Hi, and welcome to my DC KoF '01 Puzzle FAQ. This guide offers a brief
explanation of how Puzzle Mode works, and includes a list of unlockable
secrets. I've also included a brief list of unlockable secrets at the

Puzzle Mode is a neat little puzzle game that can be unlocked once you
clear Single Play mode. It's comparable to Puzzle Fighter II. Since
all the information in the game itself is in Japanese, I've written up
a brief FAQ to explain how the game works.
You start off by picking your character, then you compete against other
challengers, including the bosses (Zero and Igniz). As of this
writing, it doesn't seem possible to use the bosses in Puzzle Mode,
however.
The rules of the game are fairly simple. There are several types of
block patterns. If you get four or more patterns of the same type to
touch each other, they will all be destroyed. Once you make all of
the blocks disappear, you win. If the blocks pile up so high that they
touch or cross the red line near the top of the screen, then you lose.
There are two types of blocks you can manipulate. The more common one
is the four-part block. Rarely, you will get a two-part block. You
can press up or down to move your current block up or down along the
playing field. Press the L or R trigger buttons to rotate the block,
and press A to drop it. You cannot move a block once it is falling.
As you destroy blocks, you will gain Power Gauge energy. Once you
gain enough energy, it will change from yellow to green (to signify
that you have earned one level of Power Gauge energy). You can hold
up to six levels at a time, and levels cannot be carried over between
rounds.
If you have at least one level in your Power Gauge, you can press X or Y
for a special move. If you have at least three levels stored, you can
press X + Y for a SDM move.
The functions of each person's special move varies from player to
player. They are explained in the next section.

- To unlock Puzzle Mode's Gallery, beat Puzzle Mode.
- To unlock Zero, get to Zero in Survival Mode.
- To unlock Ignis, beat him in Survival Mode.
- To unlock the Gallery pictures, beat Team Mode with the
corresponding team.
- To unlock Page 4 of the Gallery pictures, beat Team Mode with
every team.
You can only use Zero and Ignis in Practice, Survival, and Vs. modes.
To select them, go to the Random Select square and press right once
or twice.
Those of you who own 2000 may already be familiar with this, but if
you aren't, you can select stages from previous KOF games from the
Practice Mode menu. They don't have all of the stages in there, but
a good sampling of stages from each KOF (94 through 00) are included.
