Version 2.0 - Finally decided to add enemy locations. The reason it took so
long is because I had to master my Hard file first. Had I known
I wouldn't have access to my regular file ahead of time, this
wouldn't have taken so long. Also added killing tips for some of
the tougher foes.
Version 1.6 - *goes through e-mail one by one and makes corrections
accordingly*
Version 1.5 - Konami finally decided to release the equation for how Luck
affects drop rates, and as such the appropriate section has
been updated. Also fixed a few other typos here and there.
Version 1.4 - I was able to fix a few more errors and add a few more tidbits
thanks to many a reader's e-mail.
Fixed the Bone Ark soul description in which I said that Bone Ark
was the only way through the spiked hall in the Subterranean
Hell, and fixed the weapon descriptions in which it was stated
that Great Swords fell under the Clubs category. I also added a
tiny little piece about the Soul Eater Ring.
Oh yes, and it turns out that the drop rates listed in Double
Jump's guide (the rates I was given permission to use) all
factor in the Soul Eater Ring bonus and were in fact double
what they should be. Those numbers have now been fixed. Whoops.
I kind of figured something was up when the Warg's drop rate was
*supposed* to be 96% after the SER bonus, but wasn't.
Summary: Drop rates fixed, and everyone wins. No longer do you
need to e-mail me in disgust about Peeping Eye and The Creature's
2% drop rates being too high. Thanks.
Version 1.3 - The guys at Double Jump kick ass. Not only did they read and
appreciate this guide, but one of them was even nice enough to
skim it for errors and note that the drop rate for the Iron
Golem was wrong. There _may_ even be information about how
the Luck stat affects the drop rates and whether or not the
Soul Eater Ring and the Luck stat are cumulative before long.
Stay tuned.
Version 1.2 - Added Synthesis information and flow chart; fixed a few minor
errors.
Version 1.1 - Fixed a few errors courtesy of Luigiboy2's input, and added in
monster MP and item/soul drop rates.
Version 1.0 - This is the first version of the guide, so there will obviously
be typos and errors and such. I will limit them with a spell
checker of course, but not everything can be perfect. If you see
anything that is glaringly wrong and feel the need to contact me
about it, be my guest. I'm always open to people pointing out my
mistakes in anything I write, because leaving them in there
would just look silly.

Hello, and welcome to my Bestiary for Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow. I did a
similar FAQ for Symphony of the Night, and after playing Dawn of Sorrow I
absolutely had to do it again given how much ass the game kicks.
Like in my SOTN Bestiary, this guide will read exactly as a complete Enemy
menu would within the game. The nifty thing about Dawn of Sorrow is that you
don't need to go anywhere to see your Enemy menu. It's right there under the
start menu; no trips to a Long Library need apply. However, the main
difference in Dawn of Sorrow is that the Enemy menu does not list some of
the key categories from SOTN, most notably the enemy's HP and the EXP given.
I was able to figure out the EXP on my own, but full credit goes to Double
Jump's official Dawn of Sorrow strategy guide for the HP values of each
enemy. Full credit also goes to them for the MP that each enemy has, as well
as item and soul drop rates.
After a few updates, I was able to add a ton of stuff not seen in the game.
Finally, ages after initially making the guide I've added locations and kill
tips. Stupid college not allowing me free time =p
++++++++++++++++
+ II. Bestiary +
++++++++++++++++
Hit Points: The monster's Hit Points.
Mind Points: The monster's Mind Points.
Experience: Amount of experience the enemy gives you when you kill it.
Unlike SOTN, this is a fixed value and doesn't go down as
you increase in level.
Clubs: Damage done to monster by "blunt" weapons. Axes, Clubs,
Maces and even and Fists/Knuckles fall under this
category. Basically if you're not using a traditional
Sword or Spear your weapon falls within the Club category.
Spears: Damage done to monster by spears.
Swords: Damage done to monster by swords; this includes Great
Swords.
Fire: Damage done to monster by fire-based attacks.
Water: Damage done to monster by water-based attacks.
Lightning: Damage done to monster by lightning-based attacks.
Dark: Damage done to monster by dark-based attacks.
Holy: Damage done to monster by holy-based attacks.
Poison: Damage done to monster by poison-based attacks.
Curse: Damage done to monster by curse-based attacks.
Earth: Damage done to monster by earth-based attacks.
Soul Type: Type of soul that the monster has.
Soul Drop Rate: Percentage that the monster will drop its soul when killed.
Soul Description: What the soul does when used or equipped.
Max Level: Maximum level that the soul can reach.
Souls For Max: Number of souls needed to max out the soul's ability. Note
that the case where this can be confusing is where a soul
has three levels. Though you can get the soul to Level 3 by
collecting seven souls, you'll need nine to get the most out
of what you have. For the other level quotas you'll see a
direct soul-acquisition-to-level-up ratio.
MP Use: MP used when the soul is used.
Rarity: Rarity of soul. More stars means the soul is more rare.
With soul drop rates now in the guide, you'll see for
yourself just how rare some of these souls are. It's almost
a necessary prerequisite to boost your Luck stat as high as
possible before hunting for some of these things.
Synthesis: Notes whether or not the monster's soul is involved in
Synthesis. In these cases you may want to consider stocking
up on the soul.
Normal Item: Normal item that the monster drops. [Percentage]
Rare Item: Rare item that the monster drops. Boost your luck hardcore
if you're looking for a complete Enemy menu, then let 'er
rip. [Percentage]
Location: Area where enemy can be found. Though I'll only list one
location for the most part, many enemies spawn in multiple
spots.
Note: For some enemies, I will throw in an extra note or two not
listed by the game. Killing tips are also listed under Note
for some of the harder enemies.
For the damage readings you'll see in this guide, everything either does 50%,
100% or 150% damage. There are very few if any enemies who stray from this,
though you'll know one when you come across it.
Quick note about the souls. There are four types: Bullet, Guardian, Enchant,
and Ability. They're all color-coded as well: bullet is red, Guardian is
blue, Enchant is yellow, and Ability is white. You'll also notice that there
are five different soul levels: 1, 2, 3, 5, and 9. As for controls, Bullet
souls are used by pressing Up and Y at the same time, Guardian souls by
pressing R, Enchant by simply equipping (though a minor task may be required
here and there), and Ability souls are innate though they can be turned off
in the start menu if you so desire.
The reason I'm bringing this up is because who in the hell knows what
Lv .4/9 12/USE means without a little help? :)
Lv .X/Y is covered under the Max Level and Soul For Max sections where
X is the Max Level and Y is the Soul For Max. All this means is that some
souls require more souls for their levels to max out.
For the most part, there are only two methods with which to use souls: USE
and TIME. USE is a one-time use in which you use the soul and use a set
amount of MP. TIME souls require a prerequisite MP amount for the initial
casting, then your MP gradually goes down afterwards.
For example, the Zombie soul's MP will read as 12/USE. This means that you
will use up 12 MP per use. For the Bat soul, you'll see 3/TIME. This means
that when you initially use the Bat soul you'll consume 3 MP, then your MP
will gradually drop to zero unless you "use" the soul again the stop the
effects of it. On top of this, you'll see the occasional soul that requires
another use, such as the touch screen or innately. You'll simply see N/A in
these cases.
One last note, which is about Rarity. Though the game only has four different
rarity levels, there are far more than four drop rates. As for the enemies
with no stars next to their Rarity, this means 100% soul drop rates. It also
means that you're likely reading up on a boss.

Location: Demon Guest House. I know some exist in the Lost Village,
but read on.
Note: Don't bother trying to get this thing's soul when you first
see it. The drop rate is horrible, and you'll want to hunt
for him after boosting your Luck stat through the roof and
acquiring a Soul Eater Ring. The Peeping Eye is one of the
most difficult and annoying souls to get in the entire game,
and also one of the last acquired for many players.
I've gotten a ton of e-mails to update this, so here goes.
In the Demon Guest House, there's a room with a Peeping Eye
and a hole in the ceiling. Go here once you have the high
jump, then go into the room above this. Jump down using the
kick attack, then high jump back up after bouncing off of
the Peeping Eye's... eye. Rinse and repeat until you get the
soul, but don't space out and jump back up by accident if
the soul pops out.

Note: This soul isn't a traditional TIME soul. Whenever you use
the soul, you'll use 20 MP. The catch is that the longer you
hold down R, the more MP you'll use and the stronger the
attack will be. If you can buy enough time to charge, this
soul's attack is one of the deadliest spells in the entire
game. The catch is actually finding the time to charge it up
that high, so it's better used against the large slow
enemies, like Golems and The Creature.

Note: This isn't related to the game at all, but I dare any fan of
Katamari Damacy to roll a snowball without fantasizing about
it getting big enough to pick up buildings. You know you
wish it were possible <_<
Oh yes, and the Yeti is also one of three hidden monsters in
the game. After acquiring the Waiter Skeleton soul, return
to the very first area of the castle and use the soul. The
Yeti will appear to gorge on the food you presented, and you
can kill him and hunt for his soul from there as you see
fit. The Yeti's soul isn't very rare, so it shouldn't take
very long. If you're wondering how you'll know whether or not
you're in the right place, you'll see the Yeti walking around
in the snowy trees not too far off in the background.
As a quick final note, the Yeti will jump into the background
if you're not quick enough in killing him. Your best bet is
to use the Waiter Skeleton soul, then Doppleganger over to an
equipment set that has both boosted Luck and a powerful
weapon. I got his soul by hitting him with the Guillotiner
soul and the Bhuj (and axe weapon) at the same time.
I also recently received an e-mail from a nice fellow named
Ecks. Apparently, you can use Catoblepas to turn the Yeti
into stone and then take plenty of time to hack away at him.
Good stuff. I've gotten other e-mails about the Yeti, but the
stone strategy is the best one to use. Unless you feel like
leveling the Waiter Skeleton soul to max, which will cause
the Yeti to kill itself.

Note: The Souls For Max for the Ghost Dancer is nine, so stock up
as soon as you first reach the area. This will add 18 points
to your LUCK stat, and when combined with the Three 7s armor
will make a huge difference in hunting for most of the game.
It'll take awhile to get nine of these things, your defense
will be lacking and you'll be forsaking all of the other
stat-boosting Enchant souls, but it will be worth it if
you're the type of player who wants to collect everything.
And given that this is the type of player who usually reads
these types of FAQs, I'm betting most of you want to hoard
these little bitches the second you see them.
Here's some advice to make it easier. The room that houses
all of the Ghost Dancers looks as follows:
~~XXXX
~~XXXX
WWXXXX~~
XXXX
~~XXXX
X is for the actual room, W is for the Warp Room and ~ is for
an entrance or exit to the room. To make hunting for Ghost
Dancers very simple, park yourself at the entrance one floor
above the Warp Room. There will be a giant candle there,
which will always drop a heart. Equip the Mollusca soul and
go nuts. Enter the room, unleash your Mollusca, then grab the
heart before leaving and doing it again. It only costs 10 MP
to use Mollusca, so you can do this indefinitely until you
have your nine souls and your 18 LUCK points. To make it even
faster, don't grab the heart until you're down to around half
of your MP. The Mollusca soul uses so few MP that you'll be
able to cancel out the MP use, though the risk in parking
yourself right at the entrance is having your muscle memory
cause you to leave the room before you actually collect the
soul once in awhile. This would suck to say the least, so be
conscious of what you're doing.
You should be able to get your nine souls in around an hour
or less. An hour sounds like a long time, but to a hardcore
gamer it's nothing. Go for it. The reward is a much easier
time hunting souls and items down for a very, very long time.

Note: If you're going to use the Succubus Glitch to get your
percentage over 100%, take note that you run the risk of
some very nasty after-effects that you might not be able
to get rid of without resetting the game. No one has yet
reported something as bad as an entire save file being
erased, but it's not something I'd recommend using.
For those of you willing to tempt fate or for those who
simply don't know what the glitch is, it's listed under
the Cheats and Secrets section for the game on GameFAQs.
To directly quote from the page itself:
"Get up close to a wall. Activate the Succubus soul. Before
the animation ends, use a dagger special attack. It needs to
be a backstab move. After you do the special, do three normal
attacks with the dagger and then do the special again. You
will be teleported a few squares forward. [sic]"
Credit goes to LinkedDS for the quote.
In English, you're using the Succubus to teleport you along
much farther, even through walls, than the standard weapon
special would call for. Use at your own risk.

Though on a more serious note, this is one of the hardest
souls to get in the entire game. Not only does the damn thing
take forever to kill, the drop is pretty rare and you'll need
a few extras if you're into Synthing. You can speed up the
process by using multi-hit attacks, but you're still in for
a bit of work. Have fun! <3
I've gotten a ton of e-mail about the Iron Golem loaded with
strategies, but the best one comes from a guy by the name of
Beast404. Use the Luck setup, but equip the Terror Bear
instead of the Joyeuse. Get behind the Iron Golem, use the
Imp Soul (causes an enemy to die when it runs out of MP as
opposed to HP), then swing the Terror Bear like mad. Iron
Golem dies. Quickly.
Of course, you need to access Boss Rush to get the Terror
Bear. And the Nunchaku, if you want to go that route.

Note: There are two possible battles against Dario, and from what
I can gather the two forms are identical. With that said, the
second battle gives you the worst ending in the game if you
bother going through with it. The "correct" route is not to
fight Dario again, but to fight Paranoia.
With that said, kill Dario twice anyway to watch the ending,
then reset the game and continue as you were. SOTN players
might remember a similar issue with one Richter Belmont.

" 'Where do you get the Paranoia soul?'
The boss, Paranoia, is located in the upper-left part of the
Demon Guest house. You will reach a hall with brown/pink
blocks blocking the way. Break them using Axe Armor, Killer
Clown, and Ukoback in succession. Then you'll reach a boss

+ III. Synthesis +
++++++++++++++++++
Aside from the collector in you, one of the big reasons you're out collecting
all of these souls is to upgrade your weapons practically for free. As you
probably know, Synthesis is done in Yoko's shop in The Lost Village and is a
very simple process. All you need is a weapon that is able to be upgraded and
the necessary soul to do so. And for a process so simple, it was worth adding
a few flow charts to this guide as well as to give Synthesis notes within the
Bestiary itself. Synthing is fun, but it's even faster if you know ahead of
time which monsters you should stock up on.
As for the weapons you'll need, you can get every weapon from every weapon type
simply by getting the starter weapons. The starter weapons are all available in
Hammer's shop, and for the most part they're all cheap. The one issue comes in
the form of the Rapier synth tree. Rapiers themselves aren't able to be
upgraded, and you'll have to buy the more expensive Main Gauche to begin the
Rapier tree. Short Swords and Istocs also work, but they're more expensive than
the Main Gauche.
Lastly, for whatever reason you cannot upgrade Knives.
o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------0
| Swords |
o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o
Swords are unique in that they're the only weapon whose synth tree has multiple
paths. But it's nothing to be overly worried about, as it all comes together at
the end.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
+ IV. Soul Eater Ring and Luck +
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
This is a small section intended to be nothing more than a blurb, but it's
worth noting regardless.
First of all, around halfway through the game you'll notice that Hammer will
begin selling a super-expensive item called the Soul Eater Ring. You'll want
to get this as quickly as possible, because not only does it double your
soul drop rate on each monster, it stacks with the Luck bonus.
But you have to get $300,000 before concerning yourself with this. The fastest
way is by abusing Synthesis, and you'll want to do this by going with
easy-to-catch (see also: NOT RARE) souls so as to make the process not become
a pain in the ass. You'll also want a very specific equipment setup:
Weapon: Joyeuse (+5 to Luck)
Armor: Three 7s (+7 to Luck)
Accessory: Lucky Charm (+1 to Luck; equip the Rare Ring for a +5 Luck bonus if
you used the Aria of Sorrow trick)
The souls don't matter too much, though you'll want to have 9 Ghost Dancer
souls (+18 to Luck) equipped while soul hunting. As for getting the Joyeuse,
all of the necessary monsters are available fairly early in the game and are
all easy to hunt down.
While anyone can look at the tables above and choose their favorite
money exploitation trick, most of the tables either deal with annoying Synth
trees or rare, hard-to-kill enemies before you get too far into the
Synth tree for each respective weapon class. Because of this the most obvious
trick is to buy 9 of each cheap starter weapon from Hammer before hacking
away for your necessary soul of choice.
If you go with this route, the best thing to do is to buy 9 Claymores, 9 Axes
and 9 sets of Brass Knuckles. Not too far away from Hammer's shop is an area
with two Wargs, two Axe Armors and infinitely respawning Zombies. Hack away,
upgrade your weapons, then sell off all of the upgrades for a nice chunk of
cash. However, you'll need to repeat this process a few times to get the Soul
Eater Ring quota.
My favorite money-making method involves the sword tree, because you can sell
a Joyeuse for a whopping 25000 bucks without having to hunt down any
difficult enemies. No other tree can claim such a large profit with such
speed, so get to it. Buy yourself 9 Short Swords, then go and get 9 Armor
Knight souls (found in The Lost Village), 9 Corpseweed souls (Garden of
Madness), 9 Great Armor souls (Dark Chapel), 9 Molluscas (Garden of Madness)
and 9 Killer Clowns (Demon Guest House); Synth it all into 9 Joyeuses and
sell them all off for $225,000, minus what you payed for the 9 Short Swords.
You only need to do this twice at the most.
Now once you have your Soul Eater Ring you'll not only double the drop rate
of every monster (those of you who remember the older versions of this guide
know that the original drop rates were all based on the SER bonus due to me
being an idiot and not testing the numbers first), but the SER bonus stacks
with the Luck bonus. The Soul Eater Ring also grants a +5 Luck bonus, so not
only are you doubling all of your drop rates for monsters, but you'll add to
your already-crazy Luck stat and should have an easy time hunting items should
you bother going after them all.
For those among you who are a fan of hard numbers, here is the equation that
determines your drop rate with the Luck stat factored in:
{100[(Drop Rate in Decimal Form)*12]} / [4096 -(LCK/2)]
So assuming a Luck stat of 36 (around what Luck is at level 60 or so), we can
easily use this equation to see how our Luck affects the soul drop rate of the
Zombie, which is 10% normally:
{100[(.1)*12]} / [4096 - (36/2)]
This yields an answer of 0.0294, or 2.94%. This takes that drop rate of 10% and
turns it into a drop rate of 12.94%. Not bad.
Now just for sake of argument, let's place a maximum Luck stat (99) into the
equation:
{100[(.1)*12]} / [4096 - (99/2)]
This yields a result of 0.0297, or 2.97%. All that work you're putting into
that extra Luck doesn't seem so great now, does it? My guess is that either
Konami isn't telling us something or that that 4096 value is far too high.
Regardless, it's the best we have.
By the way, the Soul Eater Ring takes the final result and doubles it.
For the curious bunch among you who remember the original soul drop rates being
double what they should have been and wonder whether or not items are also
affected, item drop rates ARE correct. I've tested this by killing 1,000
Zombies with no Luck-boosters equipped, so I'm assuming that DJ's numbers
aren't off with the listed item drops.
Happy hunting! <3

CJayC: He is one man, and happens to maintain the best site on the internet.
There is no way in hell that this is an easy task, especially with the
fact that GameFAQs is growing at an exponential rate. I can't thank him
enough for all of the hard work.
One of these days I'll think up a less generic message for someone as
awesome as Ceej is, but that would also require me not being lazy.
Sailor Bacon: Sailor might not have the "OMG IT'S SAILOR" factor working for
him like CJayC does, but he means almost as much to GameFAQs.
Since his recent promotion to Administrator, Sailor has been
nothing but hard-working and helpful, and the Contributor
Central queue constantly being given maintenance reflects this.
His hard work has not gone unnoticed or unthanked, at least not
by this author. Thanks!
Konami: For making the game, maybe? =p
Board 8: You guys are a bunch of lunatics, but I don't know what I'd ever do
without you <3
Lucid Faia: For being better than you at everything he does.
Tanya: For being nice enough to marry me. Or maybe it was stupidity on her
part.
Jay: Thanks for being my best man. It meant a ton to me.
Double Jump Books: The one thing my file was missing on the monsters were the
HP values, MP values and soul/item drop rates on each,
simply because the game doesn't list them. Credit goes to
the boys over there for the numbers, though if any are wrong
don't blame me.
On a side note, thanks to DJ for getting into the business
of writing strategy guides. Gaming desperately needed a new
face in this area, and the great thing about DJ's guides are
that while they're written well, the authors write in the
same way that they speak. I like that.
LinkedDS: His submission for the Succubus Glitch in the Codes and Secrets
section for this game on GameFAQs allowed me to explain what it was.
ViewtifulJoe33: Not only did his sticky topic over on the DoS board kick ass,
but it explained how to find Paranoia in better words than I
could ever come up with.
Luigiboy2: Corrected the notes in the Skeleton Ape and Skelerang sections.
Phediuk: Corrected the Bone Ark section and submitted an alternate way to get
through the spiked hall in the Subterranean Hell.
neon screen: Helped take Konami's original equation and make it easier to
understand.
Ecks: Submitted the Catoblepas Yeti strategy.
Dara Browne: Corrected several errors.
And you, the Users.

If you wish to e-mail me, my address is <

like it says at the very beginning of the document. Feel free to contact me
with anything relevant. Furthermore, you can always catch me hanging around
one of the following places on www.gamefaqs.com:
The SCC Board -

The SC Board -

SC stands for Summer Contest, by the way. I have wasted more time on that
board than on any other, so if you're randomly trying to catch me on GameFAQs,
that's your best bet. It's a social board with no topicality, so you can try
reaching me however you choose. If I'm not there, however, post something on
the SCC board. It's a guarantee that I'll see you sooner or later.
