| I. Introduction |
o===========================================================================o
Fire Emblem: Shin Monshou no Nazo Hikari to Kage no Eiyuu is the latest
instalment of the Fire Emblem series, and is a remake of Book 2 of Fire
Emblem: Monshou no Nazo, and is a sequel to the events of Shadow Dragon.
The game mechanics have been simplified somewhat, and there are more
gameplay modes. There are three Hard Modes of varying difficulty, and Casual
Mode, where if a character dies, he or she retreats instead of being gone
for good.
The Rescue and Drop mechanics have been removed like in Shadow Dragon, but
otherwise the gameplay is extremely similar to past instalments. A few
features unique to this game include a customisable unit, and Javelins and
Hand Axes have drastically lowered Mt.
I will be assuming you are playing through Hard, Maniac or Lunatic and
not on Normal Mode. The hard modes are drastically different from Normal
Mode, as enemies get exponentially higher stats as you go up in difficulty.
For example, in Lunatic Mode Astram's Hero buddies have around 24 Speed,
almost twice that of their Speed in Normal Mode, 13.
Lunatic Mode enemies start capping stats around Chapter 17, and have forged
Silver weapons to boot, rendering most of the late-joining cast useless due
to their bad base stats.
Of course, units that are good on the harder modes will be even better on
normal, so this can be used as a reference, but certain characters like
Roshea would be viable in Normal Mode instead of near-worthless in the
harder modes.

A) Stats and Growths [BASC.A]
_____________________________________________________________________________
As most of you may know by now, characters in Fire Emblem have a certain
chance of increasing a stat upon a level up, known as growths. You'll
notice that I put two sets of Base Stats and Growths for characters that
can reclass. The top represents their stats in their base class, the bottom
represents their absolute stats.
The absolute stats are the stats of a unit, minus the base stats of their
class. To find out the stats of a unit in that particular class, you take
their absolute stats and add it to the base stats of that particular class.
Similarly, to find their absolute stats, you subtract the base stats of their
class from their stats in that class, with a few exceptions.
Classes also have their own base weapon ranks. When a unit's combined Weapon
EXP (WEXP) reaches a certain point, that unit will gain a rank in that
weapon.
WEXP: 0 - 29 - E Rank
30 - 74 - D Rank
75 - 134 - C Rank
135 - 194 - B Rank
> 195 - A Rank
Several classes have base WEXP, meaning that the unit gets a boost to their
weapon rank by being in that class.
D Swords (+30 WEXP) - Hero
C Swords (+75 WEXP) - Swordmaster
D Lances (+30 WEXP) - Dracoknight
Paladin
General
D Axes (+30 WEXP) - Warrior
Berserker
D Bows (+30 WEXP) - Horseman
C Bows (+75 WEXP) - Sniper
D Staffs (+30 WEXP) - Bishop
D Tomes (+30 WEXP) - Sorceror, Sage
B) Supports [BASC.B]
_____________________________________________________________________________
Supports in this game function similarly to Shadow Dragon. Units gain support
points when they are fielded together in the same map, and when their support
points reach a certain level their support level increases.
There are three levels of supports:
Level C: Gives +5 Hit and Avoid to the recipient
Level B: Gives +10 Hit and Avoid to the recipient
Level A: Gives +10 Hit and Avoid, and +5 Critical and Critical Evasion to
the recipient
Most supports are one-way, and do not tie in with the conversations at the
base. Support levels are independent of the base conversations. For
example, Luke gets 3 base conversations with My Unit, after 7, 10 and 14
battles together respectively. However, their support levels increase
after 6, 12 and 19 maps together.
There are some supports involving the characters that join toward the
end of the game that come with that level already unlocked. In that case,
the support bonus will apply immediately after recruiting the character.
I haven't added in the requirements for the support levels and base
conversations yet, but Kelsper's FAQ has information on that, and you can
also check Serenes' Forest for the same information.

| III. Characters |
o===========================================================================o
Gets Support Bonus from: My Unit, Shiida, Merric, Elice
Marth is your Lord, and he must be fielded on every map. Marth is essential
for beating the final boss due to the Falchion, and any other unit simply
will not do. Marth is much better than in Shadow Dragon, as his better
growths mean he is more useful as a combat unit.
Marth has the exclusive Rapier, which allows him to severely damage
Cavaliers and Armors. They aren't very common and the Rapier is locked
to Marth, so I don't recommend that you forge it. Marth performs decently
with a Steel Sword as well, and he does not promote, meaning that after
level 20 he will recieve the same amount of EXP as unpromoted units
speeding up his leveling, especially in lategame.
In addition, the Shield of Seals banishes Earth Dragons, and gives Marth
a boost of +2 to all his stats. It makes Marth quite useful after Chapter
20.
However, Marth falters in one area, his caps. Marth has a measly Speed cap
of 25, meaning that he fails to double endgame enemies in the harder modes.
In addition, he isn't very flexible as he has 7 Move, and is the only
character capable of visiting villages and seizing the throne. Marth may
also be relegated to chest duty in some cases as your two Thieves, Julian
and Rickard, have paper durability and bad combat. He doesn't have a lot
of opportunities to fight, and he may be stuck leeching kills for more
EXP.
Marth is a good unit, however his status as a Lord makes him quite inflexible
and he cannot reach his full potential as a result. He is still extremely
useful, and of course is required to clear the game.
_____________________________________________________________________________
2. My Unit [CHR.MYUN]
_____________________________________________________________________________
Supports: Everyone except Lena, Maria, Nyna and Elice
Gets Support Bonus from: Marth, Katarina, Luke, Rody, Ryan
My Unit (MU) is one of the best units in the game, mostly due to his / her
huge availability. MU is the character you create before beginning the game,
and you can award stat and growth bonuses depending on which Past, Present
and Future boosts you pick.
There isn't much I can do if you can't read Japanese, you'll either have
to rely on trial and error to get the bonuses, or you can check out
Serenes' Forest which has information on the boosts.
You cannot have two of the same type of boosts. For example, you cannot
select both Cleric's Child and Kind for your MU, as both give Defence.
You can choose MU's starting class. For a male, he has access to:
- Fighter
- Cavalier
- Knight
- Myrmidon
- Archer
- Mage
- Mercenary
For a female, she has access to:
- Myrmidon
- Pegasus Knight
- Cavalier
- Archer
- Mage
There are many good combinations and classes to choose from.
Fighter MU has the best offensive power, and has a near-monopoly on Axes
since the only good Axe user you get is Minerva. He should reclass to
Pirate immediately after Prologue as it has higher growths and better
bases.
Male Cavalier MU is probably your best bet for a Class Set A MU. He has good
mobility and durability compared to the other Class Set A MU, and generally
has more flexibility after promotion.
Knight MU is the best MU for Prologue purposes, because Knight gives MU a
high Defence stat which will allow him to tank quite a few hits from the
enemies in Prologue. Thanks to the Past / Present / Future boosts, Knight
MU won't be suffering from many Speed problems. However, Knight is a bad
class beyond Prologue. If you have unlocked mixed class sets, you can
reclass to Cavalier and retain good durability and offense, but I advise
against Knight MU if you haven't unlocked mixed class sets.
You should focus on Speed first and foremost. There isn't much of a
difference between the three types of Speed boosts. An MU with Honorable
only starts overtaking an MU with Noble's Child after 20 levels on average.
Lunatic (and on Maniac to some extent) Noble's Child is better as it allows
MU to double more initially. However, if you are using a Knight, it is
better to go Honorable as the extra initial speed is largely superflous
since you cannot double for most of the Prologue.
Gets Support Bonus from: My Unit, Marth, Rody, Ryan, Cecil
Luke is a great unit. His growths are stellar and he is with your party from
start to finish, giving him many opportunities to gain experience. Luke is
average in the Prologue, I'd recommend building up his Lance Rank for him
to wield Javelins if you're planning on keeping him a Cavalier. He does
better with a Steel Sword, of course.
Luke is in Male Class Set A, which grants him access to Dracoknight, Paladin
and Swordmaster, all great classes. Dracoknight in particular has great
mobility due to 10 Move and Flight.
I find Luke is best reclassed into a Myrmidon or Swordmaster to make better
use of his D Rank in Swords. Luke's speed as a Cavalier is subpar at best,
and he won't be doubling much if at all. However, Luke has high Strength as
a Myrmidon and he doesn't suffer from many Speed problems due to the higher
base speed and speed growth. Swordmasters are extremely powerful, especially
in Maniac and Lunatic as they are the only class capable of doubling almost
all enemies, and get a 10% Avoid boost which works well with supports.
Luke isn't great as a Paladin as he has to build up his Lance Rank to use
Javelins and Steel Lances, and Cavalier bases and growths are pretty bad.
Luke is a great unit given the right class, and even in his base Cavalier
class he can still stand a chance against the unforgiving enemies in
New Mystery.
Gets Support Bonus from: My Unit, Marth, Luke, Ryan, Cecille
Rody is similar to Luke, both of them having the same jointime and relatively
similar base stats. Rody has a lower Strength and HP growth, but a higher
Skill and Speed growth, and a D in Lances compared to Luke's D in Swords.
Both Rody and Luke are competing for experience in the Prologue, as they both
get the most boosts out of more levels in the Prologue compared to other
characters such as Cain or Merric. In most cases, Luke should be prioritised
over Rody, as Rody doesn't have many major advantages over Luke.
Rody is basically outclassed by Draug, who comes with similarly spread
bases and growths, but comes at level 5 with a significant advantage
over Rody in base stats. Rody doesn't have a unique niche to himself whereas
Luke's higher Strength growth gives him better offense. An untrained Rody
is nigh-useless on the higher difficulties, and he can't catch up if he
isn't given levels in the Prologue.
Rody is still quite a decent unit, but he isn't stellar as he is outclassed
a fair bit than Draug and may not get much-needed EXP from Prologue as a
result.
Gets Support Bonus from: My Unit, Marth, Luke, Rody, Katarina
Cecille is the last member of the Cavalier trio of the 7th division of
Altean Knights, and she is by far the worst of the three. Cecille doesn't
have many opportunities to garner EXP in the Prologue, unlike Luke or Rody
due to her late jointime. Better units such as Merric and Athena are also
available, depriving her of a deployment slot.
Cecille's base stats mean that she isn't servicable. Cecille has a -2 base
Defence and a poor base HP, meaning she gets killed in one hit by everything
in Maniac and Lunatic modes, and doesn't fare much better in Hard as well.
Her atrocious defence means that she has to be constantly protected from
harm, and is a liability to the team.
Furthermore, Cecille's bases aren't good enough for her to fight decently.
She still can't double unless she is a Myrmidon, and doesn't have good
range unless she is a Mage, or god forbid an Archer. Her Skill and Speed
growths are well above-average, but they are moot considering the work
needed to get her out of her precarious situation.
Cecille can be workable with an Angelic Robe, which basically means she
isn't one-shotted by everything, but she still has offensive issues and
the Robe could be better off on someone else.
Cecille has good growths, but she is let down by her poor bases which
severely hinder her combat.
Arran is the Jeigan archetype of this game, and he is miles better than his
conterpart in Shadow Dragon, despite having contracted an illness along the
way.
Arran actually has base stats, and joins at the start of Chapter 1. Arran
is Class Set A, meaning he gets access to Paladin, Dracoknight and
Swordmaster, and he also has an auto B-Rank in Lances allowing him to
wield a Silver Lance. Arran is one of your best characters for a while
and is immensely useful for most of the earlygame. Arran does falter towards
midgame, and for obvious reasons, but he is very useful in earlygame and
should be dropped when he isn't useful. Even then, Arran has access to
Sniper, allowing him to kill problematic Dracoknights and Wyrms which
pop up in a few chapters, giving him a little bit more utility in that
respect.
Arran is very useful in earlygame and has better combat than most of your
other units at that point, but he starts to falter around Chapter 7 and you
should drop him by then, or restrict his use to sniping flying stuff.
Gets Support Bonus from: Ryan, Draug, Norne, Jeorge
Gaggles is back, with a vengance! Well, not really. Gordin has sub-par
growths but good bases. He isn't a good choice to train as his potential
is limited. He does have utility in Chapters 2 and 3 as Steel Bow almost
one-shots Dracoknights, and I guess he is passable in chapters with
Wyrms. However, Gordin shouldn't be trained as his growths aren't good
enough for the endgame.
Gordin is stuck in Class Set A, which isn't advantageous for him as the
Archer class has inexplicably low movement and base stats and he isn't
viable as one. However, if you've unlocked mixed class sets by clearing
Hard, Maniac or Lunatic once with the good ending, Gordin can reclass
to Hunter and have better growths and base stats. Gordin still isn't
worth using over others.
Gets Support Bonus from: My Unit, Marth, Gordin, Luke, Rody
Ryan is Gordin's younger brother, with lower base stats but much more
availability and better growths all around. Ryan comes in Prologue-2, and
can grab some kills in the later chapters as well, although he needn't
be given priority. Ryan is quite useful in Chapters 2 and 3 due to the
Dracoknights, and he can grab quite a bit of experience off the
promoted Dracoknights.
Ryan's growths are solid all around, although his Speed is a little lacking.
Ryan can effectively fill the spot of Wyrm / Dracoknight slayer. It is
important to have two or three characters capable of smashing Flying units
such as these, as they will swarm your units and pose a great threat to
your weaker units.
However, I'd advise to steer clear of Ryan if you haven't unlocked mixed
class sets. Archer is a downright horrible class to be stuck in, and Ryan
will have trouble keeping up unless he is a Hunter.
Gets Support Bonus from: My Unit, Marth, Gordin, Norne
Draug is the very definition of a glass cannon. Although he does not seem
that way initially, Armor Knight has a high base Defence and Defence growth.
Draug, like almost everyone else is terrible as an Armor Knight, but he
shines when he is reclassed.
Draug has a high Speed growth and base Speed. Due to his stellar base speed,
he can double the majority of enemies assuming he grabs one or two Speed
level-ups. Draug is pretty good in Prologue as he can tank enemy hits
well, and does good damage back.
After Prologue, Draug has quite a few reclass options to choose from. He can
either go Pirate, Hunter or Cavalier, the last one only applicable to mixed
class sets. Although Draug has an E Rank in Bows and Axes initially, he
can quickly get up to par after a few chapters of combat and boast great
offense after he gets access to Steel weaponry.
Draug has a pitiful Defence growth and base, and despite his above-average
HP, he is still getting killed in two hits and taking major damage from
stuff that attacks him. I prefer Draug as a Hunter for that reason as he
can grab EXP from slaying Dracoknights and Wyrms, and attack effectively
at two-range without being forced to take a counter.
Mallesia is your primary healer for most of the game. Mallesia comes with
the highest Magic growth in the game, however her other growths and stats
aren't spectacular. However, she does come with a good rank in Staffs
allowing her to use Heal and Mend right off the bat, and she and Lena are
the only characters which can use Hammerne. Hammerne can repair the useful
Warp and Rescue Staffs in addition to A-Rank weapons like the Hauteclere,
which makes her much more useful.
Mallesia will have durability problems for the rest of her existence since
her bases are bad and she doesn't get as much EXP from healing compared to
your combat units. Her primary purpose is healing though, and she does it
better than most of the cast and can reach B Rank for the Again Staff, or
A Rank for Fortify easily.
Gets Support Bonus from: My Unit, Marth, Minerva, Cain, Palla
Catria is a rare unit that joins early and stays great throughout the game.
Catria has great bases and some of the best growths in the game, and she
is one of your best combat units at the moment when she joins.
Catria does great as a Pegasus Knight, and can use the Lady Sword as a
Cavalier which has high Mt, allowing her to one-round many units. Catria
will come out with great Speed, Strength and good HP and Defence, allowing
her to take quite a few hits.
Catria is female and she has access to Paladin, Dracoknight and Swordmaster,
all of which are great classes to use. Catria can also be promoted into a
Falcoknight using an Elysian Whip, which can be obtained earliest in
Chapter 11. However, she will be ready for promotion well before Chapter
11, and the Whip should go to Palla or Shiida instead.
There's not much to say about Catria, her stats certainly do the talking.
Warren has subpar growths, and has difficulty getting Speed due to his
relatively low Speed growth. Warren is quite noticeably outclassed by other
potential Bow units such as Draug or Ryan, but he may be a viable
alternative to Ryan if you haven't unlocked mixed class sets, since Hunter
is infinitely preferable to Archer.
Gets Support Bonus from: My Unit, Ogma, Bord, Barst
Cord is another subpar unit that is outclassed by many other characters.
Cord doesn't excel in any particular area except in Speed where he has a
really high growth in. Cord's base stats are nothing special either, and
he doesn't have any WEXP at base which makes him hard to train. Cord is
stuck with Iron for a while, and there isn't any point in using him over
someone like Draug who has the same rank but better bases and growths.
Gets Support Bonus from: My Unit, Marth, Merric, Nyna
Linde comes with great growths and good bases, and she can use Aura and
Rezire right from the start. She is a good choice for a mage, as you'll
need one to wield Starlight. However, Linde faces a major problem - her
durability is lacking. Linde gets killed outright by many units like
Cecille, but she deals a bucketload of damage with Aura, one of your most
powerful attacks at that point in the game. Linde is workable with an Angelic
Robe, but she isn't one of your best choices for a Mage due to her problems
at the start.
Gets Support Bonus from: My Unit, Minerva, Abel, Frey
Palla joins in Chapter 3 and is immediately your best unit in terms of
offense for a while. She gets to use the Silver Lance and has a high base
Strength and Speed, giving her a great advantage over other units. Palla's
growths are fairly good, except for that atrocious 5% Speed growth. Leaving
her as a Pegasus Knight would be the best choice since it has the highest
natural Speed growth that will allow her to gain some much-needed Speed.
Palla can also promote to Falcoknight for an extra bit of speed as compared
to Dracoknight, but she must wait until Chapter 11 to promote. Palla's speed
problem isn't as great a hindrance as it may seem, she has a high Speed base
and plenty of levels gain Speed, although you might want to toss her a
Speedwing to allow her to double many more units and have much greater
offense. Palla is great throughout the game despite her bad Speed growth,
and is one of the best units in the game alongside Catria.
Gets Support Bonus from: My Unit, Ogma, Cord, Barst
Bord is another subpar Fighter with growths and bases that simply do not
cut it. However, Bord does come with C Axes which allows him to use the
Hammer, and he has a bit of use in Chapter 3x since he can one-shot the
Armors near the start with a forge. Otherwise, he isn't much use and isn't
worth using.
Joins: When you visit the northwest village in Chapter 3
Appearance: Man with red hair and wearing a fingerless glove

Initial WEXP: N/A
Supports: Matthis, Rickard, Lena
Gets Support Bonus from: My Unit, Marth, Lena
Julian is your first Thief, and despite his stellar growths he will be
relegated to Thief duty most of the time. Julian has good growths but his
bases don't grant him much in the way of combat. Julian is quite fragile
and can only use Iron or Devil Swords for quite a bit of time before he
gets his D Rank, and cannot reclass. He doesn't get the 10% Avoid bonus
like a Swordmaster would, and his Strength caps at a measly 20.
He is very useful for opening chests, bridges and doors, but shouldn't be
fielded purely for his combat utility as he has bad combat.
Matthis is a joke character. His bases and growths are horrendous, and he
doesn't have any combat ability to speak of. He is annoying to recruit, and
doesn't pose any threat to your units as an enemy. Steer clear from Matthis.
Wrys makes a comeback in New Mystery, after being replaced in Book 1 of the
original by a Vulnerary of all things. Wrys has horrid bases and growths,
but he is your only healer for the Prologue and is quite useful there.
Wrys may make a better healer than most other units in the main story
if he reached D Rank in the Prologue, which allows him to use Mend. He
is viable as a Staff user if only for the WEXP he got in the Prologue.
Otherwise, you'll be better off with another unit reclassed to Curate or
Cleric.
Ogma is a decent unit, coming with good bases and growths. Ogma is good in
the Prologue as his good speed allows him to double quite a few enemies.
However, you may want Draug for his tanking abilities over Ogma's superior
offense.
When Ogma joins in Chapter 4, he isn't doubling the enemies unless he got one
or two Speed level ups in the Prologue. However, he still performs well if
reclassed to Myrmidon (for the higher Speed base and growth), and comes with
C Swords as well, a short distance away from B which allows him to use
Silver. Ogma isn't stellar at jointime, and you might not have the space
to field him alongside superior units like Palla and Catria, but he is
relatively decent if trained.
Yumina has pretty bad bases and passable growths, but her main utility
lies in being a staff unit. Yumina comes with a C Rank in Staffs which
puts her nearer to B and A Rank compared to other units, and she can function
well as a healbot like Mallesia since she can use Mend and Physic right off
the bat and is only a short way from B Staves for Recover and Again.
Yubello is a horrible unit, with bad bases and average growths. Yubello has
a base of 1 in Magic as a Mage, and has an absolute base of -2. Every other
unit will have a higher base in Magic than Yubello. Yubello is also an
absolute pain to train due to his non-existent offense. His poor base
speed coupled with his inexplicably low Magic will make training him a
chore. His low HP and Defence means that he will die from anything and
everything, and it is pointless to give him an Angelic Robe as his combat
isn't good enough to justify the investment.
Gets Support Bonus from: My Unit, Yumina, Yubello, Nyna
Sirius is another prepromote Paladin like Arran. However, Sirius comes with
better base stats and great growths compared to Arran. Sirius also comes
with enough WEXP to wield a Silver Sword and a Silver Lance, two extremely
powerful weapons that boost his offense tremendously.
Sirius has good bases and growths, but he comes promoted and with relatively
low bases compared to your other trained units. Since his EXP gain is nerfed,
he will eventually fall behind when your other units start promoting.
However, Sirius is very flexible due to being in Class Set A. He can switch
to Dracoknight, Swordmaster or Sniper and is a great help in midgame.
Sirius is similar to Arran in that both of them are a great help initially
as they come promoted and have access to promoted classes and superior
weaponry. However, Sirius is much better in the long term due to his growths,
and while he starts falling behind he is still an excellent unit despite his
lower stats.
Gets Support Bonus from: My Unit, Marth, Shiida
Castor is the second Hunter you get, but his growths and bases are average
and he is quite subpar as a result. Castor has a C in Bows and he can use
the Killer Bow at base, but it only has around 30% chance to critical and
he doesn't double enemies, so it isn't worth it. Castor is slightly better
than Warren though, if only for the higher Speed.
Shiida has freakishly high Speed, Skill and Luck, but low Strength. Shiida
is quite useful in the Prologue as she has good mobility and doubles many
enemies.
Shiida isn't as good as she was in Shadow Dragon, because enemy armies
aren't completely made out of Paladins and Armors. In New Mystery, Cavaliers
and Armors only populate around half the chapters, the other half being taken
up by Dragons. Still, the Wing Spear is very useful as it allows Shiida to
kill Armors and Cavaliers in one round.
Shiida's low Strength isn't as much of a hindrance as you'd expect. Shiida's
Strength is still good enough to put a notable dent in other enemies, and
her offense is good due to Wing Spear and her good Speed allowing her to
double almost everything. She is a good candidate for the Elysian Whip in
Chapter 11 since she can reach the Falcoknight Speed cap easily, and can
use the Lady Sword as a Falcoknight.
Furthermore, Energy Drops aren't highly contested, only Marth would want
them for Endgame, and Shiida could reasonably get one to jumpstart her
offense.
Shiida is a great unit due to her high Speed and exclusive weapon, and
her low Strength isn't much of a detriment.
Gets Support Bonus from: My Unit, Ogma, Bord, Cord
Barst has average bases and growths, but he is definitely better than Cord
or Bord. Barst has D Axes unlike Cord, and he actually has a Speed growth
unlike Bord. Besides My Unit and Minerva, Barst is your best bet for an
Axe-wielding unit, and he has a near monopoly on Axes if he is used.
Barst should be reclassed to Pirate if you wish to use him, as Pirate has
better offense and growths in exchange for less HP. Barst is a pretty
decent unit, however he isn't really exceptional like other units.
Appearance: Boy with long blue hair

Initial WEXP: N/A
Supports: Dice, Maris
Gets Support Bonus from: My Unit, Julian, Dice, Maris
Rickard is your second Thief, and like Julian he has bad combat, and his main
use lies in opening doors and chests. However, there aren't many maps where
you'll require two Thieves, and generally Julian is a marginally better
choice due to his higher stats. Still, Rickard can do the same thing and
there isn't much difference between the two in terms of thieving.
Gets Support Bonus from: My Unit, Marth, Palla, Catria
Frey joins with decent bases and good growths. However, at that point in the
game his bases aren't really good and it takes quite a fair bit to get him
going. However, his stellar growths means he will have great stats, just
that it takes quite a while to get there.
Frey is only 60 WEXP off from Silver Lance which gives him a powerful weapon
to use afterward. Frey has good growths, but at that point in the game there
isn't much space for him, and he takes quite a long time to take off.
Gets Support Bonus from: My Unit, Marth, Draug, Gordin
Norne is a pretty bad unit. Her bases at that point aren't good, and her
growths are merely average. She gets a C in Bows, but is stuck with Archer
before promotion, which has only 5 Move and low base stats. She can reclass
to something else, but there wouldn't be much point in doing so considering
her lack of WEXP in anything else and low bases.
Samto is a pretty bad unit. His growths are all below average save for
speed, and his bases are bad as well. He does have C Swords, which allows
him to use the Armorslayer at base, however he doesn't double and doesn't
do much damage as a result. I'd recommend against using him.
Gets Support Bonus from: My Unit, Merric, Ellerean
Wendell has fairly decent base stats as he is already promoted, but his
growth rates are atrocious. He can make a good healbot though, although
there are others better at the job. Wendell can reclass to Bishop for
more base Staff WEXP, and he can reasonably reach C or B Staffs in a short
time. Wendell has bad combat though, and his durability is also bad and
doesn't grow much at all.
Caesar has pretty bad base stats and average growths. He won't do well at
that point in the game since he can't double. C Swords allows him to use
Samto's Killing Edge and the Armorslayer, but it isn't really useful since
the critical rate of the Killing Edge isn't very high, and he doesn't
double Armors or Generals and can't kill them with the Armorslayer.
Caesar has a bit of potential but starts out at a bad time. His base stats
are simply not cutting it at that point in the game.
Joins: After Chapter 6x if you didn't kill him there
Appearance: Boy with red hair and a green bandanna around his neck

Radd is basically Samto with better growths. He isn't worth using due to his
low base stats. He does have good growths but his bases make it hard to train
him, and he will be basically a liability until much later in the game. Radd
has C Swords like Samto and Caesar, but it isn't a huge advantage for him
as outlined earlier.

Nabarl is much better than the past three Sword users due to his superior
base stats and growths. He has a higher Strength and Speed and good growths
in Speed and Luck. Nabarl still needs to be fed kills for a period of time
to get him up to scratch, and he could need an early promotion to stay
viable.
Nabarl is also quite useful as a Cavalier, however he only has E Lances and
has to get that up to a D to use Javelins and Steel Lances. However, he is
pretty solid despite the less Speed.
Nabarl is a decent unit that requires a fair bit of favouritism, but does
well once given the resources.

Feena is your Dancer, and she is the only Dancer in the series that can
fight with weapons. However, her combat is quite laughable despite her
awesome growths. 2 base Strength and E Swords means she isn't hurting
anything, and she should be used primarily for dancing.
Dancing gives an adjacent unit an extra turn, and is very helpful in many
situations. It allows for another attack, or makes recruiting other
characters easier. Feena has bad durability, and her evasion is nowhere
near enough to help her, so you should keep her out of harm's way. Other
than that, Feena is an excellent unit for her Dance ability.
Cain is similar to Frey, except that he comes later and with better Skill
and Speed growths but worse Strength growths. Cain is useful in P-8, but
his contributions there aren't very significant.
Cain comes quite underlevelled and having a C in Swords instead of Lances.
He can use the Armorslayer and Killing Edge, but his Speed isn't good
enough to double. Cain doesn't have many notable advantages over Frey,
as Frey comes quite a bit earlier and has more opportunities to gain
EXP. Cain can be decent if you put a lot of effort into him, but
it really isn't worth it since you don't have a whole lot of space
for him anyway.
Appearance: Old man with a red hood over his head

Bantu has 10 STR, 7 SKL, 8 SPD, 12 DEF and 5 RES with the Firestone, which
are quite sad parameters. 8 Speed means he may get doubled by faster
enemies, and 25 Mt isn't a lot, so he isn't doing much damage. 18 HP and
12 DEF aren't spectacular either, and he doesn't have any growths to
speak of, meaning he is unsuited for long-term use. Stay away from him.
Roger is similar to Draug, except he comes a full 7 chapters later and is
quite underlevelled when you get him. He has high speed, but it's doubtful
whether you can get his weapon ranks to D in the later chapters, and there
isn't much space for him. He does have potential but is basically a vastly
inferior Draug.
Jeorge comes with your first legendary weapon, the Parthia, and does good
damage due to his high rank in Bows which allow him to use Silver and
Parthia. He is very useful for sniping down Wyrms. There are quite a few
Wyrms in the chapters that follow, and Jeorge kills them in one hit with
Parthia (he only needs Silver in Hard Mode).
Jeorge doesn't have a lot of long-term utility since his growths are
below average, but he does a good job in the chapters with a lot of
flying enemies.
Supports: Jake, Est, Frost, Michalis, Maria, Catria, Palla
Gets Support Bonus from: My Unit, Marth, Maria, Michalis, Frost
Minerva comes with the second A-Rank weapon you get, the Hautclere. She is
probably the most viable axe-wielding unit besides My Unit, since she comes
with an A Rank in Axes.
Minerva has a lot of Mt with the Hautclere, and can OHKO fragile but
dangerous enemies such as Mages. Minerva's Speed isn't great, but she
makes up for her lack of doubling with Hautclere and the effective weaponry,
Halberds and Hammers.
Minerva is also very flexible. She can go Swordmaster for an auto-C in
Swords, she can go Sniper or General if the situation calls for it.
Otherwise, it is best to leave her in Dracoknight so she can make use of
A Axes.
Minerva is a great unit that is decent throughout the game, even though she
may not be able to match up to trained units such as Palla.

Staff, 30 WEXP
Supports: Ellerean
Gets Support Bonus from: My Unit, Marth, Ellerean
Etzel has middling Speed, and he does get doubled by faster enemies like
Wyrms. However, Etzel has Staff utility, he comes with WEXP in Staffs,
and unlike Wendell actually has growths, meaning that he can heal more
with higher Magic. Etzel also can use Excalibur, which comes on Merric
in the next chapter, and slaughter Wyrms with it.
The best use for Etzel is to have him be a healbot and spam Staffs to
provide support for your units. Etzel can help out in a pinch, but the
fighting should be left to your main combat force which have better
stats.
Gets Support Bonus from: My Unit, Marth, Wendell, Elice
Merric is pretty good in Prologue, being able to hit Resistance and deal a
lot of damage to Armors.
When Merric rejoins in Chapter 10, he is noticeably underlevelled. His
base stats are pretty bad as well, and he wouldn't stand a chance against
the enemies. However, Merric is your best bet for a Starlight user, as
Merric has Excalibur which allows him to slaughter Wyrms in Chapter 11.
There are quite a few Wyrms in Chapter 11, and simply killing one nets
Merric a bucketload of experience. Merric has the second-highest speed
growth for a Mage, and he can avoid getting doubled by Gharnef and wear
him down with Starlight.
Merric can also heal when he is promoted which is an extra bonus.
Merric is a great unit, mostly due to his ability to obliterate Wyrms
and make up for his relatively shaky start in Chapter 10. Merric has
a relatively high Speed and can use Excalibur, making him a great unit
for taking down flying enemies.
Ellerean is Merric's rival. He joins with a C in Tomes and Thoron, letting
him deal a boatload of damage to enemies. However, his growths are merely
average and his bases aren't good enough, and he can't use Excalibur like
Etzel or Merric until he gets to B Rank in Tomes.
Ellerean is pretty subpar, although he does a lot of damage at base there
isn't much going for him otherwise.
Dice is rather... dicey (pun intended). Dice is pretty average, with passable
bases and average growths. He isn't a good choice due to his growths and he
does require a fair bit of favouritism since he joins so late.
Maris is manlier than half the male cast. Despite that, her growths and stats
aren't that great, and like many other units before her, she can be useful
if you bother to put in the effort, although at that point it isn't worth
it.
Horace is a pretty average prepromote that joins in Chapter 10x. Although he
is already promoted, his bases aren't that good. If you haven't unlocked
mixed class sets, Horace is stuck in Class Set B which doesn't give him
as much flexibility as Class Set A would. Otherwise, he is a decent unit
but below-average on a whole, and only useful for a few chapters after
he joins.
Gets Support Bonus from: My Unit, Shiida, Minerva, Linde, Malliesia
Jake makes a comeback, and is no longer a Ballistician but a normal combat
unit. Jake's bases are pretty poor, but he has awesome growths.
Unfortunately, he is locked to Class Set B which doesn't give him many
options to reclass. He can go Berserker, but there are only two Berserker
slots in the game and he might not be a good choice for it.
However, Jake does shine if mixed class sets are unlocked. If he can
reclass to Sniper, he will have B Bows. With an Arms Scroll, he can use
Parthia and one-shot Wyrms to level up. He has a 105% Speed growth as
a Sniper, and good stats everywhere else, so he will start improving
easily. You might want to give the EXP to other units like Merric
though, so Jake isn't the best unit to use but still viable in that
situation.

Darros is another subpar unit. He has average bases and bad growths, and he
isn't worth using in the long term due to his growths. He isn't useful
when he joins because enemies are quite ridiculous at that point and he
doesn't stand a chance.
Gets Support Bonus from: My Unit, Sirius, Belf, Leiden
Robert is the first of the Sable Knight trio, and he comes promoted as
a Horseman. Robert's bases are pretty bad, despite his good growths he is
a pain to train. He can't slaughter Wyrms effectively, and there are a
myriad of better candidates for the job.
Gets Support Bonus from: My Unit, Sirius, Robert, Leiden
Belf is the second of the Sable Knight trio, and he coems with better bases
than Robert, but lacking in growths. His Speed isn't good, and his growths
are merely average. You can promote him early, however Belf isn't a great
unit due to his average growths.
Gets Support Bonus from: My Unit, Sirius, Belf, Robert
Leiden is the last of the Sable Knight trio, and the most balanced of the
trio. Leiden has above-average growths and good bases, which makes him the
most viable among the three.
With an early promotion, Leiden can have acceptable combat due to his high
base Speed and good growths everywhere, unlike Robert or Belf, which have
bad bases in Speed, and in Belf's case inferior growths. Leiden is in
Class Set A, and he has the option to go Swordmaster, Dracoknight or
Sniper, all three great classes in their own right.
Leiden, like Jake is quite good if you're willing to put in the effort,
but unlike Jake he requires less training to get up to par.
Beck isn't a Ballistician, he has been turned into a combat unit in New
Mystery. Beck is similar to Jake, both of them can get going by killing
Wyrms if reclassed to Sniper. However, Beck has merely average growths
compared to Jakes' awesome growths, and he isn't worth the effort to
train him to an acceptable level.
Athena is pretty awesome in the Prologue, she doubles nearly everything and
kills a lot of enemies in one round. However, she rejoins at Chapter 13x,
which is very late. Athena's bases are relatively bad at that point in
the game, and she isn't a good choice due to her low stats and average
growths.

limitations, and he can make a good filler at that point in the game.
Also, Xane can copy Feena, but he can't Dance for other units as Feena =(

Tiki is the second Manakete you get, and unlike Bantu she actually has
good growths. Tiki's main use is to slaughter Dragons, since she does quite
a bit of damage with her dragonstone and the effective bonuses it provides.
Otherwise, Tiki is pretty bad as she has low HP, despite her high Defence
she will still get killed in two hits, and she shouldn't be fielded for
anything other than dragon-slaying.
Gets Support Bonus from: My Unit, Minerva, Abel, Palla, Catria
Est is the last unpromoted unit you get in this game, and as is Fire Emblem
tradition, she has phenomenal growths. However, she starts off at a very
low level and comes very late. She has no combat to speak of and has to
be babied for a long time before she can get up to par with your other
units.
Est dies to just about everything until she reaches a high level, and she
isn't worth the effort it takes to raise her up to that high of a level.
Gets Support Bonus from: My Unit, Marth, Est, Cain
Abel is similar to Dolph, he has bad stats, and won't stand up to enemies
in his joining chapter. Despite his good growths, his bases don't allow
him to fight effectively.
Astram's stats are just painful to look at. Astram has a measly 16 Speed
as a Hero, a class with high base speed, and gets doubled by almost
everything in his joining chapter. Obviously, despite A Swords granting
him access to Mercurius and the Hero Sword, he is near unusable and
his growths are below average, making him an extremely bad unit.
Katarina, like many other units before her has bad stats and cannot hold up
to enemies at that point in the game. However, she comes with a C Rank in
Staffs as a Sage, only 30 WEXP to a B Rank as a Bishop. She can use Physic
and Mend right off the bat, and can get to a B relatively easily to use
Again, making her a good choice for an extra healbot.
Joins: Talk to her with Marth in Chapter 17. You must not kill the level 1
Gra Soldiers and Archers. She will become an enemy should you kill
one after she is recruited.
Frost is a late-joining bishop with bad stats and a C Rank in Staffs, so
he may be useful to some extent, but you already have quite a few capable
staff users so you will not need him in most cases.
Gets Support Bonus from: My Unit, Wolf, Sedgar, Vyland
The first member of the Wolfguard you get, Roshea is horrible for the exact
same reasons as the other prepromotes before him. His base stats are too
bad for him to have any use.
Joins: Have Minerva wait on the village in Chapter 21 before Turn 15. Then,
have Marth visit the village.
Marth does not need to visit the village before Turn 15, but Minerva
needs to get there before Turn 15.

Michalis has the beastliest bases in the entire game, with nearly-capped
Speed and high Strength and Defence. Michalis also has an B in Axes and
C in Lances meaning he can use both effectively. However, his luck is
low meaning he will face high crit rates due to enemies having
high Skill, meaning he is very risky to use.
