VERSION HISTORY (S1VH)
===========================================================================
Version 0.9 (Completed 5/10/11)
First version. The guide is complete, but a few things are unconfirmed,
hence the 0.9.
The purpose of this guide is to assist players in locating the various
items of Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light. The reason I wrote this
guide is very simple: one didn't exist. At time of writing, only two
guides are available on GameFAQs for this game: a walkthrough and a crown
analysis, and neither one covers this topic. After becoming exceedingly
frustrated with having to search the message boards and other sources to
discover where Item X can be found, only to learn that said item could only
be found by stealing it from a boss I'd already beaten, I decided a
comprehensive guide to Item Completion would be worth creating. My hope is
that other players will have an easier time finding things than I did.

ABOUT THE GUIDE (S4AB)
===========================================================================
As I said, this guide will help players find all the items in the game,
with a focus on earning the in-game Achievement for having at least one of
everything. If you didn't know (and this is entirely possible, as the game
never explicitly tells you about it), there are several Achievements
to be earned by playing the game. Each Achievement is noted by a new piece
of artwork on the game's loading screen, when you either load up your save
or quit and return to the title screen.
Most of these Achievements are gained through normal play; completing a
"chapter" (for lack of a better term) of the game will unlock a new piece
of art. There are six, though, that require a bit of extra work. Going
into detail about all of them is beyond the scope of this guide, but one
of them is obtained by finding (and keeping!) at least one of every single
item in the game.
The trouble with this is that many items in the game have a very small
window of opportunity through which to obtain them, and if you miss that
window, you can't get the item. Killed a boss you failed to steal from?
Too bad. Forgot to buy something in town and now the shop's inventory has
changed? Tough nuggets. Missed a treasure chest in a dungeon you no longer
have access to? You're SoL. Whatever the case, this game is very
unforgiving when it comes to 100% completion.
This is where I come in. Using several sources and confirming with my own
eyes, I've created a list of all items in the game* and given details
on where to find them. However, this guide is not perfect. It does not list
every single way to find every single item. What it does is provide at
least one "easy" method to obtain an item and, if applicable, one or more
alternate methods, including at least one method that can be performed in
the endgame, when other methods may be unavailable.
*Truth be told, I can only ASSUME I've listed every item. I have yet to
obtain a few of them, but I have reason to believe this list is complete.
Bear in mind that certain items cannot be obtained in the endgame at all;
if you miss your one and only opportunity, well, sorry. You'll have to
start over.
Please note that this guide may contain spoilers. This is mostly out of
necessity, unfortunately; it's difficult to describe where to find
something if I have to dance around the names of bosses and the like.
Ideally, you've already played the game and are using this guide to find
some items that you couldn't before, but that probably won't be the case
for everyone. I will try to avoid as many spoilers as possible, but
sometimes it will be unavoidable.
===========================================================================
GENERAL INFO (S5GI)
===========================================================================
This section will provide some basic yet important info that will factor
into your hunt for items.
Let's begin by briefly describing the different ways to obtain items.
1. SHOPPING
This is probably the easiest way to get items: Go into a town and buy
from one of the shops. Have your wallet ready.
2. TREASURE CHEST
Throughout the game, you will find red treasure chests scattered around.
Most of these are in dungeons, but a few are in towns. Open them and
the contents are yours.
3. HIDDEN CHEST
In each town, there are eight hidden treasures. Most of them are simply
Potions and other consumables, but a few are rather special.
4. ENEMY STEAL / DROP
Several of the hard-to-obtain items must be stolen from or dropped by
specific enemies. Some are bosses, some are ordinary encounters.
5. WIRELESS
Quite a few items can only be obtained by spending multiplayer points
at the Wireless shops. Thankfully, you can obtain these points without
actually playing multiplayer. We'll get into that later.
6. STARTING GEAR
A number of items are sitting in characters' inventories when they join
your party. Several of these items are unobtainable in any other way.
7. ALCHEMIST
The Alchemist crown has the power to create various attack items.
Though never necessary, sometimes it's easier than hunting an item down
elsewhere.
8. OTHER
Items that can't be found via one of the above seven methods have
special requirements to obtain. These will be discussed in detail later.
Before I go any further, I should mention something important. Without
going into too much detail, there's a certain event that takes place
about midway through the game. This event, referred to as "Darkness Falls"
by many players, causes several changes throughout the world. This includes
the inventory of shops and the enemies found outside and in dungeons. As
such, certain items may be located in different places after this event.
With that said, let's go into detail about the above methods for obtaining
items and discuss a few ways to best take advantage of them, as well as
mention a few limitations.
------------
- SHOPPING -
------------
The thing to realize about shops is that after Darkness Falls, almost all
of their inventories change. If you didn't pick up an item before then,
you'll have to find it elsewhere, assuming that's possible. The easiest way
to prevent this is to buy one of everything the first time you visit a
town. This can get expensive, obviously, and it's unnecessary if you follow
the List further down the guide, but it's a guaranteed way to avoid missing
anything from the shops.
It's also worth mentioning that several shops are only open at certain
times of day (in-game, not real time). If a shop isn't open during the day,
leave the town and wait for nightfall, then try going to the shop again.
This only applies before Darkness Falls, at which point the cycle of day
and night ceases.
For the most part, treasure chests are always available; if you miss one
in a dungeon, you can usually come back and get it later. There are four
major exceptions to this:
1. Guera Caverns - After Darkness Falls, this dungeon becomes closed off
forever. Make sure you get all the treasure chests before then.
2. Pirate Hideout - The chests in the final room of this cave are filled
with new items after Darkness Falls. If you don't get the first set of
loot before then, it's gone.
3. Liberte Whirlpool - Just like Guera Caverns, you can only access this
dungeon and its treasures prior to Darkness Falls.
4. Rolan's Soul - This dungeon is only available at two points in the
story. Luckily, there is only one chest to find. Don't miss it!
Another thing worth mentioning is the chests on 70F and 90F of the bonus
towers. The 70F chest always contains one of seven pieces of armor, while
the 90F chest always contains one of eight weapons. Which item you get is
completely random, and the chest is refilled each time you reach that
floor. Later on, I'll describe a trick to make this a bit less time-
consuming.
The eight hidden items in each town essentially follow the same rules as
ordinary chests; they're always available. If you can't find something when
you first arrive in town, you can try to locate it next time you visit.
They work just like regular treasures, except you can't see them. Press the
action button when you believe you've found one, and voila. There's always
a person somewhere in the town (usually the inn) who tells you how many of
the eight items you've found, so it's easy to keep track of where you still
need to search.
---------
- STEAL -
---------
You can steal from enemies in three different ways, all done with the
Bandit crown (or the Storyteller crown set with Bandit abilities).
1. Steal : Single target, sometimes misses.
2. Plunder: Multiple targets, sometimes misses.
3. Pillage: Single target, never misses.
You can only steal items if there is space in the thief's inventory; a full
pack means your attempt will fail.
It should be noted that most enemies carry several different items, but you
can only get one of them per enemy; any further attempts will fail.
Equipment is usually harder to obtain than other items. Using the Pillage
ability will guarantee a successful steal, but you still can't control
which item you get. This means obtaining certain unique items held by
bosses will require resetting the game, because you will probably not get
the item you want the first time you steal.
--------
- DROP -
--------
Enemy drops are based entirely on luck, and the stuff you WANT them to drop
is, of course, the stuff they almost never drop. Equipping a Fortune Egg*
or the Bandit crown will increase drop rates, though I'm not sure if their
effects stack. Certain items, usually from bosses, are "guaranteed" drops,
meaning the enemy will ALWAYS drop that item upon defeat. It's a good idea
to always leave a few empty spots in each character's inventory, so you'll
have space in case an enemy drops an item.
*Truth be told, I don't know for certain what the Fortune Egg does. The
in-game description says it doubles the number of items dropped, but this
is untrue. My best guess is that it increases drop rates, but I have no
data to confirm this. I can't imagine what else it would do, though.
------------
- WIRELESS -
------------
The items from each town's Wireless shop will more than likely take you a
massive amount of time to obtain, especially if you're playing solo. I
mentioned earlier that you can get multiplayer points without playing
multiplayer, and this is true. For every battle you enter (and that's a key
word there) you will get five points. Whether you win, lose, or escape from
the battle, you get those points. Winning a boss fight earns additional
points, though I don't know how many. Some people say 300, some say 500. It
might depend on the boss. I don't know how many points you can earn by
actually playing multiplayer, because I've never played it. I can only
imagine you earn a lot more that way. But if you're playing solo, there's a
simple trick you can use, one that I'll describe later on, to earn points
rather easily.
Every time a character joins your party, you should make a habit of
checking his or her inventory for stuff you want. The four NPCs (Krinjh,
Torte, Rekoteh, and Rolan) all carry some things that are either completely
unique or very difficult to obtain elsewhere. Be sure to rob them of all
important items before they leave your party!
-------------
- ALCHEMIST -
-------------
The Alchemist abilities Forge and Experiment can be used to obtain attack
items like the Gaia Drum. You can find these items elsewhere in the game,
and you can even buy them at a certain point in the story, but if you
want to make them yourself, the option is there. I can't say with any
certainty that ALL attack items can be obtained this way; I only played
around with the abilities for a short time. I ended up Forging my own
Antarctic Wind and Gaia Drum, then I Experimented on those two, changing
the Gaia Drum into a second Antarctic Wind, then into a Holy Breath, and
finally into a Raven's Yawn. I imagine the other items are fair game, as
well, but you might not want to risk it.
Not all the dungeon names are easily memorable. I expect you to know the
names of towns and where they are, but here are some quick descriptions of
all the other place names I'll use when detailing an item's location,
listed roughly in the order you reach them. This section contains quite a
few spoilers.
Northern Caves = Caves between Horne and Witch's Mansion.
Witch's Mansion = N of Horne, where you fight Louhi / Greaps.
Moonlight Tower = NW of Guera, where you find the Merkmal.
Guera Caverns = Beneath Guera Castle, where you find the Water
Tome; only accessible at night and before Darkness
Falls.
Quicksand Castle = NE of Guera, where all the quicksand is.
Pirate Hideout = SE of Liberte, where you first meet Lilibelle.
Liberte Whirlpool = Inside Liberte, where Aire gets turned into a cat;
referred to as "???" in-game; no longer appears
after Darkness Falls.
Animal Burrow = Caves between Liberte and Guera; only accessible
when all party members are animals.
Fairy Path = Caves between Guera and Arbor.
Hunting Caves = Caves between Liberte and Urbeth.
Great Tree Roots = Beneath Arbor, where you find the Animal Staff.
The Great Tree = Left of Arbor's throne room, where Arbaroc resides.
Ice Caverns = Caves surrounding Invidia.
Invidia Underground = Beneath Invidia, where you find the Dragon Harp.
Tower to the Sky = In Urbeth, where Yunita climbs to Spelvia.
Spelvia Dungeons = Beneath Spelvia, where Yunita reunites with Aire.
Rolan's Soul = Accessed via the pool near the witch in Spelvia;
no longer accessible after the events that require
going there.
Mt. Gulg = Volcano north of Arbor, where you fight Belphegor.
Sun Temple = South of Invidia, where you fight Mammon.
Magic Laboratory = Beneath Horne Castle, where you fight Satan.
Star Chamber = Final dungeon, in the water between Urbeth and
Guera; requires Cetus the whale to access.
Moonsand Ruins = One of the four bonus towers, north of the Witch's
Mansion.
Holy Tree Tower = One of the four bonus towers, in the water west of
Arbor and south of Invidia; requires Cetus the
whale to access.
Mysterious Lighthouse = One of the four bonus towers, inside Liberte on
Cetus the whale's back.
Trial Tower = One of the four bonus towers, northwest of Spelvia.
===========================================================================
THE LIST EXPLAINED (S7LE)
===========================================================================
Here we are, the real meat and bones of the guide. Below, you will find a
list of every single item in the game, broken down into categories and
organized alphabetically. Each entry will be written using the following
format:
Item Name: Self-explanatory
Primary: These are generally what I consider the best ways to obtain the
item, usually because they take less money, time, and/or effort.
Your opinion may differ from mine on what is easier, but there
ya go.
An entry of "Freaking everywhere" means the item is so common,
it's not even worth detailing the location. These are usually
items such as Potions or Phoenix Downs, which are dropped by
multiple enemies, sold in multiple shops, found in multiple
treasure chests, etc. You should have absolutely no trouble
finding these.
Alternate: This is where I list alternative methods to obtain an item
(though not necessarily EVERY method), usually because the
Primary method may have a very small window that players often
miss. However, it should be noted that Alternate methods may
also have small windows, so readers are advised to check all
methods in advance.
Alternate methods are usually more time-consuming or expensive
than Primary methods, so they aren't recommended, but if you
are unable or unwilling to make use of the Primary method, this
is most likely what you'll have to resort to.
Some Alternate methods merely say N/A, meaning "Not
Applicable". It indicates that, to the best of my knowledge,
there are no other ways to get the item, or at least no ways
worth mentioning, often because the Primary method is always
an option.
Notes: Special things worth mentioning, such as whether an item is
one-of-a-kind, or detailed directions on finding a well-hidden
item.
Any entry mentioning the "bonus towers" means it can be found in any one
of the four 100F towers that require the Master Key to enter.
Some entries (both Primary and Alternate) may be marked with [1] or [2],
indicating whether it applies to events before or after Darkness Falls.
Before Darkness Falls, methods marked with [2] will not be available;
likewise, after the event, entries marked with [1] are lost. Entries not
marked are available at all times, or are fixed occurrences, in which case
no marking is necessary.
Some entries are preceded by an asterisk (*). These indicate methods to
obtain the item that I have not personally confirmed, but which sources
tell me are possible. I won't bother to mention them if there are easier
alternatives. For example, Geri in Rolan's Soul can supposedly drop the
Flame Gauntlet. However, since you can easily buy a Flame Gauntlet from a
shop in Invidia, there doesn't seem to be much point in mentioning it.
If an item is sold in a shop, I will list the price in parentheses,
either in "g" (for shops that charge gil) or in "pts" (for the Wireless
shops that require multiplayer points). I will list which town the shop
is in, but I won't get more specific than that; just check all the shops
in that town if you aren't sure which one has the item. Multiple towns are
separated by / marks.
If an item is held in a chest, I will give the name of the dungeon or town
where the chest is located, but most of the time I will not give specific
directions to reach it. Certain cases involving unique or very well
hidden items are the exception.
If an item is in one of the eight "hidden chests" in a town, I will try
to detail where the chest is located, but you may have to do a fair amount
of searching to find it.
If an item is stolen from an enemy, keep in mind that that item is not the
only thing that enemy carries. You might get the item you want, or you
might get something else. Not much you can do other than try again.
Remember to use Pillage if it's available, in order to guarantee a
successful robbery.
If an item is dropped by an enemy, most of the time the drop will be
pretty rare, especially for equipment (usually between 2% and 5%).
Consumables like Potions and Antidotes have a slightly better drop rate,
but it's still not a very efficient way to gather those items. Remember to
equip a Fortune Egg and/or the Bandit crown to increase drop rates. I will
make a note if the drop is "guaranteed".
In cases of both steals and drops, I will mention the specific area where
that enemy was encountered. This is because randomly encountered enemies
can have different versions with the same name, and the different versions
might carry different items. The Lizardman enemies you fight outside Horne
are not the same Lizardman enemies you fight outside Invidia, for example.
They have different stats and carry different items.
Did you get all that? Let's move on. Here's an example entry:
Awesome Item of Supreme Victory
Primary: Chest in Horne Castle.
Alternate: Guera shop (1,000,000g) [1].
Arbor wireless (100,000 pts).
Notes: I made this item up. It doesn't exist. Don't email me asking
where to find it, because I won't answer you.
The Primary method to obtain this item is by finding it in a chest in Horne
Castle. There are two Alternate methods, if for some reason you cannot use
the Primary method. The first Alternate is to buy it in Guera for one
million gil. The [1] indicates that method is only available before
Darkness Falls. On the next line, there's another Alternate, which is to
buy it from the Arbor wireless shop for one hundred thousand points. The
Notes give you important information regarding the item. Pay close
attention to that part.
Seriously.

Alternate: Dropped by Doppelganger bosses in Witch's Mansion [2].
Notes: All four Doppelgangers in Rolan's Soul [1] also have a chance
to drop this, but it's easier to steal from the Aire type.
Sources tell me the Doppelgangers who appear in the Star
Chamber are the same variety as in Rolan's Soul [1], so they
should have the same items.

Alternate: Liberte/Invidia shop (1220g) [2].
Hatchet
Primary: Chest in Northern Caves.
Alternate: Urbeth shop (255g).
Mythril Hammer
Primary: Trade Mythril to Invidia weapon shop owner.
Alternate: N/A
Notes: There is only one in the entire game. To obtain it, do the
following: Arrive at Invidia with Jusqua and Brandt, get
Rekoteh into your party, examine the giant egg, steal a
piece of Mythril from Mythritoise enemies outside at night,
give the Mythril to the weapon shop guy, sleep at the inn,
and return to the shop for the Hammer.
While doing all this, it's important for you to NOT continue
the story by using Firaga on the egg, at least until you have
the Hammer. Once it's yours, you can continue the story by
following either method. But if you cast Firaga on the egg
before getting the Hammer, you will not be able to obtain it.

Alternate: N/A
Notes: This is one of the toughest items to get. Only this enemy
drops it, and only very rarely. The Wyverns tend to appear
above 80F, usually alone, but sometimes in pairs. I highly
recommend equipping a Fortune Egg and/or the Bandit Crown to
increase drop rate.

Notes: To reach the chest in the Tower, use the back entrance.
Claustrum
Primary: Steal from Mammon in Sun Temple.
Alternate: N/A
Notes: This is one of the hardest items in the game to obtain. It's
a very rare steal, and there's no other place to get it. You
will likely have to reset multiple times. It's worth noting
that you supposedly CANNOT steal this from the second version of
Mammon in the Star Chamber, though I don't know that for sure.

Adventurer's Garb
Primary: Steal/Drop from Adventurer on 100F of Trial Tower.
Alternate: N/A
Notes: This is one of the most irritating items to obtain. It's an
uncommon steal/drop, though the steal rate is slightly higher,
according to one source. If you fail to get it, you either have
to restart from a previous save, which means climbing up from
91F and spending who-knows-how-long searching 99F for the final
staircase; or you can beat him, claim the Scribe Crown, and
start the entire tower over again to get his Garb the next time.
Needless to say, I recommend reverting to the last save.
Climbing ten floors again is preferable to climbing all 100.

Primary: In Urbeth, while preparing for Yunita's climb up the Tower
to the Sky, talk to Trylion and answer "no" to her question.
Alternate: *Keep one of the three rings Trylion gives you to sell for her
task.
Notes: That Alternate is a guess on my part, honestly. The three rings
Trylion wants Jusqua to sell seem to be identical to the ring
she gives Yunita, so it should work. There's not really a reason
to, but I thought I'd mention it.
Turtle Shell
Primary: Steal from Mythritoise enemies outside Invidia at night [1].
Alternate: Urbeth shop (500g).
Wind Cape
Primary: Chest in The Great Tree.
Alternate: *Steal from Arbaroc boss in The Great Tree [1].

that refill with new items after Darkness Falls, hence the [1].
Music Score
Primary: Liberte wireless (2500pts).
Alternate: N/A
Notes: This is the item needed to unlock the Musician crown. Just hang
on to it afterwards.
Mythril
Primary: Steal from Mythritoise enemies, either outside Invidia, or in
the forest outside the Hunting Caves (Urbeth side); both must
be at night [1].
Alternate: *Dropped by Iron Golems in Tower to the Sky [2].
Notes: Two Mythrils are required to trade for other items (Mythril
Hammer and Rainbow Boots), which means you'll need three total
if you want to keep an extra one in your inventory. You could
manage with two, but you'd have to pay gold for the Rainbow
Boots in Liberte.
Orihalcon
Primary: Dropped by dragon bosses on 80F of bonus towers (guaranteed).
Alternate: N/A
Notes: You'll need 10 of these, total, in order to upgrade equipment
to the max of +99 and still have one Orihalcon left over.
The above List shows every single item in the game, but most of them are
not difficult to find. In addition, many of them are available in unlimited
quantities at the end of the game, so it's not a big deal if you wait until
then to go hunting for them, as long as you're prepared to spend some time
on a few of them. The Holy Lance, for example, might take you a few hours
of killing Wyverns, but the opportunity will never be lost.
However, there are quite a few items that you'll possibly miss out on if
you don't start your search early, or if you sell the only one the game
gives you. With that in mind, I thought it would be a good idea to create
a set of Quick Lists, mentioning all the items that are either completely
unique or are available in very limited quantities.
----------
- UNIQUE -
----------
These items, to my knowledge, are one-of-a-kind, and they may or may not be
available in the endgame. I advise you to check the above List early in
your game to avoid missing them, and once you do have them, make sure you
don't lose them, because you'll never find another copy.

------------
- FARMABLE -
------------
The items in this list are farmable, meaning you can potentially get an
unlimited quantity, as long as you're willing to continually face the boss
you steal them from. Once the boss is dead, though, you're left with what
you have, and you won't be able to find any more. The three capes and the
Ribbon are also found in chests, so you don't have to steal them if you're
happy with just one. See the section below on Farming to learn more about
it.
The items in this list start out being unlimited, because you can buy them
from shops. But after Darkness Falls*, the shops stop carrying them. Make
sure you get at least one before then, or else you'll never get your hands
on one^.
*The Wood Shield is actually available until you defeat Satan, after which
it vanishes from the shop.
^Several of these items can be found in other places, but in limited
quantities, so be careful with them.
Bolt Sword
Black Book
Stardust Bow
Shining Harp
Knife
Stun Stiletto
Wood Shield
Elementalist Robe
Ranger Outfit
Rainbow Boots
Silence Cape
Sleep Cape
The items in this list are, according to various sources, available in
unlimited quantities even in the endgame, mostly as enemy steals or drops.
However, I have only ever found one copy of these, or I can only confirm
their unlimitedness until Darkness Falls, after which I can make no
guarantees. Use this list with caution.

BOSS FARMING TRICK (P2BF)
===========================================================================
This section gives details on the process known as Farming as it applies
to bosses, and also gives some advice on swiping Ribbons from Ogre Bear.
Disclaimer: Not all of this info came from me. A large portion of it was
found on the GameFAQs message boards. I'm simply displaying it here
because it relates to Item Completion.
Simply put, Farming is when you take advantage of enemy drops and steals to
get an unlimited quantity of an otherwise limited item. For bosses, you're
reduced to stealing, because drops can only be obtained by defeating the
boss. At that point, the boss cannot be fought again, so you can't farm a
boss for drops.
You can, however, farm a boss for steals. The reason is because 4 Heroes of
Light does not have a Game Over screen. Instead, when you die, you lose a
number of gems, and you revive in the last town where you saved. This means
that you can steal from a boss, then let it kill you. You'll revive in a
town, but you'll still have the item you stole. You can go challenge the
boss again, steal again, and die again, as many times as you want.
There are still a few things to worry about, of course. Obviously, you'll
be losing a lot of gems if you die a bunch of times. You can fix this in
one of two ways: Freelancer or Gem Collector.
Freelancer is the job that characters use when they aren't wearing crowns.
The ability of a Freelancer is to prevent gem loss when you die. So as long
as one member of you party is a Freelancer while you farm a boss, you don't
have to worry about losing any of your gems.
Alternatively, you can have one character equipped with a Gem Collector
accessory, available from the Urbeth Wireless shop for 4000 pts. This
accessory grants the same ability as a Freelancer, preventing gem loss when
you die.
It's your choice which one you use. The Freelancer is easier because it's
always available, while the Gem Collector can take a while to buy. However,
using a Freelancer means you'll have fewer useful characters during the
fight, which can make it harder to pull off a successful steal.
Another issue of concern is where you revive. Some bosses are located a
very long way from the nearest town, and dying means you'll have to walk
that entire distance again. Unfortunately, there's no way around this, so
if you're determined to farm a certain boss, be prepared for a lot of
traveling.
There are a few bosses where distance isn't a huge factor, though: Rolan,
Lucifer, and Ogre Bear. Rolan and Lucifer are only a few rooms away from
the save point in Spelvia, so farming them for Lightbringers is certainly
possible. Many people also farm them for Diamonds, but I won't get into
that too deeply. Just know that the same basic principle applies, and bring
a party of Merchants with a Gem Collector equipped.
--------------------------
- FARMING FROM OGRE BEAR -
--------------------------
Ogre Bear is famous for being an inexhaustible source of Ribbons, but he's
also the toughest enemy in the game, so farming here can be tricky. First,
you have to find him. He's in the Animal Burrow after Darkness Falls, the
same place where Aire was beaten by him while she was a cat. After you free
Lilibelle from the web, leave the Burrow and return to that same spot. You
will see a swirl of darkness with eyes, indicating a fixed enemy. That's
Ogre Bear.
Like I said, Ogre Bear is tough; he will kill you quickly if you aren't
prepared. Thankfully, our goal is not to defeat him; we just want his
Ribbon. The easiest way to go about this is to have a Bandit with Pillage
equip some Hermes Sandals. Your Bandit will get the first turn, allowing
you to Pillage the Ribbon immediately. The Ribbon is all he has, so you're
guaranteed to get it. Ogre Bear will then spend his three (yes, three)
actions per round to wipe out your characters. One of his attacks can hit
the entire party, so you might be killed in the first turn. This is why
Hermes Sandals are highly recommended. As long as you have a Freelancer or
Gem Collector, you won't lose your gems, and you'll revive in the last town
where you saved. I recommend Guera, since that town is closer to the side
of the Animal Burrow where Ogre Bear hangs out.
It's also worth mentioning that Ogre Bear's attacks are entirely physical
in nature. This means equipping an Energy Screen will make you invincible.
Many people use this as a means to defeat him, by equipping all four party
members with Energy Screens. However, for farming purposes, an Energy
Screen is not advised, because Ogre Bear won't be able to kill you. If you
can't die, you can't challenge him again for another Ribbon.
===========================================================================
POINT HARVESTING TRICK (P3PH)
===========================================================================
With all the items to get from Wireless shops, it might seem like an
impossible dream to earn enough points for all of them, especially if
you're playing solo. Indeed, you'll need over 200,000 points to get one of
everything. However, as I mentioned before, there's a rather simple trick
you can use to earn points easily. This section covers that trick.
Disclaimer: I didn't come up with all this myself. I pieced it together
with information I obtained from the GameFAQs message board, and I'm
including it here because it's useful for Item Completion.
The central idea is this: since you earn five points for every battle you
enter, you can rake in the points by entering as many battles as possible,
as quickly as possible, with little or no effort on your part. Keep in mind
that I said "enter" battle, not "complete". Winning the battle is not
necessary; you can simply begin a fight and then escape, and you'll get the
five points. The trick is making this process effortless and risk-free.
Let's go over the basics. There are two abilities that enable one to get
out of battle, and both are part of the Wayfarer crown: Run Away and
Escape. Run Away costs 1 AP, but it doesn't always work. Escape never
fails, but it costs 2 AP. Escape also requires you to power up the crown by
one level, which means you need five Rubies and five Emeralds. Both
abilities have priority execution, meaning they will always activate first
in a battle, before any other actions, including the enemies'.
Since Run Away isn't always successful, we'll want to use Escape. With its
2 AP cost, though, one Wayfarer cannot use Escape every battle without
Boosting. That gives the enemies a chance to attack, which puts a dent in
our plans to streamline the process. This can be fixed by simply adding
another Wayfarer. Two Wayfarers can alternate using Escape every battle,
and they'll never run out of AP.
Now we'll make this process effortless on your part. By making use of
Autobattle, you can set up two Wayfarers to use Escape, while any remaining
characters can be set to use Boost. If you weigh down the direction pad
somehow, you can force the party to walk endlessly into a wall in some
enemy-infested area, including the world map. They will continuously enter
battles and immediately Escape, earning you five points per battle. Do this
overnight while you sleep, and you'll wake up with 6000+ points!
The beautiful thing about this is that you can do it incredibly early. As
soon as you have the Wayfarer crown, just cram five Rubies and Emeralds
(easily obtainable in the Horne and Guera regions) into each of two
characters' crowns, and the process can begin. Some people might call this
cheating, but earning 200,000 points would otherwise be incredibly tedious,
so call it what you will.
Later on in the game, you can modify this trick to harvest gems at the same
time. Simply throw in a Merchant equipped with some Hermes Sandals, and set
up Autobattle with Finder / Keeper. The Merchant will dig up a gem before
Escape kicks in. In several hours, you'll have 99 of every gem you can find
in that area!
Climbing the bonus towers is difficult enough, but climbing them multiple
times to find all the armors and weapons in the chests on the 70th and 90th
floors is mind-numbingly boring. You can easily use the Escape trick I
described earlier to avoid fighting, but you still have to walk all over
the place to locate the stairs. Wouldn't it be nice if there was a way to
cut down the time spent doing that? Well, I have great news. I just saved
a bunch of money on my car insur- ...I mean, there's a way to cut the time
down significantly.
Disclaimer: As before, I did not come up with this myself. Members of the
GameFAQs message board informed me of this, and I mention it here because
it aids in Item Completion.
First, some relevant info on the four bonus towers. On every X0th floor
(10, 20, 30, etc.), you have the option to leave the tower and save your
progress. When you return, you'll appear on the next floor after that.
That is, if you take the portal out on 20F, you'll appear on 21F when you
come back.
You can also leave by using a Dragon Wing on any floor. If you do this,
you'll resume progress based on the last X0th floor you cleared. So if you
use a Dragon Wing on 21F, 29F, or any floor in between, you'll appear on
21F when you return. However, using a Dragon Wing on the actual X0th floor
will cause you to resume progress based on the PREVIOUS X0th floor, not the
one you left from. That is, if you reach 40F and escape with a Dragon Wing
rather than use the portal, you'll resume from 31F, not 41F.
Armed with that knowledge, you can do the following trick: When you reach
70F or 90F, open the chest. The item you get is irrelevant, although
hopefully it's something you want. Now, do NOT use the portal to escape.
Instead, use a Dragon Wing. You'll return to the last town where you saved.
Go back to the tower. You'll find that you resume progress 9 floors below
the one you reached (61F or 81F, respectively). If you climb up those
floors again, you'll reach 70F/90F and find that the treasure chest is
refilled! Claim another item, use another Dragon Wing, and return to climb
those floors again. Repeat as often as you like.
This can greatly reduce the time needed to obtain the 70F armors and the
90F weapons. Instead of climbing all 90 floors to get a weapon every time,
you climb a mere 9 floors and achieve the same thing. Just make sure you
keep enough Dragon Wings on hand.
Unfortunately, you can't use this trick to fight the dragon bosses on 80F
repeatedly. If you Dragon Wing out after beating the boss, he won't be
there when you climb back up the 9 floors. You'll have to restart the
entire tower to make the boss respawn. A bummer, I know. Still, the trick
itself is incredibly handy, so it's worth doing, even if you can't use it
to gather Orihalcon quickly.
Okay, so no one has actually asked me any questions yet, but I expect that
people might, so I'm answering some preemptively.
Q: How come you don't give info on the items themselves, like weapon stats
or in-game descriptions?
A: This guide is only intended to help you FIND items, not tell you how to
use them or which ones are better than others.
Q: The Bradygames guide mentions something called a Wizard's Axe, but it's
nowhere in your guide. What's the deal?
A: As far as I know, this item doesn't exist. No one I've talked to has
ever found one. My best guess is that the Wizard's Axe is actually the
Afreet Axe (which the Brady guide does NOT mention), and they just
screwed up the name somehow. The listed stats for the Wizard's Axe are
identical to those of the Afreet Axe, which lends weight to the idea
that they're one and the same.

THANKS TO . . . (P6TH)
===========================================================================
Square Enix, for creating the game. It may have its faults, but overall,
it's a great game with a classic, oldschool feel to it.
Bradygames, for writing the official strategy guide. Although riddled with
errors, their guide gave me a place to start when I began my item hunt.
GameFAQs, for providing a place for game-lovers the world over to come
together, talk about what they love, and give each other advice.
The members of the GameFAQs 4HoL message board, for helping me confirm a
lot of information I was unsure about, and generally being a great help
in my efforts to create this guide.
