FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
==========================

Why "Psycho Sword" and "Phoenix Arrow"?
>In ATHENA, Athena's main weapon was a sword that could launch
fireballs. And in Psycho Soldier, Athena could turn into a Phoenix
that shoots fire arrows from her mouth (and Kensou could turn into a
chinese dragon - another clue to the Dragon Spirit mistery).

Who are those girls with Athena, anyways?
>One of them seems to be Rika, from the PSX game 'Athena: Awakening
from ordinary Life' (check the list above). But I don't have a clue
on the other girl.

Why is the Psychic 9 called Psychic 9?
>Because Athena swaps into 9 of her past forms:
1- KoF2001
2- KoF2000
3- KoF99
4- KoF98
5- KoF97
6- KoF96
7- KoF95
8- KoF94
9- Psycho Soldier / ATHENA (you can choose)
Note that KoF2002 isn't included in the move. When Athena runs at the
opponent, she's already in KoF2001 form.

Where are the Psychic 9 end clothes from?
>1- The school uniform is from Psycho Soldier.
2- The red skirt that looks like a bikini is from ATHENA (it happens
that Athena loses her regular clothes in the beggining of the first
stage in the Arcade version... too bad NES version doesn't show it)
3- The armour is also from ATHENA. In that game, you can wear armour
parts that you find. In this end, you see Athena with an almost
complete armour, only missing a helmet.

How is Psycho Soldier and Athena's moves spelled in Japanese?
>Psycho Soldier     = Saiko Sorujaa
Psycho Ball Attack = Saikoboru Atakku
Psycho Sword       = Saikosodo

Did anyone ever asked any of these questions?
>Not really, maybe because I tell everyone before they ask me. ^^

===============
WHAT'S CHANGED?
===============

- Most characters had their standing stance changed in KoF2002, some
for better and others for worst. Since Athena must have a cloth
change every year, not only her standing stance was changed, but most
of her other animations changed as well.

- Athena's taunt was changed. Now, instead of tripping in the ground
saying "Ittai" ("Ouch"), she says "Sa, Gomenasai" ("Oh, I'm sorry").

- Athena's HP Psycho Ball Attack animation was changed, and the HP
Psycho Ball is a little faster (in fact, most of the projectiles in
 KoF2002 are faster)

- Teleport has lower start and recovery times.

- Phoenix Fang Arrow has no recovery time!!!

- Nu Psycho Reflector is gone. But she still has the original Psycho
 Reflector...

- Athena's low HK animation changed again, and it seems to have a
longer range now (but I'm not sure if it really does).

- Athena's "Naice faitou" ("Nice fight") speech changed to "Gudo
faitou" ("Good fight"). The win pose is still the same.

- The "Yatta, gu" ("I did it, good") win pose was replaced by the old
"I can't lose" pose, but with a new speech.

- Lost her "Shotime" speech while starting the Psychic 9.

 -------------------------------------------------------------------

Special Attacks
---------------

 -------------------------------------------------------------------
- qcb + X or Y                  Psycho Ball Attack
>Athena's projectile attack. HP version is faster, and LP is
smoother. Both versions inflict the same damage.
 -------------------------------------------------------------------

 -------------------------------------------------------------------
- (air) f, d, df + X or Y       Psycho Sword
>Anti-air attack. Just let the sword hit the enemy. It's a good
attack for a combo, and can be done in mid-air.
 -------------------------------------------------------------------

 -------------------------------------------------------------------
- (mid air) qcb + A or B        Phoenix Arrow
>Diagonally falls towards the enemy. HK version goes further and
Athena does a low kick after it.
 -------------------------------------------------------------------

 -------------------------------------------------------------------
- qcf + A or B                  Teleport

>Can pass trought the opponent. HK version goes further. Note that
the opponent can hit both the teleporting Athena as well as the
hologram left in where she was before the teleport and cancel the
 move.
 -------------------------------------------------------------------

 -------------------------------------------------------------------
- qcb + A                        Psycho Reflector

>Besides the final boss Rugal, Athena is the only character able to
reflect projectiles exactly as they were when thrown towards her in
 KoF2002.
 -------------------------------------------------------------------

Desperation Moves (DMs)
-----------------------

*These moves need at least one stock in your power bar.
*They don't need you to activate MAX Mode, but, if you do so, then they
will >NOT< take another stock from your power bar :)

 -------------------------------------------------------------------
- (air) hcb, hcb + X or Y        Shining Crystal Bit (SCB)

>Two spheres start to spin arround Athena. Just like in the game
Psycho Soldier, those spheres keep Athena safe from projectiles and
do damage to opponents who touch them.
Note: In while you should always use a Crystal Shoot if you want
to stop this move, you can also hold A, B, X and Y at the same time
 to cancel it.
 -------------------------------------------------------------------

 -------------------------------------------------------------------
- qcb + X or Y from SCB          Crystal Shoot

>This DM doesn't need any power stock. Athena grabs the spheres and
shoots them to the opponent. In LP version of the attack she shoots
it horizontally, in HP version the spheres will curve to hit jumping
 opponents.
 -------------------------------------------------------------------

 -------------------------------------------------------------------
- (mid air) qcf, qcf + A or B    Phoenix Fang Arrow

>A triple Phoenix Arrow that, of course, causes more damage. The move
can be canceled if the opponent hits or grabs the real Athena in
 mid-air.
 -------------------------------------------------------------------

Super Desperation Moves (SDMs)
------------------------------

*For these moves, you need to activate MAX Mode (press R trigger). They
need two stocks in the power bar (one to activate MAX Mode and the
other for the move itself).

 -------------------------------------------------------------------
- (air) hcb, hcb + X+Y           Super Shining Crystal Bit (SSCB)

>Same as Shining Crystal Bit, but causes more damage.
 -------------------------------------------------------------------

 -------------------------------------------------------------------
- qcb + X or Y from SSCB         Super Crystal Shoot

>Same as Crystal Shoot, but hits trice.
 -------------------------------------------------------------------

 -------------------------------------------------------------------
- hcb, f + X + Y                     Psychic 9

>Athena circles throught all her 8 forms in the past KoF games. The
9th form is from a 80's game. IMPORTANT: After the two first hits
 (in 2001 style), you must press X, A, Y, X, A, Y, B in this order
to keep Athena's clothing change, or else she won't complete the
move. And after pressing B button, you must do one of these
 commands:
 - qcf + Y         (Psycho Soldier School Uniform)
 - f, d, df + Y    (ATHENA clothes)
 - qcb + B         (ATHENA Armour)
 -------------------------------------------------------------------

Note: There's NO Super Phoenix Fang Arrow in KoF2002! Athena doesn't
     have it anymore since KoF2000.

Hidden Super Desperation Move (HSDM)
------------------------------------

*For this move, you must be in MAX Mode and have about 1/4 or less of
your life left! To know how much you must have exactly, go to Training
Mode and set "Life" to RED.
*You'll need two power stocks to execute this move (one to activate MAX
Mode and the other for the move itself).

 -------------------------------------------------------------------
- qcf + A+B+X+Y                  Psychic Melee

>A Super version of the Psychic 9. IMPORTANT: After the two first
 hits (in 2001 style), you must press B, Y, A, B, Y, A, X in this
order. Note that this is the exact opposite of Psychic 9!! After
pressing X button, you must input one of these two commands:
 - qcf + A+Y (Fans Ahoy)
 - qcf + A+X (Athena Goddess)
Athena will then do the three ends of Psychic 9, but what she will
do after that depends on which button you pressed with the A button.
"Fans Ahoy" will attack hard the opponent, and "Athena Goddess"
will heal some of your life bar.

If you have troubles pressing A+Y in the Dreamcast joystick, you can
 also:
 - press R trigger, if you didn't change it in the Key Config.
 - press A+Y+B - it works too! ^^

If you ask how much "Athena Goddess" heal, the life bar will almost
touch the last letter in Athena's name. Practice mode doesn't show
 that.
 -------------------------------------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

================
CANCELABLE MOVES
================

One of the new features this year is the Super Cancels. When in MAX
Mode, you can cancel a Super Mode into another. Eg: You're doing the
Phoenix arrow and when Athena is almost doing the last kick you can
cancel it into a Psycho Sword, and it'll still connect! There are also
the simple Cancels, that don't need MAX mode to happen.

===Simple Cancelable Moves===

- Renkantai > Phoenix Arrow
o If the two hits of Renkantai hit, you can do a Phoenix arrow.

- Renkantai > Psycho Sword
o Or a Psycho Sword, if you want more hits!

===Super Cancelable Moves===

When a Super Cancel occurs, your character flashes white for a second.
Be aware that usage of these consomes some of the time bar that
appear when you activate MAX Mode.

Here are Athena's cancelable moves (at least those I've found so far):

- Phoenix Arrow > Psycho Sword (ground)
o Do the Pboenix arrow and once Athena hits the ground do the
Psycho Sword command. It always works if the opponent is against a
   wall.

- Full Phoenix Arrow (strong version only) > Psycho Sword (ground)
o This is just like the above one, but you need to do the Psycho
Sword while Athena's doing the crouch kick.

- Phoenix Arrow > Psycho Sword (air)
o You can also cancel a Phoenix Arrow into a Psycho Sword BEFORE
   Athena hits the ground.

- Psycho Sword (ground) > Psycho Sword (air)
o Do the Psycho Sword on the ground, then do it again in the air.
Just don't take too much time to do the second Psycho Sword, or
else it won't connect. The right time to do it is before Athena
fully pronounces the "Saiko" from Saiko Sodo (Psycho Sword).

---THE ULTIMATE CANCEL MOVE---

- Renkantai > Phoenix Arrow (strong version) > Psycho Sword (ground) >
 Psycho Sword (air)
o After doing the Renkantai, do a Phoenix Arrow, then a Psycho
Sword, and then do another Psycho Sword! You can take about 10~11
hits from this move if done with the opponent against the wall.

ATHENA'S COLORS
===============

Every KoF2002 character has 4 different colors. To select different
colors, just select your character with different buttons at the
Character Select screen.

Here is which color each button will return for Athena:

A - Red (default)
B - Blue (Kensou's color)
X - Light Green (a little lighter than Chin's)
Y - Pink (a little darker than Bao's second color in KoF99-2001)

Translation Notes
- In Psychic 9 / Melee, Athena counts up to 8 in Chinese language.
Thanks to Incesto for the info and Dinghydoggy for the list (both
 from GameFAQs KoF2002 Message Board).
- Shi Kensu is the Japanese pronounce of Sie Kensou's name.
- "Nikuman" is the meat bun that Kensou eats before every match.
- In KoF2000, Kensou told Athena about his feeling for her. Since then,
Athena tries to change the subject whenever she meets him. This year
she even ate his favorite food to avoid having to give him an answer!

Japanese Notes
- Hiragana: Used for Japanese words.
- Romaji:   Used for foreing words. Usually, those words are in English
with Japanese ascent (eg: "Hiringu" which is actually
           "Healing").

Still have to confirm:
- MAX Activation
- HSDM Psychic Melee, Fans Ahoy end

Still have to translate:
- Phoenix Bomb move
- HSDM Psychic Melee, Fans Ahoy end
- Win Pose 2

=======
ENDINGS
=======

This game has no individual endings for each team. Instead, you see
some random comic scenes with the KoF characters.

I saw three comic scenes where Athena and Kensou appear:

1- Kensou is looking at Athena. She changes into the three ends of
Psychic 9, then she turns into Chang with his/her finger in the
  nose. Kensou gets desperate.

2- Kensou is looking at Athena. She changes into the three ends of
Psychic 9, then she turns into Vanessa. Once she does that, Ramon
comes running, kicks Kensou out of the way and gives Athena/Vanessa
  a red rose.

3- Clark Steele is trying to flert with Athena. Then, he grabs her and
goes away with her. Then, Kensou appears with a mad face, running
  after Clark.
