1. Introduction
================
Howdy!
Welcome to my Last Ninja 2 walkthrough.
This walkthrough is for anyone who either plays Last Ninja 2 on the Commodore
64 or with the rom using a C64 emulator on PC.
You may be using this walkthrough for one of the following reasons listed
below:

-you are having trouble playing the game and need help on particular sections
-you are new to the game
-to be told what to do in all or most parts of this walkthrough, which in that
case, I don't think you understand the meaning of true and fair gaming.

Whichever the case, the day must go on, so here we go...


2. The Controls
================

Keyboard Controls
------------------

F1 - Turn sound on/off
F3/F5 - Cycle through Ninja's inventory
F7 - Pause game
Run/Stop - Kill the Ninja
Space Bar - Cycle through Ninja's Weapons
J - Select joystick orientation. Try these all out and go with the one most
comfortable.
I recommend the normal mode 2.

Joystick Controls
------------------

This game can only be played with a joystick. It is to be plugged into port 2
only.

In this game, the movement of the Ninja is 3 dimensional, meaning all the moves
you make on the joystick are relative to the direction the Ninja is facing on
the screen.
So to change the direction the Ninja is facing, roll the joystick handle
through the positions desired until you are facing the direction you want.

To walk forward - push the joystick into the direction the Ninja is facing.

To walk backwards – push the joystick into the opposite direction the Ninja is
facing.

To drift across the path - push the joystick in the direction you want him to
veer (applies to both walking forwards and backwards). So in this case, on the
joystick it will be the left, right, up and down directions.

To pick up items - hold down the fire button then pull the joystick bottom
right or bottom left diagonally.

To somersault or jump - run in the direction you want the Ninja to somersault
and push the fire button.
Or if you wish to jump right on the spot, do the same, but pushing the fire
button right after you have held down on the direction you want the Ninja to
somersault.

Fighting Movements
-------------------

The following is a list of all the moves, both armed and unarmed, that the
Ninja can perform. To perform any of the moves, hold down on the firebutton
with the Ninja stationery.

Unarmed moves:
Kick  - down
Punch – up, left or right
Duck  - up left or up right

Armed moves: (sword, nunchakus and staff)
Stab       - right
Slash      - left
High Stab  - up
Kick       - down
Parry      - up left or up right

Throwing moves: (shiraken, etc)
Throw - left or right

3. Before you Play the Game (for newbies only)
============================
For those of you who have played the Last Ninja 2 on C64 before, just move onto
the next section.
If you are new to the game I suggest you take note of the following:

-Practice with the all joystick controls on the starting screen of the first
level before moving on.

-Your life meter is the red box at the bottom of the screen. It is a square
spiral type of shape.

-Your life meter depletes when being hit by an enemy, touching harmful things,
falling off platforms and falling off into non playing areas.

-The enemy's life meter is to the left of yours and it is orange. Their energy
depletes only after you have hit them with any move or weapon

-In this game, you move across different screens as you reach the end of them.

-Extra lives are earned by collecting hamburgers throughout the game.

-Throughout the game, you have to collect items in order to complete the game.

-After killing off an enemy's life, the enemy's life regenerates/revives the
amount of times corresponding to which level you are on. So it goes like this:

-After losing all your lives, you will start again on the same level you were
on with the same amount of lives you had when you started that level.

-Be careful when you are in the areas where you have to jump as you can fall
down and automatically lose a life. This is where you mainly lose your lives.

-You complete a level after you make it to the end of the level just like any
other standard platform game.

-Be prepared to flip the disc over to side 2 after you have completed level 3
Don't worry if you push the fire button by accident with the wrong disc or side
in the drive, the game won't stuff up.
Just insert the correct side or disc, then proceed.


4. Before you use this Walkthrough and how to Understand it
===========================================================

On the next section of this document is the walkthrough. Please take note of
the following before you go on to use the walkthrough:

-The walkthrough for each level shows you only one way of completing the level.
There are of course multiple ways of completing the levels, but you will still
end up doing the same things.
After you know your way around, you should be able to do the levels by yourself
and in any way you wish.

-The walkthrough of Level 6: the Mansion, shows two different ways of
completing the level.

-The walkthrough will not tell you when to fight, nor mention anything about
fighting, except for the last level. To fight or not, is entirely up to you!
A section on how to fight is in section 6. Combat.

-Because in this game you can move in 3 dimensions and all directions to move
into are diagonal, it would be difficult to distinguish between one word
directions ie up, down, left, right, so diagonal directions are used instead

So here is the key: UR - Up Right        Some of these might be used: L - Left
                       UL - Up Left                                          R - Right
                       DR - Down Right
                       DL - Down Left

These directions don't necessarily indicate which corner to go into, but the
direction of the path. Eg if a path is DR, it could be close to the bottom left
of the screen or it could even be closer to the top of the screen.

I reckon N,S,W,E are confusing don't you think?

-A new sentence on a new line of what to do indicates a new screen.



5. The Last Ninja 2 Walkthrough
================================
=================================

Level 1: Central Park
======================
Go UR in between the red curtains.
Go UR, use the punch move to turn on the switch by punching it, then go DL back
to where you came from.
Go DR and fall into the trap door.
Go L to pick up the key, then go UL to outside. Don't step back onto that grey
rectangle where you jumped in from, you will teleport back to the very
beginning and will have to turn the switch on again.
Go UL, DL then DR following the path.
Go DR until you reach the yellow box, pick up the shirakens in this yellow box,
then go DL.
Go to the DL side of the screen somersaulting all the way to avoid the juggling
pins from the clown. Pick up the map on the grass, climb up the wooden cage,
then go DL. The map is optional, but collecting it will flash all collectable
items from then on.
Go DL somersaulting through the platforms, pick up the staff, then go back to
where you came from. Climb back down the wooden cage carefully aligning
yourself to it, but without holding any weapons. Now push the space bar to use
the staff (optional).
Go UR.
Go UR somersaulting all the way to avoid the juggling pins again.
Go UR, then R.
Go DR.
Go DR, then into the Female toilets to pick up one half of the nunchakus, then
go back UL.
Go UL.
Go UR picking up the hamburger along the way.
Go DR, then into the female toilets to pick up the other half of the nunchakus,
go back UL.
Now you can use the nunchakus as an alternative to the staff.
Go DL. Push F3 to switch to the key, then open the gate by using the pick up
move, go UL.
Go DL until you reach the river. As the dingy comes along, jump onto it, then
jump off into the other side of the river, go DL. Timing is crucial.
Go to the place where you see the water, then when you reach the end of the
path jump UR off the screen (try to avoid the bees). Now you are on an island.
Using your staff, use the stab move to move the dingy.
Move to the very bottom of the island, then jump DL off the screen.
Go through the path again, then UL.
Go UL and as the dingy comes along, jump onto it, then jump off the other side
of the river, go UL to complete the first level!

Just before going on, try not to use up all the shirakens. Save at least one
for later on...


Level 2: The Streets
=====================
Go DR.
Go DL crossing on the green light.
Go DL, then UL.
Go UL, kick the door open, then move on into the Ninja shop!
Go UL, pick up the sword, then go back to where you came from. Now push the
space to cycle through your weapons to use the sword (optional).
Go DR.
Go DR, cross the road on the red light.
Go DR avoiding the dropping pots. Getting hit by a pot will deplete half your
energy!
Go DR picking up the hamburger along the way and again avoiding the dropping
pots.
Go DR.
Go DL picking up the bottle along the way and crossing on the green light.
Go DL, then UL.
Go UL into the small building to pick up the crowbar, then go back to where you
came from.
Go DR, then UR.
Go UL crossing on the green light.
Go DL.
Keep on going DL.
Go DR.
Keep going DR picking up the hamburger along the way.
Push F3 to switch to the crowbar, then use the pick up move on the man-hole,
move into it to complete level 2!


Level 3: The Sewers
====================
Go UR.
Go UR, then into the door UL.
Go UL, then into the door UR.
Go UR, picking up the brown crowbar (or whatever you call it!), then go back.
Go UL jumping up onto the platform.
Go UL, jump over the big gap, then as you approach the corner, stop to wait for
the spiders to come down, then go DL avoiding any spiders.
Go DL to open the trap door with the brown crow bar, then go into it. Don't go
into the door as this will lead you back to where you started.
Once you've climbed down the ladder, go UR.
Go UR, then go into the door in the middle (any other door will deplete your
energy).
Go UL.
Keep going UL, then go into the door at the end.
Go UR.
Go DR. Enter the first door.
Go UR to the burning fire. Switch to the bottle you picked up from level 2,
then use the pick up move to put the fire onto the bottle (the picture of the
bottle should have a red liquid now), continue going UR.
Now wait for the black alligator to come out of it's hiding place, holding the
bottle only (no weapons) throw the bottle at the alligator, now the alligator
should burst into flames allowing you continue going UR, into the door to
complete level 3 and onto level 4!

Flip the disc over to Side B.


Level 4: The Basement
======================
This bit is a bit sticky.
Hug around the first box on your R, then work your way clockwise around the set
of boxes to the R, then go DR.
Go UR, climb up the ladder, then go DL.
Go DL to pick up the access card, then go back.
Go UR. Go around to DR.
Go DR, then into the door.
Go UR to pick up the bowl of food, then go back.
Go UL.
Go around to DL.
Go DL to the ladder. Carefully align yourself to the ladder and climb down
carefully because it's easy to fall off, then go UR.
Go around to DR.
Now you come across these fast running trams, either simply jump over them, or
if you can time it correctly, you can even run over it going DR. If I were you,
I would just jump over to avoid losing lives.
Go around to DL.
Go DL jumping across the tram line and picking up the hamburger along the way.
Go around to DR.
Now here you will come across a set of boxes. To make it to the other end,
carefully move onto the first box, make a downwards somersault to the next box,
a DL somersault to the next box, a DR somersault to the next and a R somersault
to the other side, then proceed to DR.
Go DL.
Go around to DR.
Holding the piece of chicken, put it onto the opium and the chicken will turn
green, then go back.
Go around to UR.
Go DR.
Go DR near the black panther, as it sits up, feed it the opium chicken by using
the pick up move and it will kill it, then go DR.
Go UR, use the access card to open the door, then go in to level 5!


Level 5: The Office
====================
Go DL.
Go UL into the door.
Access the white computer to get a four digit number (it will be the last 4
digits of the timer when you started the level). Write this number down or
memorise it as you'll be needing it later on. Go back.
Go UL.
Keep going UL, the other room has nothing in it.
Open the secret passage way by switching the brown lamp light, then go UR.
Climb up the ladder.
After you've reached the top, go UR.
Go around to UL. Now you will see a spinning fan. Go UR next to the fan, close
up to the right of it. Now hold down up on the joystick to get blown past the
fan, open the gate, then go in UR.
Now you are outside. Go DL, jumping over the gap. Watch out for someone here!
Go around to UL.
Go UL, then climb up the ladder.
Once you've reached the top, go UR.
Now you will have reached the helicopter. Go UR right up close to the
helicopter, then use the pick up move to grab hold of the ladder on the
helicopter. In case you accidentally missed the helicopter, go to the very R of
the screen and make a UR jump off the screen.
You will now be flown to level 6!


Level 6: The Mansion
=====================
As soon as the level starts, the helicopter will be flying in from the left.
Push the fire button to release the Ninja onto the first platform as the
helicopter flies into it. Now jump DR to the next platform. Jump UR to the
chimney, then carefully drop down UL, go UR.
Go UR until you reach the open window of the roof, drop into the window.

Now below are the two different ways you can complete this level:

The Normal Way
---------------
Go DL.
Go UL into the door.
Go UL to pick up the rope on the wall, then go back.
Go UR.
Go UL into the door. Holding the rope without a weapon, go UL to the grey
entrance way, you will now climb down the wall.
As you come into the kitchen, go DL.
Go into the entrance way behind the plant.
Go down the stairs DR, turn on the light switch, then go into the room UR.
Make your way through the winding path, going UR to the next room.
Now you will see steam coming out of the boiler machine. Go UR to the white
switch, then switch it changing the course of the steam. Now go UR to the Last
Battle!

The Cheap Lazy Way
------------------
Go DL.
Go DL past the alarm sensors. Make your way down the stairs.
If you want to, you can go UR into the first door, then UR to switch the alarm
off. If you leave it alone, the baddies will be twice as strong for the level.
Go into the entrance way behind the plant.
Go down the stairs DR, turn on the light switch, then go into the room UR.
Make your way through the winding path, going UR to the next room.
Now you will see steam coming out of the boiler machine. Go UR to the white
switch, then switch it changing the course of the steam. Now go UR to the Final
Battle!


Level 7: The Final Battle
==========================
Go UR.
Now you will have come to a big room with a star on the ground. Go UR to the
red banner.
Now input the four digit code you obtained from level 5 into the safe to open
it up. Now you will have a black ball. The Evil Ghost of Shogun, Kunitoki will
appear on the screen from DL and will come straight for you!
Now you have to kill him inside the star with all the candles lit up.
You can either light all the candles first, then kill him inside the star.
Or light up some of the candles, kill him inside the star then light the rest
of the candles. Or challenge yourself by killing him, then light all the
candles!
This is where the shirakens come in handy. Although Kunitoki is tough, it takes
only one shiraken to take him out.
If you have lots of lives, have fun fighting Kunitoki anyway you wish. Try bare
handed!
After you have killed Shogun in the star with all the candles lit up, enjoy the
sight of Shogun being contained within something. Put the black ball back into
the safe to complete the Last Ninja 2!

6. Combat
==========
Fighting is quite easy in the game. There are basically 2 ways to fight, the
impatient way or the patient conservative way. The impatient way is just going
up to a bad guy and using any of the fighting moves while of course having the
bad guy hit you back. The patient conservative way is going up close to a bad
guy, hitting them, pulling back and hitting them again if possible. That way,
you will avoid getting hurt. The best way is by using a weapon and the stab
move. Remember, it is possible to finish the game without losing any lives.
This is only achievable if you adopt the patient conservative way of fighting.

Unarmed Moves
--------------
Punching will deal the least amount of damage in the game. Kicking will deal
more damage than punching. However, punching multiple times is faster than
kicking multiple times.

Armed moves
------------
High stabbing will deal the least damage of the armed moves, but it is quicker.
Stabbing will have a longer range and deals more damage than high stabbing, it
should be your most common fighting move during the game.
Slashing deals the same damage as stabbing, but has a shorter range. It should
only be used when a bad guy is right up close to you where stabbing usually
won't work.


During the game, you will get a chance to collect 4 weapons that you can use to
pound the bad guys with. The only weapon that you must collect is the staff to
be able to move the dingy and advance onto Level 2: The Streets. The other 3
weapons the nunchakus, shirakens and the sword are optional, because you can
finish the game without them.

The Staff
----------
You collect the staff on Level 1: Central Park.
The staff has the longest reach out of the 3 hand weapons.
It deals the weakest damage out of all the weapons.

The Nunchakus
--------------
You collect the nunchakus on Level 1: Central Park, each half from the two
public toilets.
The nunchaku has the shortest reach out of the 3 hand weapons.
It deals more damage than the staff, but less damage than the sword.

The Sword
----------
You collect the sword on Level 2: The Streets.
The sword has a longer reach than the nunchakus, but less than the staff.
It deals the most damage out of the 3 hand weapons.
Therefore after you collect the sword, the nunchakus become obsolete.

The Shirakens
--------------
You collect the skirakens on Level 1: Central Park.
The shirakens can only be thrown. If you hit an enemy with a shiraken, they
will immediately lose all their energy. However, you will only get 9 of them.
Once they are used up, you can't collect anymore. So it is important that you
save at least one to use against Kunitoki to make life easier.
