I'm just waiting for SoulCalibur2 to come out in the arcades, and
I've recently been playing this game in London. Thanks to Konami
for bringing out cool games =)
The game is called Police 911 in the US and Police 24/7 in the UK
(I'll refer to it as Police 911 from now on as it's easier to type).
I started playing it when I found out that Konami were doing
'Internet challenges' for prizes.
Game mechanics
==============
Police 911 incorporates a 'revolutionary' new aspect into lightgun
games, in that two sensors located above left and above right on a
suspended frame detect whether you're crouching, or standing, or
leaning left or right. One important thing to remember when moving
around is that you have to stay within the boundaries of the floormat.
What this means to the game is that you can peer around corners to
shoot enemies, duck/sidestep bullets (can you say 'Matrix'?), and
generally have more control over the visible playing field than other
similar-tech games. One of the things you can't do however is duck
behind obstacles and hold your gun over the obstacle to shoot enemies.
If you can't see it on screen, you can't shoot it.
As an aid to aiming however, most enemies have a small red circle
which highlights their weapon. So even if you do sidestep behind a
defensive object, you can always track their motion by the red circle.
Gun reloads occur slowly when you hide behind obstacles (sometimes a
guide arrow will pop up telling you which way to hide). You'll be able
to see the cartridge reload bullet by bullet until it 'clicks',
signifying a full load. You can interrupt this action at any point by
just unhiding.
Enough about actual physical mechanics - down to game mechanics.
It's important to remember that by moving your body from side to side,
the angle you have on enemies changes. Use this to gain more favorable
angles so you can down enemies faster. The reason why this is so
important in Police 911 is that when an enemy is 'killed', for a few
moments, their falling body can still obstruct your next shot to enemies
behind them, effectively shielding your next opponent from your bullets -
giving them more time to shoot, and possibly kill you.
Never stand still if you can help it. Enemies onscreen will target you
much less accurately if you're constantly moving. This is _the_ most
important point to remember in this game. If you stand still, your chances
of getting shot are greatly increased! Learn to move, track and fire
at the same time. Once you've done that, learn the locations of all the
enemies so you can remove them a lot faster.
There are two ways you can die on Police 911: Lose all your lives, or run
out of time. Of the two, if you're good - you're more likely to run out
of time before you complete the game.
The game is broken up into 8 stages, within each stage, there are what I'll
call 'sub-stages'. After each sub-stage, your lowly police officer will
take steps towards promotion to a higher rank. At every rank, you'll gain
benefits:
Officer?
v
v
Senior Officer? +5 Sec
v
v
Captain +10 Sec
v
v
Deputy Inspector
v
v
Inspector +1 Life
v
v
Deputy Chief +3 Lives
v
v
Deputy Commissioner
v
v
Commissioner +100 Lives
The 'v' is an advancement towards the next rank. Each v is
obtained by completion of each sub-stage. Shooting a non-enemy
results in a drop of 2 ranks, and being shot resets your ranking
and uses up a life.
Each non-enemy death results in a loss (due to animation) of about
2 seconds, and getting shot yourself results in about 3 or 4 seconds
of lost time.
Besides being shot, the other way you can die is by being run over
by moving vehicles. This occurs in 3 places in the game; the first
is in the 5th stage (in the underground parking lot), the other
two are final bosses in a van and a lorry respectively
When you appear from death, enemies are frozen for about 2 seconds...
use this time to kill them.
Tips and Stage Info
===================
I guess it'd be easier if I broke this up into sub-stages, stages
and locations. Each stage is broken up into sub-stages, and the
end of a stage is where you get a status update (bullets used etc.),
and end of locations are where you meet the bosses.
This is going to be a little jumbled, cos it's all from memory and
paths through stages aren't set, but they aren't determined by
different actions either (unlike, say House of the Dead, where if
you fail to shoot something, you might take a different path through
the game...) - in order to get past each sub-stage, you either have to
kill all the enemies on that sub-stage, or take so long (hiding maybe)
that it just moves you on automatically.
One last thing: You can shoot enemies even before the red circles
appear - good times to do this are when you've just arrived at a sub-stage
because you can kill them off a lot sooner. Take out enemies with machine
guns first!
Once a separate path has been taken, it continues on to the next 'node'.
I'll try and cover these if I remember them; paths are denoted by
<number><letter>. 5a, 6a, 7a is a distinct path, and 5b, 6b, 7b is
another distinct path.
SS stands for sidestep, and is just an action I take to kill things/
avoid them better. You may have better approaches to the same solution.
In a bar:
--------
This is pretty straightforward, set stages are:
1. 6 enemies: 2 appear at a time.
2. 4 enemies: 2 on left (sidestep left), 2 on right
3. 4 enemies: 1 on right partially hidden, other 3 are okay
4. 4 enemies: 2 at a time.
5a. 3 enemies: (SS right), shoot 2, (SS left) shoot 1
6a. 3 enemies: shoot one at back, then one on right, SS left for last
7a. 4 enemies: shoot them as they appear, SS left for last
8. 5 enemies: SS right and take out the first 3 from right to left,
SS left and take out the last 2.
9. 4 enemies: Shoot enemy on right, SS left, shoot nearest, then one
one on far right, SS right, shoot remaining
End Stage
Outside in street:
------------------
1. 4 enemies: shoot guy behind postbox, SS right, shoot guy behind
running girl, shoot guy appearing on right, shoot last.
2. 5 enemies: shoot guy on car above hostage, shoot left, then right,
then two that appear
3. 4 enemies: SS up-right (tiptoes =), shoot middle, left, downleft
and final.
4. 4 enemies: Shoot far central before circle appears, then next,
two step in middle centre, middle left-of-centre.
5. 4 enemies: Shoot leg, SS left, shoot two more, shoot other leg.
6. 5 enemies: Shoot boss if you can (end location) haven't
succeeded yet.
Failing that, kill the rest, watch out for guy at top
7. 3 enemies: (Crouch), kill the boss if you can (end location)
Failing that, kill the 3 under the truck.
8. 5 enemies: Shoot the boss when he appears, or just kill the enemies,
_then_ kill the boss. Watch out for the one on the cab.
End Location
In Car:
-------
Shoot the window twice to get a clear shot at the other car.
1. 3 enemies: Watch out for incoming bullets. Don't rattle off loads
of bullets. Use single shots carefully to take out
the driver. Ignore the others if you can. Duck to reload.
2. 3 enemies: As above.
3. 3 enemies: As above.
End stage
Underground parking:
--------------------
1. 3 enemies: SS right as you shoot
2. 4 enemies: SS left, take out first 3 from left to right. Stay left
to shoot final one that appears behind the right corner.
3.
?. 4 enemies: SS to avoid car, track enemies by circles so you can
reappear and kill them.
?. 4 enemies: SS left to hide before you shoot, then SS right to take
them out.
?. 7 enemies: Keep SS left and right to hide behind the wall to reload
End stage
Outside amongst the cars:
-------------------------
1. 4 enemies: Shoot right, on van, left behind car window, right
2. 4 enemies: Shoot top of van, center, behind window, wait for the
guy to run out from the right and shoot as he's moving
3. 5 enemies: Top of van on right, centre far van, approaching guy from
left with machine gun ... erm...
4. 4 enemies: Shoot one at top right on shop, 2 behind post box, and
I think one appears from right
5. 5 enemies: SS right, kill 3 from right to left, SS left, shoot one
on left of far van, wait for other to appear on right of
far van.
6. 1 enemy: Boss appears driving van, if you can kill him here, kudos.
Shoot single enemy
7. 3 enemies: Boss appears again in van, easiest points to kill him are:
When he bumps into left car, when he stops reversing, or
when he drives at you.
Enemies should be killed left, right, centre.
End Location
In alleyway:
------------
1. 5 enemies: 3 on top of lorry (centre, left, right). Two appear on
left, then right of car (you may need to SS right for last)
2a. 4 enemies: Shoot two (feet, head), SS right, shoot one in warehouse,
SS back to centre, shoot feet of hiding enemy.
3a. 5 enemies: Learn where these next 3 are so you take them out as soon
as they appear. Take out one that appears on left lorry,
then one that appears on right lorry.
4a. 6 enemies: This is my method, there are lots: SS left lots, shoot
leftmost, then shooting right -> one behind left car door,
then one behind right car door. SS back to centre, take out
single, SS left, take out approaching enemy, SS right, take
out remaining.
5a. 5 enemies: Annoying iron fence thing that protects them sometimes!
SS right, take out first, then the one behind the fence.
SS right some more, take out approaching guy, then another
guy behind fence, then new guy with machine gun.
6. 5 enemies: SS right lots, shoot standing guy. SS slightly left of
centre, shoot 2 guys in building, shoot guy outside of
building, shoot moving guy.
7. 2 enemies: Boss! Shoot two enemies, or maybe shoot boss as she's
coming out from behind the crates. (end location)
8. 2 enemies: Shoot boss as she's moving between boxes. Or kill enemies
(1st one's easy, kill the 2nd one with a headshot).
Shoot boss when she's on the very left hand side (SS right)
End Location
Tokyo, Shinjuku:
----------------
1. 4 enemies: SS left a bit, shoot the first two, kill the next two.
2. 3 enemies: Shoot first two, then last on on right
3a. 4 enemies: SS right, shoot 3, then last one as he appears on right
4a. 3 enemies: Shoot first two, then last one appearing on right
5a. 5 enemies: Shoot first 2 (SS right to avoid hostage), then kill next
approaching 3.
6a. 5 enemies: Shoot all visible, leave the one just on the side of the
van to last - to be sure, if you're going for single shot
kills.
7a. 4 enemies: Kill two above, SS right, kill next one, then last one
that appears.
8a. 5 enemies: kill bottom two, then two three
9a. 5 enemies: SS right, kill all =)
10. 4 enemies: Kill one in far central as you SS right, then one that appears
then kill remaining two that stop in front of the bonnet.
End Stage
Lorry bit:
----------
1. 3 enemies: Ignore the enemies, shoot the lorry and SS left to avoid
bullets.
2. Boss : Kill boss in lorry cab.
End Location
Busy (populated) area:
----------------------
I can't remember progression in this stage. Just kill sidestepping and watch
out for bystanders that seem to appear from everywhere! Get the guys with
machine guns first.
To kill the boss across the street here, ignore the enemies, and just go
for the boss. If you kill the enemies first, you won't be able to get a
shot at the boss.
End Location
Metro Station:
--------------
1. 4 enemies: Shoot the feet of the first one as he runs down the stairs on
the left, then the feet of the one on the right as he runs
down. Then the one that appears middle centre, then one on
the left.
2a. 6 enemies: SS right, kill from left to right (3 of them). Then as the
next wave appears, kill right, left, centre.
3a. 4 enemies: As soon as your head pops up, shoot the farthest one away,
then one appearing on the left, then one on the right, then
wait for the last one.
4a. 3 enemies: Easy first two, the last one pops his head out from the corridor
so you can kill him then.
5. 7?enemies: Sidestep lots!! If you stand still in the entrance to this
carriage, you'll get shot. Take them out ...
6. 3 enemies: Shoot the windows out if you haven't done so already first.
7. 4 enemies: Kill the central one with the machine gun. Then the right,
then left, then right again.
8. 2 enemies: Easy enemies, boss: shoot out the windows, kill him when he's
running down the corridor. If he hides, he pops up about
30 degrees up and along from where he was before.
9. 2 enemies: Shoot the one with the machine gun first (right), to kill the
boss - same as before.
Game complete...
