The heart of MSR's single-player game is the Street Racing mode. It is divided
into 25 chapters, each with 10 events. The central idea in MSR is to earn
Kudos by driving fast, driving well, and driving stylishly. The Kudos you gain
on each event are added into your total, which allows you to progress in the
game. It takes a certain number of Kudos to unlock each event, and a larger
number to unlock the next chapter.
Events come in several types, but each has a specific condition that must be
fulfilled for the the event to be won. Once the event is finished, the Kudos
are awarded. Each event can be tried any number of times, however only the
Kudos earned on the last try count towards your total. You can receive
negative Kudos by failing or giving up during an event, or by winning the event
but driving very poorly.
One new car is unlocked for every chapter in which you complete all the events,
and tracks are available for time trial, quick race, and 2-player when you
complete an event on that track. Other things are earned from special
conditions on some events. Events marked "special" have a Kudos requirement;
if you earn more Kudos than the requirement lists on that event then you will
receive that event's reward. Rewards can be extra garage slots, Jokers, a new
car, a cheat mode, or a new track. Specials may also require that you use a
certain car and/or race at a particular time of day.
Before you use a car in any single-player mode, you must first earn it and put
it in your garage. In order to earn it, you must complete one lap on a certain
course with that car below a certain time. Any unlocked car may be test-driven
or used in the multi-player game.

"It's not how fast you drive, it's how you drive fast."
That's what MSR would have you believe, but actually, both speed and style are
important. Style will earn you Kudos so you can unlock subsequent chapters and
and earn stuff in special events. Speed will help you complete the most
difficult events that have very strict time requirements or especially speedy
opponents. The trick is balancing speed and style. The main way to earn Kudos
is slide, but doint a big power slike around every turn isn't the fastest way
to complete a course. You have to know when you need to shave off a second,
and when you can go for Kudos. I'll divide this section into two parts:
Driving Fast, and Driving Stylish.
Driving Fast
Basically, keep your grip on the road. You can't accelerate if your wheels are
sliding. MSR is a street-racing game, so almost all turns are short and sharp
and require brakes. The idea is to exit the turn with the most speed possible.
It doesn't matter much how fast you move through the turn, which is very
short. What's important is how fast you're moving when you leave the turn
since that determines how fast you'll be going down the much longer
straightaway.
To take a turn fast:
1)Set up a good racing line through the turn. Be on the side of the road
opposite of the corner you'll have to go around. This allows most gentle curve
possible and lets you go around the turn with the most speed possible. You'll
want to temorize the turns so you know what side to line up on. Or just follow
any other cars in your race.
2) Apply brakes before turning. Don't do it after you turn the wheel unless
you have to to avoid hitting the wall. Braking during the turn will make you
slide, which isn't the goal when going for speed.
3) Coast or give a little gas through the turn. Keep your speed about
constant. You want all the force between the tires and the road to go into
turning your car, not accelerating or decelerating.
4) Floor it once you're almost straightened out. If you do it well, you'll go
through the turn slower than a computer-controlled car, but exit the turn going
faster and be able to pass them on the strait-away.
Hairpins
That's the simple version; it's not always that easy. For the really tight
hairpin turns, you will want to slide. It rotates the car faster, and you'll
have to slow down a alot anyway. Brake normally before the turn, then
brake/handbrake and steer, then accelerate to go into the slide. It's best to
slide for the first half of the turn, until your car is even with and
perpendicular to the barrier that marks the inside of the turn. Not a big
slide, because at this point you will want to regain traction by letting off
the gas if necessary. Once you have grip back, accelerate out of the turn.
S-curves
Another common situation is an S-curve, although in this game it is more likely
to be one 90-degree turn followed by another 90-degree corner in the opposite
direction with a short straight in the middle. Here, take the first turn
slower than ususal. Don't worry about exiting with the most speed, instead
worry about getting into position for a good line around the second turn. With
a good line, you'll exit the second turn with the most speed possible, and make
good time down the straight.
Bumping Edges
Hitting the side of the course in MSR isn't as disastrous to your speed as it
is in most other games. You'll make better time if you avoid the edges, and
hitting one will cause a penalty to your Kudos, but it can be helpful in
overtaking other racers. Your opponent will brake before the turn and you can
use this opportunity to overtake him. But you'll be going too fast for the
turn and probably hit an edge and your opponent will then be coming up from
behind. All you have to do is block him from passing. Problem is, it'll let
cars ahead of you get farther ahead, and cars behind you catch up. It's not
the prettiest way to overtake an opponent, but when winning is more important
than Kudos, it's a nice tactic.
Driving Stylishly
In addition to driving fast enough to clear the event's requirements, you have
to look good while doing it in order to earn Kudos.
Don't bang up your ride.
Hitting the sides of the course or other cars subtract Kudos from your total
for that event. The force of the crash affects how many you lose; going
head-on into a wall at 140 mph will knock about 100 Kudos off your score, but
scraping a wall will only remove a few. In collisions with other racers, you
don't lose Kudos if the contact happens on the back third of your car. I guess
it's MSR's way of saying that getting rear-ended isn't your fault. And if you
get through an entire event without getting any penalty, you get a small bonus
of about 25 to 100 Kudos for your perfect driving. I'm not sure what the exact
amount depends on, difficulty of the event, car's CPF, or what.
Sliding
This is how you'll gain most of your Kudos. The bigger and longer the slide,
the more you get. You can actually see the K that appears on your screen go
from transparent to white as you slide gets longer and scores more Kudos.
The easiest way to start a slide is to tap the hand-brake and turn at the same
time. At high speeds, or with a powerful car, the regular brake will work
well, too. Then accelerate to make the rear of your car lose grip and swing
out. With a moderately powerful rear-wheel drive vehicle, this will probably
make you spin out (lots of Kudos as long as you don't hit a wall, but spinning
out won't win any races). Four-wheel drive cars behave similarly, their rear
just won't slide as much and it is easier to get them back under control.
Front-wheel drive cars won't lose grip to their rear wheels by accelerating;
you have to rely on the brake to slide. But they are easiest to get under
control because the power to their front wheels pulls them back into line. To
regain grip, let off of the gas and countersteer so that your car points in the
direction in which it is moving.
Sliding isn't the fastest way to move around the course, so only do it if you
have the opportunity, or if you have to. Coming into a turn too fast? Your
only option is to brake, turn, and slide all at the same time to avoid smashing
up on the wall. Like I said in the "speed" section above, you'll exit the turn
with less speed than if you braked earlier. Gettng some extra rotation at the
beginning of a really tight turn is a good reason to do a controlled slde, too.
One thing to watch out for is that you can't get any Kudos right after you get
a penalty. The red "penalty" message stays on the screen for about 3 seconds,
during this time you can't gain or lose any more Kudos. So go ahead and any
wall or car you need too while you can still see the "penalty". But don't
bother sliding since you can't gain any Kudos either. The same isn't true
while the white "Kudos" message is shown, you can still gain more Kudos or lose
some to a penalty. But if you're heading for a wall, hit the hand brake and
slide to pick up some Kudos before you get the penalty. Rotating so the car's
side hits the wall is usually the best way to make your escape from the wall
after you hit.
The overall idea is to race fast when you have to in order to pass the event.
When you've got a lead or some spare time, that's when you can give up some
speed in order to slide and rack up the Kudos.

33
3333 Courses
33
3333
There are 250 events in the game, so I'm not going to detail a strategy for
each and every one. And there are about 90 different courses, so I won't talk
about all of those separately. However, each course is on the roads of one of
9 locations and is not totally unique. So, instead of learning and memorizing
courses, you should learn the turns. Every course is different from the
others, but includes sections that are in other races. So, certain parts of
each course will be familiar. Here's a quick rundown of the 9 locations and
their special features.
Pacific Heights, San Francisco:
Wide streets, and every corner is is at 90 degrees, making it the simplest
location in the game. It has some steep hills, so make sure you exit the turn
before going up a hill with as much speed as possible, you won't be able to
accelerate much uphill.
Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco:
Similar to Pacific Heights, but it has some added features. There's some
narrow curves and a hairpin down by the coast. Brake before those curves and
coast through them to keep your grip and avoid the wall. The hairpin comes
soon after. Higher on the hill, there is a very narrow alley that makes a 180
dgree turn to an incline. All I can say is take it slow and try to exit with
as much speed as possible, you'll need it to make it up the incline in good
time.
Financial District, San Francisco:
Still has perpendicular streets (but they're narrower and shorter), but there
are some funny angles and highway driving, too. Memorize which turns are not
90 degrees because it can be hard to tell as you approach the turn. If there
are two 90-degree turns in the same direction, try to drive it like a single
big U-turn. Watch your speed on the highway section, and apply plenty of brake
before you have to turn.
Trafalgar, London:
This location is fairly standard for MSR. Basic city driving with a detour
through the square. However, there are a lot of obstacles in this course.
Statues and arches are in the center of the street in some locations, and the
sides of the course are not always straight. And be careful turning as you go
up or down the short flight of steps, you lose grip easily there. Right near
there is a low island running down the middle of a wide street. You can cut
across it for a better line around the nest turn, but the AI cars won't.
St. James' Park, London:
Some races follow the wide highways around the park, letting you get some great
speed, and other races take you through the winding paths of the park itself.
These paths wind just enough that it can be dangerous to drive through at full
speed unless you know what to expect. The Park is also home to some of the
meanest turns in the game where you can exit and enter the park. Take them
slow, learn them, and practice them. Also, note that your grip on the path's
gravel isn't any worse than on asphalt.
Westminster, London:
This is a weird one. It has some very long stretches of gently-curving road
that end in little traffic circles, which can be hard to see at 150 mph. Brake
as soon as you see em (or better yet, before). Otherwise you'll smash into the
wall at 100 mph and be moving slow when the circle opens up into another long
straight. There is also an area of narrow, closely-spaced 90-degree turns.
It's almost impossible to pass or be passed here.
Shibuya, Tokyo:
It's a bit more curvy than the other locations, but there isn't that much
special about Shibuya. It has the most elevation changes outside of Pacific
Heights and Fisherman's Wharf, but that's about it.
Asakusa, Tokyo:
Narrow streets, alleyways, and a drive through a covered market make this the
most claustrophobic course. The exit to that market is the slowest turn in the
game, too. It narrow, 90 degrees, and has a vertical beam blocking the best
line. CPU cars don't have much trouble with it, though. In other variations
of the course, there is a shortcut in that area instead. Upon exiting the
market, you have a choice of going straight and then making a tight 90-degree
right turn, or taking a path between buildings that angles off to the right and
then has a slightly easier turn back onto the main raceway. The shortcut won't
shave off much time, but it's a good way to get in front of opponents and block
them from passing you.
Shinjuku, Tokyo:
This is the most difficult area, but quite a lot of fun once you learn to
recognize the turns. The worst part of it is the islands that run down the
center of many streets. You have to strategically choose right or left based
on the corners at the begining and end of the island. You also have to avoid
smashing into the island's end and coming to a dead stop. There is one long,
wide straight-away, but short green barriers on it force you to zig-zag back
and forth on it. And these barriers are not in the same place on each course.
And don't forget that easy-looking smooth S-turn. It suddenly goes from two
lanes wide to one and the barrier is angled so that hitting it sends you
directly into another barrier and stops you dead. Plus, it is often hard to
look ahead and easily see upcoming turns, so memorizing this area is a must.
444
4 44
44444 Events
44
44
This section will say something about each type of event and how to get the
most Kudos on each one. But first, one note about Skill Kudos.
Skill Kudos come 90% from how you set the requirement for the event, and 10%
from how well you do on the track. If you set the time for 1:20 and finish the
race in 1:19, you'll get a lot more skill Kudos than if you set it for 2:00 and
finished in 1:19. The skill Kudos also depend on your car's CPF (Car
PerFormace rating) and what is expected of that car. That's basically more
Kudos for winning if you use a slower car. The CPF determines the par time on
timed events, and how many skill Kudos you get for places in race events.
Hot Lap (HL)
Hot laps are simply time-trials, but they come in two varieties. In the first
type, you must beat a certain lap-time. You are given several laps to try, but
only your fastest time is counted. In the second type, you must set a certain
average lap-time and every lap is counted towards the average. Hot laps are
typically very easy to pass, since the required time is very high. Even the
beginning cars can win hot laps in the middle chapters without amazing driving.
However, it is usually better to use a more powerful car because they earn
more style Kudos. You can set the required time lower to get some more skill
Kudos. A second or two below your car's par time is good, if you can do it.
It seems like par times on high-CPF cars are harder to accomplish. On hot
laps, you are the only car on the track, so it is your best chance to get some
extra Kudos for "no penalties". But the best way to get Kudos is this trick
(which borders on cheating): On a "Best Lap" hot lap, beat the required time
on the first lap. Then, instead of completing the remaining laps, just drive
around doing big slides and donuts. Find a wide stretch of road, and silde
into U-turns and go back and forth. Just a note, when you're going the wrong
way, you can't gain any Kudos. So, when you're sliding, just turn more than
180 degrees and you sould get the Kudos.
Timed Run (TR)
In the timed run events, you must complete several laps on one or more track
within a given total time. There will be several other cars driving around the
track at low speeds as traffic. These are generally easy, but you can set the
required time below your car's par to get more Kudos. The main challenge is
avoiding the traffic. They drive as if they are in a race except they will not
exceed a certain top speed. The drivers acting as the traffic floor it when
they accelerate, and follow good lines around the turn, so they'll always be
right in your way. Especially avoid hitting them directly from behind:
they'll slam on their brakes to get back down to their top speed, and really
slow you down.
Challenge (CH)
Challenge events have you doing a whole buch of different things: Overtaking a
set number of of slow-moving cars, setting a top speed, or lapping an opponent
on a short track within a certain time. The top speed challenges are usually
easy, but the other two can be very difficult. Especially on slow tracks, the
"traffic" drives well and can be hard to ovetake, and the lapping challenges
require fast driving without much room for style. Plus, it is hard to get many
Kudos on Challenges. They're stingy with the skill Kudos, and usually don't
leave much room for style.
One on One (OO)
Just as it sounds, it's you versus one opponent. You get to set your
opponent's head start, so give him a few seconds if you're feeling tough. If
you're not up to the challenge, give him a negative head start and start out
ahead. It's actually quite easy to win once you get in the lead. AI racers
are easy to block. One on ones are ok opportunities for both skill and style
Kudos.
Street Race (SR)
Go up against a field of up to 5 other racers. These are generally very easy
to pass since you are only required to place anywhere but last. But leaving
the requirement so low will earn you very few skill Kudos, even if you place
first. Setting the requirement to first and then getting first can get you a
few hundred skill Kudos. Of course, the number of Kudos you get also depends
on your car's CPF compared to the CPF of your opponents' cars. Street races
are a good opportunity to get style Kudos, too. The other racers' speeds vary
with how fast you drive. If you get ahead of the pack, they'll become
unnaturally fast, if you fall behind, they'll slow a bit. So, if you have a
long race, you only need to drive your best on the last lap or two. Just make
big slides and hang near the back of the pack for the first few laps, then turn
it on to overtake them near the end. But don't let the leader get too far
away. The only problem with street races is the chance to lose a lot of Kudos
by colliding with other cars. This is why it is a good idea to stay behind or
in front of the pack. Race defensively for the first laps so you gain Kudos and
don't lose them. But if you absolutely need to get a better place, then bash
them out of the way. Remember, in collisions with other cars, you don't lose
Kudos if it's the back area of your car that hits the opponent. The other
racers know this too, and drive like they want to keep their own Kudos. They
won't rear-end you, instead, they'll brake and turn away. This makes it pretty
easy to block them from passing you. But if they draw even with you and want
their car to be in the part of the road that you occupy, they'll side-swipe you
without remorse, so watch out.
Championship (CS)
A series of 2 to 5 street races, with the winner determined from points awarded
for place in each race. Your point standing compared to the other racers
doesn't actually matter, you just need to accomplish a set number of points to
move on. The basic requirement is usually somewhat challenging (must finish in
the middle or better on each race) but you won't get any skill Kudos if you
leave the requirement at its lowest level. You get 10 points for first, 6 for
second, 4 for third, 3 for fourth, 2 for fifth, and 1 for sixth, (no matter how
many racers there are) so set your requirement accordingly. Since
championships are so long, they're good places to earn a lot of style Kudos.
On each race, decide on if you're going for placement or Kudos. For placement,
push the opponents out of the way to get into first, then make sure you stay
there by blocking them. For Kudos, do your slides and drive defensively. The
championship is also another opportunity to get as many Kudos as you want.
Similar to the Hotlap trick, if you score enough points to clear the event, but
still have one or more races left in the championship, you can spend as long as
you like doing slides, then come in last place. Of course, the other cars will
still be driving around the track, so avoid head-on collisions.

Jokers
You'll probably have plenty of Kudos without using your jokers, but if you want
the extra Kudos, use the joker on a race where you can earn the most Kudos.
When you play a joker, you double the number of Kudos you receive (or lose) the
next time you try that event. You only get one chance with the joker, so make
sure you win the event. If you want to be cautious, copy your saved game
before you play the joker in case you lose. MSR automatically saves between
races and after each event, so you can't just reload if you fail. Once you've
used a joker on an event and succeeded, never race that event again, since
you'll no longer have the joker in effect. Keep a few jokers on hand for
special conditions on events. They require you to earn a certain number of
Kudos to get the special prize, and sometimes can be difficult. In particular,
the chapter championship forces you to use the MR-S against faster cars (in
some terrible weather) and score a lot of Kudos to unlock a cheat mode. A
joker will at least help meet the special requirement.
Choosing Events
Going in order is fine, but you can always skip around if you like. There were
a few events that I couldn't complete with any of the available cars, so I came
back when I had something better (those overtake challenges can be mean). Or
just do all the special events as soon as they are unlocked to get the goodies.

Anything I could put here wouldn't be as thorough as JPeat's Car Guide, which
is available right here on GameFAQS. He went and scientifically tested every
car in the game specifically to write that guide. From my experience with the

Here's the meat of the guide, every event from the entire game. It lists the
type of event, location, number of laps, time to beat, weather conditions, and
opponents where necessary. It should be easy to read, but here's a breakdown
of what might appear in an entry:
Type of event represented by the abbreviation used in the game: HL, OO and so
on.
Location listed as "Region: Street". I didn't write down the city, since it
is easy to figure out from the name of the region.
Any number that looks like "1:23.4" is the time to beat on the event. It's the
highest time you can get and still pass the event. You can always set this
time lower.
The weather condition is anything from "Clear" to "Downpour".
SPECIAL will mark the car, time, and Kudos requirements needed to earn a reward
on the course. Unfortunately, I finisned some specials before starting this
guide and I don't remember the specific reward or Kudos on those. Every car
and cheatmode reward is accurate, but anything marked with a ~ or ? is my best
guess. If anyone would like to fill in my missing info, it would be
appreciated and of course credited in this FAQ.

put them in a future version of this FAQ.
