Hello, roadtosalvation here. Welcome to my Official Strategy Guide Errors FAQ
for Brady Games Official Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light strategy guide.
In the real world I go by John and have a strong affinity towards video games
(at least the ones I grew up with - go PS1!!) and video game music. I'm often
found doodling in sketchbooks where my art experiments with slogans/wordplay.
I also enjoy writing reviews and blare music from Game Boy games when driving
my car.
Really, it's a lot more exciting than I'm making it sound... promise! (*lie*)

===============================================================================
I discovered Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light through Matrix's reworking
of Final Fantasy III on the DS. For some reason, I found the first ten hours
of FFIII to be pretty boring but something changed and I ended up liking the
game despite its limitations. Because of that, I was curious about the other
products Matrix worked on and promptly picked up a copy of 4 Heroes. I can't
say I was bowled over while playing the game but then I didn't know how much
I enjoyed it until I finished and started some other another DS games. I may
have been done with the game but it wasn't done with me :) This is something
I haven't experienced with too many modern games (I have a HARD time getting
into the current games of today compared to those I grew up with) so while 4
Heroes isn't as special as some of the other games out there it's special in
this regard. A new "personal classic" if you will. Anyway, while I was going
to work on Final Fantasy IV and complete the "Matrix" trilogy on the DS this
guide kind of interrupted that. No worries though... FF4 can wait for a bit.

The only other FAQs I have written up to this point is a soundtrack and music
guide for Wild Arms 2 (an underrated title) and a Item Maximization/Checklist
for this game. I can't make any promises on future guides but I would LOVE to
do some more work for The 4 Heroes of Light:) One area of 4 Heroes that needs
some TLC is enemy drops/steals (you'll see below that there are some problems
with Brady's work in this area) and there are some things that are in need of
being confirmed. However, since I've recently put over one-hundred hours into
the file I used to write the Item Maximization/Checklist I'm going to take an
extended vacation from the game and any big projects involving it so I do not
burn myself out on it.

As the title of this FAQ suggests, you will need a copy of the Official Brady
Games Strategy Guide to make sense of everything that follows. In general I'm
not too big on official guides (outside of looking through them for a dose of
nostalgia) and I'm more inclined to use fan generated ones on sites like Game
FAQs but the work Brady published for the 4 Heroes of Light isn't too shabby.
I only have two main complaints:
Introduction and Section on Aggregate Target Values
---------------------------------------------------
In all honesty I do not like how fast the reader encounters the section about
Aggregate Target Values. As informative as this section is in reality there's
something very off-putting about it that makes the game seem more complicated
than it really is. Trust me, Aggregate Target Values may be important but you
don't need a blackboard (like these paragraphs somewhat incline) to calculate
who the enemy is likely to target. You don't need to be a psychic either....
The Bestiary
------------
The Bestiary is home to quite a few errors but the major point I want to make
here is splitting the enemies into two groups (enemies encountered before the
Party Host and Hero Crowns and those encountered after that point) would have
made this section a lot more user friendly than it currently is since the all
the data for enemies prior to crowns listed above is no longer a factor after
that point.
Beyond this, the REAL prize (or reason) to own the Official Strategy Guide is
the data it contains that cannot be seen in the game itself. Veteran 4 Heroes
players know this data mainly consist of drop and steal rates from the game's
various enemies. It is definitely handy information.

> Error Listing ..................................................... [HOL06]
===============================================================================
Pg.8: Other Status Effects
--------------------------
- On the chart explaining status effects the description for Lux doesn't list
that Lux also gives the character the AP Up Status.
- Additionally, Lux is absent from the list of abilities that give you the AP
Up status on the section focused on the AP Up status.
Pg.13: Temporary Allies
-----------------------
- The list of equipment for Krinjh omits the Aero Tome he has; the text above
it insinuates he has more than one spell when he doesn't.
- The list of equipment for Rekoteh omits her various white magic spells.
- The list of equipment for Rolan omits his Thundara Tome.
Pg.19: Crown - Bandit
---------------------
- In the text describing the Pillage ability, the word "Plunder" should be at
the end of the last sentence - not "Pillage."
Pg.36: Crown - Seamstress
-------------------------
- Oddly enough the information on the Seamstress' crown armor has the defense
and magic defense listed prior to the statistical bonuses it provides; such
numbers don't appear for any other crown-based armor....
Pg.46: Weapons - Axes
---------------------
- The Wizard's Axe in named the Afreet Axe in the game.
Pg.71: Accessories - Bloody Ring
--------------------------------
- The effect of the Bloody Ring is wrong, but that is due in part to it being
wrong in the game itself ;)
Pg.72: Accessories - Flash Ring
-------------------------------
- Despite what it written you can't buy Flash Rings in Urbeth or Spelvia.
Pg.86: Enemies Around Horne
---------------------------
- The entry for Lizardman [A] in the bestiary is actually for the Lizardhawk;
there is no entry for *this* version of the Lizardman.
Pg.89: Enemies in North Caves
-----------------------------
- The entry for Lizardman [A] in the bestiary is actually for the Lizardhawk;
there is no entry for *this* version of the Lizardman.
Pg.91: Enemies in Witch's Mansion
---------------------------------
- The entry for Lizardman [A] in the bestiary is actually for the Lizardhawk;
there is no entry for *this* version of the Lizardman.
- No designation as to which version of the Mimic appears.
Pg.100: Sand Devil
------------------
- No "[A]" designation on Sand Devil.
Pg.101: Enemies Outside Liberte
-------------------------------
- The entry for Lizardman [A] in the bestiary is actually for the Lizardhawk;
there is no entry for *this* version of the Lizardman.
Pg.104: Enemies in Pirate Hideout
---------------------------------
- No designation as to which version of the enemies appear in the area.
- The entry for Lizardman [A] in the bestiary is actually for the Lizardhawk;
there is no entry for *this* version of the Lizardman.
Pg.106: Enemies in ???
----------------------
- No designation as to which version of the enemies appear in the area.
- No mention of Mimic in enemies encountered section.
Pg.111: Hunting Caves
---------------------
- "B" is missing on map/staircase.
- Number for Thunder Axe is in wrong location.
Pg.117: Demon [B]
-----------------
- The common steal may be missing from the steal field.
Pg.122: The Great Tree
----------------------
- Treasure 3 (Wood Lance) is in wrong area on maps.
- Treasure 5 (Hi Potion) is in wrong area on maps.
- No mention of Mimic in enemies encountered section.
Pg.126: Ice Caverns
-------------------
- A big mistake (or rather omission) here. These maps include the hidden part
of the Ice Caverns but the guide does not tell you how to get there or that
there are treasure chests here! These treasure chests are the two that keep
a lot of players from achieving the 100% chest achievement!
Pg.127: Behugemoth [A]
----------------------
- Another omission here and in the bestiary. The steals from Behugemoth are a
bit different during the one-on-one fight with Jusqua when compared to what
the monster is carrying when fighting Jusqua and Brandt. Definitely an area
that needs to be looked into in a future FAQ.
Pg.132: Invidia Underground
---------------------------
- The location of the Inferno Stave (1) is a bit off; the same is true of the
(2) Book of Shiva.
Pg.133: Ice Dragon
------------------
- No "[A]" designation on Ice Dragon.
Pg.136: Spelvia Dungeons
------------------------
- No designation as to which version of the Mimic appears.
Pg.142: Geri & Freki
--------------------
- No "[A]" designation on Geri & Freki.
Pg.143: Rolan
-------------
- No "[A]" designation on Rolan.
- Picture of Rolan is taken from fight on top floor of Mysterious Lighthouse,
not from the fight in Spelvia.
Pg.147: Mt.Gulg
---------------
- No "[A]" designation on Buffohelm.
Pg.148: Belphegor [A] & Cubes
-----------------------------
- No "[A]" designation on Cubes
Pg.153: Leviathan [A] & Tentacles
---------------------------------
- A curious thing; the tentacles do not have their own entry in the bestiary.
Pg.155: Ice Dragon
------------------
- No "[B]" designation on Ice Dragon.
Pg.155: Enemies in Sun Temple
-----------------------------
- No "[A]" designation on Ghoul.
Pg.159: Enemies in Moonlight Temple
-----------------------------------
- No "[A]" designation on Buffohelm.
Pg.160: Enemies in Quicksand Castle.
------------------------------------
- No "[A]" designation on Minotaur.
Pg.165: Satan
-------------
- No "[A]" designation on Satan.
Pg.168: Enemies in Star Chamber
-------------------------------
- "Behugemoth" should be "Behugemore"
Pg.170: Belphegor [B] & Cubes
-----------------------------
- No "[B]" designation on Cubes
Pg.177: Item Obtained From People During The Adventure
------------------------------------------------------
- List should include Trylion's Ring. If you sold the initial three then skip
talking to Trylion as Yunita you could miss out on the ring that way :(
Pg.177: Items Availiable For Sale Only Before Defeating Rolan in Rolan's...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
- There is/are all kinds of wrong in this list... where to start....
First off you don't defeat Rolan in Rolan's Soul; you defeat Geri and Freki
in Rolan's Soul - you defeat Rolan in his chambers in Spelvia. Second, your
chance to buy the Elementalist Robe and Ranger Outfit is not lost after the
defeat of Rolan - the items in the shop only change after you leave Spelvia
for the first time *after* beating him - there's a difference! Furthermore:
The Traveler's Garb is NOT lost beyond this point. You won't be able to get
any more for a while but they return in Horne later on before AND after the
defeat of Satan.
You CANNOT miss out on the Black Ring. It is still sold in Urbeth after the
darkness falls - I don't know where that came from.
The part about missing the Silence Cape should also include the Sleep Cape.
Thing is you MUST buy these in Arbor BEFORE you go down the hole in the Ice
Caverns as Brandt. The misinformation that is here is REALLY BAD as you can
clearly see.
You cannot buy Flame Daggers in the second half of the game but that can be
fixed by stealing them :)
There are some other items that should be on this list that are not. If you
are interested check out some of the FAQs on GameFAQs - I cover this aspect
of the game in great detail in a Item Maximization/Checklist FAQ (shameless
plug time!!) since its so important to obtaining the all items achievement.
Pg.177: Items Unique To Bosses
------------------------------
- Generally this list is right, but it fails to mention that some bosses have
elemental capes as steals. Elemental capes prove to be more than helpful in
the game so I'd suggest looking over the steals in the bestiary.
Pg.180: Level 90 (Weapon)
-------------------------
- As was mentioned on Pg.46 (Weapons: Axes) the Wizard's Axe actually goes by
the name of "Afreet Axe" in the game.
Pg.183: Sand Devil
------------------
- No "[B]" designation on Sand Devil.
Pg.186: Mysterious Tower
------------------------
- The Mysterious Tower goes by the name of "Mysterious Lighthouse" in-game.
Pg.189: Buffohelm & Ghoul
-------------------------
- No "[B]" designation on Buffohelm or Ghoul.
Pg.189: Greaps
--------------
- No "[C]" designation on Greaps.
Pg.196 ~ 239: Tranquilizers (where are they man?)
-------------------------------------------------
- This one is kind of funny as it actually encompasses the entire bestiary! I
looked over this data real close and saw that - supposedly - no monsters in
the game drop tranquilizers. However, as much time as I've dropped into the
game I know this to be untrue. So what does this mean? It means some of the
data in the bestiary is wrong. It would also seem you can't steal them. How
about that....
Pg.196: Arch Demon
------------------
- The Arch Demon has no rare steal listed in the steal field. Could it be the
legendary Dark Cape? Who knows???
Pg.213: Lizardman [A]
---------------------
- A classic mistake of mistaken identity. In reality, the information present
in this entry is not for Lizardman [A] but for the Lizardhawk - the picture
and name are incorrect. So where's the infomation for the 3EXP Lizardman? A
bit of bad news: it is nowhere in the guide meaning that info will never be
known :(
Pg.227: Demon
-------------
- Same deal as the Arch Demon above - no rare steal is listed.
Pg.228: Rolan
-------------
- This one was mentioned above. The picture here is from when you fight Rolan
at the top of the Mysterious Lighthouse with Rekoteh and not when you fight
him in Spelvia.

FF4HoL GameFAQs Board: While I can't really remember which members posted the
tricks (like how you steal from bosses more than once)
I'm sure they'll be helpful in creating this document.
SquareEnix: I'll bite my tongue on some certain things and just say I'm happy
that a game like The 4 Heroes of Light managed to make it here to
America. Again, it's probably the newest title I've liked despite
it's older playing style.
Matrix: For developing Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light and their work on
Final Fantasy III on the DS.
Brady: The Brady Games Strategy Guide was very useful despite it is problems.
A good bit of the information in this guide would have been impossible
to extrapolate from the game itself so for that reason I would suggest
buying it. Again, I won't be making direct references to drop rates to
maintain a healthy boundary due to copyright. Additionally, if not for
their strategy guide I might not have bought the game to begin with.
Nintendo: For creating the Nintendo DS. I am not quite the Nintendo fan I was
when the Super Nintendo was out but their handhelds tend to be more
attractive than their consoles these days.
Video Game X-Change: An GREAT mom and pop store that has replaced Gamestop in
my heart and mind. As you would expect, it's SO nice not
to have to go on e-Bay for older games and shell out for
overpriced titles (Mega Man VII is NOT worth $70-80 IMO)
and the store is the reason my collection - and interest
in gaming - has rebounded from the point of extinction.
