I. Introduction
==============================================================================
Hello friends, Frankomatic checking in once more with another C64 game guide
for you all to enjoy! Dino Eggs is another game I have fond memories of from
my childhood, even though I was really really bad at it at the time. But the
fact that you can devolve into a spider upon death made it slightly less
annoying over all.
Seeing how a walkthrough can't really be done for this, this will be more of
a strategy guide than anything else. I'm still not the best player at this
game, so it'll be updated every now and again as I learn new tricks. Now
then, let's get moving on, hm?
==============================================================================
II. Controls
==============================================================================
Plug your Joystick into Port 2 for this one, folks.
Left and Right: Move in the appropriate direction
Up and down: Climb up or down ladders
Fire: Jump
Down + Fire: Pick up/drop an object, move a rock, or enter the time warp
Simple enough, isn't it?
==============================================================================
III. Characters, Enemies, and Objects
==============================================================================
In this section, I will provide you with descriptions of everything in the
game that you can run into, and what you can do with it. Or what it can do to
you, if applicable.
Time Master Tim
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is you! You are the hero and the cause of the game's problem. While
messing around with the time stream, you accidentally infect the dinosaurs
with the measels, causing them to be doomed to a path of extinction. Good
job, hope you're happy. The only way to save them is to rescue the babies and
eggs and take them somewhere safe using your time powers! But not everything
is on your side...
Coincidentally, you happen to look like Tom Sawyer and can jump like Mario.
You're also pretty fragile.
Dino Eggs
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These little white ovals are what you're looking to collect and save! They're
scattered rather randomly about the levels, sometimes hidden behind rocks.
You can carry up to three at a time with you to take back to the time warp.
If you get touched by a spider or other insect, the eggs become infected
along with you and die.
Wood
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wood is your friend. Wood looks like sticks on the screen. You can carry only
one bit of wood at a time. If you put two pieces of wood in the same place,
you start a...
Fire
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your best friend and one of your most dangerous enemies at the same time. As
long as a fire is burning, the mother dinosaur will stay away from the
playing area. If anything at all touches a fire, it burns to death
automatically. Yes, this includes you.
The timer under the fire shows how long it'll last. When it gets really low,
the flames will die out. This gives you an opportunity to put another piece
of wood on it to retart the timer.
Rocks
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your only true ally in the game aside from the harmless wood. Rocks can only
be dropped by you and only from above them, so they cause you no danger. If
you drop a rock on a spider, milipede, or snake, they will die. They can also
kill baby dinosaurs and make fires die faster too, so be careful.
occasionally, eggs are hidden behind these as well, so it's always worth your
while to check them.
Time Gate
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your safety zone, point collector, and way to leave levels. As long as you're
standing in front of the gate, spiders, milipedes, and snakes can't harm you.
If you have eggs and caged baby dinosaurs that you want to cash in, hit down
and fire in front of the gate and you'll warp off for a few moments to
collect your points. When you're ready to leave the current level, hit down
and fire in front of the gate twice while empty handed. Lastly, going to the
time gate when poisoned will bring your health back and stop the poison.
Spiders
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ah, the spider. One of the more annoying foes of the game. These little
buggers appear at the top of the screen and wander around a bit before
lowering themselve down through the field by a thread. If they touch you, you
get poisoned, your eggs will be poisoned and cause you to lose points, and
your health begins to drop. If it hits zero before you get to the time gate,
you devolve into a spider and lose a life.
Another annoyance about spiders is that they can grab up baby dinosaurs. If
there happens to be a baby dinosaur wandering about, the next spider will
wait at its level until the dino walks into it. The spider will then grab it
and start towards the bottom again. If you walk through the thread before the
spider gets to the bottom, you can save the dino. If it's already past the
bottom level, though, you're too late.
Walking through the thread, rocks, and fire can kill spiders.
Snakes and Milipedes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Snakes and milipedes are muchly the same. They both appear on the screen and
move across it horozontally for a while before disappearing again. The only
real differences are that they look different and that they appear in
different parts of the screen.
If you look at the screen levels as hallways, the snakes will appear on the
floor and the milipedes by the ceiling. neither will move vertically at all,
so they can both move over the holes between the platforms with no problem.
The snake can hit you as long as you're on the ground, but the milipede can
only hit you if you happen to jump or fall into it.
Rocks can kill both of these enemies, but fire can only kill the snake. The
milipede is too high to be damaged by the flames. Touching them has the same
effect as touching a spider.
Baby Dinosaurs
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Whilst you're working at collecting the dinosaur eggs, some of them will
begin to hatch. These baby dinosaurs are particularly helpless, but worth a
lot of points if you can save them. Unfortunately, you can't touch them
directly or else you infect them and they die. They also mysteriously poison
you in the process.
In order to save them, just jump over them! This will put a box around them,
protecting them from all harm. The next time you go throught he warp gate,
they'll teleport out with you. Spiders have a bad habit of killing these
little guys, and they also tend to wander into fires if there's one nearby
too, so you need to be quick.
Mama Dinosaur
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you run around too long without a fire going, you'll get a warning about
the mama dinosaur approaching the area. If you fail to heed this warning, a
giant foot will eventually stomp down on part of the field. If you happen to
be under it, you get a lot flatter.
The mama dinosaur is entirely invincible, but it'll go away whenever a fire
is built for as long as the fire sticks around. Keep an eye on your campfires
and you'll never have to deal with this beast often!
Spikey Ball Thing
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you pick up one of these things, a message saying 'Power Gained' will be
displayed on the bottom of the screen. To this day I still have no idea what
this actually does. Go figure, eh?

IV. Strategies and Tactics
==============================================================================
This will just be a collection of hints, tips, and tricks that I've made to
help you make those three lives of your last a little bit longer.
* Let's face it, Tim is slow. The snakes and milipedes are a little faster
than him, so keep that in mind if you're trying to run away from them.
* Tim can carry a maximum of 3 dinosaur eggs or 1 piece of wood. He cannot
carry some of each, it's one or the other.
* Walking off one side of the screen will bring you back on the opposite
side. Use this to get past platform gaps that look too big to jump across.
* Always err on the side of caution. No matter how many trips it takes you,
successfully bringing 12 eggs will net you 24 points in the end. Don't take
unnecessary risks that might kill off eggs.
* If you're looking for a high score, don't let the baby dinosaurs be killed
or leave any behind. They lose you the most points for that. Coincidentally,
saving them is worth the same as bringing three eggs to the gate, and more if
you save several in one go. So there's no reason to let the spiders get them.
* If you need to jump over your fire, wait for it to die down a little bit.
WHen it's at its highest stage, it's much more trouble than it's worth to
jump it without dying.
* To save time, always try to revitalize your fire when it gets low rather
than having to start a new one from scratch. More often than not, you'll end
up in a screen with only 3 wood in it, so if you miss your chance you're out
of luck and have to deal with the mama dinosaur.
* If you're close to the edge of a mama dino stomping and jump away from it,
sometimes you'll pass through the foot and survive. It doesn't always work
though so don't make a habit of close calls.
* If a baby dinosaur is standing near the edge of a ledge so you can jump
over to cage it, wait for a spider to grab it and kill the spider. You can
cage it down on the next floor instead.
* To get the highest possible score from each scene, you need to cage baby
dinosaurs. All of them. Don't collect the eggs, just save the babies when
they hatch. This, of course, takes patience and you'll likely run out of
firewood... but each group of 3 babies saved gets you twenty four points,
while three eggs only gets you six.
* You can leave a stage any time you want, but you'll take penalties if you
leave with eggs or uncaged baby dinosaurs roaming free.
Feel free to submit any more hints, tips, and strategies you might have to me
at
[email protected]. I'll update and give proper credit to whomever sends
me anything, or to add things that I come up with on my own.

VI. Future Additions
==============================================================================
All future updates will likely be more tips and tactics, obviously. Perhaps
I'll add a section for submitted high scores if people show interest, as this
is a difficult game to get very high scores in.
