I do not profess to be fluent in Japanese. I was neither born in Japan nor
have I ever been there. I have had very little formal schooling in
Japanese; what Japanese I do know is a result of intensive self-study over

I've invented?
('Mochi-tsuki' is 'rice cake pounding.' From what I understand, rice cakes
('mochi') are traditionally served during New Year's. The pounding of
steamy, soft rice for making mochi appears to be a group or family affair.
Several people take turns to pound on it with a large hammer-like pestle.)

大神
こ、紅蘭も相変わらずだな……新年そうそう大爆発は勘弁してくれよ！
Ko- Kohran hasn't changed a bit either......Go easy on us with the big
explosions so soon in the new year!

紅蘭
ほー。大神はん、モチの代わりにどつかれたいんかいな。
Hoh. Oogami-han, maybe you'd like to be pounded on in place of the mochi.

('Kenjutsu' (剣術) is of course the 'art of the sword.' 'Kamae' (構え) means
'stance' or 'posture,' as pertains to martial arts.)

さくら
そのためにも……故郷の仙台に、帰省しようと思ってるんです。
For that purpose......I'm thinking of returning to my hometown of Sendai.

全集 Zenshuu - 'Completed works' or 'complete collection.' Thus, 'Meiji
Bungaku Zenshuu' would be 'Completed Works of Meiji Literature.')

由里
米田支配人のはからいで書庫に最新刊があるんだけどあたしにはちょっと無理ね。
We have the newest edition in the files in Manager Yoneda's office, but it
would be a little too difficult for me.
もう、文字は細かいし言葉づかいも難しいし……
The characters are too small and the word usage is too difficult......

かすみ
あら、そう？とても味わい深い作品が多いと思うんだけど。
Oh, really? I think it has many meaningful and deep works in it, though.

やっぱり、あたしにはロイドやキートンの活動写真がお似合いなのよ。

That's right - I suppose you could translate it as 'western tenements' or
something?
一家族が住む部屋がいくつも並んでいてそれが何階もあって……
It's got many rooms for one family to live in next to each other, and then
many floors of those together......
うーん……うまく説明できないわ。
