catch all the fish in the game.

==============================================================================
6   Other Methods
==============================================================================

Using a Fishing Pole is not the only way to gather Seafood. In fact, you'll
probably already have used a couple other methods before you try fishing with
a pole.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6a  Digging
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Likely the first method you'll come across to collect Seafood. There's an
abundance of Seaweed and Shellfish littering the beaches just waiting to be
stuffed in your bags.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6b  Spear fishing
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When you first collect a stick you'll be prompted to ask your partner back at
base about the possible tools you can make with it. One of which is the Spear.
Equip this item, head to the water and you'll soon have a bag full of fish.
Spear fishing is fun and easy, but the variety of fish you can catch with this
method is limited.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6c  Get Food
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can also send Eric or Kumiko to search for food and they will often bring
back fish. Sometimes even rare fish that would be difficult to catch with a
pole. Including the only fish that the author of this guide has yet to catch
by any other means. Char!!!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6d  Diving
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Diving is not available until late in the game. There are three locations in
the game where you can dive. Two of which are places to collect Seafood, and
are the only places to get the Abalone and Red Sea Urchin.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6e  Fish Trap
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The fish trap can be made with a vine and basket. You can only use it in a
couple spots where you can already spear fish, and doesn't seem to get you any
different fish than doing so. I believe you can safely make this once to get
the entry in your Tool Album then forget about it.

==============================================================================
7   Seafood Album, Locations and Methods
==============================================================================

The following is a list of all entries in the Seafood Album, the maps where
they can be found, and the easiest confirmed method by which to catch them.

Seashore 1 refers to the starting beach for Eric and Claire.
Quarry, the starting map for James.
Seashore 2, the Treehouse map.
Seashore 3, the map north of the bamboo grove.
Seashore Any, all of the above.

Lure listed is the lowest grade lure confirmed to catch the rare fish. Lower
grades than what is listed may work, but have yet to be confirmed.

*The Field map can only be fished by Eric, and only while accompanied by
James. The area where you can fish there is accessed by climbing down the
cliff in the southwest part of the map as Eric while joined with James.
Apparently they were members of a troupe of acrobats on the ship.

==============================================================================
8   Rare Fish
==============================================================================

Now let's take a closer look at those rare fish that can only be caught using
the fishing pole. While the above locations will put you in the right area,
some fish can only be caught in a very specific spot on the map. You will
likely notice if you have hooked a rare fish, because they move quite a bit
more on the line than regular ones.

Remember that you may have to catch a number of common fish before you can
expect to land these ones.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8a  Striped Beakperch   - Strong & hard to catch
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This fish can be found at the Quarry or the Field fishing area. I haven't
actually noticed a trend in what area of those maps it populates.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8b  Olive Flounder      - That's a funny face
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seashore 2, the treehouse beach is where you'll catch this fish. Head to the
northmost section of the beach to catch this fish.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8c  Sea Bream           - Caught a good one!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This fish can only be caught by Eric, from the Field fishing location. To get
to this fishing spot you have to be accompanied by James. Head to the SW of
the map and look for a spot at the cliff where you can climb down. This drop
is of such a height that only the Eric+James combo can scale it.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8d  Parrotfish          - It has a sturdy beak
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This fish can be found at Seashore 3, the map north of the bamboo grove. Try
fishing the northern part of the beach to catch it.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8e  Yellowfin Goby      - Has a long lower jaw
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Yellowfin Goby is at Seashore 2, the treehouse beach. The middle portion
of the beach is where you can expect to catch this fish.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8f   Sea Bass           - Has a large mouth
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can catch this fish at Seashore 3, the beach north of the bamboo grove. I
was able to catch this fish at the middle portion of the beach.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8g  Catfish             - Big mouth w/ moustache
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rare fish found in the Underground Lake. From the elevator, head directly
west to the nearest body of water and you can catch the fish there.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8h  Black Bass          - White river fish
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This fish can be caught on two different maps. At the Lake map, head to the
lower section and try fishing at the base of the left waterfall, from the
right hand side. At the Undergroud lake, fish the body of water directly west
of the dive spot.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8i  Arowana             - A big ancient fish
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just north of the watering spot in the Underground Lake, on the other side of
the large rock there, you should be able to catch this fish.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8j  Carp                - Fatty, freshwater fish
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can find this fish in the underground lake. Enter from the lab and head to
the north edge of this western part of the map. You should be able to catch it
there.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8k  Salmon              - Red river fish
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Salmon can be found at the Lake, in the eastern lower lake. Fish that
body of water from the raised bit of land you climb a log to get to.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8l  Japanese Huchen     - A rare large catch!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another fish found in the underground lake. From the elevator, head south to
the wall and fish in the body of water to the west.

On a personal note, this fish was the most difficult to reel in of all the
fish for me. It actually got away 3 times before I could catch it. Consider
yourself a skilled angler if you can bag this one.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8m  Shrimp              - Sprightly, lively animal
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is a short path to the SW of the Quarry cave which leads to an overlook.
This is the Dolphin Spot, and you can catch the shrimp there.

==============================================================================

10  Seafood Recipes
==============================================================================

Here we have all recipes that use ingredients from the Seafood Album. If
you're crazy enough to catch all the fish in the game and complete the Seafood
Album, then you're probably also trying to complete the Recipe Album.
You won't be able to do this in one playthrough unfortunately, as Kumiko
cannot catch the Sea Bream. And while Eric can catch and grill the Sea Bream,
he cannot use the cooking styles neccessary for many of the other recipes.

11  Tips and Tricks
==============================================================================

In this section we'll talk about things that I couldn't figure out how to
include in the other sections of the guide and also revisit some important
points already mentioned.

-If you're trying to complete your Seafood and Recipe Albums, I would suggest
doing the majority of this as Kumiko. She can catch all the fish except the
Sea Bream, and cook everything too. Get the Special Lure on a Kumiko
playthrough to do this. Eric doesn't need the Special Lure to catch the one
fish, and make the one recipe that you'll be missing from your Kumiko
playthrough. While it may be tempting to do the bulk of your fishing as Sam
while playing the Survival Challenge, since he starts off with the A lures
unlocked and can cook everything, it's much easier to focus on fishing during
a Kumiko game since you can use your companions to keep your base stocked and
your fire lit.
