Made by Ocean in 1985, The Neverending Story is an interactive fiction game
based on the movie. You play as Atreyu in the game, a boy who has been summoned
by the empress to try and save the land of Fantasia from a force named The
Nothing. The game has some very detailed descriptions of each of the locations
in the game, but unfortunately there is not much interactivity. You can't look
at specific objects or characters for example. What the game lacks in depth
however it makes up for with a well written story and some varied locations.
The game starts in a small clearing. Move NORTHEAST and EAST to the base of the
ivory tower. GET AURYN. Move SOUTHWEST to the forest track. GET STONE. Move
SOUTH to another small clearing to see a hunting horn. GET HORN. Move WEST and
NORTH to the western edge of the Great Forest. GET BRANCH. Move SOUTH, EAST,
NORTH, NORTHEAST, WEST and SOUTHWEST to the campfire clearing. LIGHT BRANCH in
the campfire. Move NORTHEAST and EAST six times to the mountain foothills.
LIGHT BUSHES with the burning branch. Move DOWN to the cave. HIT BOX with the
stone. GET CRYSTAL. Move UP, WEST five times, SOUTHWEST, SOUTH, WEST and
SOUTHEAST to the edge of the desert. BLOW HORN and Falkor will appear. GET
FALKOR. FLY SOUTH to cross the desert. Move EAST, SOUTH and EAST to the
outcropping rock at the back of the house. DROP CRYSTAL and Engywook will
explain how to pass the sphinxes. Move SOUTH twice to the sphinxes. WAIT until
the sphinxes blink and then move SOUTH to complete the first part.
PART 2
------
The second part starts in the Great Forest. DROP HORN. DROP STONE. Move EAST,
NORTH and EAST to the remains of the Spook City wall. GET GLOWGLOBE. Move WEST
twice and NORTH to the sparsely wooded area. GET ROPE. Move NORTHEAST to the
ruined building. REMOVE PLANKS to reveal spiral stairs. Move DOWN, SOUTHEAST
and SOUTH to the kitchen. GET KNIFE. Move NORTH and WEST to the well room. TIE
ROPE to the hook above the well. Move DOWN twice to the dark cell. GET POUCH
and a coin will drop out. GET COIN. Move DOWN, UP, EAST three times, SOUTHEAST,
SOUTHWEST and DOWN to the bottom of the dungeon stairs.
CUT WEB with the knife to reveal an exit to the west. Move WEST, SOUTHWEST and
WEST to the torture chamber. DROP COIN to reveal an exit to the west. Move WEST
to the treasure room. GET KEY. Move EAST twice, NORTHEAST, EAST, UP, NORTHEAST,
NORTHWEST, WEST twice, NORTHWEST, UP, SOUTH three times and EAST to the top of
a small hill. GET AURYN on the ground. GET FALKOR to complete the second part.
PART 3
------
The third part starts on an asteroid. Move EAST and NORTH to the ivory tower
door. UNLOCK DOOR with the golden key. Move EAST twice, UP, NORTHWEST, UP,
EAST, SOUTHEAST, UP, EAST three times and UP to the room with the ornate door.
SAY PLEASE and the door will open. Move EAST twice to complete the game.
ANCIENT BOOK
Found in the ancient church in part 2. It explains that a golden key must be
used to unlock the door to the ivory tower.
AURYN
Found at the base of the ivory tower in part 1 and at the top of the small
hill in part 2. The talisman allows Atreyu to fly on Falkor.
BLACK VELVET CAPE
Found in the sticky patch of quicksand at the south-west corner of the Swamps
of Sadness in part 1.
Stefan Reis adds: "The cape is not a critical part of the game, but it has a
function. By entering the torture chamber in part 2 there is a warning 'the
torturer has spotted you' and only a limited amount time is left before the
torturer gets you resulting in a Game Over. Carrying the cape in the
inventory works like a camouflage of sorts and the torturer is deluded.
BRILLIANT EGG SIZED DIAMOND
Found in the twisty maze of stone corridors in part 3. It is not used.
COIL OF STRONG ROPE
Found in the sparsely wooded area in part 2. It is tied to the hook above the
well in the well room.
DARK BLUE SAPPHIRE
Found in the twisty maze of stone corridors in part 3. It is not used.
GILT-COVERED HUNTING HORN
Found in the small clearing one screen south from the well trodden forest
track in part 1. It is blown at the edge of the desert to call Falkor. To
save inventory space, it should be dropped at the start of part 2.
FALKOR
Found after blowing the horn at the edge of the desert in part 1. He is used
to fly south across the desert. Falkor is also found at the top of the small
hill in part 2, where he flies away just before Fantasia explodes.
FOOD
Found in Atreyu's home in part 1. It can be eaten to give Atreyu full health.
GIANT COIN
Found by getting the giant pouch at the bottom of the well in part 2. It is
dropped in the torture chamber to reveal an entrance in the west wall.
GLOWGLOBE
Found at the remains of the Spook City wall in part 2. It is used to provide
light after climbing down the stone spiral stairs.
HEAVY FIST-SIZED STONE
Found on the well trodden forest track in part 1. It is used to hit the box
in the cave below the bushes at the mountain foothills. To save inventory
space, it should be dropped at the start of part 2.
LARGE GOLDEN KEY
Found in the treasure room in part 2. It is used to unlock the ivory tower
door in part 3.
OLD IRON KEY
Found in the room with the rats in part 2.
Stefan Reis adds: "Unlocks a door East to the 'Guard Area'. Behind it lies
the same room with the brown pouch which can be reached using the rope to
climb down the well. This seems to be an alternate way to get the coin even
if someone misses the meaning of rope and hook above the well. Getting the
iron key is kind of complicated (open tin, drop rat poison) so it would be a
shame if it has no function at all."
SHINY APPLE
Found in the untended apple orchard in part 2. It can be eaten if the spider
bites Auryn.
SMALL BROWN POUCH
Found at the bottom of the well in part 2. When the pouch is picked up, the
giant coin drops out of it. The pouch is not used and can be dropped.
SMALL KNIFE
Found in the kitchen in part 2. It is used to cut the spider web at the
bottom of the dungeon stairs.
SMALL PIECE OF LEATHER
Found in Atreyu's home in part 1. It is not used.
Stefan Reis adds: "By smashing the box with the crystal in it, two items are
released: the crystal itself and a glass fragment. The fragment is too sharp
to carry and trying to pick it up results in dropping it immediately. Having
the piece of leather found in Atreyu's hut in the inventory it is possible to
carry the fragment as well. This is exactly the point I started searching the
net: what's the use of this fragment? First I thought it could be used as
some kind of alternate knife to cut the spider web in part 2 but this doesn't
work. Any ideas? Like the iron key it's not just an item simply lying around,
only in combination with the piece of leather it can be carried, but why so
much effort if there's no use for it?"
If anyone does know if there is a use for the small piece of leather in the
game, please let me know and I will include it in the guide.
SPARKLING CRYSTAL
Found in the cave under the bushes in the mountain foothills in part 1. It
can be taken after the box has been broken with the heavy fist-sized stone.
It is given to Engywook to be given a hint on how to pass the sphinxes.
THICK KNOBBLY BRANCH
Found at the western edge of the Great Forest in part 1. It is lit in the
clearing campfire to make the thick slowly burning branch.
THICK SLOWLY BURNING BRANCH
Made by lighting the thick knobbly branch in the clearing campfire in part 1.
It is used to light the bushes at the foothills of the silver mountains.
WINE RED RUBY
Found in the twisty maze of stone corridors in part 3. It is not used.

*3: Burn the bushes with the burning branch to access the cave.
*4: Leads to the pasture.
*5: Leads to the plains.
*6: Leads to the trail.
*7: The desert can only be crossed on Falkor.

*3: Leads to the Library on map 3.
*4: Get Falkor at the end of part 2 to travel to the Asteroid on part 3.
MAP 3: PART 2 (UNDERGROUND)

*3: Tie the rope to the hook to go down the well.
*4: Cut the web with the knife to continue west.

*4: Ornate door. SAY PLEASE and it will open.
*5: Enter this room to complete the game.
