Shining Force is not a game where the player would ever get stuck, thus, the
need for a full walkthrough is un-necessary. Instead, there are a ton of
hidden characters and items that must be acquired at specific times, else you
will never get them. Many of the optional characters are unique character
classes with unique moves and spells, so you really want to get them all to
fully enjoy the game.
My intention for this list is to allow the player to gain all the optional
characters and find all of the hidden items on their first time playing the
game without having to read a FAQ which ruins the story. The only other
things that you need to know are:
1) To gain the strongest possible characters, do not promote your characters
until they reach Lv. 20.
2) All of the visible chests seen during battles should be opened before the
battle ends by a person who has a free slot in their inventory.
3) All of the strongest weapons that can be purchased, can be purchased at the
last town.
To use this FAQ without spoiling the game, simply read the next item or person.
There is no reason to read the item or person after that since they all go in
order. Characters are listed as (number) and items as [letter]. Enjoy!

(Battle 9 - Quarry Battle)
[A] Sugoi Mizugi (Awesome Swimsuit)
After winning the Bustoke Quarry battle, enter the cave in the southwest
of the battle field where the Moon Stone treasure chest is. Get the Moon
Stone from the chest. Then go to the southwest corner of the cave and search
south. A hidden chest will appear containing this item. Put it in Tao's
inventory and she will wear it in battle. It will change the appearance
of her icon on the battle screen, but otherwise have no effect.
OPTIONALLY JOINs
(10) ZYLO : Get Moon Stone in the Bustoke Quarry battle. Have the alchemist
in Bustoke convert it to Lunar Dew. Give the Lunar Dew to Zylo
in the Bustoke prison and he JOINs.
MUST DO THIS TO GET (13)
After you beat the Quarry Battle in Bustoke, explore the houses. One of the
houses will have a guy trying to make a device to fly. Search the engine
that he is working on and he'll ask you to follow him. Do so and the man will
test the flying device and crash.
(Battle 10)
(Battle 11 - The Laser Eye)
[B] Kitui Huku (Daring Dress)
Unlike the previous item, which you got after the battle was over, this item
you'll need to get while Battle 11 is still going on. If you are in the
correct place, your character's Stay command icon will change to Search.
Search the square to the left of where the farthest left Dark Elf starts and
a hidden chest will appear containing this item. You'll need to be facing
the square from any direction, not standing on it. Put the item in Anri's
inventory and she will wear it in battle. It will change the appearance of
her icon on the battle screen, but otherwise have no effect.
ALWAYS JOINs
(11) PELE : As the Battle 11 ends he automatically JOINs just before the
chapter ends.
OPTIONALLY JOINs
(12) JOGURT : You can now run into him when you first get to Pao. Stand to
the left of the priest (or just try to read the books in the
bookshelf) and he'll appear just outside of the back left of
the chapel laying on a blue blanket; you'll see Jogurt sit up,
squeak and then sit down. He will now be in headquarters.
Note: Every time he defeats someone he will be given an item.
Give this item to another character to see what it does.

In Pao, talk to a man and he will mention VANKAR.
MIGHT NEED TO DO THIS TO GET (17)
In Pao, talk to EARNEST.
OPTIONALLY JOINs
(13) KOKICHI : After the wagons of Pao city move, Kokichi will fly down and
crash near you at the site where the city used to be. He’ll
then automatically JOIN your party.
OPTIONALLY JOINs
(14) VANKAR : He's left outside Pao after the wagons of Pao city move.
Talk to him and he JOINs.
(Battle 12 - General Elliot)
OPTIONALLY JOINs
(15) DOMINGO : In Pao's 2nd location, there is a man with an egg hatching
device. Allow him to use your Domingo egg. DOMINGO will hatch
and JOIN your party.
OPTIONALLY JOINs
(16) GUNTZ : He's in the sheep pen in Pao's 2nd location. Talk to him and
he’ll JOIN your party.
MIGHT NEED TO DO THIS TO GET (17)
In Pao, talk to a man and he will mention EARNEST.
(Battle 13 - Balbazak's Fortress)
[C] Kenji (Public Prosecutor)
This item is gained exactly the same as item [B]. In battle 13, it is hidden
outside the fortress in the bottom bush of the 3 lone bushes that are arranged
in a column between two walls of the fortress. Unfortunately, no one has
found a use for this item.
OPTIONALLY JOINs
(17) EARNEST : In a basement in Uranbatol, talk to him and he JOINs your party.
[D] Teppou (Rifle)
Like items B & C, you must get this item DURING BATTLE 17. It is located
exactly 3 squares to the right of the farthest bottom center square. Yes,
that means it is actually located on the railing of the ship. Again, like
item C, it has no known use.
OPTIONALLY JOINs
(18) LYLE : In Rudo, he is on the roof of the only tower in town.
Talk to him and he JOINs your party.
(Battle 18 - To Dragonia)
ALWAYS JOINs
(19) BLEU : You must talk to Blue twice in Dragonia to advance the story.
The second time, he JOINs your party.
(Battle 19 - Kane in Dragonia City)
[E] Youji (Infant/Baby/Child)
Note: The picture of this item doesn't clarify which of these it is.
Like items B, C & D, you must get this item DURING BATTLE 19. It is located
at the top of the playfield, between Bleu's house and the Dragon Shine.
There are two rocks next to each other to the left the flowers. It is on
the right rock. Like item D, it has no known use.
OPTIONALLY JOINs
(20) MUSASHI : You get him in Prompt. The trick here is that you need to
search a certain place AFTER you talk to the king AFTER the king
throws you in jail for talking to him in the first place. If
you search before this, you will get the typical "Nothing is
unusual." message. The particular place you need to search is a
small white sign on the wall below the "Tales of Really Long
Ago" bookshelf. When you do this, he JOINs your party.
(Battle 22 - To the Tower of the Ancients)
(Battle 23 - Tower of the Ancients)
ALWAYS JOINs
(21) ALEF : After the Tower of the Ancients battle, ALEF and TORASU will be
(22) TORASU : inside the tower, exhausted, and will JOIN your party
automatically when you leave.
MIGHT NEED TO DO THIS TO GET (22)
At the Shining Path, Speak to the robot before you use the Orb of light at
for the 2nd time.
(Battle 24 - Chaos)
ALWAYS JOINs?
(22) ADAM : Egress from the battle, and he will automatically be in your
party.
OPTIONALLY JOINs
(23) HANZO(U): You get him in Runefaust. Unlike Musashi, you don't have to do
anything in town before you can get him. But, like Musashi, you
need to search a particular spot to find him. The spot is
unique, it doesn't look like any other spot in town. Simply
search the unique looking bush near the entrance of town. When
you do this, he JOINs your party. In the text, when he first
joins, his name is Hanzo, but in your party his name is Hanzou.
(Battle 26 - Castle)
(Battle 27 - Castle w/ Robots)
(Battle 28 - Colossus)
[F] Kaku- chan (Papa Doll)
You must get this item DURING BATTLE 28.
It is located at the top of the playfield. It is hidden on the gold wall with
the eye symbols on the left side of the playfield. Search in the right corner
of the wall. Like items B, C, D, & E, it has no known use.
[G] Kindan No Hako (Forbidden Box)
This item exists in the ROM, but it cannot be found in the game. You would
need to use a hex editor to access it. I have never seen it. Unlike most of
the items, people claim that this one does have a use; it allows you to level
up your entire party in a strange manner.
KlD - My wife. She is the one who played through the game again to allow me to
write this FAQ.
I wish give credit to all the other writers of FAQs for this game which can be
found at GameFAQs. I appreciate all the work that they put into their FAQs.
I read them all to make sure I didn't miss anything.
