The Corolla and Delta are, in my humblest opinion, one of the best cars in the game. They are
great fun to play, thanks to their sensitive steering and they CAN go very fast. It's harder
to do than with any other 4WD-car, except for Ford Escort maybe.

I am writing this guide, cos driving Corolla and Delta is quite different from the 'big' 4WD-
cars (Mitsubishi Lancer, Subaru Impreza, Toyota Celica and Ford Escort). Plus Corolla and
Delta are 4WD-cars so I have to cover them, anyways :-) Just kidding, I really enjoy playing
them both.

Note though, this is not a drive through for the two cars. I will describe, however, how
particular corners (key corners) have to be taken. For a total drivethrough, I suggest you
read the Impreza Guide.

With this guide I hope to encourage more players to drive Corolla and Delta. And to help
existing Delta and Corolla players to get better times.

Best regards,

JAPAN NOW!

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Expert Japanese SR2-players SSZ and KKG are the best Corolla and Delta players respectively.
These players are truly an inspiration.

Here are their times:

SSZ, with Toyota Corolla - Total Time: 4'00"44, Potential Time: 4'00"03

Desert: 56"96
Mountain: 1'01"14
Snowy: 57"14
Riviera: 1'04"79

KKG, with Lancia Delta - Total Time: 4'00"25, Potential Time: 3'59"77

Desert: 56"89
Mountain: 1'01"04
Snowy: 56"98
Riviera: 1'04"86

COROLLA AND DELTA COMPARED TO THE OTHER 4WD-CARS

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The first thing you will notice is that Delta and Corolla can go sideways much more easier
than the big 4WD cars. Where with e.g. Impreza you have turn the steering-wheel half way to
make the turn, the Corolla can manage it with turning the wheel one third of the way. This
may seem odd at first, but play with Corolla or Delta more often and you'll get used to it.
It's a matter of driving taste.

Because of the sensitive steering you must try to keep the steering to a minimum. Ofcourse
this goes for all cars, but it goes double for Corolla and Delta. The cars can start sliding
very easily, so it's easy to lose speed and time.

Both cars have great acceleration. They beat every 4WD car in this deparment, except maybe
for Mitsubishi Lancer. For the first time compare with Corolla it's possible to get 11"72,
which is very fast for 4WD. Thanks to their great acceleration, it's possible to get sub
1'05"00 times with them on Riviera.

The Delta and Corolla are also smaller than the big 4WD cars (hence the name 'big'). This
helps them on hairpins a lot, especially on Riviera where there is little space to manoeuvre.
You can really throw them around the hairpins.

The major 'handicap' for the two small 4WD-cars is their maximum speed. Their top speed is a
bit lower than the other 4WD-cars. If they would go as fast as the others, then these two
cars would be the best 4WD cars in the game.

Thanks to their great grip, Corolla and Delta players can steer into turn relatively later
into turns than their 'big' 4WD-counterparts.

COROLLA AND DELTA COMPARED TO EACHOTHER

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Yes, there a few differences between Corolla and Delta. One is that the Corolla grips better on
every surface. The Delta tends to drift/slide a bit more. But Corolla can go sideways easier
than the Delta.

Another difference is that the Delta might have very slightly slower acceleration. I can't
confirm this, though.

GENERAL DRIVING TIPS

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

##########
# Starts #
##########

Since these cars are 4WD, I use the same method I use for Lancer, Impreza etc.

This is how I do it, and I am pretty sure this is the quickest starting method.

Before the start, gear shift in 1st.

3... 2... 1... GO! Full accel on 'GO!'

At 4000 RPM shift into 2nd gear, immediately into 3rd gear.

Shift to 4th gear at 190 km/h*.

*On Desert shift into 4th at 196 km/h
*On Mountain shift into 4th at 194 km/h

########################
# Sliding and Recovery #
########################

Recovering slides quickly is very important with these two cars. Especially on the slidey
courses Desert and Snowy.

To recover the car quickly you must countersteer. Also remember fysics! Didn't your science
teacher tell you there isn't action without reaction? If not, then you are forgiven... :-)

If you do a hard full-steer it gets harder to recover the slide (action). Because the car
will have gone sideways and to get straight again requires a similar action but in the
opposite direction (reaction). Using too much force will make it harder to recover slides.

So NEVER jerk the wheel around!!

Anecdote teaching Science 101, hehe! <Kidding>

To do a good recovery you have to make a small jab in the opposite direction you have
steered in. I call it jab, since I am also a big Street Fighter fan :-)

For example: you are driving on Desert. On the first Left with the waterhazard, you steer
in to get close to the lefthand side fence. You'll probably have the steeringwheel turned
about halfway to the left, I think. As you exit the turn, slowy get the steeringwheel in
neutral position. When you have actually cleared, do a quick jab about 1/5 or less to the
opposite direction (jab to the right side). This jab will help you find grip again, allowing
you to accelerate again and recover the slide quickly.

Experiment with different timing of the jab. Countersteering early when exiting really makes
a difference. But too early isn't good either, you might lose control over the slide making
you go wide. Just experiment and most of all have fun learning it!

#############
# Wallturns #
#############

You may have read or heard about wallturns. Yes, they are way hard to do! In theory it sounds
really simple, in practice you won't believe how hard it is. I lost a couple years of my life
thanks to wallturns :-)

Mind you: I apply wallturns only on the Snowy and Riviera hairpins.

The method is about the same for all these three hairpins.

Approach from far outside as much as possible.
Go off-accel.
Stay in 4th gear.
Full steer.
Use footbrake and handbrake to get the nose of the car on the 'sweetspot' on the wall.
After hitting it release footbrake and hang onto the handbrake, if necessary.
When exiting release the handbrake, shift back to 3rd gear and go full accel again.
Don't forget to shift into 4th gear again at 190 km/h.

Very important: the 'sweetspot' on the walls varies. On Snowy it's just behind the apex. Make
sure you really hit the wall, not just the small snowwalls/banks.

With the first hairpin on Riviera you should hit the apex. On the second Riviera hairpin it's
between the two stripes on the wall.

KEY CORNERS

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

##########
# Desert #
##########

THE BIG S-CORNER: MEDIUM RIGHT, LONG MEDIUM LEFT

Enter the grass as quickly as possible, stay close the fence. After you have just passed the
apex on the rightside, go for the Long Medium Left. Also, stay close the the left side fence.
You have to make your exit as smooth as possible.

Keep sliding to a minimum remember!

THE SECOND LAST LEFT CORNER WITH THE BIG ROCKWALL: LONG EASY LEFT

If you are really fast you will catch the 11th com car in just before this turn. Which is a
total pain!!

Try to go out-in-out as much as possible. With the com car it's impossible to go from far
out-in-out. It's in the way. But usually you can do a middle-in-out.

Go very tight along this corner, driving on the grass in the innerbend isn't bad. You are
driving the shortest path and speed loss is virtually non-existant here.

FINISH

You have to get on the tarmac as quickly as possible.

############
# Mountain #
############

K-RIGHT, K-RIGHT

Important is that you have set up nicely before this turn. So the turn with the narrow bridge
is important too!

When you pass the ad-sign on the leftside fence, you should start steering into the first
K-Right. The method is to steer into the turn very slowly. This way you keep you speed up.
Slowy countersteer to setup far left again for the second K.

HAIRPIN RIGHT

Get the left wheels of the car on the grass-strip. Just after the navigator says 'Caution
Hairpin Right!' you should go off-accel, do fullsteer and give a good tap on the footbrake.
Keep the car in 4th gear, shift back to 3rd after clearing the hairpin. Into 4th again at
~190 km/h.

MEDIUM LEFT, MEDIUM RIGHT (S-CORNER)

Approaching from the right, try go get drive over the grass on the leftside, near the wall.
When you get there, go off-accel for a split second, go full accel again to exit. Don't run
the grass on the right side.

OPEN HAIRPIN LEFT

Again like the first hairpin, get the wheels on the grass. This time the right side wheels.
Go off-accel, keep 4th gear, full steer, tap the footbrake very shortly, just a small tap.
It's possible to exit at about 180~183 km/h. You don't have to shift back to third.

#########
# Snowy #
#########

THE SERIES OF MEDIUM TURNS: LONG MEDIUM LEFT, MEDIUM RIGHT, MEDIUM RIGHT

Try to take the first turn (Long Medium Left) in-in-out. Yes, it's possible! Very hard,
though, because you have to drive over the snowbanks and keep control. Also make sure you
don't hit the real wall. This will slow you down.

The following Medium Right, drive over the snowbank-apex. After this one, make sure you go
position the car far left and drive the snowbank-apex.

LONG K-LEFT

Position the car far right, make sure you don't drive the snowbank here. Driving over it
will make you go straight, it works like a ditch or rail...

After the navigator finishes his pacenote, off-accel and full steer to the left. Try to
get on the snowbank on the innerbend. Keep 4th gear here.

HAIRPIN RIGHT

Position the far left, ofcourse. Off-accel, keep 4th gear, use handbrake and footbrake to
hit the apex. After hitting the wall, release footbrake, hold onto the handbrake if
necessary. After clearing the hairpin, shift to 3rd gear.

LAST S-CORNER: LONG MEDIUM LEFT, MEDIUM RIGHT

Drive from middle-in-out with gentle steer, with about half steer. You must drive the
snowtrail on the left, followed by the snowtrail on the right. Make sure your slide is as
small as possible.

###########
# Riviera #
###########

On the long start/finish bend always stay on the rightside, even when approaching the first
Medium Right.

HAIRPIN RIGHT, FIRST HAIRPIN

Off-accel, keep 4th gear, use foot- and handbrake to hit the apex of the hairpin. After
hitting it, release footbrake and hold onto handbrake if necessary. When exiting, full accel
and shift to 3rd gear.

HAIRPIN RIGHT, SECOND HAIRPIN

Do the same as with the first hairpin, but hit the wall on just before the second stripe on
the wall. You may not know there is one. But if you have messed up your attempt at a good
time, I suggest you drive slowly near the second hairpin to see the second stripe!

FINAL WORDS

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Most people who play Corolla or Delta for the first time find the handling of the car too
twitchy. Subsequently, they chose an other car (306 anyone?). Well, I think the twitchiness
is an asset. It forces you to drive controlled, even disciplined. Since it is so easy to start
sliding, you must always be on your toes when driving. That's what I like about Corolla and
Delta.

Next to Stratos, I think the Corolla and Delta are the hardest cars to drive in Sega Rally 2.
But I think most people don't know that the Delta and Corolla can go very fast, which is a
shame. Also, most people aren't interested in driving a particular car, they just wanna get a
quick time on the board. This, I think is a shame...

Take care and have fun with the Toyota Corolla WRC and Lancia Delta HF Integrale,
