1      -  -  INTRODUCTION

Dance simulation games are very popular nowadays, and quickly
became an important sector in the arcade and videogame industry.
Back to 1998, when Konami released Dance Dance Revolution on the
arcades, Japanese gamers was truly shocked with this new genre of
games and Japan was quickly taken by the DDR fever.
The popularity of this kind of games is explained by a series
of factors, including the simple but deep design of this game, which
combines a game with rules that are easy to understand, dexterity
and MUSIC. This clever concept makes that virtually everyone feels
confident enough to give it a try. Others factors including that is
a game that actually draws the attention of outside audience making
this a real crowd pleaser and some people see the game also as a
healthy exercise.
Andamiro, a Korean software company, produce the Pump It Up
series of arcade machines. Pump It Up is an arcade that appears from
nowhere and quickly became very popular for those who play that kind
of machines. This FAQ is related of the Season Evolution version of
the Pump It UP (Pump: the SE for short).

2      -  -  UPDATES

     Version 0.2 - First version: November 8, 2001 - Just info
thrown away without much thought.
     Version 0.8 - November 21, 2001 - The basic layout for the
version 1.0 is made, but there is still much room for improvement
(always has....)
     Version 1.0 - January 12, 2003 - Finally released, this is the
first of my 4 pump FAQ's. Wait for the collection, extra and rebirth
FAQ's.
     Version 1.2 - May 21, 2003 - New things added and some
correction were being made. Nothing really groundbreaking. I am
pretty satisfied with how things on this FAQ turned out.
Version 1.25 - January 30, 2004 - Some clean up in the text.

3      -  -  COMMANDS

     A) Commands

This FAQ is based if you know the basic rules of this kind of
games and this section is only for explaining the basic of the PUMP
pad setup.

        _____     _____ _____     _____
       /  7 /    / 9  // 7  /    /  9 /
      /____/____/____//____/____/____/
          / 5  /          / 5  /
    ____ /____/____ _____/____/____
   /  1 /    / 3  // 1  /    /  3 /
  /____/    /____//____/    /____/

OK, this is a basic layout of the pads on pump it up (well,
not really....), the 7 and 9 are red pads and 1 and 3 are blue pads.
The middle pad is yellow and have 2 foots on it.

     B) How to play

Each arrow that appears on the screen has a similar design on
the game pad (RED, BLUE and YELLOW). You must follow up the arrows
on the screen and press the pad on the exact time that reaches a
designed place. The arrows are synchronized with the song playing on
the background, so you will know when press the pad.

4      -  -  PLAY MODES

In Pump It Up: The Season Evolution there is some modes of
gameplay exclusives to this machine; some of it is traditional in
dance machines.
After the How to Play screen, these modes will appear:

     NORMAL        HARD

     DOUBLE    NONSTOP REMIX
   ( Battle )    ( Crazy )

To play the normal mode, step on the 7 button twice, to play
Hard mode, press 9 twice, to play Double mode press 1 twice, to play
Remix mode 3 twice.
The battle mode will appear if 2 players are selected and the
crazy mode will appear only via code.

     A ) NORMAL (Beginners step)

The normal is the easiest mode available, with songs with a
difficulty ranging of 1 to 6 circles. And so, this is the best mode
for beginners. There are only a few cool songs, and steps are very
low on freestyling technique. But everyone must start with
something, right? Keep practicing.

     B ) HARD (Professional step)

On this mode, things get more difficult. The easiest songs in
this mode can match the hardest songs on normal. More techniques
will be utilized. And many songs will be exclusive on this mode.
Difficulty ranging to 3 to 10 circles.

     C ) DOUBLE (Twinrole step)

The greatest mode on every dance game is the Double play mode.
You will play with the 2 sides of the pads. Much more music, great
freestyling technique and skill will be used by who plays this mode.
The first times that you play this mode can cause confusion (and
some light injuries too....^_^) but the glory of being a crowd-
pleaser is rewarding enough. Difficulty ranging to 3 to 10 stars.
For freestylers, this is the mode to get down.....

D ) NONSTOP REMIX (Ultimate step)

This mode consists of 8 songs that are full versions of songs,
or remix that combine 2 or even 3 songs. Of course, the duration of
these songs is far greater than the normal songs (mostly 2:30 of the
remix songs for the 1:30 of the normal songs). And so, you will be
very tired before the song is over if you're not used to it.

     E ) CRAZY (Stepers step)

The maniac mode of this machine is the Crazy mode. Think of
this mode as a hardest mode available, but this mode is available
only via code. Difficulty ranging to 4 to 10 skulls (but actually
this "4" skulls is much like 7 circles and 10 skulls much like 12
circles). Only for professionals or people that likes more test your
reflexes than freestyling.

     F ) BATTLE (Showdown step)

Battle mode is a 2-player mode only that wins who have the
better ratings on the end of 3 songs.
There are only 4 songs to choose per stage. The songs are
chosen randomly (except the last stage), obeying just one criteria:
The first stage are HARD songs but the easy ones (3 to 5 circles),
the second stage are HARD songs ranging to 5 to 8 circles. And the
final stage are only REMIX songs: REMIX 2, REMIX 6, REMIX 7 and
SECKS KIES remix.
On the course of the stage the player can cause "status" on
the opponent if they reach a combo of 10 or 20. This "status"
includes 4x speed, random or vanish, that gives your opponent a hard
time and to keep things frantic and fun. There are no partial
results. The final verdict only is given after the 3 songs. And you
cannot put any code on (even speed).

5      -  -  RATING / RESULTS / BONUS STAGE

     A )  The rating system

The rating system for this game is Konami standard. There are
5 grades that you can get on the game: PERFECT, GREAT, GOOD, BAD,
MISS. Perfect and great count for the combo system, but the GOOD
grade interrupts the combo but don't cause the dance gauge to drop.
BAD and MISS will cause the gauge to drop.

B ) End stage result / Game over

On the end of the stage, you will get a result for your
performance. The result will be a grade that can be S, A, B, C, D
and F (theoretically exists the E grade, but no one saw that...^_^).
If you get any grade except F, you cleared the stage. If you grade
is F, you get a stage failed and the game is over.

     S and A - " Yeah, I know U can"
     B - " OK, It's a Boo"
     C - " Hey, we need a B"
     D - " Oh, god......"
F - " Hey, why you just get up and dance, man?"

The conditions of the game over can be configured by the
arcade setup.
There is 2 ways to get a game over:

Stage failed - Your grade was insufficient to clear the stage
but you finished the song (Grade F).
"Explode" - The game ends if the dance gauge drops to 0 and
you can't even finish the song. The best condition is that only the
bonus stage "explode", but the others don't. The worst condition is
that the first stage "explodes".

     C ) Bonus Stage

The game has 3 stages on all modes, except the Non-stop remix
(that have only 2 stages) and depending of your final grade you can
get a BONUS STAGE!!!!!!, that's right one free music for you play IF
you can get a certain results on all 3 stages. The conditions for
the bonus stage are below.

NORMAL, HARD, CRAZY MODES - A or S on all stages.
DOUBLE - S on the first stage, A or S on the other 2 stages.

So, how can I get an S and A grade?

S - All grades must be Perfect or Great, OR just only one good
grade but with high combo and perfect percentage (more than 85%) of
the total score.
A - Must be less than 5% MISS of the total score.
On the 2 players mode, the conditions to get the bonus stage
are the same, but the best result of the 2 players is what the
counts for the bonus.
     Example -              Player 1    Player 2
              First stage -    S            A
              Second stage -   B            A
              Third stage -    A            F
On this example, they get the bonus stage. If any of the 2
players play the game alone they won't have earned the bonus stage.
I don't know if the conditions of the bonus stage can be
configured by the arcade setup, but is almost certain that is.

NOTE : the REMIX / BATTLE mode doesn't have a bonus stage.

6      -  -  SONG LIST / COMMENTS

After you choose a mode, the song list will appear. The list
consists on "pages" with 2 songs, to pass to another page use the 1
and 3 buttons. To choose the music to your left, step 7 twice (press
just once to preview the song), to choose the music to the right
step 9 twice.
The song list on this FAQ is divided on main songs and remixes
songs. The main songs are all songs available in all modes. The
remix songs is, obviously, only available on the remix mode.
For each music, there is the name of the music, the composer,
the modes available to play with the difficulty of that mode, and
his BPM (beats per minute) that tells if the song is fast or not.
This song list is arranged like the game.

     A ) Normal songs

       RUN TO YOU

       Song by : DJ D.O.C.
       Modes : Normal (3), Hard (4), Double (4), Crazy (5), Battle
       BPM : 132

The "Butterfly" of Pump It Up. An easy song, with a catching
tune and a chorus that sticks like glue. " Bounce with me... Bounce
with me....Bounce...Bounce...Bounce...Bounce". No wonder is ALWAYS
the first song to choose on EVERY mode.

     SUMMER OF LOVE

       Song by : Roo´Ra
       Modes : Normal (3), Hard (5), Double (7), Crazy (7) , Battle
       BPM : 125

Nice music, with a tropical feel to it. Don't be fooled by it
looks, on Hard and Crazy this song will deal a lot to learn.

     MATCHING BOYS AND GIRLS

       Song by : COOL
       Modes : Normal (4), Hard (4), Double (4), Crazy (5)
       BPM : 172

The first real fast song that everyone goes. Good to test your
reflex when you are starting on the game. The song is alright.

     KISS

       Song by :  ??????
Modes : Normal, Hard, Double, Crazy
       BPM : 142.67

I've never played this song until there was no other music on
double to play. On double this song is tricky. But the song is quite
boring.

     SAD SALSA

Song by : Baek Ji Young
Modes : Normal, Hard, Double, Crazy
       BPM : 125

Another song that I also only played on double with lack of
options. Nice song thought.

     TO BE WITH YOU

       Song by: Banya
       Modes: Normal (3)
       BPM : 124

Never played this song. On the demo mode, sometimes plays it
and it seems very, VERY boring.

       A TRAP

       Song by : Baby VOX
       Modes : Normal (3), Hard (6), Double (6), Crazy
       BPM :125.1

Most known as the mermaid song, this is an intermediary song.
Most of the people skip this song. Good for you.

     CHO RYUN

       Song by : Clon
       Modes : Normal (5), Hard (7), Double (6), Crazy
       BPM : 142.8

Most known as the vampire song, is a cool and tricky song. On
hard, it has many steps and on double, very trick as shown as the 13
13 and 97 97 steps.

     RUN

       Song by : Novasonic
       Modes : Normal (5), Hard (7), Double (7)
       BPM : 140

This Novasonic music is not that bad ( but Slam come to my
mind), and is somewhat tricky on double. With time, this is one of
the song that I liked the most, it really grow on me.

     FINAL AUDITION 2

       Song by : Banya
       Modes : Hard (6), Double (6), Crazy (6)
       BPM : 130

This is my favorite song of this machine, hands down. This is
a VERY tricky song on every single mode, not by the number of steps
but the balance of it. Perhaps you have to play 3 or more times to
get the feel of the music. Master this song is the key to endure and
beat the ultimate songs ( extravaganza and Mr. Larpus).

     NAISSANCE

       Song by : Banya
Modes : Hard (7), Double (7), Crazy, Battle
       BPM : 136

This music is a tough one, that makes you run all the time.
The song is good, much like Block rocking beats. One of the all-time
favorite songs.

     EXTRAVAGANZA

       Song by : Banya
       Modes : Hard (8), Double (9), Crazy (8), Battle
       BPM : 195

Similar to DDR Paranoia, this is a fast, merciless song that
will test your limits. On difficulty side, only loses to Mr. Larpus.
But notice that there are 2 versions of extravaganza: The SE version
and the Premiere version. The SE version is very so much harder than
the premiere version that I wonder why put 2 versions.

     TURKEY MARCH

       Song by : Banya
       Modes : Hard (7), Double (7), Crazy (6), Battle
       BPM : 150

This song can be the divisor line of good players to players
that take pump seriously. If you can clear this song,
congratulations. It's time to move on to bigger and better things.

     DISCO BUS

       Song by: Tahsannie
Modes: Normal (3), Hard (5), Crazy
       BPM : 120.2

This was the last music I've played on the SE, it was a good
song, on crazy it was real challenging.

     VISIT SEOUL

       Song by : Banya
       Modes: Hard (7), Crazy (7)
       BPM : 160

This is a song to only test your reflexes. This is a very fast
song, with fast steps. So, if you feel uncomfortable, hold on the
security bar behind you, until you confidences grow enough to play
without help.

     CLOSE YOUR EYES

       Song by : Banya
       Modes : Normal (2), Double (3)
       BPM : 105

       Never played this song.

       TELL ME

       Song by : Jinusean
       Mode : Hard (4)
       BPM :120

A cool song with some technique. If you are leaving the normal
mode, train on this and Banya´s Pumping Up, to gain some skills. I
love this song, it's a shame that only has on the Hard mode.

       NIGHTMARE

       Song by : Banya
       Modes : Normal (1), Hard (4), Double (4)
       BPM : 120

This was the first song I've ever played on the pump: the SE.
If you are new to the dance machines, this is one of the songs to
start playing.

       TO THE TOP

       Song by : 2millbionic juno
       Modes : Normal (3), Hard (5)
       BPM : 120

A cool song. If you are leaving the normal mode, train on
this. The 95 and 15 sequences are very good to get some experience.
This kind of sequences will appear a lot on other more difficult
songs.

     PUMPING UP

       Song by : Banya
       Mode : Hard (4)
       BPM: 135

A cool song. If you are leaving the normal mode, train on
this. Lots of jumping to train. Really fun song.

       PUYO PUYO

       Song by : UP
Mode : Normal, Hard, Double, Crazy
       BPM : 140.05

Everyone plays and likes this song when you are starting.

     FREE STYLE

       Song by : Banya
       Modes : Normal (2), Double (3)
       BPM : 99

This song is so cool, is almost all made for freestylers (no
kidding....). If you don't play it because the song is too easy,
play with the sudden / random trick.

     MIDNIGHT BLUES

       Song by : Banya
       Modes : Normal (2), Double (4)
       BPM : 80

Is hard to like a song THAT slow. No technique, no
freestyling, nothing, just a slow and sleepy song.

     LOVE SONG

Song by : Yoo Seung Jun
       Modes : Normal, Hard
       BPM : 118

     Normal song, nothing to add.

     SHE LIKES PIZZA

       Song by : Banya
       Modes : Hard (8), Double (8), Crazy (9), Battle
       BPM : 230

Impossible at first sight. But memorizing the steps is the key
for master this song. Play this with no 2X speed.

     CAUTION

       Song by : Thasannie
       Modes : Normal (1), Double (4)
       BPM : 110

A cool song that never tires you ear. Freestlyers can get your
ass down on the dance floor.

     CHANCE FOR PARTING

Song by : So Chan Wee
       Modes : Normal, Hard, Crazy
       BPM : 132

The " Farewell " song is nice and heavy Latin song. It has
some popularity among the players.

PARTING WITH HER (the cyberwoman song)

Song by : Kim Hyung Jung
       Modes : Hard (5), Double (6), Battle
       BPM : 140

     Very cool and tricky song.

     AESO

       Song by : GOD
       Modes : Normal (2), Double (5)
       BPM : 106

This is for the freestylers to practice his skills on the
double mode.  VERY cool song.

       WE ARE

       Song by : Deux
       Modes : Hard (5), Double (5)
       BPM : 115.9

Practicing this song for freestyling, the possibilities are
endless with this song. Perhaps the most popular song of the PUMP
family.

     OK!,OK!

       Song by : DJ D.O.C.
       Modes : Normal (3), Double (5)
       BPM : 130

Much technique for a level 3 song on normal with the 797979 on
sequence. And easy to record the steps, so the best choice to play
with the Mirror trick or the NO Arrows trick on the double mode.

     CORDIALITY

       Song by : Novasonic
       Modes : Normal (3), Hard (5), Double (5)
       BPM : 136

Everyone seems to like this song. But is a great music to
practice jumping. On the hard mode 80% of the song is jumping.

     Mr. LARPUS

       Song by : Banya
       Modes : Normal (6), Hard (10), Double (10), Crazy (10)
       BPM : 190

The hardest song on every mode. This is a frustrating music
that will push you to the limit of the insanity, but you will be
back for more sooner or later. You start saying " Mark my words,
this time I beat this sucker " and so, 2 minutes later you are
tired, sweating and shouting "this is &¨%$$% impossible" with the
urging need to break the machine in very small pieces.

     OH! ROSA

       Song by : Banya
       Modes : Normal (5), Hard (7), Double (7)
       BPM : 148

Very cool and tricky song on all modes, pay attention on the
background story, poor Rosa........

     FIRST LOVE

       Song by : Banya
       Modes : Normal (2), Hard (4), Double (4), Crazy (7)
       BPM : 106

This music suffers of the "Run to you" syndrome, that other
songs also suffer ( Aeso, Tell me). First love is a VERY cool song
that is ignored because is too easy and without things to do. Yeah,
try this on Crazy.....^_^

MU HON ( the samurai song)

       Song by : Banya
       Modes : Normal (5), Hard (8), Double (8), Crazy (6)
       BPM : 136

If the difficulty scares you, you're wasting a chance to
impress your friends. This japanese-themed song is easier than it
seems. Still hard, but not impossible.

     BETRAYER

     Song by : Banya
       Modes : Normal (2), Hard (4), Double (7), Crazy (6)
       BPM : 92

The last song of the play list is a cool song and so pays your
respects playing this song once more. Incredible cool song.

     B)  Non-stop Remix songs

REMIX 1 - Tell me, Tell me (4)
               Forever love

Song by : S#arp, Fin K.L., Hans Band

     Song by : Sechs Kies
     BPM : 102-150

7      -  -  SECRETS AND CODES

If this 33 songs and 4 modes weren't enough to satisfy your
pump addiction, how about spice things a little? With this tricks a
whole new level of gameplay will open for you. The tricks should be
made with the correct order to work.
NOTE : The codes don't work on the BATTLE mode.

     A ) Gameplay Tricks

     2X arrow speed - 55755595 ( Great when beginning on hard )
     4X arrow speed - 55355755
     8X arrow speed - 55153555
No arrows - 79579579 ( Only if you truly knows a LOT the song)
Sudden - 55975135  ( It makes the game harder )
     Random - 51535957
Vanish - 55795315 ( The beat will fade as it's going up)
Sudden / Random - 79513579 ( Very cool trick, but be
careful...)
     Vanish / Random - 17931793
Mirror - 55159357  ( For doing a song looking at the crowd)
     Union  - 13573159 ( A 2-players double - Double Mode ONLY)
     Syncho - 55797955 ( The 2 players will have the same steps - 2
players ONLY)
     Anti-syncro  - 55131355 ( The 2 players have mirrored steps -
2 players ONLY)
Disable trick - 55555555  ( Takes off any code that you put
on)

     B ) Crazy

As you can see, on the mode select screen, the crazy mode is
absent. That's because it's only available via code (unlike the
Premiere and rebirth edition of Pump it UP).

CRAZY - on the mode selection screen - 51535153
The crazy will appear on the place of the Non-stop remix.

     C) Remix tricks

This codes are only valid for the Non-stop remix mode. And
remember, once you put those codes, you cannot take them off. Even
with the disable trick, plus there is no sign that will show you
that the trick worked, only a "click" noise.

     Remix Double - 17159395
Play the remix songs in double to practice
     Remix Crazy - 51535153
The remix songs will be much harder.

8     -  -  PUMP IT UP VS DDR

NOTE : this section expresses the opinion of the writer. The
writer is, by no means, affiliated with Andamiro or Konami.
Since of the dawn of the dance machines, Konami has been the
only one to stand up and offer new products to the dance people.
Jaleco (now TDDJJ) tried and launched the Stepping Stage, but it
wasn't well received on the Japanese market, and the poor financial
situation of Jaleco contributed with this situation. But as weird as
it may seem, others majors arcade and console developers restrain
himself to enter this vast and lucrative market. Mostly because
Konami sued anyone that tries to make a game like that pledging
copyright of the CONCEPT. And so, an unknown Korean software company
called Andamiro came in and released the Pump it Up series.
Now, the 2 companies are the only companies releasing updates
to their machines and so what are the advantages and disadvantages
of each one of the series?

VISIBILITY AND MARKETING - The most important thing when you compare
2 different games is actually see and play the game for you to
compare. Chances are that you've never heard about the pump it up
series because there is no visibility enough for Andamiro, the
company. DDR and Konami is a well-stabilized brand of quality games
and plus, DDR is also available on the Playstation system. Andamiro
is still an Asian market based company and so find a machine to play
is somewhat difficult ( but this is gradually changing). There are
only 2 machines for the international market ( the Premiere machines
) and outside the arcades there is only a PC version that only sells
on the asian market. And so, Andamiro relies on his huge home market
(Korea), and with his fan base outside Korea. Pump has become a huge
cult game, that means, if I was you, start spreading to your friends
that PUMP is the best arcade machine ever, that We Are is the best
song ever and DJ DOC is way better than DJ Marky ^_^.

ABOUT THE GAME -

PADS DISPOSITION - If you played before DDR ( + shaped - 4 buttons)
and played PUMP ( X shaped - 5 buttons) afterwards, like I did, is a
little frightening this configuration for newbies. But after I've
played enough, I find the pump configuration somewhat more
conformable, especially on the double mode. Of course, one button
makes the game more challenging and variable than DDR. Of course the
DDR pads is much easier to learn, so I recommend start with DDR and
so going to PUMP.

THE MACHINE ITSELF - At first glance, the 2 machines is equally the
same. The screen, the displacement of the sound system, even the
lights are the same. The only (beneficial) change is that the
protection bars behind you when you're playing on DDR is like a U
upside down, and PUMP is like an R and so, for the freestylers, this
R configuration is beneficial cuz you can interlace your leg on the
bars to do some tricks ( not that I advise to do it so) and being
upside down, one hand holding the bars, one hand on the pad of
choice ( possible but tricky).

SOUND - The most important aspect on a music game is the music. The
quality of the sound is equal to both. Advantage goes to the pump
machine that doesn't have that boring DDR commented talking "Cool",
or other things like that, pump have only the song.

SONGS - The meat of PUMP is the song. This is the only aspect of the
game where PUMP truly kicks DDR ass. I've had serious restrictions
of the DDR songs, they are all a bunch of dance and J-pop shit, when
some songs truly shines like the old, licensed songs or some quality
songs like Dan Dairan. But when I think on DDR songs, aberrations
like " Oh Nick, please not so quick " or J-pop like "Pink Dinosaur"
comes quickly to mind and plus, I get the feeling that almost all
the songs are made JUST for the DDR game and so all music feels the
same. Unfortunately, the DDR series is very weak song-wise to the
others series of dancing games, including own Konami BeatMania and
Guitar Freaks.
There are 2 aces on andamiro sleeve to the PUMP game: First is
the healthy variable style of the songs. Hip-hop, techno, drum
n´bass, rock, trance, salsa, latin themed, boy band style, dance,
house, classical and even can-can. These give each song personality
and are impossible you don't have a (good) favorite song. Second,
most of the artists featured on pump are top-ratings artists on
Korea, and so deal a greater quality to the songs.
Another plus aspect on the PUMP is that all songs are in
Korean, .....what, lemme finish. On DDR, all the songs are in
English, which virtually you can understand what crap he/she is
talking about, and IS crap, see all J-pop lyrics that the crappiness
ratings go up. And with the pump the chances are that you keep
mumbling a particular song but with no clue to what the singer are
talking about.

GRAPHICS - When I think about the DDR graphics, poor polygonal
dancers on cool backgrounds come to my mind. This was adequate on
98, and until the 5th Mix there was no substantial changes of the
graphical engine. PUMP graphics is a hi-res, aliasing free anime
background fest, and sometimes a particular song shows a complete
history for that song. The graphics is really very well done. And
DDR MAX ( the latest release on the DDR series )has a graphical
style much like PUMP, which means that Konami learned something. But
PUMP suffers from it PC-ish architecture: on pump SE sometimes has
massive framerate loss for few moments (mostly on 2 players game)
that is always causes you to miss a step. And pump EXTRA suffers
from long loading times ( up to 20 seconds on some remix songs), and
lock-ups on some situations.

DIFFICULTY - Pump is, without doubt, the most hard dance game ever.
5 pads and an unforgiving rating system, that easily gives a stage
failed to a new player because he/she missed 15 steps of 50 steps of
a song in the normal mode. DDR is much more easy to people that is
starting ( and trust me, there are people that ARE still starting on
this whole dancing stuff).

What I wanna say with all this?  Competition is good and healthy for
the market. Both companies learned with each other and the most
beneficial is the final consumer. Perhaps now the Beat Mania series
receives some serious competition now? Or else, who wants to see an
Squaresoft or Namco dancing game?
