                             I. Introduction
==============================================================================

Greetings once again, C64 gamers of the world. Frankomatic has returned to
provide you with guidance once more, having finally gotten to the end of my
college career and having a little free time. The game I have set in my sights
is a little known one... Fame Quest.

You take on the role of a Knight, seeking to reach rank nine of knighthood and
all the fame, fortune, and wenches that comes along with it. On your journey
you'll encounter everything from bandits to dragons to vanquish and increase
your fame. Money will always be and issue, and defeat will not be tolerated.

No joysticks needed for this game, so get those keyboard fingers ready!

                              II. The Map
==============================================================================

Upon entering the game, you get asked if you'd like to see the instructions.
Go ahead and read, it'll save me the trouble of typing out the simple
controls. I'll wait.

Ready then? Okay, the next screen that comes up is the one you're going to be
looking at for the rest of the game. The top portion features your options at
your current area. The left window shows what you're encountering, the right
windo shows you and how much fame you need for the next level. The bottom
shows your current gold and fame levels, as well as your equipment.

The middle shows the map. Your current location on it is the flashing star,
and you start each level out in the upper left castle. The map is randomly
generated each game, and none of the terrain acts and differently than
anything else, so it doesn't matter much in the long run.

                              III. The Castle
==============================================================================

There are two castles in the game, one in the upper left corner and the other
in the lower right. In these castles, you have five different options to
choose from, and this section will explain those options.

Ask for help: Choosing this option when you're out of gold will get you very
meager amount. Since you need gold to stay alive while traveling (you use one
piece every few moves to simulate buying food), this will help keep you alive
for a little longer. You can use this option as often as you need to, as long
as you're out of gold when you try.

Buy or Improve Weapons: This takes you to the shop where you can buy or
upgrade your equipment. This will be explained in more detail in the Equipment
section.

Demand new Knight Grade: This, in a nutshell, levels you up. When you select
this option and have the right amount of Fame, you will become the next level
of Knight. You will also gain some extra gold to help finance your next
journey. If you're rank nine and use this option properly, you win.

Leave Castle: This option allows you to start wandering around the map to try
to amass fame. That's it. Once you pick this option, you have to step off the
castle, then back onto it again to go back, so keep that in mind.

Trade (Sell Equipment): This allows you to sell back your equipment at a
fraction of the price. Hooray!

And, that's all you can do in the castle. Time to see what you can take with
you on your quest!

                              IV. Equipment

This section will cover the equipment you can buy and upgrade, as well as the
costs to do so. As for the usage, it's fairly simple. The sword and lance are
both weapons, the lance being a little stronger and only usable on horseback.
The horse and shield add to your battle power as well, and should always be
used if you have them. And now, the listings.

Sword: Costs 25 gold to buy or upgrade. Can be upgraded twice.

Shield: Costs 10 gold to buy or upgrade. Can be upgraded once.

Lance: Costs 50 gold to buy or upgrade. Can be upgraded once. Must have a
horse to buy.

Horse: Costs 100 gold to buy. Can be upgraded once, but not at the shop.

To start out, you'll do best by buying a Sword and a Shield and upgrading both
one time. Your next thing to buy should be the second sword upgrade, followed
by a horse, and lastly the lance and its upgrades.

The strongest you can get is to be mounted on the upgraded horse with a maxxed
out lance and shield.

                              V. Fame Levels
==============================================================================

For each level of fame, you need a certain amount to go to the next level. You
start each level at zero fame, no holdovers. The formula is as follows:

Next Fame Level = 10 * (current level + 1)

And, for those of you that don't want to do simple math, here's a handy list.

Level 1:         Start each game at it
Level 2:         20 Fame
Level 3:         30 Fame
Level 4:         40 Fame
Level 5:         50 Fame
Level 6:         60 Fame
Level 7:         70 Fame
Level 8:         80 Fame
Level 9:         90 Fame
Win Screen:      100 Fame

And there you have it, nice and simple.

                       VI. Characters and Encounters
==============================================================================

This is it, the big part of the guide. The main part of the game. The
something of some other thing. As you wander the map, you'll randomly
encounter various characters who will offers you ways to gain or lose fame.
This section of the guide will outline the characters, give you their relative
strength (if they're hostile), and let you know what they'll usually ask of
you.

Alchemist
---------

The friendly alchemist will never want to fight with you unless you decide to
be a jerk and start something. When you talk to him, he'll usually either ask
you what grade you are, or occasionally a different question or offer to let
you gamble gold for fame.

If he asks any question of you, answer honestly for a small fame (and
sometimes gold) boost. If he wants to play a game, just spend your money
wisely.

Lastly, if you have a horse, he may ask to borrow it. If you say yes, he might
steal it, but if you say no, he might steal all your gold, which can be very
bad if you're in the middle of the map. What you value more is your decision
in the end, though.

Old Man
-------

The kindly old man also won't attack you unless you decide to start trouble.
He may ask you a question, or he may ask you to save him from something that's
menacing him. If he asks the latter, make sure you can actually best what
you're fighting against before accepting, because you won't be able to flee.

If you refuse to help, you'll take a small fame penalty... but that's better
than being dead. If he asks something else, be truthful for a fame increase.
Rarely, he may ask if you believe in wizards. If you answer 'No', he'll go
away, but if you say 'Yes', he'll usually turn into a Wizard... but not
always.

Knight
------

Another Knight seeking the path of glory! These fellows are a bit random,
always talk to them before attacking. If they offer no answer, you can fight
and kill them. If you do this right off the bat, however, you might take a
penalty for killing a friendly person.

If he's friendly, he'll usually ask to test your might against his in a
friendly duel. If you accept and win the fight, choose not to finish him off
for a hefty fame boost. To defeat a Knight, you can usually win with a once
upgraded sword and shield. Anything higher than that will pretty much be a
guaranteed win.

As for his equipment, he'll always mirror your selections, so no surprises
there.

Dragon
------

Everyone knows of dragons, and woe to the unfortunate person that runs into
one. These guys are the strongest foe in the game, and they will defeat you
unless you have the upgraded horse, and lance equipped. You may be able to
beat him without the upgrade to the horse, but it's rare.

Of course, killing him gives a good amount of fame, and a lot of people like
to ask if you've slain a dragon on your current quest, so it's well worth it
if you can manage it.

Random Castle or House
----------------------

Sometimes you'll find a random black castle or house out in the map. You can
enter it to see if anyone's there, or just move on. Any encounters inside are
identical to finding that character outside, so just look up the appropriate
area if you find something.

Demon
-----

Demons are bad news, second in strength only to Dragons. They're always
hostile to you, and you need to have the upgraded horse, and lance to have a
realistic shot at winning. If you lack the horse upgrade, there's still a
chance you can win, but it's very unlikely. Definitely avoid until you're
ready for them, even if you have to take a fame hit to do so.

Bandits
-------

Bandits are, yet again, always hostile towards you. They're pretty weak,
despite outnumbering you, so a singly upgraded sword and shield combo will
generally get you through alive. Anything more is a guaranteed win.

Wizard
------

Wizards are friendly to you, usually asking you questions about your quest and
occasionally wanting to play a game with you. The big thing he offers,
however, only shows up when you have a horse.

If you have a horse, he may ask to borrow it. If you allow him to, he might
steal it, but he also might give you the much sought after horse upgrade. This
makes it worth the risk.

After you get a horse, pray you run into one of these guys shortly afterwards.

King
----

The King is a rather rare encounter, but he's not hostile to you. He'll
usually just ask you a question about your quest, but he'll occasionally
challenge you to a friendly duel.

He can be a rather formidable opponent, but if you have the horse and lance
you can usually win. Actually, just having the horse in addition to your sword
and shield can do it most of the time.

Lady
----

The lady is another non-hostile character, most often found being menaced by
some other character of the game. If you can beat it, go ahead and save her
for some bonus fame. Otherwise, leave her in danger and take a small fame hit.
Better than being dead, after all.

Monk
----

Another fairly rare encouter, but non-hostile. He'll only ask you various
things about your quest, so answer him honestly to get small fame and gold
boosts.

And that is all of the characters I've encountered in many runthroughs of this
wonderful game.

                        VII. How to End the Game
==============================================================================

There are only two ways to end this game, victory or defeat. Here's a slightly
more detailed listing, though, for your perusal.

- Get to Level 9, gain 100 fame, and demand a new Knight level to win the
game.

- Get defeated twice in the same quest to be killed in battle. Just a warning,
but losing one battle seems to turn the game's random rolls a little out of
your favor, so losing once is generally a sign of the end.

Yep, that's it. Simple, eh?
