01.)                    INTRODUCTION                                 G0100
===============================================================================

Welcome to 'Count Duckula' for the ZX Spectrum, released by Alternative
Software in 1989. The game was also released on the Amiga, C64, CPC and Atari
ST at some point. This guide is based and focuses on the ZX version but the
games are almost identical.

Castle Duckula, home for many centuries to a dreadful dynasty of vicious
vampire ducks - The Counts of Duckula. Legend has it that these foul beings can
be destroyed by a stake through the heart or exposure to sunlight. This does
not suffice however, for they may be brought back to life by means of a secret
rite that can be performed once a century when the moon is in the eighth house
of Aquarius. The latest reincarnation did not run according to plan...

Created by British studio Cosgrove Hall, and a spin-off from DangerMouse, Count
Duckula is show in which the Duckula character was a recurring villain. The
show aired from 1988 to 1993 in the UK as well as many other countries
including the US. All sixty-five episodes were released on three Region 2 DVD
sets in the UK.

Incidentally the subtitle for this game, 'No Sax Please - We're Egyptian' was
the name of the first ever Count Duckula episode back 1988. It features Duckula
in the search for a mystical Egyptian saxophone that he hopes will enable him
to be a smash hit in show business. The same is true for the game's story. The
title itself is a parody of the UK play (and later film) by the name of "No Sex
Please, We're British". Subsequently the title has often been used as spoof in
other pop culture.

Count Duckula and his faithful servants Igor and Nanny have transported
themselves and their castle over to the land of the Pharaohs, Egypt. There they
decide to search for the mystical Sax, an ancient saxophone with strange
magical powers. They know that the Sax is hidden somewhere in the tomb of the
great Pharaoh Upanatem, a gigantic pyramid in the middle of the desert. What
they do not know is that they have also brought along some unwanted guests in
the shape of the Crow Brothers.

===============================================================================

Duckula must explore the pyramid, solving puzzles and collecting useful items,
while keeping an eye out for wandering Mummies, Crows and flying Bats. With
Igor keeping an eye on the time and Nanny keeping an eye on Duckula he must
find the mystical Sax before the dawn breaks in Transylvania and the castle
returns him home.

You control Duckula. You must avoid the Mummies, Bats, sliding rocks and the
Crow Brothers. If you are touched by any of these the clock advances. When the
time hits 12:00 the game is over and Igor is very disappointed in you. The
castle will always leave automatically and it is a long way home to
Transylvania on foot. Get that sax before it is too late!

DISPLAY:
````````
The top of the screen is for the platformer action, the bottom display for the
items and data.
Bottom left houses up to three items you have picked up so far (if any). You
can not pick up more than three so you must use one of them up first.
The Time is to keep track of your progress. Getting touched by enemies advances
time even faster, picking up Ankhs shaves 3 hours off.
The score is also kept as you progress through the pyramid, mainly from picking
up items and using them.
Finally, the left number is the current amount of keys you hold. From the looks
of it the maximum is 9 but there are only around 7 in the game I believe.
ITEMS:
``````

In the pyramid, Duckula can pick up various really useful items; if you don't
want an item then Duckula must jump over it as it is automatically picked up by
walking into it. Duckula can carry up to three items. For picking up an
additional item one must be used up first. When you wish to use an item then
press the keys 1, 2 or 3 to correspond with the wanted item in the item slots.

Keys:>

Used to open the stone doors, unless Nanny has smashed through. A key is used
up when used once but you can carry several in your inventory.

Ankh:>

If Duckula uses this it will put back the clock three hours, giving more time
to find the sax before the castle transports back. These are not very common
and often out of the way of your normal route to finding the sax.

Quest Items:>

Quest items are only useful for specific things, you can read about it in the
walkthrough but here is a quick overview:
Death Mask, not for wearing yourself, but fits nicely into a slot.
Hammer, used for breaking things, naturally.
Jar, usually contains something, breaking it might reveal its contents.
Large Key, keys open doors, large keys open...?
Sandbag, the ancient Egyptians were really fond of weights and scales.

CHARACTERS & FOES:
``````````````````
Nanny:>
Nanny is, as her name suggests, Duckula's nanny, as well as housekeeper. Has a
habit of walking through walls, well why not? Doors are boring and she's not
too bright. Fortunately this will help Duckula get about the pyramid by
appearing randomly. Do not make the mistake to rely on her help, because Nanny
is, well, a little dumb.
Igor:>
Duckula's butler. Will feed Duckula with delicious broccoli sandwiches,
Duckypoo's favourite. Appears at random to boost the timer a little (10-20
seconds).
Crow Brothers:>
Four criminally inclined crows (Ruffles, Burt, and two unnamed brothers) who
are typically seen scaling the walls of Castle Duckula with the aid of
climbing equipment. These dopey villains are climbing up the inside of the
pyramid and falling down; don't let them touch Duckula. Their behaviour is
tough to judge. The ropes they climb on are very long but they will re-appear
from the screen above or below almost immediately. Timing past them is harder
than it seems, especially when they come from above and drop down quickly.
Mummies:>
Avoid them, jump over them or run away. Jumping is easy once you get the hang
of how to dodge them. There are often alternative routes with less mummies
though, go explore a little.
Bats:>
Yuk, Yuk, how annoying. They lose you points if they touch Duckula. Their
pattern is easy enough to spot, but that does not make them less annoying.
Have I mentioned they are annoying yet? Well they ARE annoying. You would
think they leave Duckula alone, but maybe it is because he is not a real
vampire...
Rocks:>
Watch out, they hurt. A rock will slide up and down at the wall. By itself it
is quite easy to get by but often they have a another foe like a mummy around
and timing past it is a tad harder.
CONTROLS: (SPECTRUM & AMSTRAD)
`````````

O         = Left
P         = Right
SPACE     = Jump (you cannot jump while on stairs!)
1, 2 or 3 = Use object

CHEATS:
```````
Called POKEs on the ZX, enter 43316 at value 0 to stop the timer. This
basically means you are invincible.
GENERAL HINTS:
``````````````

* Take it slow. Even though you have a time limit, there is plenty to finish
 the game. Most of the pyramid does not need to be explored, having this
 walkthrough handy obviously helps there. Igor's snacks are not necessary to
 complete the game, just a nice little boost for when you have been touched by
 too many enemies.

* Whenever you enter a new screen, be very careful. Nearly every screen has an
 enemy which can harm you, and walking into it can quickly get messy. Thus
 when you approach the end of the current screen, only tap the direction so
 you just pop in at the edge of the new location.

* You can not jump when standing on steps. This is not a design flaw, every
 ledge can be reached from above or below the staircase anyway. There are no
 enemies that will attack you while on the stairs as far as I know, although
 it may happen you come across a bat here and there that will be trouble.

* Jumping over mummies looks like you do not really dodge them at all, but it
 is good enough. As long as you are in the air you will not take damage.

* There are enough keys to get through the game quickly, but often there are
 red herrings that will take you a key to even reach that key you saw, or it
 is likely there are more than one door blocking access to just a single key.
 If you use the walkthrough then this is nothing to worry about, if you
 explore on your own then you have to plan your route as well which will most
 likely be similar to below. It is possible to add one or two ankhs on your
 trip without using up more keys than you will receive on the longer trip.

* Ankhs are great and all, but I found they take longer to retrieve, especially
 if you are bad at dodging enemies. Ignoring them is my motto.

03.)                    WALKTHROUGH                                  G0300
===============================================================================

As you start, walk right and past your first mummy. Up the stairs, jump to the
right and climb up another flight of stairs. Run right down a flight of stairs
and continue on this level until you find the first key. Return left until you
return where you climbed the stairs up and down. This time only climb up and
then jump right to the ledge. Follow this path while avoiding enemies until you
reach stairs leading down. Take them down and open the door when you get to it.
Your next destination is the very bottom right corner where you will find the
SANDBAG.

Return left up the stairs, continue on this level to the left until reaching
the stairs continuing up. Immediately jump right and follow along as you go up
on the right side, then left where you find two keys. Up the next steps jump
right and follow the path past a door. On the next steps jump right. Follow
along until you reach a small pedastal. Use the SANDBAG to open the door.

Walk left and up the stairs. Remember this spot because you will pass it a
couple more times soon. First jump all the way left and open the door. Go up
the stairs to find a key and when you get the to next screen be very careful of
the trapdoor underneath the wall paintings. Basically, from the start of the
screen jump over to the DEATH MASK and then back. A drop here is really going
to set you back very far.

Return to the spot (just jumping back a few times) and this time descend the
stairs on the left side. Leap over a couple of ledges here and end up finding a
key. In the room at the end is another trap door, another nasty one too. It
starts around half-way of the art hanging on the wall. Jump over it for the
JAR, then back all the way to the spot you should be familiar with already.

This time we will go left at the top and continue around the side and open the
stone door at the top. Ascend another set of stairs and jump right. Up here you
will find a large HAMMER. Use the HAMMER in your inventory and the JAR will
automatically be broken to reveal a LARGE KEY.

Descend one floor and open the door on the left side. Upstairs is a large slot
to fit the DEATH MASK. The door will open but be very careful of the third and
final trapdoor to avoid. This one is not too bad because you can just quickly
return one flight of stairs. Nevertheless it starts just underneath the door
and has about double its width.

One the other side of the trapdoor is a keyhole. Use the LARGE KEY in it to
complete the game.

                     In the Vampire Hall of Fame-yeah,
                    There's not a vampire zanier than...

                        He won't bite beast or man,
                          'Cos he's a vegetari-an.
                    And things never run to plan for...
                                  DUCKULA!

                      If you're looking for some fun,
