~*~ Introduction ~*~
Here it is. The even better sequel to Data East's Magical Drop. The graphics
and sound have been upgraded this time around and are much better. The version
I am covering is for the SNES console. To the best of my knowledge there have
been 3 Magical Drop games released to date on various platforms including a
Game Boy Color and NeoGeo Pocket version. I believe the GB and NGP versions
are as of yet the only domesticated copies. If I'm wrong about this, feel free
to let me know. It is a puzzle game similar to Bubble Bobble 2. You pick
characters who are based on Tarot cards and have to match up colored balloons.
Please note that my translations of this game are my interpritations of the
language. I'm sure there are other possible substitutes for the words that I
made. If you can think of something better feel free to let me know, but I did
try to keep the translation as close to the original Japanese version as
possible.
~*~ The Story ~*~
Not much has changed story wise in this game. The cute little characters of
this story book world are still looking for the Magical Drop.
The Magical Drop is a precious and mystical item hidden somewhere in the world
these Tarot card people live in. The drop has the power to grant wishes. It
will either let someone live happily ever after, or help them get revenge on
their enimy. The characters in the game are competing against eachother in a
mad race to find the magical drop.
~*~ How To Play ~*~
Game play has not changed in this sequal. The object of the game is simple.
Match 3 or more of the same colored balloons to make them dissapear.
Use the directional pad to move your character left and right. The 'B' button
will pick up a balloon. 'A' will throw it back into play. You can carry as
many balloons of the same color as you wish and move them around the board.
You play a character based on a Tarot card. This time around there are 10 to
choose from: The Fool, The Star, The Chariot, The Devil, The Magician, and The
High-Priestess, The Justice, The World, The Strength, and The Empress. Each
character has a special balloon that will cause various effects when used (some
do have more then 1 special). Special balloons come in various colors and when
matched with a group of 3 or more of its color, it causes all balloons of that
color to dissapear. There is one special that is rainbow colored. This works
the same as a normal special but it can work on any color group. The gameplay
is pretty easy to get a hang of and in my opinion doesn't really require much
more explaining then that. With that said, on to the translation.
~*~ Opening Menu ~*~
After hitting the Start button a menu with 2 options will come up. It reads:
Start
Options
Selecting Start will bring you to play menu.
Options will allow you to customize your game settings.
~*~ Options Menu ~*~
When you select Options a new screen will appear. You can customize your game
here by using the up and down keys along with the 'A' button. The text here
reads as:
Story
War
Number of Matches
Sound Sterio Mono
Music Test
Sound Test
Button Configuration
Exit
Most of this should be easy to figure out even without knowing what it says.
Story and War allow you to select
~*~ Play Menu ~*~
The play menu reads as follows:
Single Mode Versus Mode
Story Mode Puzzle Mode
~*~ Puzzle Mode ~*~
Selecting Puzzle mode will lead you to yet another screen with 5 options.
These are difficulty level settings. The level you set choose will decide what
character you play.
Easy (The Fool)
Simple (The Devil)
Normal (The High Priestess)
Hard (The Star)
Hardest (The World)
After selecting the level you will be brought to the play board. The object
here is to clear the board as quickly as possible. Unlike MD1 you are not
limited to a number of moves but instead earn more points and bonuses by
working fast.
~*~ Story Mode ~*~
Like puzzle mode, you will be brought to the difficulty select screen.
Easy
Simple
Normal
Hard
Hardest
After choosing your level you will then be taken to character select followed
by the game. Between each match you will get a small cut scene where your
character and opponent talk to eachother. They usually say cute little things
and at some point I will try to translate them all.
~*~ Single Mode ~*~
The selection screens work exactly the same as puzzle mode. The difficulty
level you select will determine the character you play with.
In single mode your only opponent is time. The longer you play the harder it
gets. How long you play determines how many levels you rise thus causing the
lines to fall faster.
~*~ Versus Mode ~*~
This is by far the most complicated mode there is. Versus must have went over
very well for Data East to create such a huge number of options here.
The main Versus menu reads as follows:
Time Battle
Normal Battle
Attack Battle
Character Strength
Options
The options screen is the same as on the main start menu.
*Character Strength*
In this screen you can alter the strength a character has. If you look at the
card display of your character you will see two things below their picture,
strength (measured by stars) and special balloons.
By using the down arrow you can choose between either strength or special.
After select the stat you wish to change by using the 'A' button, move the left
or right arrow keys to select stats from other characters. Hitting 'A' again
will then allow you to take on that character's stat.
*Attack Battle*
In this mode your win is not nessisarily determined by how many lines you give
your opponent. The main objective here is to clear as many lines you can as
fast as you can to "attack" the opponent.
After selecting this mode you will be brought to a difficulty level screen wich
reads:
None
Easy
Moderate
Hard
following your selection here will be character select then play.
*Normal Battle*
This is a regular versus mode without any extra fluff. Pick your character and
jump into play.
*Time Battle*
Here you can set a time limit on the game. Whoever is doing better at the end
of time wins the match. You can set how long you want the match to last in the
next screen:
1 Min.
3 Min.
5 Min.
10 Min.
Infinate
~*~ Misc. ~*~
In almost every mode you will get a screen if you loose. It reads:
Continue
Change Character
End
If there are only two options it will be continue (always on top) or end
(always on bottom).
