Soul Charge Cancel
According to Gamest No.238 (15 November 1998) after an
A+B+K Soul Charge and the character's flashing green, her next
attack will hit as a counter hit. OTOH, after an A+B+K,G Soul
Charge Cancel and the character's flashing yellow, her next
attack, if it's one of a list of attacks (see below) specified
by the game designers, will become Unblockable. During such a
Soul-Charge-Cancel Unblockable, her weapon probably has a flame
effect. Guard Impacts can't affect a normal Unblockable, but can
affect a Soul-Charge-Cancel Unblockable, when the attack levels
(high/middle or middle/low) of the Guard Impact and the
Soul-Charge-Cancel Unblockable match.
(Note: Both = All four Guard Impacts, possibly because the
attack hits M. H+M = Only the two Guard Impacts that hit High
and Middle. M+L = Only the two Guard Impacts that hit Middle and
Low. "?" = Unlisted in this issue of Gamest, but may or may not
be Unblockable after Soul Charge Cancel.)

3.0 Tactics
3.1 Sophitia
(Note: The following section is written by Dentari.)
Sophitia is great for custom strings. She has a good mix
of medium/far to close range attacks. The important thing is to
know the range of each attack. Sophitia is very much an in-close
pressure fighter, so you need to know the moves that will keep
you on top of them. Many of Sophitia's attacks are very linear,
and people will try to side-step her, so you want to mix up your
attacks, and stay unpredictable. One of the main reasons that
Sophitia is such an excellent pressure fighter is the fact that
many of her quick attacks will stagger blocking opponents.
Here is a list of suggested moves to use at various ranges:
LONG RANGE
uf+K M,M 16,23
A good advancing move that often baits your opponent into
attacking, making them vulnerable to a follow up K (back flip).
QCF
Sophitia's bread and butter, this move is great for
advancing. Most of Sophitia's flexibility comes from her QCF
moves. QCF+B is fast, and great for interrupting attacks.
QCF+B~A,A,K looks impressive, but if you miss the initial hit,
you are wide open in the air. The extra attacks can keep you too
high in the air to be hit initially though.
At far distance, the double crouch dash motion is
excellent. It moves you quite far, and during the second part
of her double dash, she crouches very low, which I suspect will
avoid many middle attacks.
The crouch dash can also be executed from a crouch or while
Guard-buffered, allowing for great flexibility.
MEDIUM/LONG RANGE
QCF,n,B M 34
Good range and juggles, but beware of lag time after this
move, as well as a very interruptible execution time.
f,[f]+B+K,A,B M,H,M 21,17,26
This move should not be used at closer than medium range.
There is too much time in which Sophitia spins around to deliver
the first shield hit, allowing it to be interrupted pretty
easily. It does have pretty good range however. This move is
also more useful from the 8WR.
QCF,[f]
Holding the joystick forward after a crouch dash seems to
put Sophitia into the 8WR. Tacking on a kick after the run
starts is a nice way to sneak in a sliding attack.
MEDIUM RANGE
f,[f]+A M 34
A good advancing attack that staggers when blocked, and has
a chance of catching side-steppers as well.
db+A,A L,M 23,36
A nice move that hits quite often, but people quickly learn
to expect this move. Do not overuse.
b+A,A,A H,L,M 23,21,36
This combo is great at slightly closer than medium range.
Most people have trouble defending against the low attack. Mix
up with b+A,B to keep them guessing.
b+A,B H,M 23,42
A good combo, with the second hit staggering if blocked,
and a fairly fast recovery time. It can also be used to set
people up for the b+A,A,A Cutlass Europa combo.
f,[f]+B M 34
A standard juggle starter with good range, it is very easy
to interrupt, so do not overuse. There is also a significant
recovery time.
b+B M 35
One of her best medium range attacks. Good range, quick
execution, advances you toward them, and staggers when blocked.
This move is very linear, and can be side-stepped if they know
it is coming, so mix this move up with other medium range
attacks.
b,[b]+B M 24
A good move to mix in with b+B. It has a faster initial hit
time, but does not advance you towards your opponent as much.
Use at medium range, or when you expect your opponent to charge
you.
QCF+B M 43,33
This attack is so flexible it can work at almost any range.
uf+K,A,B M,M,L,M 16,23,19,36
A good combo to use at medium range. Useful as a finisher
after a series that pushes you back to medium range. Good to mix
up with QCF+B to keep them guessing.
A+K,K M 34
This move works well as a keep-away attack. It has a fairly
long wind-up, but can hit high or middle, depending on if you
use the follow-up K or not. It also kicks in a circular motion,
so it stops most side-steppers. Use at medium to medium-close
range.
B+K M 36
This is a nice move to use at slightly greater than medium
range. It causes Sophitia to leap toward the opponent, which
should avoid low attacks. It also performs a slight axis shift
that will avoid straight thrusting attacks. The follow-up B
thrust is very fast as well. If you are going for style,
change-up into the B+K,B~A,A,K Temperance Judgement.
b,[b]+B+K M 54
This move has good range and excellent damage, staggers
when blocked, but has a significant recovery time. If Soul
Charged, it is Unblockable, and the move is quite useful from
the 8WR.
(WS) B+K M 24
This move has a bit more range than the (WS) K, and is
pretty useful when mixed in with (WS) K. Execution time is a bit
longer.
Also, after Sophitia blocks a low attack, or crouches under
an high attack or throw.
MEDIUM-CLOSE/CLOSE RANGE
A,K H,L 12,18
A good move to use against people who do not like to block
low. Mix up with B,K to keep them guessing. It should leave you
at about medium range after the execution.
d+A SM 12
Great for dropping into a crouch. The attack is fast, and
recovers very quickly. It hits SM, so it should be used as an
interrupting attack, or as part of a pressure series.
QCF+A,A M,L 35,37
After Sophitia blocks an high or middle attack.
B,K M,H 15,15
A good mix-up move with A,K. The kick hits high, but
staggers.
u+B M 38
Use to jump over low attacks, and advance a bit (uf+B).
f+B M 29
This is an excellent quick little stab. It has the
advantage of staggering, and has very little recovery time.
d+B,B SM,M 20,41 (20,33)
This seems to catch a lot of people. If you are already in
a crouch, df+B,B. Can also switch into the d+B,B~A,A,K Guardian
Judgement. d+B alone will leave you in a crouch.
db+B M 17
This move comes out quick, but unlike the similar looking
b+B, it recovers in a crouch. It also does not advance you, and
has a significant recovery time.
QCF+B M 43 (33)
When the QCF is Guard-buffered, the Angel Strike is nearly
instant. It makes a good return strike when blocking an
attacker's combo.
K~B M 33
Another great keep away/buy distance/time move. Sophitia
does a back flip and kicks oncoming opponents. Good against the
quicker in-close fighters. Use to discourage rushers as well.
You should be left at about medium range after this move.
d+K L 11
Also good for dropping into a crouch. It hits low, so
better allows for follow-up middle attacks. It has a bit less
range than d+A, and recovers a slight bit slower.
df+A+B M,M 14,39
This is a very useful move. It has a fast execution time,
and decent reach. It is a good keep-away move, and the second
hit will stagger blocking opponents. It also makes an excellent
juggle follow-up, since you can usually get both hits in.
(WS) K M,M 15,15
Great for attacking and staying on top of your opponent.
The second hit staggers, and the attack advances you, keeping
you in their face.
(Note: The following section is co-written by Darkman
and Gamera.)
"Ground Attacks"
Many upwards vertical attacks that normally don't hit low
can hit a knocked-down enemy. Example: Sophie's df+B Grace Heaven
(M 24). However, most of these attacks do 16-24 points damage.
Sophie's attacks that probably hit a knocked-down enemy and do
more than 30 points damage include:
d,df,f+A,A M,L 35,37
d,df,f,d,df,f+A,A M,L 35,37
df+A+B M,M 14,39

"The d,df,f motion"
Disclaimer: This may depend on the looseness of the
stick.
The player may replace the d,df,f motion by the d,f or
[d],f motion. For example, to execute her d,df,f+B Angel Strike
crouch-dash and thrust, instead of d,df,f+B, input d,f+B or
[d],f+B. Sometimes her d,df,f+B comes out; sometimes her f+B
comes out.
The success rate of this trick is higher with a stiff stick
than with a loose stick. Also, the d,n,f and [d],n,f motions
(reportedly) can't replace the d,df,f motion. That is, don't
neutral or release the stick between d and f.
The player may (reportedly) replace the d,db,b motion by
the d,b or [d],b motion, but I didn't verify it.
This trick (reportedly) worked in Tekken 3.
"The Unblockable"
Disclaimer: This may depend on the looseness of the
stick.
To execute her b,[b]+B~A Heaven's Gate (no relation to the
suicidal cult) Unblockable, the player may input
(while b,b) B~A
Sometimes her Unblockable comes out; sometimes her B~A
Nasty Impale comes out. Fortunately, B~A executes only one Nasty
Impale. Her full Nasty Impale is B~A,B,B,B.
3.2 Lizardman
(Note: The following section is written by Gamera.)
CLOSE RANGE
d,df,f+A,A
After Lizardman blocks an high or middle attack.
d+B,B
Good knock-back. Can Ring Out enemy.
d,df,f+B
Good knock-back. Can Ring Out enemy.
db+K
Fast low attack. Faster than db+A. Can evade enemy's high
and middle attacks. Can follow-up with f+A,B, or B+K, or
f,[f]+B+K.
B+K,B
Good knock-back. Can Ring Out enemy.
(WS) K,K,K
Good damage when hits as counter hit.
(WS) B+K
After Lizardman blocks a low attack, or crouches under an
high attack or throw.
G+A
Exchanges positions with enemy. Can Ring Out enemy.
d,db,b+B+K
Good damage.

In a Replay where the winner will RO the loser, and the player
taps K to shift the camera to the loser, the camera angle will
stay above ground level. It doesn't follow the loser into the
water.
If the winner pounces after the loser, the winner maintains her
attack pose when she's sinking underwater. The winner only
fumbles if she lands on the edge of the ring after her pounce,
and she falls off the ring. Anyhow, during the winner's victory
animation, both the winner and the loser re-appear in the ring.
In the opening demo, the Narrator says:
"Transcending history and the world, a tale of souls and
swords, eternally retold."
When the player wins a round, the Narrator says:
"This victory strengthens the soul of (Sophitia)."
When the player loses a round, the Narrator says:
"(Sophitia) is seriously wounded, but her soul still
burns."
In Stage 7, before Round 1, the Narrator says:
"Now two souls are fiercely entangled."

4.3 Comments
Disclaimer: The following is witnessed in the international
version. The Japanese version may vary.
After Sophie's G+A, a female enemy still falls backwards
and a male enemy falls forwards. The metallic sound effect is
also present.
(In SE, the last boss Soul Edge was male. In SC, don't know
about Edge Master and Inferno. One of my favourite SE Sophie
combos was G+A, df+B,B,B,B, then uf+B.)
[981112]
In SE and SC, after the winner KO the loser, the winner can
humiliate the loser by attacking him while he's falling.
(I usually throw the falling loser to appreciate Sophitia's
throws.)
In SE and SC, after the winner RO the loser, the winner can
pounce after the loser and RO herself. In SC, the loser's body
disappears outside the ring, but re-appears in the ring during
the winner's victory pose. In SE, the loser's body landed on the
bottom of the stage, even in Soul Edge's seemingly bottomless
stage. But in Li Long's stage, the loser's shadow (not body)
moved very quickly to the edge of the stage.
(BTW, also in SE, my friends and I tested where a chara's
weapons would land after that chara was disarmed.)
In SE and SC, the characters have TO (Time Over) poses when
the timer reaches 00. In SC, seems the winner can humiliate the
loser by attacking the loser during the loser's TO pose. In SE,
the winner's victory animation might cause the winner's weapon
to hit the loser, but it had no effect on the loser.
(Ach. I haven't seen Sophitia's TO pose. BTW, in SE, when
unarmed, all characters had the same TO pose. When armed, all
characters have different TO poses.)
In SC, during the replay, holding the stick in any
direction causes the winner to glow (flash) at the end of her
victory pose. The player can combine this with holding the
buttons to choose the winner's victory pose.
Lastly, the Pantsu Code does NOT work. (T_T)

I don't know if the days of year and a half are too
long or too short to admire a person.
But I composed this melody with all my love for him.
When I completed this melody, I made up my mind.
I must confess to him my love.

Me, a Warrior of Leda?
I flew over the land of Ashanty, to reach to my stolen
melody.
Let me return to my own world.
Ringhum, Yoni, please help me!
I shall never let it take the Heart of Leda!
